MacBook-Random Shutdowns After Update

(Note: I posted that I had solved this problem by deleting an older version of Microsoft Office, but a day later the problem resurfaced)
1st Indication of a Problem--
While using "Software Update" to upgrade from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9, the computer screen went black about 1/2 way through the "system optimization" part of the installation. I thought it had just gone to sleep since the white sleep indicator light was glowing on and off. However, I could not wake it from sleep and the only solution I found was to hold the power button down to fully stop the computer. Then, I powered on again to have the computer try to start up, and then go black during the gray screen. I repeated the process and each time it would get a little further into the startup process, but it would never finish loading.
Troubleshooting Steps Taken-
After reading about the proper troubleshooting methods, I booted from the install disks and ran "disk utility" and repaired the disk permissions as recommended, and ran the "verify disk" part of disk utility. The permissions were corrected and the disk verification process indicated the disk was ok.
I restarted the computer and everything appeared to be fine until I opened MS Word. The screen went black again.
Concerned that maybe the update never fully loaded, I downloaded the combo intel updater and tried to reinstall it. The computer screen went black at the exact same point during the "system optimization" stage.
At this point, I decided to try to boot from the installation disk again and run disk utility. However, the computer now would not boot from CD, while holding down C. However, it would perform the Hardware Test by holding down D. So, I ran the hardware test and it indicated no problems.
After restarting computer, the same black screen crash occurred while trying to use various applications. Not all would cause the crash, some crashed it, some didn't. The error was not consistent. The same program that appeared to cause the crash one time would run fine the next. Other times I would let it sit without opening a program and it would crash after a random period of time. It is important to note the fans aren't even running when this occurs, nor does the processor seem to be running fast.
Since I could not boot from the installation CD, I decided to run disk utility while logged in normally. Again, no problems found with the disk and this time no permissions were corrected.
So, I continued the troubleshooting process:
*I verified the S.M.A.R.T. status = verified.
*I checked the build number of the OS to ensure the update was complete (build = 8P2137)
*Checked the RAM in the hardware profile, both slots indicated OK
*Turned off all non-system fonts
*re-installed Java just in case
*Downloaded Cocktail and ran:
1)all cron tasks
2)cleared the caches
3)rebuilt launch services database
4)updated locate and whatis databases
*ran FSCK
*reset the PRAM
*Reset the system Management Controller (SMC)
*tried to login in verbose mode- crashed
*tried to login to safe mode- crashed
None of this worked, so when I could get the computer to stay up and running for a few minutes, I decide to delete unnecessary programs including MS Office.
Immediately after deleting Office, I stopped having problems. I could now boot from the install cd, boot into safe mode, run without crashes so to speak. That was yesterday... Everything seemed fine so I re-ran some of the cleanup processes above to be sure that things were clean.
Today, I used the computer for over two hours without problems. Then instant crash out of nowhere. Same problems above reappeared. It took several cycles to get the computer to load. I opened iTunes to see if that might be the cause since I upgraded that yesterday after the problem ceased. Sure enough the computer crashed. So, I deleted all of itunes except my music library. Still random crashes occur.
I resorted to opening my RAM slots and resitting the RAM to be sure it was secure and it was fine, no change... still crashes.
Two Important Notes:
1)I have never experienced the black screen of death before.
2)I updated the firmware shortly after I got the MacBook because I heard of the potential problems. So, the SMC is up-to-date.
At this point, I am going to schedule an appointment with the Genius Bar for Tuesday. However, I am sure they will merely jump to an "archive and install" which I can do myself if I have to or they will try to check the RAM which I already did.
Is there anything else I can possibly do to fix this myself before handing over my baby to them?

I mention this because you have done such a thorough job of troubleshooting and documenting your problem. According to the link below, the system optimization step in Apple's software installation has a bug that can delete arbitrary file(s) from your system.

  • Problems with random shutdown after replacing a swollen battery

    Hello all,
Perhaps one of you can help with this issue.
I'm using a Macbook Pro 17" mid-2007 model. A few months ago, the power disconnected from the machine when the battery had already run down and the machine did a hard shutdown. When I booted it back up there were serious problems with the display. Eventually it stopped working altogether. I took it for service and it was determined to by the NVIDIA graphics processor problem, so Apple replaced my motherboard.
When I got the machine back from servicing, there was a rattle in the right fan that gradually got worse. After a while the touchpad button stopped depressing in the center. I also experienced several random shutdowns while operating on battery power. I learned about the swelling battery issue with macbooks and ordered a replacement. By the time the replacement battery arrived my original battery was quite swollen. I'm concerned that the swelling battery may have warped the case a bit, leading to the fan noise.
I have now replaced the battery, but I'm still experiencing random shutdowns after 20+ minutes of use on battery power. I have done the RSS tests that were recommended in other forums and there doesn't seem to be any random shutdown problems when I'm plugged in -- only under battery power. My understanding is that a swelling battery can sometimes cause the battery to disengage from the electrical contacts on the MB, causing a sudden shutdown. I'm wondering why the problem is persisting now with a new battery? After one random shutdown, I tried to power up again using the battery, while pushing the battery into place at various angles, but I couldn't find any angle that would give power to the machine. The fan noise is also still present.
Can anyone offer an explanation or advise on any methods to overcome these random shutdowns? I have checked the console and the machine isn't registering any error when it shuts down, although when it restarts it says "DirectoryService[35] Improper shutdown detected"

Yep, it is video (or: or audio for video) so unless you're sure you need it (because you work or will work with the DVC Pro HD video/audio codec), you can remove the plug from its' folder and put it in your documents folder (don't trash it, I have no idea if it is necessary for non-DVC Pro HD users to have it installed too).
The WWW is littered with posts from people encountering bugs and crashreports with DVCPROHDAudio.plugin as the main suspect. Most of those posts seem to be from video people rather than audio folks.
    http://www.google.nl/search?q=DVCPROHDAudio.plugin&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=or g.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
But, if you get crashes and you see this one mentioned in the report, disable it, restart, and see if the problem's gone.

  • MacBook random shutdown w/10.6.7 update

I installed the 10.6.7 combo update this morning, and now I have a problem with random shutdowns. The problem persists even after a PRAM reset. When I run Apple Hardware Test, the short test reports no problem. The extended test...shuts down before completion (before the PRAM reset, it ran for about 18 minutes; afterward, it ran for about 90 minutes).
When I ran AHT, I did so with the system "stripped" (nothing but the MacBook), so it's not a peripheral problem.
As long as I'm active (that is, using the mouse or keyboard), it won't shut down. I did have this problem with 10.6.6, but that was related to EyeTV recording and was not a system-wide issue.

I spent a couple days off and on at the apple store. Had a brand new early 2011 macbook pro 8G I7 2.3... all the best.
It was randomly shutting down, sometimes 2-3 times a day.
After replacing everything, literally, including the entire machine, it was still doing the same thing.
Finally, a genius at the gilbet, az, apparently the genius boss, started looking at it.
The first thing he tried was turning off sharing.
    It worked instantly.
So, here's one of the major causes of the random shutdown - Sharing
If you share any directory that contains operating system information - the main disk, your user account, etc. OSX will die, usually with a Kernal panic (or several of them).
It turns out that you should only share folders that have data, never anything that has OS or App information.
I shared everything because it was easiest for me on my MS network to get to and from the machine. It was always problematic to decide what to share, or to create multiple shares on the mac and then get to them from the PC side of my network. Now that is what I must do.
As soon as sharing was turned off on my main drive and on the user accounts, the random shutdowns ceased. I haven't had any since.
Now all I have left is an issue with the mouse not responding after I close the lid and reopen it. Everything appears to work, but the mouse just won't move.

  • Macbook Random shutdown osx 10.4.7

So i've been hesitating to update since the last problem with the security update that came out in the beginning of August crashed my macbook. and the recent one with the Fan i have not updated also, but it started yesterday where i'm experiencing random shutdown of my macbook, like if i woke it up from sleep it keeps happening where it just completely shuts down no explanation. i've tried resetting power management, i believe it was option, apple, p and r. still does it.
any suggestion on what i can do? i'm beginning to really fear that i'm getting problems on my mac like a PC does.
    @my

Command-Option-P-R simply resets the PRAM. The power management reset is here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
And if you find that does not help, you don't have a plastic blocking the rear vent as this article describes:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303848
And you are taking care to manage its heat effectively:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30612
and have verified the firmware update is applied:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303880
and have no third party peripherals connected when this happens and have run the hardware test:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303605
Then I'd call AppleCare and let them know the results of the hardware test.

  • MacBook Airport Issues After Update

Hello. After performing the most recent Software Update, my wireless Airport in my MacBook has been acting erratically. I never had these problems with it before the update and I know it's not the router because other wireless notebooks don't have the problem.
ISSUE: Airport often begins scanning in the middle of an online session without any reason. It then interrupts the session causing a hang while trying to visit other web addresses. It's as if it lost signal and began scanning again. Yet, my signal is always full. Before the update, I NEVER lost signal and never experienced any interruptions. I have verified and repaired all disk permissions. I have reset the router to no avail. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have an idea what can be done?
    Thank you.

Same problem! I hope there is someone here who can help us? After updating the recent "firmware" from apple, I've been having connection issues. It's strange...I get a full signal from my airport, but when I scan to find it in Airport Utility it cannot be found. My wife has another Macbook same os, but did not update the "firmware"....guess what?...all fine with her connection to airport. So, I'd have to say it might be an update issue....you think? What can I do? God, someone help....

  • Very upset at macbook random shutdown

does anyone have a solution to the random shutdowns that i have been having on my macbook? i will be working on it and it will just shut off. i am always scared that it will go dead and i will lose what i am working on. i am pretty mad because i have really liked apple products and always felt that they were better than pc's. but to pay $1500 on the computer, printer and apple care, im a little ticked to only have it about 3 months. help me please, i really appreciate all the people who reply to these messages.

They are a world-class company with
world-class support and have earned that over many
years. They will take care of you.
I really don't know whether to laugh or cry when reading your posting. Your reply hardly reflects reality in this particular case. My MacBook broke down in the last week of August and it has not been repaired and returned yet. They aren't even able to say when it will be repaired. People with RSD are being turned away at present, as the repair centers actually don't have the spare parts from Apple. This is not world-class in any way - it's a case of bad management, bad planning and bad logistics. I don't blame the poor person at the AppleCare doing the repair. However, persons higher up in the organisation have failed miserably and let down customers, company and colleagues!

  • MacBook Pro issues after updating to iOS8

After updating to iOS8 I ran into some strange issues (listed below) for the first time ever. Some of them I noticed the next day, others a couple of days later...
    - all my contacts disappeared in "contacts"
    - all my contacts disappeared in "Skype"
    - my background picture disappeared
    - all my folders in the launchpad were unpacked and all the summarized apps were scattered all over the launchpad.
All those things happened while the computer was in sleep mode, not turned off and didn't return to normal after restarts.
I got everything restored/reorganized but keep wondering if somebody else experienced something similar.
    Thanks for your help.

Well, if your Contacts have disappeared, then under System Preferences, click on iCloud and make sure you are signed into iCloud. If you are not, sign in. If you are, sign out and then back in to see if that restores your contacts.
I take it you have already restarted your Mac? If not, do that as well.
    Best of luck,

  • Random shutdowns after 2.2 update

Ever since the 2.2 update I have had random shut downs of my X. I will pick the phone up, try and turn the screen on and realise it is off. I have to pull the battery before it will even boot back up.
    Is this a common issue?

Just thought I'd post my 2 cents here on this topic. I have had my X for a month now ... Love it.  I've had like 2 or 3 on-its-own reboots.  The only thing I can put my finger on is it has to do with when I have GPS turned on and doing "location/place" type of information gathering. I installed an app over the weekend (My Location Widget) so that I cold post my location for friends at a fair I attended. I also had the FaceBook "places" thing active ... I had Twitter up and live, all this GPS stuff going in the background, etc. and in the middle of the street fair it rebooted.  So I'm not sure, but it SEEMS like either GPS type of activity caused it; or just maybe I was running way too much applications for it to handle.  (I do NOT run ATK.)
Anyway, there just seems to be some limits with how much and WHAT can run on this device...  Otherwise it's been rock steady and it stays up all day long until I shut it down at bedtime.   YMMV.

Ok , probably sounds like a good idea from the sound of it.
Are you ok with doing that?
But before you do have you reset the Pram, you can do this by holding down the command option P R keys down when restarting the macbook and if done correctly the macbook will chime as normal but keep those keys held down for 3 chimes in total, then release them and the macbook will fire up as usual.
Try that first and post back after and tell me how its running.( be aware though that this will reset your settings to the default ones)

  • MBPr random shutdowns after display/mobo replacement

I don't expect to receive help here for this issue. I'd just like to share what extreme problems I have with my 15" MBPr Late 2013 bought in early 2014. It's a 2.6 Core I7 with 16GB RAM and the 1TB SSD, to be precise.
From the start I've had random wake-from-sleep-issues that I couldn't track down. I learned to live with it, blaming it on carrying over older installations from Mac to Mac.
Around February, my display started to dissolve from the edges. So I asked my dealer what I should do. He told me to hand in the machine to our local Mac repair service (Apple authorized). Service had a cost free replacement of the display and the mainboard for me (some connection was dead and Apple replaced it). They showed me that the system was running fine at their offices for a couple of hours.
Coming home, I started to use the computer as usually – and it would shut down completeley randomly; during startup, during light usage. Rather when being on WiFi and battery than while being connected to Ethernet networking and on power. There is no warning whatsoever.
Since I still suspected, that the problem may partly be connected to my vintage base installation, I decided to install Yosemite on an external drive, boot from that, and wipe out the MBPr SSD for good. I did a zeroing of the entire SSD and started a clean install of Yosemite on the MBPr. Up to the first reboot from the internal SSD everything looked fine. But the initial boot wouldn't work. The fans came on and after about ten minutes the machine turned itself of. I turned it on again and it would show the same behavior two times and finally boot to the installation wizard.
Then I created an admin account, opened the updates panel – and the machine turned off again. This is what happens every single time now – on a fresh, empty machine.
I am writing this on this very machine while being safe booted. At the moment, this is the only way to have the MBPr usable. On monday, I'll take the machine back to service.

Hardware test states “no problems found”.
    Etrecheck (booted in safe mode):
    Problem description:
MBPr shuts down after a couple of seconds if booted normally. Does not, if booted in safe mode.

  • G4 MacMini won't sleep or shutdown after update to 10.4.8

Since updating using software update to 10.4.8 on the logout screen I mostly used the "Sleep" option after logging out from my account. To begin with things seemed fine, but now, it won't go to sleep. If I click on the button to sleep the computer, the controls get greyed out for about 30 seconds to a minute, then return to their normal state - but the computer does not enter sleep mode.
Shutdown doesn't work either! I had to hold the power switch on the back down for a few seconds to force it to switch off. Interestingly, the internet connection light on the router was flashing irregularly while I was waiting for it to switch off.
I have reset the permissions (only after the install, not before), reset the PRAM, and searched the system preferences to see if something is glaringly obvious as being wrong but have found nothing and no have no further clue what I can do...
Is it related to my not wanting iTunes to provide Album Artwork at all? For some time, every time I opened iTunes it demanded I update my Album Artwork, but I don't want to and don't have an iTunes account. I had put off downloading both 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0 for almost a week - until software update failed to provide a Cancel button for me to refuse again!
How can I get sleep and shutdown to work properly?
MacMini, PowerBook, PowerMac G5 DC   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Mac OS X Server 10.4.8

    Problem Solved!
I copied the combo update over the existing system but this alone changed nothing. Because I was unsure of which of my seemingly many OS X disks to load I rang Applecare (thank God I signed up for the three years of extra phone support - a real bargain) and they suggested I do a PMU reset - after which everything worked fine - so far.
They warned me about not doing a PMU reset very often (I guess the PMU can only stand a certain number of these events before breaking). In order to do one follow these steps:
    1) Switch off computer;
    2) Unplug ALL leads and power cables to the computer;
    3) Wait ten seconds;
    4) Simultaneously hold the power on button down while plugging the power cable in to your Mac;
    5) Connect your other cables.
    6) Switch on and go.
For me, this fixed all my other problems - Sleep, Restart, Shutdown, Printing, iSight, Internet connection speed, Quick Time performance, and so far I haven't seen anything else wrong to fix. Hopefully there won't be anything else to fix!
If anything does go wrong after this, I will do the Archive and Install, which was the next suggestion from Apple which I did not need to do. So far.
Thanks to all those who gave suggestions, I appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    Mac

  • Macbook Boot Freeze after update 10.6.8

I have a macbook pro A1226 Late 2007 running OSX 10.6.4 it runs this just fine however when i update to 10.6.8 or install lion it will not boot up. Just a grey screen spinwheel then freeze with different colors. It works fine when i plug in external monitor. I just dont understand how it works perfectly fine on 10.6.4 but will not update. Any thoughts?

    Try this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Now use Software Update to get all other updates for Snow Leopard.
