Macbook randomly freezes

Quite recently, my macbook has suddenly frozen 3 separate times for no apparent reason. I had the following applications open: Microsoft Word, Excel, Safari, MSN messenger , itunes, preview, dropbox, quicksilver, caffiene, google notifier. At first, I was still able to switch applications and force quit the laggy applications. Eventually, I kept getting the pinwheel symbol and was unable to click anything or switch applications. Mouse and keyboard became unresponsive and the only way to fix is to push the physical shut down button. Also, I noticed that the fan has been running more loudly than usual, although at the time of freezing, it seemed to be running normally.
This has not happened before and historically, I did not have any problems running this same set of applications simultaneously. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Make sure that MSN Messenger, DropBox, QuickSilver, Caffeine, and Google notifier are all versions known to work with 10.5.8. These smaller applications all do things in the background more than Word or Excel, and could make an overall lag on your system because of their background tasks. If they aren't optimized for your system that could be a double whammy. Furthermore, backup your data*:

And we can isolate further possible causes for freezes.

  • Macbook Random Freezes

    Hi,
My MacBook has recently started freezing, the system completely locks up I can't move the mouse pointer and the GUI animations all stop. The only way to get back up and running is a hard reset. The odd thing is there is nothing written to the system log, no kernel panic or other errors - nothing at all. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to the crashes and they occur roughly once every week. I've run memtest for 24 hours with no reported errors and I never had a crash when doing CPU or graphics intensive calculations. I've tried a SMC and PRAM reset and a complete reinstall. I think these problems have started occurring since I upgraded to 10.5.2 although I may have had one with a 10.5.1 install. Is any one else experiencing this type of crash? The reason I ask is I've recently had the bottom case replaced on my laptop and I'm wondering if the repair shop may have damaged something.
    Best Regards, Simon

    Hey Simon,
Did you ever resolve this issue? The past two days I have been experiencing the exact same problems. My computer will either randomly freeze and I can't do anything but a hard reset, or once in awhile I'll get a gray screen error message. I haven't installed any new hardware/software in the last couple of months so I'm really not sure what could be the cause of this. I'm hoping to be able to solve this issue on my own, but it looks like I may have to bring my computer in. Thanks.

  • MacBook randomly freezes on program startup, then dies.

Well, sort of dies. Here's what happens. Sometimes when I'll start up a program, the computer will freeze, or in essence lag VERY badly. Everything has about a twenty second delay, I can't do anything, and I end up having to force shut down. Force quit and any key combinations don't seem to have any effect. I tried repairing permissions and other maintenance, and now the only option left is to try to reinstall the OS, losing all my programs and such, and pray that it works.
Is there anything I can try before that? If it's a hardware failure I'm dead. xD I have no money, and my extended warranty is completely out. Please tell me there's something I can try, or if there are any other details I can give.
    Thanks.

Reinstalling the OS does not lose all your programs and such. You can erase the hard drive and then reinstall but that is not at all necessary.
    Two things you can do...
    1. Log in as another User (create a new User in System Preferences/Accounts if need be).
    2. Perform an "Archive & Install" with your install DVD.
Neither one of these 2 options will do anything to harm your existing apps and documents. Remember, you are not in windose land anymore.
And for the future well being of your computing experience, get an external hard drive and do routine backups (clone the drive) if you have not already done so. It will be the best $100 you have ever spent on your computer.

  • My macbook pro late 2008 randomly freeze

Hi I recently upgrade my macbook pro Late 2008 by adding a 250 go Crucial SSD drive in the main harddrive spot. I also put a 1 To HDD in the place of the super drive.
Since then, my macbook randomly freeze. I can't see any link to any specific usage. It just happen for no reasons. I had to reboot by holding the power button.
    Thanks for your help!

Hi r.w.p & welcome to the forums...
Some or all of the following may be necessary - try in this order:
    1. Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US ). If everything isn't fixed, then continue to follow the steps here including resetting your SMC ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 ) if necessary.
    2. Use Font Book to eliminate all bad and duplicate fonts.
    3. Reinstall (or install for the first time) the .6.1 and .6.2 updates by downloading and installing the combo updater ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
    4. Reinstall 10.6 using your Snow Leopard install DVD by installing Snow over Snow using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to re-install the.6.1 & .6.2 updates - if you do, then use the combo updater again ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
Still no joy, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.

  • Mid 2009 13.3" Macbook Pro random freezing issue

    Hi all,
I had a 2009 13.3" Unibody Macbook and last week purchased a 13.3" Macbook Pro. I had installed 4GB of RAM in the MB myself, and it had worked fine for the month I owned it.
I backed up my MB with an external USB hard drive using Time machine, restored from this backup on my MBP and moved the 4GB RAM over.
When using the MBP I get random freezes lasting between 1 and 3 seconds, occuring every 5 to 30 minutes.
Could someone please advise a good way to diagnose this problem further? I am guessing it is not the RAM as it worked fine whilst in the MB.

    I have an update!
I made an appointment with a local Apple Genius Bar and talked to a technian. He said it was neither the RAM nor the Hard Drive at fault.
His only thoughts were that a software issue was the root cause. I have been doing some serious investigating this morning and figured it out. Viewing system.log in Console shows:
SMS::infiniteIntTimerEventHandler ERROR: we have infinite interrupts, disabling
At exactly 5 minute intervals. These correlate with the freezes (to the second).
SMS refers to the Apple Sudden Motion Sensor. I disabled this by doing "sudo pmset -a sms 0" in Terminal, rebooted and everything is fine.
I have no idea why the SMS thinks the Macbook is falling every 5 minutes, but when it occures the hard drive heads are locked down to prevent damage, which is a perfect reason as to why iTunes would crash but Spotify (streaming internet music) does not.
    Problem solved!
    Edit:
In reply to some questions posted by other members (thank you by the way).
I did install EFI 1.7 update. I did not use the Migration assistance. At some point I will do a fresh install then pick and choose parts from a backup rather than using a full Time Machine Restore. This could still have been the root cause of the issue, but it is hard to tell.
    Thanks guys!

  • Macbook Pro random freezing

Hi, I am experiencing random freezing of OSX, First I thought it was related to the latest flash, so I deleted it but the freezing keeps happening. Then I thought it was firefox so I switched to safari 5 but still it freezes.
Now the computer freezes randomly, some times while on the internet, some times while using mail.app, some times just sitting in the finder.
It freezes also every time I try to sync photos to my 3GS in itunes.
It also freezes after Steam is open for a while.
    It is a unibody Macbook Pro, 17 inch, early 2009, 2.8 GHz Intel core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.OSX 10.6.4
If anyone has any ideas how to solve this it'll be much appreciated.

I upgraded my MBP 2009 Unibody from the original 250GB HD to a 500GB 7200rpm HD, only to experience the dreaded freezing. Freezes randomly and shows the Beachball for about 30-60 seconds. So, I put my old drive in for a while. Then later, (about3 months), I got another 500GB 7200rpm drive. Installed it, and same problem. So I put it back like it was after having to delete a bunch of stuff to get it below 250GB so I could continue to use it. Later got a 3rd 500GB 7200RPM Drive and SAME PROBLEM! So, I put a 320GB 7200RPM drive and it ALSO has the same problem.
However, each time I did this, I used Disk Utility to copy the data using the Restore command to the new drive. While connected via USB, the drives all worked great. Put them INSIDE the MBP and they give this problem randomly.
I'm really getting sick of it.
Then on August 19, a "fix" was released as a firmware update. I just found this tonight and when I ran it, I was told "This computer does not need this update." So, I guess it's only for APPLE BRANDED Drives, not my other drives. I've tried Fujitsu, Western Digital, and Hitachi drives and they all give the same problems.
Anyone know what I can do to fix this?

  • Macbook Air 2011 11" - random freezes.  Roaming wifi causing it?

I have MacBook Air 11" Mid-2011 (4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, i5).  Ever since getting the machine I've experienced random freezes - spinning beachball, screen becomes unresponsive, holding the power button to force it to close being the only thing I can do.  The console logs don't show anything that indicates a problem. They just stop logging anything until I restart.  I took it to an Apple store Genius while still under warranty and they kept it in for a few days and ran a suite of tests and found nothing.
The problem was completely random and unreproducable.  Sometimes it would happen a few times in a row, then nothing for weeks. Also, it was only happening when I was staying in a particular hotel during the week for work.  It was Hilton hotel with the wifi being provided by BT Openzone.  It would only happen there, never at home, family members house, Starbucks (which also use BT Openzone here in the UK, airports).
I recently made some changes to my home wifi setup and the problem has reappeared, but this time at home.  Where previously I just had an Airport Extreme, I have now extended the network over ethernet powerline to a second wifi access point.  The second wifi access point has the same SSID as the main network.
All my wireless devices should seamlessly switch between access points as I move them around the house.  Our iPhones, iPads and Dell laptop seem to have no problem doing this.  When I move away from one access point, once the signal strength drops to certain point, the device connects to the second access point.  The MacBook Air also does this, but it seems to freeze if I am in an area where the signals are overlapping.  This also describes the situation in the hotel.  The BT Openzone hotspots were spread across the hotel.  If my room was in an area where the signals from access points were overlapping I would be more likely to experience the freeze.
If I look in the Wifi logs I can see messages stating that some sort of threshold has been reached and the wifi is starting roaming.  These messages are always present at the time of the freezes.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Is it something Apple would fix eventhough I'm now out of warranty?  If it could be a hardware problem, would replacing the wifi card myself help?
    cheers.

If it could be a hardware problem, would replacing the wifi card myself help?
    cheers.

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro freezes randomly (spinning wheel of death)

I just got a macbook pro refresh and the thing randomly freezes without warning. Once it's locked up the wheel just spins, I can't access Activity Monitor, can't do anything. I think it's a pretty good computer but, aside from freezing and basically totally breaking randomly. What's up with this? Do the people at Mac not test equipment before selling it to their users. If you google "mac freezes" you get tons of hits, but none of them seem to have the solution. Any help? Thanks!

  • Random freezing on a Macbook Air?

    Hello,
I am encountering random freezing on my Macbook Air, that has started in the last few weeks.
    - Applications will suddenly crash at random points
    - Sometimes Lion will pop a translucent grey screen asking me to hold down a power button.
    - I can no longer relilably install software updates, it often crashes or reports the download corrupted. Sometimes I succeed after 3 or 4 attempts.
    - To try and verify it wasn't malware, I checked with Kapersky AV for Mac (it claims it is clean), and I also manually checked for Flashback (I'm not affected)
    - Web browser frequently randomly crash, and I can't run anything that involves 3D graphics
    - it still happens even if I disable startup apps
    - Sometimes I get the forever beachball and the top bar becomes corrupt or blank
    - There is no pattern to this, except some apps seem to crash more often than others
It feels like a "hardware" issue, due to its intermittency/unpredictability/non-repeatability.
I am wondering if either my RAM or CPU is defective?  Or is this something software?
It is a 2010 Macbook Air 11.6", a little more than a year old.   What are my recourse that would result in minimum wasted time:
Sometimes it goes for an hour with no problems (I can even run 3D) and might not be able to demonstrate in front of Apple.
Unfortunately, I did not have the foresight to get AppleCare, so I'll have to expend some time and/or money.
    What is least painful?
I first backup my personal files (mostly done, as it's mostly on various cloud services)
    1. Assume it's software: Attempt to reinstall OSX, cross fingers it doesn't happen again?    Run a few overnight 3D benchmark tests to 'burn it in' and verify it is not a hardware problem?
    2. or Purchase a new Macbook Air & then bring the old Air in, then resell the Air after it's repaired?  (Minimum downtime method, high cost method)
    3. or Apple Store & try to get it repaired/serviced.   (Lower cost method)
    4. or trade it in for a discounted refurbished 2011 Air?   (If the Apple Store does this sort of stuff)
    Thanks,
    Mark Rejhon

I am able to drag photos from iPhoto to Contacts on my MacBook Air. I resize the iPhoto window to make it smaller, open Contacts, select the Contact in question and click the Edit button at the lower right of the contact. I then drag the photo from iPhoto.
The step that I'm guessing that you might be missing is clicking the Edit button at the lower right of the contact.

  • Macbook Pro randomly freezes time to time

    Nurul N,
you can find out what resetting the SMC would do by following the link and reading what’s there.
Which tech guy did that? Did it come from the factory with 8 GB of RAM installed, or was it upgraded to have 8 GB of RAM after you purchased it? If the latter was the case, then the possibility exists that the freezing up is due to a fault in the currently installed RAM.

  • Macbook early 2009 Random Freezes

Ok this is a long history. I have a macbook white early 2009. At the time that Snow Leopard came out i led my macbook to an Apple Store for the upgrade, after a couple of weeks the macbook starts to freezes randomly no matter what, just listening music in iTunes or surfing the web on Safari, even without any application open. When it freezes, the mouse doesn't move, then the rainbow wheel appears, and nothing can be clicked and force-quit doesn't work (have to do a hard shut down). My HD also makes the noise that does when you open a new application but louder and the noise keeps until i do the hard shut down. The freeze grew until i was no longer available to log in so i cant get access to the OS. I led the mac once again to the Apple Store where they told that the problem was only an error on the HD and a clean install of Snow Leopard will solve the problem (but i'm going to lost all my information) i say do it. The gave me my macbook the same day and at night when i was upgrading the OS the freezes came back. Since then i have done alot of things, repair permissions, format the HD. I have pefomed and fsck of the HD and everythings looks ok.
S.M.A.R.T. status is ok (verified) and I also did an Apple Hardware Test and it said no trouble was found. So then i decided to go back to Leopard but the problem continued until i use the option of "Save and Install" from the DVD of Leopard. the freeze never occur from then until nowdays and i'm in leopard. I tried to solve the problem by upgrading to Snow Leopard yesterday but the macbook just freeze up again two times.
Since my HD does a loudy noise when the macbook freeze up i'm guessing that is the HD the one responsable for this problem. Anyone can help me with this?

There's been discussion on the question of to-Lion or not-to-Lion. Snow Leopard is stable at this point and runs well for most. Lion is pretty stable, but some still have issues (it's working fine for me).
You could do like I did and install Lion on a separate hard drive or a separate disk partition, and have a dual boot system. That way you could evaluate Lion while having Snow Leopard to fall back on.
A big change with Lion is that it no longer supports running PowerPC code. So if your program needs depend on programs that run under the Rosetta emulator, a pure Lion system may not be the answer. However, a dual boot system would cover that (I have a dual boot setup).
If you want to use Lion, you should have 4GB or more of memory. Lion requirements are 2GB however a number of people haven't been satisfied with it's performance, which was fixed by going to 4GB.

  • 10.6 definitely won't stop random freezing on my MacBook 13"

    Hello.
I have a MacBook white I bought two years ago.
When I bought it it already came with 10.5 installed.
A couple months after I bought it I upgraded its RAM from the original 1G to 4G, as well as changed its harddrive from the original 120G to a Seagate 500G.
Nothing stopped working, in fact I thought I had (or still have, hopefully) a very nice machine.
When apple released Snow Leopard I felt tempted to upgrade after looking through the neat new features. I went to the store and bought my copy of Snow Leopard and made an upgrade of my machine.
This is when I started experiencing ****!
From the moment I upgraded to 10.6 my once steady and consistent mac started random freezing and showing me that extremely obnoxious beach ball (a.k.a. beach ball of death).
From September 2009 (when I made the upgrade) until last month (March 2010) I kept trying and digging for solutions to this issue. I tried literally everything I could find in the forums, both apple discussion forums and other mac related forums. From resetting the SMC to doing a fresh 10.6 installation (yes, from scratch).
I'm very unfortunate to say that nothing, nothing worked. The random freezing kept happening on 10.6.
This was when I decided getting back to 10.5.
I even did a full RAM test using memtest (I left it running for a whole day on single user mode) and all tests passed.
10.5 is working nicely so far, I have been testing it full load for a couple of days and no freezes so far.
Now here's my question: why in the world 10.6 won't work for me? I really want it but I can't afford having a Vista like OS in my mac.
Anybody has any clues? Any probing suggestion I might have missed?
    Thanks a lot!

Well, I only got to read your reply after exchanging the hard drives.
In any case I got 10.6 freezing with the old HD as well, which is sad!
Regarding the RAM I bought, I got it from a local electronics store and it is supposed to be a kingston module. I never verified the modules in the Kingston website though.
I'll get them off and try to verify the authenticity of the modules with Kingston, and will give a try with the old memory modules.
From the top of my head I can't figure what kind of incompatibility can there be with a working module that has the exact specifications of the macbook I own. In any case, it is worth the check.

  • Since upgrading to Lion my MacBook Pro freezes randomly

Since I upgraded my MacBook Pro (shipped last October) to Lion, it randomly freezes.
It lasts roughly 4-5 minutes where I cannot do anything. The only running apps are Google Chrome, Skype and Twitter. All are a their latest version.
Anyone having the same issue ? Any hint ?

    Try these
    Reset SMC
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    PRAM/NVRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Hardware Test
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Then backup your files to a external drive and disconnect.
Reboot holding command + r keys and enter the Recovery Partition and see if you can reinstall 10.7 over the installed version.
You might have some third party program incompatibility issue if this doesn't resolve it.

  • My MacBook Pro randomly freezing ever since new logic board?

My mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13" keeps ok randomly freezing ever since I've had a new logic board fitted after my macbook needed a new one (it was fixed through stormfront which is an official apple retailer). It will just freeze, won't be able to move the mouse or anything, and sometimes when I turn it off by holding down the power button, I can most of the time hear a click, but not everytime. Sometimes it freezes when starting up, sometimes it lasts a while before freezing, but recently it's been more like every 5-10 minutes. Can anyone help me as to why this is happening and what the problem may be? I'm running OS X Mavericks. Thankyou.
