MacBook Pro15 Retina - Bootup resolution problem?!

Hi all,
I am actually confused and would be grateful for any assistance.
My new MacBook Pro15 retina (fully spec model) is set at screen resolution 1920x1200. However everytime I switch on the MacBook Pro is default the bootup at default resolution until you log into the account the screen jump back into 1920x1200.
I have a MacPro and that no such problems with screen resolution at all.
So please can you help. Just to let you know I have alrady deleted the particular plist files that are location HD and also done several VRAM and reset to re-installing the OS.
I am completely lost...
Help!
Thanks

Why can you not just use :
System preferences > Displays ...
... to set the resolution back to your favorite resolution?

Well there are two or three causes of eyestrain with displays different people seem to have.
    1: Small type/UI elements
    2: Glossy screens
    3: Flicker rate
    1:
The higher pixel rate combined with the display set at the higher resolution is going to cause UI and type to be smaller and harder to see. In fact it's advised to set OS X to a lower resolouton so it upscales better to match the pixel of the higher display.
Reports coming in say watching HD 1920 x 1080 trailers on the anti-glare 17" is best as the pixel content matches the display almost fullscreen, where on the MBP-R it's upscaled and thus looks blurry.
HD content makers are NOT going to change all their video cameras to support 2880 x 1800 full screen, so in order to get a clearer image playing HD 1080 content, one will have to do so in a smaller window.
    2:
The new MBP-R dispalys are 75% less glossy, but not 100% less glossy like the anti-glare models so this can still cause some people problems. This can be lowered to under 1%, however I'm suspecting to do so would be considered giving up a military advantage to China where Apple gets it products made.
    3:
I don't know about the flicker rate if it's better or not on the MBP-R's than the previous screens.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 2014 HDMI problems

    Hi,
I'm new to the Mac world, so please forgive me if I'm overlooking the obvious.  I'm trying to connect my new 2014 Macbook Pro Retina to my VGA monitor via a HDMI adaptor.  I've used this adaptor without problems on my Lenovo laptop running Ubuntu.  However, when I connect it to the Mac, the Macbook display flashes, sometimes I see the display preferences and it correctly identifies the monitor, an old Acer wide-screen, flash up and it flicks between various resolutions and preference options; other times it just flashes and then goes blank (the only way I know to get back from the blank screen is to turn it off and on again).  Other times it just flashes and then does nothing, certainly in display preferences I don't see the other monitor and the other monitor is blank.
I know the cable and monitor work, I can understand their being a resolution problem, the monitor is way less capable than the retina screen.  So, is there any way to tell the Mac to use extended mode instead of mirror mode from the start?
Can I basically set-up the monitor and then plug it in, so it doesn't have to try and auto detect everything and have a heart attack?
Also, it seems like all the failed attempts have stopped the Mac even trying to figure out what to do.  I have deleted the plist files, which I assume are the configuration files so it will try and figure out what to do again, but it just seems to have now succumbed to the fact it doesn't want to work with it.
    Any suggestions, very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately the monitor is not available to be selected under Display > Colour.  When I have the display properties open, it does flash up a new window with the correct monitor and various resolution settings, but it is not possible to select one or do anything as the display keeps flashing and the cursor keeps jumping to the top left of the screen, then everything goes blank.
The HDMI to VGA adaptor that I use is a CAMAC (not the best in the world I'm sure but has worked solidly with my Lenovo laptop and Unbuntu).
The monitor I'm trying to connect to is a Acer AL1916W (again not a great monitor but has worked flawlessly with every over computer connected to it including the Lenovo with the HDMI adaptor).
The Mac is defiantly recognising the monitor, it just can't seem to decide what to do with it, flashing up display property windows and swapping between settings before giving up and everything goes blank.
Any other suggestions very much appreciated.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 13' HDMI Problem

    Hi all,
Two weeks ago I discovered a problem with the HDMI output on my external monitor (LG IPS 234) when connected to a MacBook Pro Retina 13'. The monitor wasn't able to display greyscale information. E.g. the underlying greyscales of a Google preview search suggestion when hovering a mouse over the suggestions. Also the whole monitor display looked washed out and fuzzy. I thought it would be a problem with the monitor, so I hauled it back to the store. We checked the monitor with a MBPR 15' and everything was fine (screens not in sync - important see below). I started thinking the new 13' MBPR might be the issue. But before leaving the store and blaming my MBPR 13' we checked out another 13' MBPR and (supprise!) the same effect again. To double check we tried another external monitor from Samsung (ok, I know if Samsung is not working with an Apple MBPR...). But seriously... The same effect again.
I contacted the Apple support and after discussing this with the 1st level (with little helpful tips ... SMB reset etc.) I was forwarded to the 2nd level. The guy wasn't able to help me either. He blamed my monitor and that it might need a firmware update. The problem could be linked with some incompatible HDCP. But a firmware update can only be done by the monitor vendor or a service partner and LG doesn't even indicate that this is possible at all.
Now my question is, does anybody else experience problems with external IPS displays and the MBPR 13'?
As I said, we tested it with 2 different MBPR 13' and 2 monitors from different vendors. In each combination the same problem. Always the same effect. For me this is an indication that there might be a bigger problem under the surface.
    Kird
PS: a friend with a MPBR 15' has the same effect but only when the internal and the external IPS monitor is in sync
PS: the Apple 2nd level support promised me to give me a call regarding further steps to solve the problem (with a fixed date on Monday this week) ... They never called... Poor service Apple!

    Hello Daniel,
I gave Apple a call last week and asked for a feedback on my ticket. The guy I talked to at least tried to help me with the issue. In the meantime since my last attempt to receive something from Apple nothing has happened on the issue. Surprise! So we started from 0 again... Ok... Bought in customer with a decent pain level...
I received some test tools from the guy that I ran on the MPPR creating an encrypted file (...yes I can imagine what you think and I can assure you I had similar thoughts...) and mailed this stuff back to Apple. Now that they have insight of my whole digital live (ok I distend it a bit, but in reply to my question what's all included in this file the guy mentioned something like "don't worry only technical stuff..." Ah yea... That's why it is encrypted... You might find an info about a malfunction in the HDMI inside... very confident... Ok... What you all do for a chance of solving an HDMI problem).
So the current status is: Apple engineers are spending nights in the office to dig into whatever this tools squeezed out of my innocent MacBook. You see I have reached a state where I am slowly drifting into sarcasm ;-)
The guy mentioned there might ! be a patch coming with the next release if Apple finds the issue important enough ! and ! enough other customers have the problem as well. And on this I am not kidding. That's what he said.
Hmm... Will 3 customers be enough? I doubt it... We'll find out with the next release. Maybe we can increase the complains from release to release and empirically estimate when Apple starts taking customers seriously.
My personal guess is that they will dismount the HDMI port and send us an aluminum plug that fits perfectly in the hole. I have a flashback... There was once an issue with an antenna and they offered a piece of plastic to...
I am getting carried away so I better stop now :-) and return to my wine
Let's stay in touch if you find out something on the GB

  • Macbook pro retina ghost image problem

I have heard about the burn-in problem on macbook pro retina display especially on LG screen. After I got my macbook retina for 3 months, the ghost image problem become really really unacceptable. After 4~5mins, the image on screen will burn in obviously for quite a long time. IT IS VERY OBVIOUS!! So I drop by apple store and find a genius, he did a persistence test on my macbook. The test is under a very low brightness, and I can not even know how he was operating. After 6 minutes, he said there is no burn-in problem. He explained that, if my macbook pass the test, it means my screen is within inspection. But I can tell if this screen is good, APPLE you should take a look at your inspection and change it RIGHT NOW. Everyone of my friend who have seen the problem on my screen says it is unacceptabe, how can it be within inspection? If anyone need a photo of that, i will provide.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Wireless Connection problem

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro Retina (late 2013) w AC wireless capability, and I have not been able to connect to my wireless network at work. Other computers, including my previous MacBook Pro (mid 2008) and my iPad 3 are able to connect to the work network without problems and I have no problems connecting my new MBP to my home or other networks. I have Windows 8 on a Boot Camp partition, and when my MBP is booted under windows, it still does not connect. My MBP is running OS X 10.9.4. My work wireless network uses a Linksys Wireless G Access Point model WAP54G v.2. Rebooting the router does not help. When my MBP tries to connect to the work wireless network, the status in Network Preferences says "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.216.147 and will not be able to connect to the Internet."  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Jackso,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
For troubleshooting a self-assigned IP address, I would suggest reading over and using the following article as a reference and resource.

  • NEW MacBook Pro Retina cracking sound problem

I recently bought a MacBook Pro Retina after using a MacBook Pro for a year.  From Day One my MacBook Pro Retina makes a cracking sound from the body on the right side. not acceptable from such a expensive machine. Apple would not replace it! Now I don't know what to expect, but I never expected this. Laptops worth 400bucks are not this cracky. After browsing through i see im not the only one with this problem. The local apple service center said they have checked it everything is fine and it is not damaged, it was a manufacturers defect. Why should I be the victim here?

Resetting the NVRAM/PRAM didn't work. The crackling sound is especially bad around the 4:00 mark in the following Killzone Shadow Fall preview:
    http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/20/watch-the-ps4s-killzone-shadow-fall-shared-di rect-from-the-con/
Several songs in the iTunes store, when previewing, also have the same crackling issue.
I'm just glad it's not crackling for every single video or song, at the very least.

  • Macbook pro15 retina mid 2012 bootcamp probs

    Hi everyone!
i just installed windows 7 home premium 64 bit on my 15 inch macbook pro retina mid 2012,
After i installed the bootcam 5 driver from Apple website, i have some problem such as:
    - My internet connection drop after a few minutes the reconnect than drop..... It's said no internet connection. It's not happen when i'm on MacOS Maverick just when i'm in Windows.
    - When i try to install graphic card driver, it's said " failed to install " i have to download from the NVIDIA website but it seem not to work very well.
When i'm playing game on windows 7 it's Lag and jiggle even with Lowest setting. I did searched over the internet and found out that it's a common problem for this Macbook pro retina mid 2012, it's believed that problem happened due to the bootcamp driver for windows but Apple still have no response to fix this.
My macbook pro has 16 Gb ram and 1 Gb GT650M, so i believed that it couldnt happen like this if i'm playing game in lowest setting.
Anyone have any suggestion on how i can fix those problems? It's very annoying when it's keep disconnecting to the internet

    Hello gerwintiemens,
I recommend resetting your SMC and your PRAM. Perhaps even a safeboot as well.

  • Macbook pro retina 13 battery problem?

Hello, I have macbook pro retina 13 with opened firefox and installed Sophos antivirus.
The battery at 80% says that 5 hours remain. Is that normal? The battery has 3 cycles.
    Thanks

No, it's not normal to install Sophos antivirus. Uninstall it: you're MacBook will thank you for it.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Screen Resolution Issues

I have just bought a retina display Macbook Pro (Early 2013) with OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion.
Before getting it, I did not realize what an effect it would have on the use of my existing programs, and had I known, I would have thought twice before switching from my non-Retina Macbook Pro. I have never had so many problems with a brand new computer. On my retina screen, programs such as Microsoft Office 2011, Adobe Creative Suite 5 and Acrobat Pro X run with an awful screen resolution and impossibile legibility. The pixelated graphics and image quality hurt my eyes, beyond the fact that I cannot see my lines, images and text properly in order to work with them.
In these programs, the "Open in Low Resolution" button is enabled permanatly and cannot be changed as it's option is ghosted out. I do not know how to make it look better or what to do. I cannot work using this low resolution and this issue has affected my productivity.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 2013 - Display Problems in iTunes

I just got my new MacBook Pro 13" Retina a few days ago from the Apple Online Store - there was the problem that the display flickered in itunes everytime when i started up a movie or in the iTunes Store the trailer of movies / and tv shows. Otherwise if i stopped the video in the full screen mode and gone back with esc to the itunes store there came up for few seconds the last pictures of the played movie.
I called to apple and they sent me a new one with (i cannot believe) the really same issue ...... now my question - has anybody of you the same problem or can help me and look it up if there's the same in itunes with that model -  I am not sure if its a software problem or a hardware issue with for example the graphics

Don't worry, there is nothing wrong with your computer. I have the same issue, and it is a bug. Sometimes a restart solves it. Sometimes and if you use subtitles, you will see the first line being displayed but the second one not, etc.
I have reported that to Apple and there is hope for a fix.

  • Macbook pro retina display video problems

I had recently bought a new 13" macbook pro with retina display in july and keep having problems viewing videos where the video freezes but the audio keeps going and then the picture jumps to real time. I have had an older macbook pro since 2008 and never had that problem. Is anyone else experiencing this?

You're asking a question that nobody can answer.
    Keep a good thought!
    Good luck!

  • Macbook pro retina screen flicking problem

I bought this 15 inches Macbook pro back in Nov, 2012. And I have the screen flicking problem in Dec.
The problem is the same here listed on youtube. You can find hundres of them just by searching "retina flicker" on youtube.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko6WCqw20ZE
And I did a lot of researches on this. I had also gone to the Apple Store 2 times, one Genius Bar Staff told me this has to be a hardware problem and offer to fix my laptop, others said it might be a software based problem and adviced me to wait for the new system update. I don't have time for a long fixing so I chose waiting. That particular one who told me to wait for the next software update also encourage me to dig deep and tried to find the root cause by myself...and I did. I found my screen flicking problem could caused by cellphone inteference. And It seems that the Wi-Fi antena is also a key component here. If I turn off Wi-Fi completely, the flickering went away.
    Some solutions I found online
    1. It can caused by Enable Safari webGL. So disable webGL and turn off develop mode
    2. Disable displaycard auto switch in Power saving tab
    3. Close the lid put the sytem into sleep and re-open the lid
    4. stop using Wi-Fi. That's right people, try disable Wi-Fi!! It's the only working solution for me.
    5. It could be caused by CDMA cellphones including US Verizon brand cellphones and many others. GSM cellphones are OK. Try to turn off your cellphone or drive to a empty plaza and try to see your laptop still flickering at your car. Turn off your cellphone when You do this.
    What doesn't work
    Reboot
    reinstall OS
go to Apple Store and change Logic Board (Someone reported that after logic board change, the problem came back after a while)
Let me know if you guys have any findings, Thanks!!

I'm sure that you've seen the problem with 'burn-in' and 'ghosting' on some MBP-R machines in threads on this forum. It doesn't seem to be an overwhelming problem, but some have reported it.
Did you buy it from an Apple Store or online? Either way, you need to get tough with Apple. Tell them you need to keep your computer and, when they deliver a replacement to your local Apple Store, you'll bring it in for exchange. That's what they've been doing with most people that have had MBP-R problems - I've never heard of them requesting that you send your computer back before they will exchange. Did you contact your local Apple Store or was this response from an AppleCare phone conversation. If the latter, take it into the Apple Store, explain what you want to do, and I'm sure that they will work with you.
    Good luck,

  • Macbook Pro Retina - Mac Mail Problem

I've just blown a fortune on a brand new retina display macbook pro. It's time for a fresh start after years of bugs and slow laptops so I've decided I don't want to migrate from my old macbook. I have multiple email addresses, some are pop and some are imap. I spent hours setting up all the addresses in mac mail only to find about 90% of the sent messages from one of the imap email addresses are missing (the most important adderss too!). The only ones in the sent folder are the ones sent using my iphone. Would I be correct in assuming all my sent message are no longer stored on my imap server? I can see them all if I use my old laptop so they must be lurking in a folder on that laptop somewhere. I've tried everything!! I tried deleting the mail folder from the library of my new laptop and the com.apple.mail.plist from the preferences. I then replaced them both with the ones on my old laptop... still the same problem. Any suggestions???

I've been using Mozilla Thunderbird on both Win PCs and Mac's for some time now and have no problems accessing both POP and IMAP accounts with it. I have 4 POP accounts and 2 IMAP accounts.
Switch to it from Windows Live Mail, which IMHO is just the pits, and then when I got my Mac and tried Mac Mail I said There has to be something better and found that Thunderbird also has a OS X version. So that is what I installed.
Been using it on Mac for almost 8 months now. No problems, at least none for me.

  • Would restoring a MacBook Pro (non-Retina) with a MacBook Pro (Retina) backup cause problems?

I have a Retina MacBook Pro and I recently bought a non-Retina MacBook Pro.  I wanted to have all my files and settings from my old MacBook on my new one so I backed up the Retina one using time machine and I used that backup to set up my new MacBook.  Will doing this cause any problems to the system?
    Thanks,

P.S. I have been experiencing some issues with wifi (it drops the connection often) and I am not sure if that is related.

    It should not.  Read this:
