MacBook Pro Wont Boot / Kernel Panic
Running Mountain Lion, not sure what rev.
It was sleeping, woke it up, fired up chrome, started to type and bam started to beep three times consecutively and the screen locked..
After powering down it will not boot up past the grey screen with the apple. 1/2 the time I get an error that loads over the grey that reads something to the effect of (I am paraphrasing below if I could copy it i would!):
panic (cpu 4 caller 0xfffffff80001:) and so on....
debugger called panic
backtrace (cpu 4)
mac os version:
not yet set
system uptime in nanosec: 1762365878
Nothing else after uptime, and then itll reboot shortly after that..
What I have tried:
-reseating the ram
-pulling out one 4 gig stick leaving in another (and vice versa) also leaving one stick in only one ram slot
-booting into safe mode - wont get past grey apple
-clearing PRAM - appears to clear but does nothing to fix the roor cause
-booting into mac osx utilities - never comes up
-booting into startup manager - Actually comes up, when I select the recovery partition itll either not work or panic crash... Also if I leave it in startup manager as it comes up it will eventually crash without me doing anything...
thoughts?
update, now I cant even get to the grey boot-up screen. Only black screen, power light and fans spinning...

Mid 2010 macbook pro wont boot, cant find hhd
I got a 13' Macbook pro, after a kernal panic, the computer stuck at the same page: u need to restart your computer. Later i run restore disk, but is seems cant find my hhd. Most likely i need to chaneg a new HHD?? I tried to search on apple website how much is the HHD but cant find any info. Is there one had same problem and got their HHD changed? Should I fix it thru apple or should i get the HHD myself and find someone to put it in for me? I am out of warranty. Really need help ~~ Thanks
Later i run restore disk,
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot up from the install disc #1.
Run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
If you still cannot find your hard drive, Diskwarrior has been known to do so. -

Can't install mac os x on macbook pro because of kernel panic: IO-APIC
Hello guys,
i have a macbook pro, that i formated with a windows 7 dvd, now i ONLY have a windows 7 on my macbook pro.(I wanted a clean install with os x before i puted windows 7, but i coudnt because each time i tried to boot from os x dvd i got a kernel panic, thats why i formated the entire hard driver and puted windows 7)
But now i realy want the mac os x, i really tried evrything, evry dvd, evry key combination nothing worked.the error i get is: yo need to restart your computer ....
I alo cant acces the hardware test....
nobody could help me on the forums...
Today i tried to boot from a linux bootcd, then i got the next error:
mp-bios bug:8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
kernel panic: not syncing: IO-APIC +timer doesnt work.
As you can see the problem is apic, when i press noapic the linux starts up, so i think if I could disable the apic before starting to boot from the os x dvd should help...
on windows computers yo can disable the apic in bios, does anybody have an idea how i can do it on a macbook pro?
or maybe other ideas that can repair the bug?You are working ages on a mac os and dont know how to fix a problem like this...
It's far from a common problem. I've never seen anyone post an IO-APIC issue before. Doing a search for your exact error message turns up all kinds of links for people trying to install Linux, Ubuntu, or some other non Windows OS on their PC. This thread is the only one I found related to a Mac.
Just a note on this:
i can get a mac os x snow leopard on a windows PC
You do realize that's illegal, right? The user license clearly states that the Mac OS is to be installed on Mac hardware only. Not to mention that even if you do somehow manage to get OS X installed on PC hardware, it's almost a 100% certainty it will run badly.
and tried to press option, c,d while booting(the dvd os x was in there)
Just pressing? Try again, insert the OS X install disk and restart. When you hear the startup chime, immediately press and hold the C key until it is clear you've started up to the DVD. If this doesn't work, then that kind of brings this up:
oh one more thing: i was also getting the kernel panic before formatting the previous mac os x
Kernel panics are usually hardware related. What do you have plugged into the laptop? If anything, unplug them before attempting to boot to the OS X install disk. If there's nothing plugged into any of the USB, Ethernet or FireWire ports, the it's most likely bad RAM. You'll have to bring the Mac in for service to get that checked out under warranty. -
My macbook pro was often kernel panic . Help !
My macbook often kernel panic, if i plug hardisk external . can you help me for solve this problem ?

FAQ kernelpanic
Resolving Kernel Panics
Could be the case or cable - try a different cable.
If you are trying to use it with USB, do you have a different interface to use like Firewire?
When you do have panic, you also have left your internal system with corrupt directory that now needs to be repaired. Making and adding more problems.
Try boot from OS X DVD and repair your system - go to Utilty menu => Disk Utility: Repair disk drive
Get your system working. first.
Do you have backup from before this started? when or how did it begin?
What has happened to your external? able to repair the drive?
do you have a backup for it?
How is it formatted? what is it used for? TimeMachine? PC and Windows? other?

Macbook Pro Retina 15" kernel panic
Hello everyone,
So my MBPr 15" (late 2012) decided to crash today. I don't recall exactly what I was doing but I think just the usual stuff - browsing Chrome, had firefox along with word open in the background and was printing wirelessly. I had updated to 10.9.1 about 3 days ago if that helps.
This is the report I received when it turned back on - have no idea what it means and this is the first time it has happened.
Could anyone please help me figure out what went wrong? Would really appreciate it!
Thanks

MacBook Pro Mid-2010 kernel panic at each restart
Hi,
As most of you, I succumbed to temptation to update my MacBook Pro (mid-2010) with OSX Lion. First, I've done a traditional upgrade from Snow Leopard (10.6.8) from the Mac App Store. Due to some problems (see list bellow), I've decided to make a clean install (by extracting the file InstallESD.dmg from the Lion downloaded package. I've burned the package on on 16GB USB key (8GB is sufficient). Well.. On both type of installation I've encoutered the same problems.
The 99% of the time, my MBP make a kernel panic at the start (both when I do a simple restart of the system or after restating the system after a normal shutdown.
As I use mainly my MBP for professional use, I set the system to ask for a user logon at system start. Mainly each time, it wasn't possible to logon to the system. As soon as I tried to enter my password, I only see the game wheel icon turning on the screen and no possibility to enter my password. In this state, my only solution was to restart my system by pressing the power button.
Both of these two problem was replicable in either an upgraded system or on a clean install.
Finally (because I'm a patient guy :-) ), I've do a third clean installation, restored my system from one TimeMachine backup and found a solution to avoid having the problem I explain into the point 2.
When you restore a backup from TimeMachine from within Mac OSx, you have to create a second admin account, log onto this account and run the Migration Assistant to restore your backup. Admitting that, like me, during the clean OS installation, you've used the same account name as the one you had into your backuped installation, at the time of the TimeMachine restore, Migration Assistant will propose you two things:
Create a new user and restore our TimeMachine backup on this new username
Replace the existing username on your clean installed machine my the one that was backup into timemachine
As I've previously created a new account with admin right, I've logged on this account, launch Migration Assistant, confirm that I'm okay to restore my TimeMachine backup on the already existing user.
Finally, this setup resolved my point 2 problem. The difference between my initial setup and the one I use now is that I've now two users presented on my logging screen. To log on now, I've to choose the user, enter the password and never had the problem I had before with only one user set on my system.
Now, I really hope that Apple will fix this first version of Lion asap. For the rest, I'm pretty happy with the system. I'll work this week with Lion and will see if I encounter other problems. One thing is sure, I'll keep my TimeMachine backup of my previous Snow Leopard system at a safe place until I'll be sure that Lion will be stable.
Cheers....Hi,
That's correct, I'm running with one RAM chip, after testing the bays work correctly first, I elliminated that route, so it was indeed a bad RAM chip module.
I was just about to give up, as the first swap was with the good RAM out, so same problem. I thought I had nothing to lose by swapping the RAM again, and voila, it worked. I'm opening up some seriously big photoshop files at present, just to make doubly sure it's been resolved ha ha.
I'm looking at replacing my RAM now with OWC, as apparently according to their website and with the correct EFI updates, you can max out the mid 2010 MBP with 16GB of RAM. I'll much rather treat myself to that, than forking out on a new logic board.
I think it's quite a simple, but effective fix this one.
Thanks for all the advice and help, I really did appreciate it.
Ciao,

Macbook pro late 2011 Kernel Panic: bad ram? Not really
Hi guys, I'm Experiencing random kernel panics with my MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Late 2011. The kernel panics are completely random but I found a way to reproduce it with playing 2 videos in youtube simultaneously. The longest interval between kernel panics is about 20 minutes; I got sometimes 2 hours results.
Running the mac in safe mode, I can use the mac for hours and the kernel panic will not happen.
Strange thing is that the problem arise even when I load a linux live distro (ubuntu): this makes me think it's an hardware related problem.
I think my problem is related to this thread: Processor context corrupt.
I already changed the ssd and the ram (2x4 GB new Crucial modules) but kernel panic is still happening. No results even resetting PRAM and SMC.
Here's a little extract of kernel panic: as you'll see there are no third party modules loaded and applications installed.

My main concern is: could this be overheating related?
Temperature levels are affected by several things such as the type and number of applications open, the ambient temperature, how the MBP is physically positioned and occasionally by foreign matter inside the unit. The temperatures that you describe for given circumstances are not necessarily out of line. Here is a screenshot of a temperature monitor from my MBP as I respond to you:
This is with a very light load on the MBP resources and is less than the 50°c that you report, but there could be explanations for the differences. The specific details would have to be examined but all told I do not view this as a matter for grave concern.
Temperatures in the 90°c+ range are not unusual when running applications such as Skype or rendering video. Again knowing the details would be required to make a definitive statement one way or the other.
Be aware that there are thermal shutdown provisions in the MBP that will protect it from heat damage.

MacBook Pro getting constant kernel panics right since updating to 10.8.5
Hello,
I have my personal MacBook Pro and I've noticed that since I've updated the OS to Mountain Lion, I'm getting kernel panics for the first time since I've been using Macs, and it's getting more constant, up to the poin I've just had 3 in a row.
I've been reading that MacBooks from Mid 2011 may have a problem with the graphic card, and as far as I remember, I got mine about that time, and all my .panic files seem to point into the GPU direction.
I have the panic files for the panics that happened this last month, and I'm copying the last one, that happened just 15 minutes ago.

Is this one of those Macbooks or this may be a different problem?
Thank youYou have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you'll be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a depot repair. The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
Retina Macbook Pro: Constant Crashing, Kernel Panics, Etc
I've heard a lot of talk about how certain apps are crashing these new Macbook Pros. I'm here to tell you that it's not the apps: it's the hardware.
At least, that's what casual observation has taught me.
Here's my story:
Bought a new, fully-loaded Retina Macbook Pro. Immediately, apps start crashing left and right: Evernote, Reminders, Pages, etc.
Even worse, the computer had multiple kernel panics in the first week of purchase, none of which could be attributed to Chrome, Skype, or any of that nonsense. When I ran the Apple hardware test, everything came up fine, but I wasn't so sure, so I took the computer to the Genius Bar, who recommended that I erase and reinstall. I did that, and I just experienced another crash today. I was in Pages, and the entire computer froze, although I could move my cursor.
Put simply, I dropped almost four thosuand dollars on what should be the best computer on the planet, but is actually a piece of crap.
No matter what app I'm running, whether or not I reinstall, the machine continuously crashes.
Either that means that something is fundamentally broken about the OS, which doesn't seem to be the case given that it's working fine on other machines, or there is something wrong with these new Retina Macbook Pros. Not really. If you read the terms of use for this forum it says something to the effect of Questions. No Ranting and or X Y or Z.
I feel for you and gave the only option you have, if you are within that 14 day period.
You could try calling Apple Customer Service and simply stated that you want a refund even though you are just outside that 14 day time period as you are very dissatisfied with the system. If that doesn't get you anywhere you could file a complaint with your CC company.
You are right, It Is a Piece of KWrap. These forums are littered with problem post of all kinds for the Retina MBPs.
Not only that but the Retina models are basically irreparable. They are Throw Away computers as most parts are either glued to the case parts or soldered to the main Logic/mother board
Personally I have bought my First and Last Mac and with that the last Apple product I will ever buy.
Good Luck. -
Bad NVRAM 15" Macbook Pro Retina? & Kernel PANIC
I think NVRAM is bad in my 15" MBP Retina. Eveytime I restart my laptop all my TrackPad setting are delete/reset. Also my Screen wont turn ON if I reset NVRAM by holding Comand Optoin R P.. After a nvram reset, laptop turns on with the screen OFF, I have to put the computer to sleep and then wake up the computer for the sreen to come to life.
What I've done:
- deleted all unecessary apps that could couse crashes.
- after nvram reset tried starting up in disk select mode by holding option but still screen OFF
- tride booting up in safe mode by holding shift but still sreen is OFF
- tried booting up in restor more and the screen is still OFF
Only way to get it back it to put computer to sleep and wake it up.
Also if the laptop is at SLEEP for a long time say over night, in the morning when I wake it up it has Kernel PANIC and has this crash report:

If you click on "scaled" there are 5 to chose from. I changed it from the 4th one to the 5th (more space) one and then restarted the laptop and nvram, laptop started up with screen ON yeaaaa :-). After that I changed the resolution back to the 4th one that I prefer and tried restarting laptop and nvram and now the laptop starts up with the screen ON. Oh also now my TrackPad settings stay saved, and are NOT reset after a restart. I'm guessing there was something causing a bug between my nvram and display settings that was causing my trackpad settings to reset and my laptop to start up with display OFF. I will report back if it does it again, or if I get Kernel PANIC again.
Any comments please post as I still don't know what was causing the problem in the first place. -
2010 macbook pro spontaneously has kernel panics related to GPU Panic
This is the following error message I get when I log back in after the computer gives me that grey screen with the text and requires a reboot:
I will say that I was having this error for a little bit and I reformatted my hard drive to insure that it wasn't an applicate I installed that was causing the problem (like caffeine, etc.)

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. -
MacBook Pro WONT boot when Firewire Hard Drive is attached....?
is anyone else having a problem with Booting up their MacBook Pro when they have a firewire device attached?
I use a Lacie 400Gb External drive and it just wont get past the start screen (grey screen, before the Apple even appears), unless I unplug the firewire drive first...
I know Apple will fix these bugs, so I really shouldn't moan... but I just wanna double check others are having this problem and I haven't got a dud one!! (or I'll take it back to the Apple Store ASAP!)
Thanks!!!I have this about 50% of the time! I generally have my FW400 drive hooked up, and if I forget, it may or may not boot. I have sent an email about that to apple. Oh, if I was in Windows last, it is not a problem since it remembers it...

Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro wont boot up.
The apple store replaced the cable that went to my hard drive on my mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro. The hard drive still will not boot so they told me to remove it put it in a box and connect it to another computer and save the files. I have done that and connected it to my father's MacBook Pro. I can find the external drive but I don't know what to do next.
My goal is to save the files on his computer then reinstall the hard drive in my computer and start up in restore mode. Next I will reformat the drive and move the files I placed on my fathers Mac back to mine.
Can anyone help me with where I can get step by step instructions to do this?
ThanksI think you mean Office for Mac. In any event, the standard applications will come with the reinstall, like Mail, iTunes, etc. Anything else won't. If you have the original disks the machine came with, the iLife apps should be on there.
I have to say this... I know you probably don't want to spend money on this, but if the data is important, the better way to handle this is to buy another hard drive. They're cheap. I can tell you how to prep the new drive if you don't know how. Then run Migration Assistant when you're done and let it try to pull over all your stuff from the old drive. Once all that is done, you can reformat your old drive and you'll have something to use for backup. You don't say how big your current drive is, but even a 1TB is well under $100 now. The reason I suggest this is because if you miss anything important on your old drive, once you format it it's gone. The way I'm suggesting, you'd be able to make sure you have all you need first. -
My Macbook Pro wont boot after upgrading to SSD, A ? Mark on Folder appears
Hello all,
I just put in a new SSD into my mid 2012, 13" macbook pro. This is the exact SSD http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=77394 89&tab=7&SRCCODE=WEBLET03ORDER&cm_mmc=Email-_-WebletMain-_-WEBLET03ORDER-_-Deals &utm_source=EML&utm_medium=main&utm_campaign=WEBLET03ORDER&cm_lm=noahbragg@cedar ville.edu
I swapped out my optical drive and put in the SSD using this tutorial, http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+Dual +Hard+Drive/13787 Everything seemed to go fine and i had no problems. But when I tried to start up the computer it stayed on a gray screen and a foler with a question mark on it, showed up blanking. I have looked all over for the internet for the answer, I have tried to reset the PRAM but it did nothing. I then tried to select what drive i wanted to boot from by holding the option key when i booted, but when the options came up, SSD or old harddrive did not come up as a way to boot up. There were some internet options to recover but they did not work.
The SSD has nothing on it at this point, but my plan was to boot up using the original HD and then clone it over to the SSD, but ovbiously i cant even find the HD to boot to. I have seen that people are having troubles with booting to their SSD because of the new mavericks update, but i am just trying to boot to my original HD at this point.
I also considered that maybe i possibly damaged the HD cables through static electricty, but when i searched more about it i learned that i should have heard snap or felt a jolt. None of these things happened when i installed the SSD. So i beleive that the hard drive or SSD are not broken in any way.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how i can fix this? Need my computer very badly! thanks in advance.I also forgot to mention that after the first time i tried to boot, it went to the normal screen where it wanted me to put in my apple id password. but the loading wheel was just spinning the whole time. so i turned off the computer and tried again. thats when the question mark folder came up and kept coming up everytime after that.
