MacBook Pro won't turn on without pressing 'ctrl' & 'cmd' with power button

As title says. I have no idea why. When I press the power button nothing happens at all - no lights, no fans no video. Pressing the ctrl & cmd buttons at start-up is the only way it will turn on. It's a 2008 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.6.8.
If it's useful at all, after much to-ing and fro-ing I managed to get Apple to replace the logic board in Oct 2012 (free) under the Nvidia programme. So I'm hoping that it's not the logic board again as there's no way I could afford (nor would it be econmical) to have it replaced.
Anybody have any ideas on what the problem could be and how I might be able to rectify it?

You need to hit the "reply" button on post to whom your responding too, it's hard to tell if your responding to me or someone else.

Usually if your battery is dead because it wasn't charged you can do the SMC Reset and then check the Magsafe if it's connected and showing the orange light, then let the battery charge up.
Once the battery charges up, the computer will boot normally and then you have to reset the PRAM, time, date etc.

MacBook Pro (December 2008 purchase) has had a dead battery. It is being shipped to me here in Cambodia and I am trying to run sans battery. This has been working ok, though it will only start if I press the option and commnd keys with the power button. Tonight, the power went out in out house (I have a protective adapter, so that's not the problem) and the laptop would not come back on. When I try to start while holding the option command keys down, the green indicator lights on the side of the laptop flicker then go off..these indicate no battery found (no kidding) but aren't doing me any good. I've tried resetting SMU, zapping PRAM, nothing has worked. Only response I see is little green lights. I am
a professional writer and having no working machine is a HUGE problem.
Also: when I took my computer to the apple repair shop here in Cambodia, i was told my AppleCare was invalidated due to a small and year old dent on my case. This didn't cause concern for other repair technicians in the US. The shop is very nice and there are certified apple technican certificates on the wall. Should I try and get Applecare on the phone and demand the truth? I want the Applecare I PAID for, please. Phnom Penh,

Macbook pro won't turn on without battery?

I've done this many times, so I know it's possible. Once my laptop reaches full charge, I usually flip it over and unsnap the battery if I still need to use the laptop for an extended period of time.
I do this because I had a faulty battery, and I'm doing everything just to make sure I extend the life of this battery as long as possible.
However, when I went to remove the battery today, the laptop just shut down, even though the power cord was in. I clicked the power button, and it does nothing, then as soon as I insert the battery again, it immediately starts up, as soon as the battery is inserted.
I went and checked with coconut battery, and it tells me that the charger is indeed connected to the laptop. Has anyone else had this problem or knows of a way to solve it?

Incidentally, I think you're being a bit paranoid with your battery. One faulty battery is most likely a chance event, and you can't overcharge a normally functioning lithium ion battery. Also, you're crippling the performance of your computer by running it without the battery installed, and placing yourself at risk for data loss should there be a power failure.

Lithium batteries gradually lose their ability to hold a charge, regardless of whether you use them or not, so you're not extending the life of yours by removing it from the computer when it's plugged in.

Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Reinstalling Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. 2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. When completed quit DU and complete the Snow Leopard installation.

Depends upon what you mean by it not turning on, there are various causes.
Is the power button pressed and nothing happens? Disconnect all other devices, then a SMC and NVRAM reset.
Is there a white screen and nearly nothing? A hosed EFI firmware.
Is there a grey screen and a loading bar that gets stuck? Either a failed firmware update or corrupted drive/OS X.
Is there a grey screen with a spinning wheel? Bad third party or Apple at boot kext file.
Are you loading but not able to log in? Possible corrupt third party software designed to startup upon login.

Note, the PRAM battery is not the normal replaceable battery for power. It is the equivalent of the PC CMOS battery.

Macbook Pro won't turn on more than a few seconds.

Hi everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro 13" that I bought in November 2011. Last night it began having issues and won't turn on. I can hit the power button and the light in the front will turn on, the hard drive and fan turn on, but then after maybe 5 or 10 seconds it shuts off and then starts trying to reboot again. It does this over and over. First the light, then the hard drive and fan turn on, then it turns off and starts to try to turn on again. I can leave it on the table and it will just keep doing this. Every once in a while it sounds like it is completely booted but the screen stays black. I know it isn't the hard drive because I tested a brand new one in it last night and it did the same thing. I recently had to replace the dc in-board part because it wasn't connecting to the charger. I didn't have any problems until I did this. Could anyone tell me if they've had the same problem and what you did? I've tried holding down different keys (option, control, etc.) when it starts like other boards have suggested but so far nothing has worked.
Below are the directions I used to replace the dc in-board. Maybe when I took it apart I injured another part that causes the mac to be able to start.

My 2008 MacBook Pro Won't Turn

Hi everybody,
I have a 2008 MacBook Pro, and it just won't turn on. When I hit the power button, the white LED light in the front flickers for a second, and then shuts off.
If I hold down the power button, the computer sounds like it will turn on and the disc drive starts spinning, but within 5 seconds the lights begins to flicker and the whole thing shuts off again.
I have tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm getting desperate!

You did the SMC Reset, however there are other "no start" links from Apple, including MagSafe issues
If none of those work and your machine charged overnight with still nothing, then it's a call to hardware repair.
