Macbook Pro2,1 17" no video, charging issues

I have done a bit of research and think I know the answer but am hoping I am wrong. I have a three year old MacBook Pro 17" 2.33. I recently moved to a newer 15" unibody and passed this to my daughter. After two weeks she complained that the battery was not working. I looked at it and saw it was badly swollen. Removed it. Bought a new non-Apple replacement. everything was fine for a couple weeks and now the power manager in sys pref says the battery is 79% charged but machine will no boot or run off the battery. Sys. profile says it has voltage but no current. At the same time, the screen has gone black. Not totally off, but no backlight. I can see a very dim image on the screen. An external monitor works fine as long as the machine is plugged in to power.
So, question, what are the chances this is a bad battery AND the backlighting failed at the same time versus a bad logic board? We had a similar problem with my wife's 15" MBP of about the same vintage and Apple replaced the video board even out of warranty becasue it was a known issue. Anyone if that program is still in place or applicable?

Regardless of whether it's an open issue that can be fixed out of warranty or not you should make an appointment with the Genius Bar to get it looked at. Even if it's not covered anymore they may throw you a bone, who knows.
I would test another battery if possible to determine if it's an issue with the battery or if there's an issue with the logic board or charger that is causing you trouble. In any case the backlight should work with the adapter plugged in though so it is almost guaranteed toast.
Save yourself the headache and take the Genius Bar appointment and get it looked at so you can see exactly what's wrong and if there's anything that can be done, and if it's covered, before getting too far into thing.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Battery Re-Charging Issue

Hey everyone, I discovered a problem on my 2011 MBP 17" which I was told that "it's perfectly normal' and I want to see if you guys can reproduce it on your new 2011 models as well (please indicate your screen size).
In summary, I noticed that depending on CPU usage, the battery reacharge time will greatly fluctuate to the point where the laptop just stops charging the battery. I noticed the giant fluctuations in time when I booted one of my VMs which used up like 15-20% overall cpu usage. I was at 5% battery life and the computer was plugged in recharging and the battery indicator all of the sudden went from somewhere around 2.5 hours recharge time to 10 hours to 15 then 20 hours. Then at some point the magsafe light went green and the battery indicator showed 'Not Charging'.
I thought that I may have a bad MagSafe so I tried the one from my 2009 MBP (both are the 85W version) and bam same problem. I figured that this may be due to a design flaw where the power unit cannot supply enough tower to feed a CPU that's being somewhat taxed (i'm talking about 25-50% usuage) and recharge a battery.
Here is a simple way to try to reproduce the problem:
    1. Let you battery drain to about 80% or less.
    2. Close all open programs.
    3. Change your battery indicator icon in the menu bar to display the info as 'Time'.
    4. Plug in your MagSafe and let the recharge time in the battery indicator calculate and stabilize (give it about 2 mins to get a stable time value).
    5. Open up safari and go to Hulu and play any TV show to drive up your cpu usage.
    6. Then open Terminal and type the command 'yes' (without the quotes) and hit enter. The 'yes' command basically causes an infinite loop of the letter 'y' to be display in the terminal window which also taxes your CPU in addition to the video playing in Hulu.
    7. Now watch the battery indicator's recharge time value and you should notice that it'll start going up significantly in time and at some point it'll say 'Recalculating' and eventually it'll give up and say 'Not Charging'. I have a 2009 MBP 17" C2D 2.66GHz, and although the recharge time goes up by 20-30% in the exact same test, it at least still charges the battery.
I was able to reproduce this at the apple store on a 17" 2011 model as well but I'm curious if this also happens on the 15 and 13 inch models. I was told by the engineering team on the phone that this is 'perfectly normal'. I guess it falls in the category of malfunctions as designed...

TheRosta, jkirker and zapatillo: Everything you report is normal. Under heavy load, more power is delivered to the CPU/GPU/other hardware and less to the battery charging circuitry. Under very heavy load, all power goes to the processors and none to the battery, and under extreme loads, power is drawn from the battery to supplement what is provided by the AC adapter. All of this is by design.
You might well ask why Apple didn't just provide a more powerful AC adapter. I don't know Apple's reason(s), of course, but one possible explanation is that the machine couldn't dissipate the additional heat that would be generated by feeding 20, 30 or 50 more watts into it. If that's the case, then maybe the present 85W adapter is the best compromise Apple could devise between providing sufficient power and managing heat effectively, without completely redesigning and enlarging the MBP case to accommodate bigger fans and heat sinks and more air circulation space.

  • Early 08 MacBook charging issue?

    Hiya,
I recently purchased a black macbook off of eBay. I fixed an issue with the hard drive structure (white screen of death) and it's a neat little computer. What I did notice was a problem were the batteries. This computer came with a black and a white OEM battery, both of which had rapidly 1 rapidly flashing green light. I had thought that this meant that the batteries were almost completely decharged (MacBook Pro does the same thing when on reserve battery). I took it to the apple store to get checked out, and the diagnostics showed that the black battery (didnt have the white one with me) was in the green (normal) section, and that it wasn't a problem. The Geniuses discovered that the component of the computer that charges the battery was faulty and needed to be replaced. When I went to go pick up my computer from the repair today, I noticed that the black battery inside it didn't have any flashing lights (when the indicator button was pressed), and assumed it was completely uncharged. I borrowed a charger from one of the computers on a personal setup table (it was a T-style), and the battery had the 10:00 (0%) until charged issue. The light on the charger was orange, and the indicator on Leopard shows that the battery was charging.
What's interesting to me though is that when I took it home and left it plugged in (L-style MacBook Pro charger, 85watt, was told it was ok), it charged for around 10 mins, then the light turned green, and the status bar says (0%, Battery is not charging). When I check the level of the battery with the button, it flashes the single green light again. I charged the white battery and got the same results. The black battery has around 650 cycles and the white battery has around 720. I downloaded coconutBattery and did some examination, and found that both batteries have an Amperage of -1, but both still have 91% of capacity (lifespan is my guess). I can post pictures of the coconutBattery/system reports from both batteries, and both are listed by system profiler as in Normal Condition.
I did run software update on this recently, and the only things that can be updated are applications, java, etc. This macbook is running Leopard 10.5.8, and has the 1.4 (1.31) firmware installed for the use of L-shaped power adapters. The power adapter works fine and charges the battery on my MBP, but unfortunately it's the only adapter I have to use at the moment. I have reset the SMC and NVRAM numerous times to no avail. If you have any info about this, please post.
    Thanks!
    ~Dan

What's odd is that after pressing the MagSafe adapter into the computer (with pressure), the light changes from Green to Orange and says it is charging. It has been in this state for 10-15 minutes, and hasn't risen from 0%. The white battery doesn't charge at all. I tried resetting the PMU and PRAM again to no avail. What I notice is that as soon as I plug in the adapter, it turns green and doesn't charge the battery. However, once I press the adapter into the socket, it turns Orange and says it's charging.
The battery info says that the battery is taking in 0 mAh, so I'd be lead to thinking that it's a glitch with the power system that tells the adapter the battery is being charged

  • I just brought Macbook pro(without retina display) on 15 june 2013 and since then put it on 6-7 hours of charging but still my macbook pro is not 100% charged. but why? (green light is displayed on the adapter pin)

i just brought Macbook pro(without retina display) on 15 june 2013 and when i switched it on the battery was 72 % charged and now the battery is charged to 62%, i used the charger that came with it and kept it for 6-7 hours on charging but it is not charged to 100% but why? also the green light is always on when i plug the charger with my mac book pro. Please tell me the meaning of Green light on power cord lid (mac book pro not charging or charging?) and also the other light if there like amber or any other colour.

    Hello Shailendras33,
Congratulations on your new MacBook Pro!  Thank you for providing all the information about what is going on with the charging issue.
Firstly, I found some information on page 11 of the MacBook Pro User Guide about what each color of the LED means on the Power Adapter:
When you first connect your power adapter to your MacBook Pro, an indicator light on the
MagSafe connector starts to glow.  An amber light indicates the battery is charging.  A green light indicates that the battery is fully charged.
You can find the MacBook Pro User Guide here (this is not for the latest MacBook Pro, but the information about the MagSafe adapter is true for the newest model):
    MacBook Pro User Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/macbook_pro_15inch_late_2011.pdf
It sounds like you are not getting the amber light indicating your computer is charging, and you are noticing that the battery level is depleting.  I recommend resetting your System Management Controller when something like this is occurring:
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Quicktime 7.6 video playback issues

I upgraded to quicktime 7.6 yesterday and is has caused video playback issues when in higher performance with my Macbook pro. I am trying to play 1080p footage in the h.264 compression codec and it is now stuttering. It played fine in my previous quicktime player before the upgrade and it seems to play fine in the better battery setting. The problem occurs with the 9600 nvidia chip but the 9400 works okay. This is troublesome because the 9600 should out preform the 9400.

Update: The problem only happens with MacOS 10.5.6. Running the pre-installed MacOS 10.5.5 the 9400M and 9600M displays movies smoothly using QuickTime 7.6. Disabling hardware-accelerated playback by deleting the "AppleVAH264HW.component" in "/System/Library/Quicktime" also "solves" the problem.

  • Why won't my macbook pro play youtube videos?

Why wont my macbook pro play youtube videos????
I bought this over the summer and it's now Nov 28th. I've had it with this thing and nobody is answering my question! Please help!
I reset safari, emptied my cache, cleared my history, uninstalled and re-installed flash player and nothing has helped. In fact, un/reinstalling flash player worsened the problem. And I cannot update it becuase it says "not recognized".
I do have avast anti-virus: but I can't fix the warnings in it (after I scan, some warnings popup and it wont let me fix it and I have no idea where to find it in the computer itself). Does this have anything to do with it? I need virus protection, so I dont want to get rid of it.
I do not have the money to buy firefox (and it's never worked for me ever anyways).
I know it's not my internet because my dad's pc works great and my sister's mac (for school) loads youtube videos instantly.
I also have this annoying issue where every page on the interned needs to be reloaded three times before itll load the first time. It sits there for five minutes and does nothing, then I reload the page and BAM its loaded: EXCEPT YOUTUBE.
For a $1400 machine, I'd like to know what and why this is happening.

Perhaps there is something wrong with your software and/or a corrupt cache file outside of the browser.

Hmm hard to tell what's causing this. May have to do a process of elimination to cure everything on the machine.

Uninstall the anti-virus, they always cause issues on Mac's.
You say you need anti-virus, so install the free ClamXav, it's a program you run as you need it, because 99% of the malware out there is for Windows and won't run on a Mac, thus you can just run ClamXav when you need it on where you need it. Won't bugger up the machine.
I do not have the money to buy firefox (and it's never worked for me ever anyways).
Firefox is a free web browser by the open source community, it's very powerful and highly customizable with more add-ons, extensions, personas, themes than any other browser. Some things  can be done on Firefox can't be done on any other browser at all. Certainly for someone who is a bit more seasoned to use it fully.

You mentioned your "dad" and you've mentioned a delay loading pages and not YouTube at all.
Are you by any chance the Administrator of the computer? Can you install Firefox if you wanted too just as a experiment or does it ask for a Admin name and password and you can't provide it?
"Nannyware" has the ability to block sites and slow down page draws as it's consulting with the nannyware company if that site is suitable to be loaded on your machine.
If your are the Admin of the machine, then your going to have to methodically go through the fix it list I've generated here to resolve your issue as I cant' tell what's causing your problem specifically behind a screen.
If it's too much for you, take the machine to a local Mac/PC software repair shop and they can fix you up.
I suspect by #12 your machine will be fixed.

It's clear that the battery has got enough capacity to work correctly, so something happens with the MagSafe port or its charger. If you have another charger, try it, and if not, take the MacBook and the charger to an Apple Store or reseller. It's better to do this as we don't know if the problem is in the charger or in the MacBook Pro

  • Video Card Issue? Seems atypical.

2012 Macbook Pro 15" Mountain Lion   Bootcamp Win 7 Pro.  While idle in Windows, screen went to gray and fans went high gear.  Goes to gray on reboot after Windows startup logo.  Goes to gray after initial spinning wheel on Mac side.  In Mac Safemode, after the loading of the progress bar, the screen cycles through about 3 seconds of fast moving lines and distortion then goes to a gray screen with hard to see verticle pinkish lines.  BUT the computer still boots into Windows safemode with Networking and works fine, so this does not seem to be the dreaded 2012 video card issue.  Am stumped!

I just bought my macbook pro and it's charged up to 100% and is still plugged in but now shows the battery at 98%.  How is this possible when it's plugged in to the charger and the green light is on?

The system regularly lets the battery drop to about 95% when on the charger, then recharges to 100%.  This lets the batery exercise "just a little" all of the time and saves the recharge curcuits from overuse.
    Regualr occurence for me.
Also ... you need to let your battery work at least once per month.  Let it run down to 40%, but not less if you can at all avoid it.  Running thr battery fully dead will shorten the battery life significantly.

Macbook pro to HDTV, video is working but audio is not working, how to make audio work as well

If you use an HDMI cable, the audiostream will be integrated, so there will be sound when using an HDMI cable!
Not necessarily.  That only works as stated if you have one of the most recent MBP's that has a built-in HDMI port.
If the MBP only has a Thunderbolt or miniDisplayPort, you need an appropriate adapter cable and even if you use an HDMI adapter or cable to connect to your HDTV there is no guarantee it will carry audio.  You have to determine if your specific MBP model supports audio out through its miniDisplayPort or Thunderbolt output, and whether the adapter does likewise.

  • Macbook Pro 13 (Early 2011) Charging Problems

Recently I noticed that when I charge my macbook pro, the LED light on the magsafe would go green then orange to show that it is charging. However after a few minutes or seconds the orange LED light will go off (Stops Charging) and the whole process of charging starts again, green light then orange then nothing...
I already tried resetting the PRAM and SMU. I also tried using different wall sockets for charging and it yielded the same results. However, when i borrowed my friends mac charger, my MBP manage to charge without any problems. When he used my charger the charging problem also occurred.
So i decided to bring it to an Apple Authorized service provider sine they are no Apple Retail Stores in Thailand. I told the guy at the AASP that my charger was probably broken/faulty, but he said it was the receiver sensor of the macbook pro (The place where i connect the magsafe to my MBP ). He used a different charger (At the counter)and the LED lights when from Green, Orange then yellow and said the MBP needed to be sent to Singapore to be repaired and it would take 10 - 14 days. I said OK since my MBP was still in warranty and it would be free. Next day he called and said he fixed it by resetting something and that I could pick it up. At the AASP, the macbook pro didnt show any charging problems so i brought it home to charge.
Now it has the same charging problem as before...

Do you have another power adapter to try? If so, can you use the power adapter that came with this mac?
Do you have another MBP? If so can you use this power adapter on that MBP?
Are you using another pointing device or is it the one built right into the laptop? If you are using another pointing device try purchasing a new one or disconnecting or reconnecting or even try on another computer.
You might be only able to get buy for the next few month until you graduate until you can get your computer fixed. If all else fails go buy yourself a $8 mouse from a place, it will work until you can get this fixed... or buy apple mice if that is a big deal to you.

Or if you want the one I have used: (M515 @ home or HP Wired Mouse-- Its kind of old) This isn't the exact one but they discontinued that one: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/mice/devices/mouse-m100 so for $10 you get a mouse and your computer works.
