MacBook repeatedly freezes. Fan regularly whirs. Won't go to sleep!

I recently decided to give my iMac some company by purchasing a new MacBook. It arrived and all was well. Then after a couple of days, it froze. I thought nothing of it, held the power button down, switched it back on and carried on without a second thought. However, a few weeks on and it's just gotten worse. It may be since the 10.5.1 update, it may not, but since then it has frozen 4 times, on silly things too, like for example, I told it to shutdown, and nothing happened other than me receiving a message saying logout failed because Activity Monitor failed to close! So i forced it to close and then clicked shutdown again. Everything started to disappear as normal, but the dock remained...My MacBook just sat there like it...After 10 minutes i realised that it was not going to shut down.
Secondly, a common problem i've noticed, but my fan is regularly loud and "whirs". I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC but nothing has helped.
Thirdly, the very latest issue, whenever I close my lid, it refuses to sleep. I read a post on these forums about the magnet being gone, however, this is so new that if that is the case then I will burn everything I own of Apple's. Annoyingly, when the lid is shut, you'd think it was asleep because the led glows and fades.
Anyone having similar problems or know any possible solutions?

Hrm, used restore discs and now it seems to be ok. However, when i close the lid it sleeps (or seems to), when i lift the lid up again it's a black screen, i hear the machine working and then my desktop is displayed. Which would seem fine, however, in my security tab in preferences, I have selected the option to be prompted for my password to regain access...Yet I am not...I have to enter the password when i restart etc, but not when it wakes, even though the option is set. Anyone had similar or know of a way to fix this?

• Macbook Pro takes forever to boot, won't wake from sleep

Hey guys, I've done a lot of searching and troubleshooting and haven't been able to find anything that really fixes this problem. Essentially, my Macbook Pro (~2008) is taking forever (10ish minutes) to load. It hangs for a while on both the grey apple screen as well as on the blue screen before login. I just did a clean install of OSX Leopard and have been hesistant to upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion again until I fix this problem. I have a backup of all data.
Below is my recent boot log. Thanks so much for your help!

How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Check for Login Items
Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps you have listed there.
And go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash
If there's enough disk space and login items aren't an issue, launch Disk Utility. The startup disk may need repairing.
Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Select: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions).
If the disk needs repairing >

• MacBook Air freezing upon wake from sleep

Hello there! Ever since installing Mavericks, my MacBook Air freezes nearly every time I wake it from sleep. Whever I open the lid, it allows me to enter my password, and then it freezes. Other times, it will let me log in, and then whenever I try to use Safari or another application it freezes. It doesn't completely freeze, I get the beachball and everything. What is going on?

Hello there AustinJGibson,
It sounds like you are having performance issues with Mavericks.
It sounds like you are seeing some performance issues after having installed Mac OS X 10.9.
I want to recommend the troubleshooting information from this article named:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.
An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the app to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.Find the manual for your Mac
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
Next I would perform a Safe Boot:

• Won't restart after sleep

This is a common if infrequent issue, but my new MacBook Air running 10.9.2 won't restart after sleep. I've connected it to a Thunderbolt display, and after sleep all I get is a finger pointer on the display and nothing else. Only shutting down and restarting works.
I've seen this issue in other posts, but it's never affected me until I replaced my previous MacBook Air with a new one.
Has anyone got a resolution? It's very annoying with applications and files open on crashing.

Hello Slinky09,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information, take a look at:
OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5357
If your Mac doesn't sleep or wake as expected, review the steps in this article.
Reset SMC
Reset NVRAM/PRAM
Test with external devices disconnected
Try Safe Mode
Try another user account
Have a nice day,
Mario

• When I turn on a video the screen on my MacBook Pro freezes. I've been through Apple Care and they couldn't fix the computer. I think the fan and the graphics are the problems

When I turn on a video the screen on my MacBook Pro freezes. I've been through Apple Care and they couldn't fix the computer. I think the fan and the graphics are the problems. I can restart after two attempts. Sometimes I use SAFEBOOT

Please advise the model MBP you have and the OSX you have installed.
Also try a SMC reset:

• G5 tower: whirring fan, black out, won't woke up

My DP 2.0 G5 tower is showing such symptoms again, the second time in this month. Never had that before.
It's located in my office. It worked well in the day time, but when I came back the next morning, the fans were whirring at maximum speed, the screen was black, and the keyboard and mouse were non-responsive. I had to press the power button until it shut down and then reboot it. It was then back to normal again.
Is it dying?

The fans roaring are normal safety feature when no OS takes over control of the fans, that said no use leaving it like that, but not dangerous.
So, holding alt or option key at bootup shows no boot volumes?
Long shot, but...

• Macbook Pro 13" won't wake from sleep

Have mid 2009 Macbook Pro 13" that repeatedly won't wake from sleep. Either putting to sleep via lid closure or sleep command, seems to enter sleep OK. Sleep light slowly flashes indicating sleep. When I open lid, light goes out but screen doesn't come on. I have hold power button down to force it off and reboot. Very annoying. Occasionally, the laptop is warm and you can hear the fan running.
I have taken to Genius Bar twice to no avail. They could duplicate the problem the first time I had it in and ran some type of software repair. Didn't permanently fix issue. Second trip they tech thought it might be one of the two internal sleep switches. She ordered them but when they ran diagonsics on those switches, the said they were good and didn't replace or repair anything.
I have replaced both HDD and RAM and reinstalled 10.8 but problem continues. Any suggestions?

Not sure if this will help--but my MacBook was having similar problems. It would fall asleep and then when I would try to wake the computer, the screen would stay black but the computer was running.
Here is what I tried:
Turn of your mac
Press the power on button
Immediately after you press the power on button: hold down the following 4 keys:
Command + Option + P + R. Continue to hold them down until you hear your mac make the power on sound twice. Once you hear it twice, let go of all keys.
This should re-set the sleep settings. Worked for my computer, I hope it works for you if you haven't already tried it.

• My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse. I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze. When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally. Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine. But there are blue stripes on my screen. The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes. I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer. If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed. I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this? Is it the firmware or what? I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

• Macbook Pro Freezing

I have a 2008 MacBook Pro. It ran fine a few months ago before I wiped the HD to reinstall OSX 10.7, I just wanted to clean it up and start over. Since then, it hasn't worked right. After about 15-20 mins of use, it will freeze completely. Mouse won't move, doesn't respond to the power button or any keyboard command.
I figured maybe it was a bad install of OSX 10.7 so I installed 10.5 on it from the original disk that came with it. Same results. If I run the diagnostic memory tests from the startup disk, it tells me everything is fine. If I run disk utility, it verified all disk permissions and said the hard drive appears to be ok. So what is going on? Running from the OSX 10.7 recovery sector on the Mac, it installs just fine. But coming off the Hard Drive, it freezes after about 15-20 minutes so my first thought is possibly a bad hard drive. But that wouldn't entirely explain how it ran just fine before I had wiped out the hard drive, and now it won't. I'm in safe mode right now and its running just fine. I pulled up the console and copied the log. You can see at around 9:00:00 where the computer was rebooted in safe mode. Before that, I had started it up as normal, started running system updates, left for a few hours, came back, and it was frozen. Can anyone figure out where the fault is? I'm completely lost and HATE using my old windows PC for daily use, I just want my Mac back

I'm willing to bet that this has something to do with iCloud. I've been facing a frozen computer nearly every time I go into it.
In Activity Monitor I have seen two programs associate with iCloud that take up about 2.5 GB of memory (I only have 4 in the computer) -- causing everything to freeze. One of these is called "iCloud Helper" and the other one is something like "Address Book Sync helper" -- I see parts of these names in the stuff you have posted.
I am at my wits' end with these and have written to Apple asking them to do away with these or fix them. To get rid of the Address book sync thing I have gone into system preferences for iCloud and unchecked Contacts -- but then spontaneously it gets rechecked. And oftentimes after I Force Quit the iCloud helper, it spontaneously turns on again. My conclusion --- the iCloud is basically unusable. It turns a Mac into the most useless, clogged, sluggish PC. If this is happening to a lot of people's computers -- and I see no reason why yours or mine should be an exception -- these programs just might destroy Apple itself.
So -- I'm about to completely give up on iCloud, and I suspect that others will too unless this gets fixed.
Cheers,
Bob

• Could ths be causing repeated freezes?

The computer in question is a G4 MDD 1.25GHZ model with a single processor. It has 768MB of RAM and is running OS 9.2.2. The user is mainly working in Quark 4.1.1, Photoshop 6, Acrobat 5.0 (Distiller) and some Illustrator.
About a month ago this computer started freezing. It would freeze during start up. It would freeze in any of the above-mentioned programs. I'd start it up in OS 10.3.9 and it would freeze. I decided to do a complete reinstall, and encountered freezes while installing 10.3.9.
I purchased a new hard drive, got the OS installed and it started freezing again. I swapped RAM with another 1.25 and it still froze.
I tried to start it from a CD recently and it wouldn't recognize any CD. And then I remembered ... I had pulled the DVD burner from this model and exchanged for a CD burner in a Quicksilver G4. Thus, the Quicksilver had the MDD's DVD burner, and the MDD had the Quicksilver's CD burner.
I unplugged the CD burner in the MDD and it didn't freeze all of yesterday or overnight. And it's still running.
Both optical drives are set for cable select. Is there something about the Quicksilver's optical drive that may be causing the repeated freezes?
Thanks in advance.

Since there's only one optical drive in each Mac, I
presume I'd set the jumper for Master?
Yes. And the drive should be connected to the connector on the end of the cable, not the one in the middle.
Verify the cables are fully seated (including the power connection) at both the motherboard and the drive. Make sure the cable isn't pinched when you close the case, cut, or otherwise damaged. (I've done that, grounded out the cable on the frame..nothing worked)
I haven't tried the hardware test CD in part because
the DVD-ROM in the Mac in question won't recognize
disks. This problem just cropped up and is what got
me to thinking if the optical drive was the problem.
If the drive worked in the other machine, it should work in this one.
Thats why I'm more inclined to think cables of jumpers as opposed to hardware.
As stated, I've done that swap before w/o issue. I've also pulled an ancient 4x CDR from an old Windows box and put it in a QS machine w/o a problem.

• My MacBook Pro won't go to sleep when I close it

1. My MacBook Pro won't go to sleep when I close it and my fan runs all the time. When I go to my activity monitor it show my mail program runing at between 98% and 153% of CPU. I've called Apple Service and they can't help. HELP!

My Mac Book Pro does not go to sleep (the light on front stays steady) when I close the lid, unless I turn off the charger.

• TS3423 Mid 2010 MacBook Pro Freeze's

I have a macbook pro i7 2.66 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HD. Never had a problem till I installed Mountain Lion. Every now and then my my computer freezes. Hard drive won't stop running even if it's on sleep mode. It's **** frustrating. Now with this hard drive running non stop and with the system freeze's every now and then i fear that it will damage some other hardwares due to this problems. Is there anybody know's or have any solution with this problems? Thank you! Appreciate it.

try these:
open disk utility and verify your disk. once that's done, verify your disk permissions - repair if needed. that might take an hour or more depending on how much repairs are needed.
once that's done, restart your macbook.
if that doesn't help, try doing a SMC RESET.
good luck.

• Macbook air freezes in screen save mode (Mid 2011 model using Mountain Lion

My MacBook Air freezes during screen save mode & is completely unresponsive. The only option is to press & hold the power button to force a power down then restart the laptop. This issue is not intermittent but happens every time the laptop is in screen save mode for any length of time (+20 mins).
The laptop is a Mid 2011 model. 1.8 GHz i7, 250 GB solid state HD, 13" display with 4 GB RAM. I updated to Mountain Lion latest version about 1 month ago.

Hi there. I'm not using any 3rd party screen saver software, only the standard Mountain Lion supplied stuff.
I did have to get the Genuis Guys to reset my SMC as my battery, fan & power lead were showing problems. Those issues are now solved but this has persisted.
I am considering a reinstal of the OS system but that is a 1 hour download following by ?? hours of waiting for the program to restart.
I'll try using one of the other screen saver options to test that.
Thanks for that idea.
