Macbook pro worth it ?

Hi, I'm 14 years old and I play bass, I wont do graphic desing or something like that, do you think that i have to buy a Macbook pro or a good bass ?
Here in Argentina the Macbook pro 13" is USD $1800. Its too expensive.
Thank you.

Hi LuchoM
Like any tool it's a case of what you want to use it for. You say you play bass so are you expecting to record and compose with your laptop?
And if you haven't got a good bass yet, then can you live without the laptop? If buying anything stops or compromises you from following your primary desire (being a musician?)  then you should think why you're buying it. There are plenty of good music software packages on PCs and so having a cheaper PC laptop and a bass may be a better combination.
Good luck.

  • Is a Macbook Pro worth the money?

Hi, I am going to get a MBP by the end of this year and I want 1 TB but I see for the retina display models there is no option... I have an iMac and would be interested in a Macbook Pro

Correct, the retina display models do not have a HD they have flash storage. Read the specifications http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/
As to whether or not the Macbook pro is worth the money, I guess only you can decide. I like mine.

  • Is this MacBook Pro worth fixing?

    Hello all:
I have a MacBook Intel Pro Dual Core laptop in a bit of a sorry state. The baby barfed over the keyboard, and so I tried to remove it to clean it... and now the keys won't go back on. Also the thing has been dropped a dozen times or more and the chassis is bent (which is probably why the keys won't fit back on). Also, as the chassis is bent I can't get a CD/DVD into the drive. Also, according to a diagnostic test a volume needs rebuilding.
Is this computer worth fixing? It would need a new keyboard, some internal jiggery-pokery (to fix the volume issues) and the chassis straightening.
Does anyone know what this is likely to cost? I live some distance from the nearest Mac Store so I'm trying to find out a ballpark amount before I take the trip.
Thanks for any info or thoughts.

    Adrian:
You do not say just which MacBook Pro you have, but you can likely return it to usable condition for under $100, if the liquid did not get beyond the keyboard. I don't know about the bent chassis, but if it were not affecting the computer's functionality prior to the baby using the keyboard inappropriately, the computer should function just as well as before that accident. In terms of the optical drive it is difficult to say just what the issue might be there. It may have been damaged in one of the falls the computer sustained. You can pick up a keyboard/upper case on eBay for less than $50 and install it yourself with step by step directions from iFixit.
In the case of the volume needing rebuilding that is a directory issue which, if it can't be repaired by Disk Utility, can be repaired by a third party utility like Tech Tool Pro, DriveGenius or Disk Warrior. If you are not in a position to invest in one of those at the moment you can backup any data you wish to save and do a complete reformat, erase and reinstall. In other words, you computer can likely be functional again without major expense.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • What is this macbook pro worth?

Thinking of trading something of mine for this Macbook Pro, just wanted to see what the value of this computer is so I can figure out how much money I should ask for the item I am trading.
    2009 Macbook Pro 13.3 inch
    2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    3MB shared level 2 cache
    2GB of 1066MHz DDr3 SDRAM
    160 GB 5400-rpm hard drive

This site will give you a good idea of what the MBP's owner could fairly expect to get for it on the open market:

  • Is this Macbook Pro worth getting?

Hi sorry for my bad english
I'm currently an employee at a pawn shop and we have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro 15" i7 core running Lion for $550 + tax. My manager had lowered the price since Im an employee. The laptop have minor scuffs on the corner and it appears to have a broken headphone piece stuck inside the jack which prevents the sound to work out of the speakers, however you can still hear the chime when booting. The hard drive haven't been wiped yet. When I use the laptop it runs fine but when I open up a certain game installed the computer sometimes gives me a gray screen of death (Guess due to the system haven't been wiped yet, remember its running Lion)
To me personally I think it's a good deal to buy it since other places its way higer. What do you think?
    I

    Nightfall9,
the 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro is known to have a defect with its NVIDIA GPU. Apple had a policy of servicing this model MacBook Pro gratis, but it was limited to a term of three years from the laptop’s original date of purchase. In my view, a low price on this particular model does not necessarily mean a good deal, particularly if the broken headphone piece cannot be easily extracted, or if this laptop does not also come with its original grey installation DVDs. Its original version of Mac OS X, Snow Leopard, will need to be reïnstalled on it, since the previous owner’s Apple ID will still be associated with this laptop for as long as Lion remains installed on it; and it will need the version of Snow Leopard that came on its original grey installation DVDs, not the version of Snow Leopard on the white retail  DVD.

  • Is MacBook Pro worth the price difference vs. MacBook?

    Friends,
Is MBP a good bang for the buck, vs MacBook, for the Logic hobbiest?
I am a student, ready to buy a new computer and all new software to replace my eMac 1.25GHz (that runs Logic Pro 7 and Adobe Creative Suite 1). I plan to use Logic Pro 8 for MIDI and software instruments, with occasional recording of DJ mix sets.
After academic discount, MacBook Pro starts at $750 more than MacBook, but when upgraded to the same RAM, HDD, and processor, the MBP costs $400 more than the MB. I am aware of all technical differences between the two systems, even expecting a serious update to MBP soon.
Would you post your opinions, please?
    Thank you.

Hmm I say go for the Macbook and save yourself a bunch of cash!
Like you have found out, buying a Macbook and upgrading it yourself (HDD and RAM) is far far far cheaper than either buying it from Apple or going with the Macbook Pro.
I'd suggest literally buying the base spec in terms of RAM and HDD, and replacing these yourself with a bigger HDD and more RAM. Neither will void your warranty as they are user replaceable and Apple provide instructions on how to change them on their website.
You could drop 2GB (they might even support 3 or 4 now) of RAM into a MB for less than $40 and a fast 300GB HDD isnt gonna cost you much more than $175-200. Once those are in, the difference in spec between your upgraded MB and the MBP doesnt seem so great, whereas the price is still hugely different!
The only time I would suggest going for the MBP is for graphics. Even then I think they are a little overpriced. I have the same NVidia card that was shipping in the MBP's in my iMac and I work in 3D graphics...to be honest, the difference in graphical performance between my MB (same spec as my iMac without graphics driver) and iMac is minimal.
The only other decider would be how many FireWire/USB ports you would use as the MBP has more.
I've considered upgrading to a MBP myself, but the specs just arent attractive enough at the moment and Im waiting for an update which will hopefully come soon, but this would be purely for my graphics work. For my Logic use, the MB handles everything I want to do no problem at all.
    Hope this helps.

  • Found a small chip on the corner of my new macbook pro- worth calling?

I've had this mac since around December time so I've been very careful with my new purchase! I was just at my desk today when I realised there is small chip on the edge near the battery charger.
Is it worth calling apple about or will they not do anything?
Not sure what can be done, its just annoying considering its so new!

You are a bit over the Apple 14 day return period. There is no way to tell if it came like that and even if it did you would of needed to see it when you took it out of the box. And then taken it back for a replacement.
Sorry but as Steve says Apple will do nothing for you as this falls under accidental damage, as far as Apple is concerned.

  • Is First Generation MacBook Pro worth further investment?

Good Morning! After running disk utility (from a startup disk), I was only able to run "verify disk". The critical messages were:
-volume bit map needs minor repair
    -volume header needs minor repair
-the volume MAC HD needs to be repaired
I've tried all solutions listed in support and communities section- with no luck.
I can't even archive and install!
-Is TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior a possible solution if my files have some font issues?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Not really. If you can't get into the volume, you can't retrieve the files. What I would do is replace the drive then hook the old one up through an external enclosure and try to read the files from there.

  • Speck Case for Macbook Pro Worth It?

I just ordered the black seethru mbp case and was wondering if any of you enjoy it as much the reviews say it.  The real question i wanted to ask was since i always have it on my desk most of the time don't actually take it anywhere either, is the case still worth buying.  it was only $30 on amazon.  let me know because from what i'm reading it is.  i just thought maybe i wasted $30 since i don't actually move it too often away from the desk lol
    thanks

Yes, in my opinion you wasted $30. In the first place, the case doesn't offer any real protection against bumps and dings; all it prevents is superficial scratches. In the second place, if you don't transport your computer, it doesn't need protection against anything except spills on your desk, and the case won't help at all with those. And in the third place, the case will impair the machine's radiative cooling ability to some degree; that will be most noticeable if you use the MBP for gaming or other very demanding operations.

  • Is the higher-end 13" Macbook Pro worth the extra $300?

I know that it has a faster processor and larger hard drive, but does it justify the extra $300?

Well, if you are facile with some tools you could install a bigger drive yourself. You can install more RAM on your own without the need for tools. But you cannot replace the CPU and GPU if you need more processing power in the future. If that's a concern then it's better to get it now because you cannot add it later.
For what you describe you could easily get by with a much less powerful computer. My personal decision was the 2.4 GHz model, dual-core i5, 500 GB hard drive and 8GBs of RAM. I then got a DataDoubler and an SSD from OWC that replaced the optical drive. Total cost was under $1,600.00. I bought the computer from an authorized Apple reseller which came with the 8 GBs of RAM, 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive, MiniDisplay Port to HDMI adaptor, and MiniDisplay Port to DVI adaptor. Total was $1,352.00 including shipping (no sales tax.) DataDoubler is $75.00 and the 60 GB SSD was $150.00.
The reseller is ExperCom.com if you're interested.

  • Should I return my new MacBook Pro?  Creative Suite CS and CS2 do not work?

    I am soooooooooooooooo ******!!!!!!!!
I just purched the top of the line MacBook Pro and learned that the Adobe Creative Suite products do not work on this machine. I contacted Adobe and they said they will not have an update until they release the next version, which won't release until (at the earlies) the end of this year. While Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign are not crucial aps for me, I do use them for business regularly.
With this being the case, I ask the mac community using these machines, should I return the computer, buy a g4pb (my TI just literally fell apart) ? Reading the board hear and various news articles, there seems to be a few issues (whine - apps - etc).
I guess I should have looked into this more before purchasing, but I trusted Apple to release products that are ready for users.
This is the most expensive computer I have ever puchased and I need it to do everything my TI PB did.
Is the MacBook Pro worth the early adopter hastle?
(thank god I haven't opened the box yet!)
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    According to Adobe:
Creative Suite 2 will work on Rosetta with the exception of one componet. Version Cue Workspace (Server) does not work under Rosetta. As of Jan 31 2006 this was the only known issue with using the suite on Intel Mac's.
    Adobe Systems
Creative Suite: Yes (with performance losses)
    Photoshop Elements: Yes
(Adobe has posted "FAQ: Adobe Support for Intel-based Mac Computers" [intelmacsupport.pdf]
http://www.adobe.com/products/pdfs/intelmacsupport.pdf , which discusses Intel support, development, Rosetta compatibility, rough schedules, and more for Mac applications from Adobe and Macromedia.)
I would recommend that if you are going to use this program that you have 2 GB's of RAM seeing as I hear that Rosetta can be a RAM hog. Hope this helps you out.

  • When would it be wise to buy a macbook pro retina

i would like to know when would be a good time to buy a macbook pro
I have one already and was wondering when the newer models will be in stores and perhaps some idea of what chip set along w/ other specs they might be using.
I like the all flash mem concept and other aspects yet would also like to see the hardware tested by users. if some owns a retina perhaps you could share with me yr. thoughts of it along w/ any rumors and flaws. Are these new macbook pros worth the price and when will newer models be avaliable??

IMHO Never. To limited even if they fix the current problems with the current units or in a newer version.
    It is a glorified iPad.

  • Macbook Pro or Macbook Pro with Retina?

I have been looking into buying my first Mac computer and definitely want one of the Macbook Pro lineups. I am looking for a 15 inch prefferably but is spending the 300-400 extra dollars to get the 15" Retina Macbook Pro worth it? I'm certainly no professional photographer or anything however i do like to do digital drawing as a hobby. I use my computer for more than 8 hours a day doing school, playing games and also watching various video such as Youtube and Netflix. Does the Retina model make that much of a difference? I would appreciate some pros and cons for the models and your opinion on which one you think i should get! Thanks!

It is really simple.  Go to an Apple store where they have both systems and you can see them side by side to compare.  You are the only one who can tell if the Retina display is important enough to you to pay the extra money.
Do keep in mind that when you buy a MBP with Retina, that the RAM and storage are "fixed" in that you can not upgrade tehm later, you would need to sell your current system and purchase a new one to get more capacity.  Also, the Retina model does not have an optical disc, and since you will be at school, it does not have a lock port, so most of your computer lock cables will not work with it.  The non-retina system does have the optical drive, the RAM and HDD/SSD are considered user upgradable, and it does come with the lock port.  For most people, if you don't need the Retina display, the upgradability options are a better choice.

  • Trade in 2011 macbook pro

should i trade-in my 2011 MacBook Pro and get a new 21" iMac? how much does the 2011 MacBook Pro worth?
    Thanks

Check on eBay and Amazon for current prices in your area.

  • Should I buy a Macbook Pro?

I'm in the market for a new computer, and I kind of want to get a laptop. See, I'm an engineering student, and my four year old HP desktop is driving me nuts.
So, I was researching PCs when I got the idea that maybe I should consider a Mac. I used a Mac in a graphic arts class a couple of years ago and I liked it.
However, people seem to have a LOT of complaints about the MBP in this forum. I'm going to need to hear some "success" stories before I go out and buy an MBP.
So, please: Why should I make the switch? And is a Macbook Pro worth the extra cash?

The good thing is that you will be an informed buyer.
You pose the biggest question of new converts, the reliability of the machine, and unfortunately you came to the wrong place to find it out.
You will see 95% complaints of the machine and barely 5% praise here. Everyone comes here for support, that's what it's designed for... Getting your stupid little questions answered so you don't wait 10 hours on the phone for tech support from a foreigner that can't communicate well with you...
So you have noticed some of the hardware problems that people encounter... I will list for you what I have seen people complain about:
    Battery Life
    Battery Heat
    Computer Heat
    Processor Heat
    Improper Thermal Paste
    Angled Keys on the Keyboard
    Wireless signal Dropping
The whine part 1 - processor
The whine part 2 - the screen inverter
The whine part 3 - the Hard Drive
The whine part 4 - the general public!
The whine part 5 - the fans
CDs getting stuck in the drive
    Can't burn CDs
    Can't burn DVDs
Left side inputs don't work (USB, etc)
Mag safe burned down my house
    Dead Pixels
    iSight Camera not working
    iSight camera mal-aligned
    Casing is Warped
    Casing doesn't close
    Keys on keyboard Stick
    Keys on keyboard don't work
    Kernel Panics
    Won't Turn on
    Won't Shut off
    Won't sleep
    Won't wake from sleep
    Hard Drive corrupt
    Hard Drive crashes
Apple is repairing my computer x45 days
    Apple returned my computer damaged
Apple has replaced my computer 5 times with the same problems
So that's all I can remember off the fly...
So now that we have all the problems on the table... This is the best laptop I have ever owned. Of those problems, I have had only 1 of them, and another which was abnormal wear and tear on my "open button", which were both repaired immediately during the week I was away on vacation (they were non urgent issues).
It's fast, it's reliable, it's dependable, and it has so many great features that I can't shut up to my friends about it.
The fact is that anything that you buy can come with problems, some more then others. Here you see many people talk about them and what they have done to get them solved. What you will see are the big huge posts of major problems that people don't get solved... because those are major topics. What you won't see are the many people that have a problem, is fixed immediately and then the post disappears due to the high volume here.
Apple has been rated #1 by Consumer Reports for service and repair and I agree with that. The fact that there are people that are receiving brand new computers as replacements for some (even silly) problems are tribute to Apple's dedication to customers.
So if you have a problem (which you may not considering there were hundreds of thousands shipped, and only a hand full come here to complain) you will be able to have it fixed quickly and reliably, and if not replaced.
We cannot forget the horror stories that people have, but they are far fewer and between all of the good machines that are out there.
YOu should make the switch, it will be worth every penny. Sorry for all the shocking complaints... just wanted to get them all on the board for you.
