Macbook pro wont boot in safe mode or from CD

Hey all
Two days ago my mack book pro (2 years old) fooze giving me a blue screen (dark blue with lines, not the ligthbue, which you se at start-up). I tried change the harddisk and rebooted using the command-r option. I succesfully re-installed mac os using the internet option. Next the macbook work for 1.5 day without any problems. However this evning the computer  brook down again. I recieved the dark blue screen again. I then tried to boot from both a CD and from the internet. However the reboot-keys are not working any more, and I cant get pass the inital start up screen. When tried booting from the CD it recieved the message from the attached image. Can anybody tell, how I will be able to boot the machine ?
Thanks Dennis

Dennis,
if your MacBook Pro is two years old, then it didn’t come with OS X on DVDs — it came with OS X on a recovery partition on the internal hard disk. Your picture shows a version of OS X from 2008, which your two year old MacBook Pro would be unable to run — which is why you’re getting the results that that picture shows.
You’ll need to repeat the OS X Internet Recovery that you did the previous time; erase your internal disk, and redownload your computer’s original version of OS X from Apple’s servers through the Command-R boot. Once you’ve reïnstalled its original version of OS X and have run Software Update, try running the Apple Hardware Test by holding down the D key as you restart, and then run its extended test, to see if it can detect a hardware problem.

  • Macbook Pro only boots in Safe Mode

    Hello,
I've read a few discussions about MacBooks only booting in Safe Mode, but my circumstances are a bit different.
Yesterday I installed a new piece of RAM. The installation was careful and went well. When I went to restart the computer, however, it would not load after the gray screen with the apple appeared. So I restarted it in Safe Mode and it worked fine (abeit there is no sound, can't use the disc drive, etc.)
The interesting part is that while in safe mode I clicked on the apple in the top left corner, clicked "About This Mac," and it appears that the computer accepted the new ram (I originally had two 2-gig sticks [4 gigs total], and I swapped out one of the sticks for the new 4-gig stick [therefore I have 6 gigs total]). So the computer recognizes the new RAM, which is good news, but I've still got a problem.
I've tried rebooting several times, and have even tried the Apple Hardware Test, but it froze shortly after I started the test (the same thing happened about 4 times).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Here's the specs of my Macbook:
    MacBook Pro, mid-2010 edition
    Mac OS X, version 10.6.8
2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 Processor
    6 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory

The RAM you received was bad, return it. That brand of RAM seems to pop up a lot here as a problem for Mac's.
According to MacTracker the Mid 2010 models with i5 processors can accept 8GB of RAM.
    Maximum Memory
    8.0 GB
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Amazon and eBay are not good sources of top tier reliable and tested RAM, your just going to be spending more money returning it.
Crucial.com or OtherWorld Computing will make sure the RAM they sell you works correctly in your model/year of machine.

  • MacBook Pro only boots in safe mode with pink vertical stripes across screen.

So on Friday night I was using Chrome on my MacBook Pro, when all of a sudden little squares of light flashed randomly across the whole screen and everything but the mouse froze. I thought that was weird, so after a few minutes I forced my computer to shutdown. I waited a little and then turned it back on, and opened Chrome again. The same thing happened again, so I forced shut down, backed up Time Machine and ran a virus scan. Nothing came up, so I put it to sleep and and went to bed.  Then Saturday morning I went to open my laptop and it was off, which was weird, so I went to turn it on. After the apple logo and spinning gear went away, it booted to a light blue screen and stayed there. Again I waited and nothing happened, so I held the power button down until it turned off. I tried again but the same thing happened, so I booted in Safe Mode.
This time there were inch long vertical bars of horizontal lines, kind of confusing but here are two pictures I took of the screen that hopefully help. http://imgur.com/oj2WbZL and http://imgur.com/O1hwJ1B . When it finally loaded I had another issue, I had 6 pink vertical bars across the screen and a box of pink horizontal stripes around my pointer, http://imgur.com/BJBzu74 . I performed an extended Apple Hardware Test and after 17 minutes it found no issues, and as it performed the test the lines got whiter and made the screen harder to see http://imgur.com/XahBD3s .
I got my laptop June 2011, so it's not that old. I just want to know what this problem could be. I don't know if it's the connection from the screen to the computer, the hard drive, the logic board or something else. I'm really worried that it's something major, so any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

This is a GPU problem. It's normal that you see that the problem is random, but the fact that your Mac is only starting up in safe mode indicates that your Mac can only start up if the VGA driver is used. Moreover, if you open Console, you should start seeing "GPU Debug Info Start", which indicates a GPU failure.
As you have a backup, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. In the case of the MacBook Pro, the GPU is soldered onto the logic board, so the whole logic board has to be replaced, being a very expensive repair.

  • Help! MacBook Pro only boots in Safe Mode and runs extremely slow (bonus: happened in Brazil and there are no Apple stores here - I need you guys!)

It's a MBP mid 2010. Last year it had some problems and an Apple authorised shop changed the HD and upgraded the OS from Snow Leopard to Lion. After that it seemed fine. Recently it started getting very slow and apps (e.g. Chrome, Flash) would crash. At some point it seemed stuck so I gave it a hard shutdown - bad idea. After that it would only boot in Safe Mode. I ran repar disk and repair permissions from the Disk Utility and it booted normally again but extremely slow. I upgraded to OS X 10.8.2, but didn't solve it. I tried booting with Command D to have a hardware diagnostic - it wouldn't boot and now it only boots in Safe Mode.
All data is backed and I have an external HD (but not an OS X Disc). Ready to anything. Help please!

Also you can perform #1 and #2 as these occur before Safe Mode, so you just reboot again with Shift key if you need to enter Safe Mode again.
At this point it sounds like your hard drive is dying or some sort of other hardware issue which I can only advise this.
Try to install OS X on a external drive and boot from it, if it's fine then you know your internal boot drive is dying.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
You can replace your internal drive yourself.
OtherWorld Computing is pretty good about providing drives and tool kits to perform that function yourself.

  • HT1199 applemac pro wont boot in safe mode, verbose mode, install DVD, NOTHING

My MacBook Pro 17" starts up in verbose mode, goes to the blue screen but then immediately goes back to verbose mode. It then immediately flashes up an error
which is that quick it's impossible to read but ends: "login window application started threaded auth" and  "already had outstanding read pending - just ignored" that's all I can read. This is then repeated constantly. Will not accept any start up key combinations (never has) will not boot from DVD, will not boot from Target Disk Mode (can access this but it won't accept the password). Tried everything I know except booting from another mac and my daughter now won't let me near it. Please can anyone help. The machine runs OSX 10.5.8 after updates

Please help me make my macbook to boot in SafeMode.
    my configuration is the following:
    MacBookPro8,1
    OSX 10.8.2

There is a bug in fsck_hfs that is affecting a bunch of people.  Basically as your comptuer starts in safe mode, it runs a file system check (fsck) against your hard drive, it gets to a certain point and... just sits there.  No one knows why outside of apple.
Lots of info here, including a way to get around it by tricking the system to think fsck had been run, though the fsck will not be complete so it is not a good solution.

  • Macbook Pro wont boot (Grey apple screen + thinking wheel)

    Hello.
When i turn on my mac, the apple logo comes, and the thinking-wheel comes - i've left it on for about 2 hours, and it just keeps going.. I've tried for 6 hours now, to reboot, googling and browsing forums.
I dont have the installation CDs, they are somewhere down in the basement collecting dust (already looked, i gave up)
I can get into terminal - i can also click "Option" and the harddrive comes up.
I dont care if i loose everything, i dont have anything important on it.
How do i get this stupid wheel away? It wont boot in safe mode neither, when i click left shift the apple shows up, but the thinking-wheel never comes (which makes me think its stuck) I've only let it wait for 3-4 minutes after clicking the left shift key, but nothing happens.

I dont have the installation CDs
What about your system dvds? The ones that originally came with your computer? If they are also gathering dust bunnies you can get replacement System DVDs from Apple's Customer Support for a nominal S&H fee. *You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.*

  • Can not boot in safe mode or from install disk

Having major issues. MBP getting stuck at a blue screen after the gray apple screen. Tried pressing and holding shift key while starting for safe mode and still goes to blue screen. Tried holding c key and starting with sl install disk in drive and still goes to blue screen. Issue started with continous cycle back to login screen from my main user account and due to my stupidity of turning on automatic login from a admin test account (thinking I could trick it), I am now in this vicious cycle.
And no I don't have a bootable clone. I just updated to SL and like an lazy idiot didn't go ahead and make my bootable clone.
FYI I do have a timecapsule with a week old or so backup.
    Any suggestions?

having a time capsule with TM backups is certainly good. you can always restore your system from it in a pinch.
do you have a firmware password set perhaps? it would preclude booting in safe mode or from the dvd using "c". reboot and hold option at the chime. this should boot you into startup disk manager where you can choose to boot from the DVD.
if you do have a firmware password set it will ask you to enter the firmware password before letting you use the startup disk manager.

My macbook pro won't "stay" in sleep mode for more than 2 seconds and wakes up. It also will restart automatically every time i shut it down.
I tried resetting PRAM. SMC. No good.

    Hello Kavans,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your MacBook Pro.  I recommend reviewing the following article for this issue:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • Satellite Pro A200 boots in Safe mode only

Sat A200 pro will only boot in safe mode.
When trying any other it gets to the windows XP sceen with the rolling bar then after a few seconds the HDD light goes out and the screen goes black.
Only way out is to turn off.
Have tried system point restore. Before I do a full restore from backups is there any thing I've missed or can do to save my self several hours of restoring and updating.
    Thank
    dave
    AKA Veg-man

Hmm dont think that you missed something
You said that the internal screen goes black after Win OS has booted up maybe the display output has been set to external monitor?
In such case the Fn + F5 should help you to switch back to the internal screen.
Did you check this? If not, do that!

  • MacBook Pro Wont Boot / Kernel Panic

Running Mountain Lion, not sure what rev.
It was sleeping, woke it up, fired up chrome, started to type and bam started to beep three times consecutively and the screen locked..
After powering down it will not boot up past the grey screen with the apple. 1/2 the time I get an error that loads over the grey that reads something to the effect of (I am paraphrasing below if I could copy it i would!):
panic (cpu 4 caller 0xfffffff80001:) and so on....
    debugger called panic
    backtrace (cpu 4)
    mac os version:
    not yet set
    system uptime in nanosec: 1762365878
Nothing else after uptime, and then itll reboot shortly after that..
    What I have tried:
    -reseating the ram
-pulling out one 4 gig stick leaving in another (and vice versa) also leaving one stick in only one ram slot
-booting into safe mode - wont get past grey apple
-clearing PRAM - appears to clear but does nothing to fix the roor cause
-booting into mac osx utilities - never comes up
-booting into startup manager - Actually comes up, when I select the recovery partition itll either not work or panic crash... Also if I leave it in startup manager as it comes up it will eventually crash without me doing anything...
    thoughts?

update, now I cant even get to the grey boot-up screen. Only black screen, power light and fans spinning...

  • Have a HUGE problem, MacBook Pro wont boot.

Hey there so my friend just bought a used macbook pro, and is having a massive problem. The computer originally came with Tiger so we went and got Leopard installed onto it. For the first couple of weeks she had no problem until last night. She went to boot and it got stuck on the blue screen. So we tried everything, we tried starting in safe mode, tried resetting the PRAM. Then we inserted the Leopard install disk and tried to run disk utility, it wouldn't verify or repair the disk permissions, we also tried to just repair the disk which looked like it worked, then rebooted, nothing happened, still got stuck. So we went to our last resort and tried to archive and install Leopard again, it wouldn't... it said that the install failed and that we should contact support. We did that and all they told us to do was archive and install and if that failed then to bring it to the apple store. Does anyone have any other suggestions before we bring it down there?
Thanks ahead of time for your help.

    Sounds like the hard drive has become seriously corrupted or is failing. Start with;
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Assuming this doesn't work and Archive and Install doesn't work, then you need to erase the drive and install Leopard from scratch. Start with:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.
If this does not work then the drive may be bad and should be replaced. This can be done at an Apple service center. If the drive is out of warranty then they will charge for the service and the replacement drive.

  • Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro wont boot up.

The apple store replaced the cable that went to my hard drive on my mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro.  The hard drive still will not boot so they told me to remove it put it in a box and connect it to another computer and save the files.  I have done that and connected it to my father's MacBook Pro.  I can find the external drive but I don't know what to do next.
My goal is to save the files on his computer then reinstall the hard drive in my computer and start up in restore mode.  Next I will reformat the drive and move the files I placed on my fathers Mac back to mine.
Can anyone help me with where I can get step by step instructions to do this?
    Thanks

I think you mean Office for Mac. In any event, the standard applications will come with the reinstall, like Mail, iTunes, etc. Anything else won't. If you have the original disks the machine came with, the iLife apps should be on there.
I have to say this... I know you probably don't want to spend money on this, but if the data is important, the better way to handle this is to buy another hard drive. They're cheap. I can tell you how to prep the new drive if you don't know how. Then run Migration Assistant when you're done and let it try to pull over all your stuff from the old drive. Once all that is done, you can reformat your old drive and you'll have something to use for backup. You don't say how big your current drive is, but even a 1TB is well under $100 now. The reason I suggest this is because if you miss anything important on your old drive, once you format it it's gone. The way I'm suggesting, you'd be able to make sure you have all you need first.

  • Macbook will not boot in safe mode

I tried to install the new Maverick OS X software but it is telling me that the install failed because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired. I tried to restart my mac in safe mood so I can back up my important documents but the gear just keeps spinning. Can someone please help me!!!

Which model MacBook Pro do you have? Have you tried booting into your Recovery partition (holding down the command and R keys whilst booting)? If your MBP supporst it, have you tried Internet recovery (holding down the command, option and R keys whilst booting)?
    Call back,
