MacBook ProS not finding router

Recently BOTH my MacBook Pros (2010) have consistently failed to find my wireless router.  This is a new problem and applies to both laptops - but not necessarily at the same time
Other networks appear on the list - but my network does not appear, repeatedly, then suddenly it does appear and all is OK.
Our iPhones never have this problem.  Nor does my 'smart' TV.
So it seems that it is not a router problem.
Once logged on neither laptop drops the connection; but if I close the laptops and reopen them it is a matter of chance if it "sees" my router.
Has some recent "upgrade" caused this problem please?  And more important is there a cure?

Hi Adrian
BobRz suggested in another thread that I should change the channel that my router is using.  It was possble that someone else's more powerful router on the same channel was drowning mine - even though my laptop was only 2 metres from the router.
I did that and, so far, it has worked.  I have loged in and out three times on both machines and they "found" my network instantly.
He also suggested a systems preference method as well.  I have pasted that bit of his advice below.
Good luck
Bill
I think it's a possibility, and it's very easy to try. Obviously, do it when you're comfortable. Wifi problems are a bear to troubleshoot sometimes. I also have a mid-2010 and in my case it turned out to be an internal cable that had failed. That seems unlikely on two machines at the same time though. The point is it took quite awhile to figure that out. The other thing you can try is to go to System Preferences / Network. Choose your wifi network, then click Advanced and the wifi tab. Drag your network to the top of the list and use the - key to get rid of any unneeded networks you may have in there. Sometimes the list gets long over time and that screws things up as well.

  • 13" MacBook Pro not finding partition in disk utility.

Early/mid February, my ~5 month old MacBook Pro froze on me.  I forced it into a shut down and tried to re start it.  Instead of going through the normal boot processes, it sat idle for several minutes before displaying a flashing folder with a question mark on it.  I shut it back down, cleared the PRam, and nothing.  I opened into recovery utility and had to wait about an hour for it to load internet recovery, as it wasn't finding the recovery partition.  After an hour long talk with support and having no answer, I took it to a genius.  He confirmed that it was finding the hard drive, but not finding any partitions on it, and he then ran a diagnostic on it and it ran fine immediately after.  I was able to make a backup on my 1TB drive and we then repartitioned it and restored from my backup and we placed an order for a new hard drive as well as a cable..  I took my MacBook home satisfied, but as soon as I got home, it again could not find the partition.  I went back a couple days later and we replaced the HD and the cable.  Everything has been absolutely peachy until today.  After an hour car ride in the opposite direction of my closest Apple store to my girlfriend's house for the weekend, I booted it up tonight and it is repeating what it did 2 months ago.  Again, I have ran through everything we did before to no avail.  My computer sees my hard drive, but no partition.
I guess I'm just wondering what the **** is going on here.  I have never heard of such a problem with any Apple products and am wondering why this has happened to me twice on the same laptop (that was bought in August, 2012).
This is more than an inconvenience for me, as I already live 2 hours away from my Apple store and have a large paper to write over the weekend.  This also means at least one more trip to spend the day having someone else confirm what I already know and then probably another to replace my hard drive again, with no guarantee that this will happen again.  I know that the easiest fix would be to make the switch to SSD, but that is not really in my price range right now and I'm hoping over the summer I'll be able to sell this and get a Retina.  Anyways, what is going on here and is there any thing I can do to fix this and/or prevent this from happening in the future?

I was able to submit this question through recovery mode.  I had to wait 30 minutes to load up internet recovery, as it isn't finding a recovery partition.  As I said in OP, it just couldn't find a partition.  Well, after closing out of disk utility to open up Safari through recovery, it is no longer finding not only any partitions, but no hard drive whatsoever.  Just got off the phone with support, nothing I didn't know already.  Taking it to a specialist within the next few days.

  • Macbook Pro not finding internal SSD

After waking my Macbook Pro from sleep, it was incredibly sluggish to get going. Decided to restart it. Upon reboot, I get the image of a folder with a question mark on it. Convinced myself that I had corrupted my SSD, I stuck in my old Snow leopard boot disk and ran disk utility. Couldn't find it so took it out and stuck it in my external enclosure. Mac picked it up straight away and I was able to boot into it from my external enclosure.
I've had HDD failures before, they're easy to recover from - however this seems slighly more severe. Any ideas as to what it could be? Has my SATA cable somehow broken?

  • Why does my MacBook Pro not find USB hard drive after waking from sleep?

is this a known issue? i have to manually turn off/on the Mac's Airport to re-establish USB HD connection (or Time Machine won't find it either).

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is "iffy" and *+not supported by Apple.+* See [Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Airport.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
It sounds like you're using that disk for other things besides your backups; if so, and if you're going to continue backing-up that way, it really should be partitioned so Time Machine has it's own, exclusive space. See #Q1 in the same link.
Time Machine should find it's partition when OSX wakes up; if it doesn't, try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

Can i erase my stolen macbook pro with find my mac even if it states the device was locked on a specific date (not by me) after being stolen?

Barry, the other stolen computer, my IMac does not show me a locked on such and such date, but simply says offline.  I set that computer to erase when it goes online and notify me when it is found, and to play a tone and play a message that the police are on their way!

  • Why will macbook pro not go to sleep with Lion OS?

Why will macbook pro not go to sleep with Lion OS?

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
    Step 2
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
    Step 3
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
    Step 5
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • I have a problem with using MacBook Pro as wifi router when connected to ethernet

I have a problem with using MacBook Pro as wifi router when connected to ethernet. The Airport icon changes to show a laptop inside, my iPad shows connected (I think) but Safari will not operate. I tried pinging my iPad, it seems to see the iPad, but no connection to Safari or to other apps such as Good on the iPad. I have read many posting and tried repeatedly via Sharing in Systems Preferences, but no luck. Suggestions to fix, or is this a Lion problem?

Usually this is a problem related to the domain name server address. If you open Network preferences, select your Ethernet port then click on the Advanced button then on the DNS tab. You will likely see an entry like 10.0.1.1 already listed. Click on the Add [-] button and enter 208.67.222.222 then click on the OK button and then on the Apply button.  See if this helps.
if it does not help then repeat the above but with the Airport port.

  • My macbook doesnt not find my home network.

My macbook doesnt not find my home network. It finds the surrounding networks but not my home network. My ipod touch and iphone uses the home network and another computer in the house. My home network does not appear in the wifi drop list and when I search via network preferences it doesnt help even though i am using the correct password. Every once in a while it will find the network more thats the exception.

Turn the router and modem off then back on.
I don't have iStubmler downloaded but someone told me that it can do a better job of picking up network signals. So you might try downloading it, but I can't say that I know it will help.

hi, how do i stop my macbook pro not to automatically connect to a wifi connection that is not my preferred network? i want to automatically connect my macbook to my preferred network everytime i turn on my laptop. thank you.

System Preferences > Network > WiFi
To give a network the highest priority, drag the name of the network to the top of the list. This is the network your computer will attempt to join first.

    Hi there nina777s,
You may want to try resetting the PRAM and SMC on your Mac as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • Why does the internet on my new macbook pro not work when my old macbook's does?

Why does the internet on my new macbook pro not work when my old macbook's does? I'll have to turn the wifi off and back on multiple times to get the internet to continue to work on my Macbook Pro (running mountain lion but did it on lion also) when it runs fine on my old white Macbook (running lion). Is there something I can do to fix it or do I just have to deal with it?

Here is your fix .. I have uploaded my properly calibrated profile get it here :
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YAJL6A9X
And it should go to your user folder/Library/ColorSync/Profiles
if you have one already you can rename either one ..
and then go to system preferences - displays - color to select the profile .
you will get rid of the blue tint while keeping correct color and gamma
This is for the newer 2010 MBP's altho if same display was used might also give good results in the previous models as well . .

macbook pro not displaying music library: What do I need to do to show music files in Library? They are not showing up.

If you click View, Show Sidebar you will see the other libraries under Shared in the left hand column. Click on the Library you want and you can expand it to select Music, Movies etc. Select whatever items you want and click import if you want to move them to your Library.
You will have to have all computers authorised with the relevant Apple ID's
    Store  >  Authorise this computer...
This is separate from the Home Sharing username and password and is to allow playing of DRM Movies, TV shows etc from the other computer.
If both Computers use the same apple id this step is not required.

After latest security update my MacBook is not finding any network and I think is not really turning wifi on. Has anyone encountered similar problem?

Checked the older discussion of the same type and found solution, well kind of... Thanks to other people who tried it, I just cannot remember their names at the moment. So, the solution for me was to turn off the firewall in the system preferences and suddenly lo and behold there was my network.
