MacBook randomly shuts off and won't charge

I have a 13 inch MacBook that's less than a year old. For the past several weeks I've been having a problem with the computer randomly shutting down. It usually does this even though it's running on A/C power.
When it happens, the computer shuts off and the charger no longer works (ie no light). The computer will turn right back on if I push the button, but I have to unplug and re-plug the charger several times before I can get the light to come back on. Also, after the computer is turned back on, my date/time settings are always wrong, and my computer doesn't automatically remember my wireless network. Any help would be great.

Hi, I'm having the same problem stated. My Macbook is a late 2008 model and has started doing this. Here are my stats.

  • My macbook randomly shut off and won't stay on?

I was watching Netflix and had a few tabs open on my 2011 MacBook Pro. It randomly shut off and it wouldn't turn back on. I reset the smc and the computer would start up, but it wouldn't stay on for more than 20 seconds. The battery is fully charged up. Does anyone have any idea what happened or how to fix it? Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro shut off and won't turn on or charge?

I purchased my Macbook Pro August 1st 2012 at Best Buy and in April it shut off for no reason and it wouldn't charge. Apple replaced the battery cable and my Macbook worked for a couple of weeks, then in May same thing happened and Apple replaced the MLB, a couple days later the same thing happens and Apple replaces the Magsafe board with cable. Then a few days later specific keys on the keyboard stop working and Apple replaces the topcase with keyboard. Now 120 days later my Macbook Pro shuts off and won't charge for the 4th time. My Macbook is now out of warranty but I don't think I should pay since this is the 4th time my MacBook Pro shuts off for no reason and won't charge. Yes I already tried reseting the smc, still didn't work. What could be causing this and is there anyway Apple will cover this since is the 4th time it shuts off for no reason?

Call Apple Customer relation and explain your situation. Have your receipts for the work that was already preformed on it and ask them to replace it with a new unit.

  • My iphone 5 keeps randomly shutting off and won't turn back on unless I plug it in to the charger

my iphone 5 keeps randomly shutting off and won't turn back on unless I plug it in to the charger

I'm experiencing the same issue. It's one thing to have to re-power up but to not be able to do so without plugging in the charger when the battery is substantially full, is a real drag.

  • Macbook air randomly shuts off and won't turn back on

I have a 2011 Macbook Air that was given to me by my sister. She told me about a year ago she spilled water on the keyboard and it stopped working for a while. She took it to apple and they told her it was going to cost 700 dollars to replace so she decided not to. After a while the laptop randomly turned back on and started working fine. I ended up getting it as a free gift and it was working perfectly fine for about a month and a half until recently it randomly shut off on me. After it shuts off, it wouldn't turn back on through pressing the power button I left it alone and after a day it randomly turned back on and worked like normal. After about 15 minutes of use it randomly shuts down and won't turn back on. I tried resetting SMC to no avail. It randomly turns on for about 15 minutes before it feels like it gets slightly hot and shuts off. Any help will be great!

  • My 13inch MacBook Pro randomly shut off and won't turn on

My 13 inch MacBook Pro will not turn on at all. It randomly shut off while I was using it and now it won't come back on. The light on the charger is faintly blinking... But it is no longer charging. I tried a different outlet, and a different MacBook charger... Nothing. The screen is completely black and none of buttons or keys are responsive. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but it seems that it shut off not even one second after I connected my iPhone to it via USB. I guess I should include that this was the first time my iPhone was connected to my MacBook since upgrading to ios 6.0. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you..

    jc1122,
by “boot” I mean “use as the disk from which OS X will be run”. At the moment, all that is known is that your computer won’t start from its internal hard disk; my suggestion is to see whether it is able to start from your grey Mac OS X Install DVD, which is bootable (i.e. able to be used a disk from which OS X can be run).

  • Iphone 5 randomly shut off and won't come back on

For the last few weeks my iphone 5 has been randomly shutting off. Usually when this happens I just hold down the power and home buttons and my phone reboots within a few seconds. However last night my phone shut off and will not turn back on no matter what I try. It doesn't respond at all when I plug it into the charger and the screen has been completely black the whole time. When I plug it into my computer Itunes starts up and a message pops up saying that Itunes has detected a phone in recovery mode and I must restore it before it can be used with Itunes. I tried to restore my phone earlier, but it got stuck on 'waiting for itunes' and my phone displayed the apple logo and status bar that would not load at all. My phone is now back to being completely black and unresponsive. PLEASE HELP this phone isn't even 6 months old. I am on vacation currently and really need to get my phone working as soon as possible. Thanks!

I followed the steps found here: Error 4005 fix for Windows 7
it actually brought my phone to life .. sort of .. I now actually see an Apple logo on the iPhone screen (before this it was just a black screen at all times, no matter what) and it has a progress bar under it. Only thing is nothing happens after this. It's just stationary.
My iTunes just says Waiting for iPhone while my iPhone is just stuck with an Apple logo and a loading bar below that doesn't progress.
Edit: After doing some Googling it seems like I have the exact same issue as this person https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6431899

  • MacBook randomly shut down, and won't turn back on

First of all, hello. Secondly, I've got a problem with my MacBook: about half an hour ago, it randomly shut down and when I tried to turn it back on, it didn't. Instead, the backlight kept flickering at the tempo that something inside the computer was "clicking", and the longer I held the power button, the more "clicks" there were. Needless to say, I've tried charging the battery, resetting the SMC, and to no avail: I still can't power it up, even when I don't use my battery. Whether I use it or not, the MacBook still "clicks" during my pressing of the power button and stops "clicking" when I release it. My MacBook is a year old. Can someone help me out here?

Me too. Any resolution? I don't want to take it to my local apple place because they're retards, but according to the info on my warranty that's the only place available. Can't believe they don't have an RMA service direct to Cupertino, what a joke.

  • Iphone randomly shut off and won't turn back on!

My power button has been stuck recently (not a major issue) and my Iphone 4S randomly shut off without any damage or moisture and over half battery life. Plugging it in to the computer or wall doesn't turn it back on.
I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

This is very bad. It is very difficult to deal with problems without power button function. If there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation or set up service and take or send to Apple for resolution. If no coverage, clean iPhone charging port very well with toothbrush and Isopropyl Alcohol. If still nothing, next would be battery replacement. If still nothing, replacement of the charging port with flex cable and lower mic. And on and on. If you want Apple to handle this, they offer perfect replacement iPhone 4S for $199.

  • IMac starts running slow, randomly shuts off, and won't turn back on!

Last night, I was watching some YouTube videos about Swift programming and playing around on Xcode when my iMac (specs below) started to freeze between switching apps, creating files, and running my Xcode project. I tried cleaning it up using both CCleaner and OnyX. Neither of them helped. Today, I was about to run OnyX to see if it could do anything more and my iMac just shuts off. I change the outlet, still doesn't work. Go to another room and try that outlet, still doesn't work. It just sits there when I press the power button and does nothing. No sound, no startup, or anything.
    • I verified my hard-drive with Disk Utility before it shut off and it said it was OK.
    • I repaired permissions
    • I used OnyX's verification tool to verify the hard-drive a couple different ways, every way came back clear.
    iMac Specs
    Software OS X 10.10.3
    21.5-inch, Mid 2011
Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
    1 TB SATA Disk
Also there was a storm while we were gone a couple days ago, maybe a surge or something? I'm not an expert so I wouldn't know. My brother's iMac (the one I'm posting this on) works fine though.

  • MacBook Pro shuts down and won't charge, battery light on the side is off completely?

    Hey guys,
So about 20 minutes ago, I walked over to my macbook pro ('17) to plug in my phone charger. The top was already open, so I didn't have to pull it up. I clicked the touchpad to turn it on, and it turned on for literally half a second, and turned black with a bit of a static noise I believe. As if it blew a fuse.
So I look on the side of the computer where you can press that little button and a bunch of lights will turn on according to battery life, and nothing. Not one light turned on. I got this computer fixed a month ago with a replaced battery, screen, graphics card I believe, and operating system.
What happened?? It won't charge or turn on. Is there any chance I can revive this or is it toast?

Hi, I am having the same exact problem! Anyone who know what to do?

  • My iPhone 4 randomly shut off and won't turn back on.

I got a text message, so I tried swiping the screen to enter my passcode and my iPhone randomly went black. The Apple logo did not appear and the battery was not low at all. My lock button is broken, so I tried hitting the Home button and nothing happened. I plugged it into the charger and nothing happened. I tried my sound dock with similar results. I plugged it into my laptop, and my laptop recognizes it, but my phone stays dark. I've tried holding down the Home button and have tried several times unplugging my phone and trying it in the charger and my laptop. Someone please help me!!

  • After upgrading to mavericks my mac shut off and won't come back on

I upgraded to Mavericks and my 2013 macbook pro shut off and won't come back on.  When I push the start button I can hear the chime and then my sleep light blinks really fast and then shuts off completely.  All I get is a white screen with the loading circle just going around and around.  I tried resetting the pram but that didn't work.  Any ideas?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Alternatively, see:
Reinstall OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Choose the version you have installed now:
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
