MacBook problem

Can someone help me with this issue. I have a Macbook with a processor speed of: 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and Memory of: 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. I am unable to type anything when I go to my browser or my TextEdit. I have tried using the Install disk however I still can not type anything. I have tried "Safe Mode" "Nada!" I have be "trolling" any YouTube, MacRumors, my MacBook will not respond. Both my mouse and trackpad work.
Any help is appreciated!

Just got back from the Apple store here in SF. The techie didn't know the exact problem, so they declared it DOA (Dead on Arrival).
He then asked if I wanted a new one or send the dead one in for repair. I chose to get a new one since the MacBook is only 2 days old and I don't have anything on it.
I am very impressed with Apple Support.
It might have been the RAM, might not. So thanks to those who wanted to help!
(also, it's Jarques, not Jacques )

  • MacBook problems with Snow base station - other laptops work fine

    Hi,
I just purchased a new MacBook to replace an iBook G4 800.
My snow base station works fine with the old iBook G4 (which has an extreme card) and with a borrowed PowerBook G4 Aluminum 1.5 GHz (also extreme card) but will not work with my new Mac Book. Every time I try to connect - I receive an error "There has been an error accessing "my name" 's network. Sometimes it will connect, other times (most of the time), it will not.
My MacBook connects fine to my neighbors Linksys access points and our work Lucent access points (which are b also - snow is b).
I did a search and am reading other people having similiar problems. I was wondering if anyone has resolved their problems. I spent 2 plus hours on the phone with Apple yesterday. They are placing the blame on the older base station (snow) but it is obvious that snow is working fine for other computers.
    Theresa

I am still a little confused. I can be 2 feet from my base station and will keep hitting "try again" when trying to access my network and will get "an error has occurred" many times and eventually it will connect and I will have an incredibly strong signal. My MacBook will continue to have a great strong signal until it goes to sleep and then I will have a difficult time connecting again. My neighbors base station is a weak signal and I can easily join their network. Every time I connect, I have problems but once connected, it is great.
I guess it can be interference but I am now wondering if it is related to the snow/graphite base station only. This laptop has no problems joining other b base stations.
I spent hours on the phone with an Apple wireless support specialist the other night. He wants me to try an Extreme base station. He didn't indicate that he was aware of any MacBook problems (and he mentioned interference and we setup my laptop to only join my network and it didn't make a difference).
More to come.... IF anyone switched to a Extreme Base Station and that worked fine - please let me know. Though I sort of resent having a functional b base station that works with every other laptop and have to spend $200 towards another base station because of a new laptop.

  • Macbook problems, hard drive crash, random shutdown, freezes

I bought my macbook used a few months ago, and it worked flawlessly until about 3 weeks ago. The system started freezing and not booting (getting folder icon instead of apple at startup). I ran drive setup and tried to repair the drive, but this did not fix the problem. DiskWarrior also could not fix it. I pulled the drive and installed a new hard drive, as I wanted a larger capacity anyways. All my problems appeared fixed for about two weeks, then similar problems began occurring. I backed up all the files I needed to an external firewire drive and attempted to reformat the new internal drive. Drive Setup says it can not reformat the drive - can't mount it and if it does, the drive disappears while in the process of formatting. I pulled the new drive and am having it replaced under warranty. I am using the firewire drive to run my computer, and this seemed to work fine for a day or two until the computer just started shutting down with no warning. Everything goes black, including the little light on the front of the computer. I have to hold down the power button for 10 seconds before it lets me start the computer back up. I had read this may be a memory issue, so I ran memtest and it says the memory is fine (I need to do it in single user mode still, however). I also tried pulling both sticks of ram. They are both 1GB crucial memory. I put each stick in by itself and tried it in both slots and was able to reproduce the shutdown issue with any ram configuration of either stick.
After all this, I realized the firewire drive was only running 10.5, so I updated all the software through software update, and it is now running 10.5.2. It seems to be working better as I have not experienced a random shutdown yet, but I'm anticipating it may start back up soon. Today, however I experienced a different problem - the screen froze on me and the only way to get anything to happen was to force a shutdown with them power button. It's restarted and seems to be working fine again for now.
I've run some logs and here's some things I've found:
When the latest freeze happened, I got this repeated over 100 times:
    Apr 29 11:04:31 jon-turners-macbook quicklookd[536]: CGContextClosePath: no current point.
    I've also seen this:
    Apr 29 11:18:19 jon-turners-macbook kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: 3
    Apr 29 11:18:19 jon-turners-macbook kernel[0]: GFX0: family specific matching fails
Apr 25 19:19:50 localhost kernel[0]: hi mem tramps at 0xffe00000
Should there be anything else I can check? I would run Apple Hardware Utilities, but I don't have the original disks, just the Leopard installer. I have Disk Warrior, but it seems strange this would happen with multiple systems and drives. I'd like to get Techtool Pro, but haven't had the money/time to order it yet.

    Thanks for the replies!
Yeah, I think it's the HDD. I was just worried that the RAM was bad and corrupted the HDD or something, but given the symptoms I think you guys are right. Ordered a 7200RPM 320GB HDD off Amazon Prime...will be here tomorrow
I'll post how it goes after I finish installing it. I'm backing up as I type.
I wonder if I can fix the ir port and the sleep indicator light when I install the hard-drive. The sleep indicator light never turns off. It stays on as long as my computer is on, only turns off when I shut it down.

  • Macbook problem since latest firmware update

Really worried about this, have a Macbook 13" Aluminium, I updated to 10.5.7 yesterday with no problems, today though whilst watching a dvd, it just shutdown completely with no warning and now it won't restart at all, the battery was fully charged (on charge at the time) but now there is now power at all, even when the mag adapter is plugged in there is no light to show anything is happening.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance

I am having the exact same problem on my macbook, same model as you.
I tried using external USB iMic, but still I get get the crackle and pop noises in garageband if the airport is turned on. When I turn off the airport sounds fine but I like to download loops ad sounds from the internet while working in garageband. This is annoying.

  • Macbook problems

hey ya just wondering if anyone can help me I have a 21 month old macbook and have been having a few problems with it as of recent weeks I have listed the problems below and i can not think of any reason for these problems.
    1. Computer takes about 1 min and 15 seconds to boot up and sometime but not always slow to load programs and get a spinning ball when loading programs.
    2. Computer feels very hot even when it says that the fan speed is at 1800rpm and the temp is around 50c
    3. The fan sounds very loud sometimes when i first switch on my computer.
    4. It will ocasionally crash when loading if i have plugged my usb external hard drive in before turning the macbook on.
Doe's anyone know what could cause these problems as I am wondering what to do because i am a student studying music and use my computer everyday for research and assignments and am wondering if i should just upgrade and get a new one or take it to the mac shop and see if they can sort these problems out and maybe end up paying a small fortune any help that can be given would be great.

ok i'm wondering if replacing the hard drive is worth as i can't identify what has caused the corruption i was told that it could come from a program that i recently installed and am now thinking i could just get a new macbook and install only logic and reason on there what do people think
I think you changed your thought process about 5 times in that one sentence. So let's take a deep breath and figure things out.
1.) Adding RAM will not rectify a HD data corruption issue
2.) Did the place that identified the HD issue indicate it was a software issue with the HD or a hardware issue with the drive? Some HD issues can be resolved simply by partitioning the HD, you'll want to backup all your data first.
Also, where does a new machine fit into the equation? It'd seem unnecessary to spend $900+ to fix an issue with a HD that'll run you $100 to fix (if that) by replacing the drive.

  • Macbook Problems: Hard Drive Failure or Bad Ram?

I bought a used Black Macbook several months ago. Everything was fine until recently I ran into some problems. It wouldn't boot one day at all, so I wiped the drive clean and reinstalled Snow Leopard. Once again everything was fine for a while until the same thing happened and I once again wiped and reinstalled. The first time it happened I used diskwarrior and disk utility to try and repair the drive with no luck. The weird thing is that after reinstalling I can check the disk and it verifies as ok until one day it fails.
I know that the guy I bought the laptop from upgraded the RAM and the HDD. He didn't do such a good installing the HDD since the IR port and Sleep Indicator Light don't function properly anymore. I've read that happens a lot when installing a new HDD.
    So, Here are the symptoms:
    Disk Failures
Erratic boot times: Sometimes only 90 seconds, sometimes as long as 13 minutes
Hang ups, beach balls in normal every day tasks
Complete system freezes during normal use
I've never had a kernel panic.
Recently when the system wouldn't boot I ran in verbose mode and it said something about error reading kernel cache Error 0x80000020
Is this definitely my HDD, or could my RAM be causing this?

    Thanks for the replies!

  • Apple TV remote causing macbook problems

Hey so my girlfriend picked me up an Apple TV, this is amazing, BUT the stupid remote is what is causing some problems. Every time i use it for the apple TV, it affects my mac itunes as well. Ive gone into the security and disabled the inferred thing, but then that stops the syncing from the apple TV to my macbook pro.
Question: Is there anyway i can totally block the remote from working with my macbook, while still allowing the Apple TV to sync, or is there a way to pair the Apple TV to my mac, not to iTunes, ive done that already.
    Thank you everything

What you need to do is pair the laptop remote with the laptop.
By pairing the Apple tv remote with the Apple tv you are ensuring that the Apple tv can only be used with the Apple tv remote, you are not ensuring that the Apple tv remote won't control other devices as well.
laptop remote paired with the laptop = the laptop can only be controlled with the laptop remote.

  • Aging Macbook Problems - sound going out/shutting down randomly when unplugged

My macbook is from July/Aug 2007, so it's not quite 5 years old. One of the problems I have been experiencing is when I have a full charge and unplug it, usually around 80% or so, it'll just completely shut down. Doesn't matter if I'm running one thing or multiple things. I've had my current battery for almost two years now. My cycle count is 150. The battery isn't bloated or anything. (My last one started to, which is why I got the new one.) Since the cycle count is so few, it should still be under warranty, I believe, if that's the probable cause of the shutdowns.
I have also been getting kernel panics maybe once every other week or so for a little bit now. Usually it happens when I'm watching video online and it'll freeze and the message pops up. Only just researched more about it and found this: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Going to do some troubleshooting and see if I can figure that one out. Any chance it's related to the random shutdowns when I'm not plugged in?
The last thing I've noticed is also when I'm watching video online, sometimes my sound will go out and will be replaced with an intermittent crackling sound. I read a few forums and found that if I put headphones in and out of the jack, it'll fix the sound back to normal. This sound problem doesn't happen very frequently, but a lot of the time when it does, it'll happen a couple of times in one sitting. So far, I've never noticed it happening when I'm using Itunes or watching a DVD, only stuff online like youtube or when watching my slingbox, etc.
Any helpful comments are greatly appreciated!

Ummm, nope. All due respects, this problem cropped up suddenly, at about the same time, for multiple users, on different laptop types. Probability of all this happening at once due to simultaneous hardware failures is much lower than if it was caused by say a software update not playing well with something (a piece of 3rd party software, etc). I'm having the same exact problem, I have put a new battery in, same thing happens.
This is similar to 3 or so years ago when widgets were first introduced, laptop battey lifes dropped to about 1/3 and the machines heated up. General consensus was it must be hardware, well no it was software, and a software fix took care of it. I'm hoping someone figures this out soon...
    Thanks

  • ?Macbook problem with Safari quitting.

I had a problem with my MacBook not starting up.
I tried a lot of suggestions from this forum and eventually did the disc repai, permissions repair and disc verify procedures, and it appeared to come good.
But there are two problems- one, whenever I hit the spacebar the screen jumps down so I can no longer see the space I am typing in.
Second, Safari keeps quitting unexpectedly, which makes typing anything at all a waste of time.
I am using a black MacBookwith the 2.16 Intel core 2 Duo, and running version 10.6
Hope somebody can set me straight!

  • Two MacBook Problems - Camera and Startup

Alright, I just got my MacBook recently, and I have two minor problems.
    1) The camera. I open PhotoBooth, and it just shows a green screen. I used to be able to take pictures, but now all it does it show a green screen. And the green status light by the lens on the screen is on, and it won't turn off.
    2) Slowness. Not majorly slow, it's just not going as fast as it did when I first got it, which was about four days ago. Startup is a bit slow, as is running programs. Can I do anything to resolve this?
    Thanks very much!

  • Fed up with MacBook problems

has anyone else tried to return their MacBook because of all of the problems ?
I've had mine for about 3 months, and frankly I'm ready to give it back to Apple.
Terrible heat issues, my LCD casing is bubbling, and now after the latest firmware update my fan runs at full speed constantly.
As a long time ThinkPad user, I'm really, really disappointed. I love using OS X but these problems are just too much.
    Please help.
    MacBook 2.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I took my MacBook into AppleCare for the LCD
bubbling. They had it for several days before finally
telling me to "hold off" for a while and bring it
back in later since it was covered under the
    manufacturer warranty.
I hope you did jus that. It is covered, get it repaired.
Look, the heat output of this laptop alone almost
makes it unusable. But that plus now my fan runs all
the time and I'm at my wits end.
Did you install the SMC firmware? Mine was also hot and that helped a lot (-10°C). It could help for the fan too. If it doesn't work, have it repaired. If you have it repaired too many times, ask for an exchange.
As for the MB temperature, I would say that with the new firmware, you shouldn't get anything over 65°C, maybe even 60°C in normal use. Try CoreTempDuo or iNano to find out.

  • Dell 2408 - MacBook problem

Brand new MacBook, brand new 2408WFP. Connected from minidisplay-vga. The problem I am having is that about every 10 minutes the display goes black and reconnects only when I touch my mouse. Very frustrating, I called Apple support and they took me through troubleshooting and determined it wasn't the Mac. I haven't called Dell yet (got stuck on hold).
My monitor settings: 1920x1200 60 Hz. When I switched down to 1600x1000 at 75 Hz, the problem appeared to go away. However I want the 1920x1200 setting. There is no way I can adjust the speed manually (other Hz settings are greyed out).
    Some other tidbits
    - the 2408 monitor is fine with my old PC running Windows XP
    - my old Dell 19" monitor is fine with the new Mac - it's not a widescreen monitor.
    - Apple says it's not their problem
    Any advice?
    Thanks
    Sam

I have spent 2+ hours on the phone with Apple support, been escalated three times, no answer.
All of the work-arounds have failed. Found out that numerous others have this problem.
Should I return my MacBook? This is bad.

  • Wi-Fi Share file transfer PlayBook-MacBook problem

Following instructions in KB26068, I set up Wi-Fi Sharing wireless file transfer from my MacBook to my PlayBook, but there is a glitch.  When I select a file from a MacBook folder and drag it to the Media icon on the desktop, I get the message:
“One or more items can’t be copied to “media” because you don’t have permission to read them.”
This happens with every file, regardless of type, that I attempt to transfer, even, a Word file I have created myself.  I suspect there is a simple switch setting I have to change; can anyone help?  Thanks,

  • Macbook problem - this is a complicated one...

    MacBook Pro - snow leopard - 15inch, 2.53ghz dual mid 2009
I've been using macs for some 20 yrs, this current machine has served me well for some 5+ years, so I consider myself an experienced user, I'm totally at home with mac gear, fitting ram, hard drives etc etc (the machine is factory standard, apart form a new hard drive fitted as an attempt to resolve these problems)
The problem started last week when  the spinning beachball appeared on startup when one enters the password/selects the user. No matter what, the ball persisted. I reset, pram, nvram, smc, reinstalled all my files etc from a time machine back up, all to no avail. Any and all peripherals have been detached to check it wasn't a conflict issue there, even the apple power cable.
Days have been spent on this. I've run the apple hardware test (extended) on the utilities disk - all ok. I've run diskwarrior, techtool pro deluxe, onyx.... all find no hardware faults whatsoever - only software ones: minor file issues which have all been resolved without issue.
I've reset permissions, disk verification etc..
Then I've 100% erased the disk and reinstalled the entire system software and then it would start up, but hang once one it got part way through the numerous questions - eg: select language, country, etc..
I then installed a different hard drive - a new hitachi 1tb disk 7200rpm. At the same time I used a blower to remove any fan dust etc while the machine was open. All system software installed ok, but again it stalled with the beachball at the select country etc stages (I was not trying to transfer any data from another mac/time machine backup, rather going for a clean new install).... Faced with this failure I selected the option that I wanted to move data from a time machine back up instead and this time it worked, but again the machine hung on startup after the time machine back up had completed.
Then when starting up the machine it would hang at the password stage, or startup and then when the desktop appeared hang, or once it made it even further allowing me to boot up software programs but later froze. Now its back to hanging on the password/user startup page.
So everything has been reset, clean installs, thorough hardware testing, software conflicts ruled out as I've done totally clean installs purely from apple original dvds, rest every parameter. Run every diagnostic I can find and ruled out the idea its a secondary minor battery issue as I believe these MacBooks do not have a small battery to remember minor things rather using a capacitor charged from the main battery.
Perhaps its a very random breakage somewhere, fractured solder etc, but would prefer not to buy a secondhand tested logic board and tentatively install when the issue may not be this at all.
Finally the ram is the original apple installed units and has passed every diagnostic test...
So any ideas would be appreciated... many thanks

    Hi, Kairty,
I see you're new here. This is a user-to-user forum. Apple tech support doesn't actively participate. It's a big holiday weekend for many people so, it may take a little while for someone to get over Xmas dinner, log on, see your post and know what the answer is. You can contact Apple directly using the info found through the link "Contact Us" which is found at the lower right of every page.
You might also try searching for your problem in search box that appears under the words "Search Discussions" (as opposed to the one at the very top of the page).
