MacBook reset help

Just received my stolen MacBook Pro back. Don't know the user names or password, and when I go to reset they upgraded to osx mavericks, and won't let me restore? Any suggestions to go into a Mac store?

You'll need to Boot to the Online Internet Recovery system.
At starup of the system hold down the Command + Option/alt + r keys and keep them held down until you see a globe on the sreen.
Have the system connected by an Ethernet cable to your internet router. Wifi does work but it is best to have the system wired to your router.
From the resultiing screen that loads, Mac OS X Utilities, Select Disk Utility and click Continue. in the Disk Utility windows that opens select the Top Most Entry in the left column and the partition tab on the the right. From that area select One Partition froom the Partition Layout drop down and set the format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and name it Macintosh HD. Then click the Options button and make sure GUID is selected as the partition table.
Then close that options window and Click the Apply button.
Once that completes close Disk Utility and select Reinstall Mac OS X for the list of options.
A New Fresh copy of Lion will be downloaded from the internet and when that finishes the actual install of Lion will begin.
When that is finished the system will reboot and you will be at the original setup assistant system just like you had taken it out of the box for the first time.
Once you do all that post back and I'lll guide you through getting all the iLife apps reinstalled and upgrading it back to wherever it was before it got stolen.

Thank you for your reply, and the information.  This is what I came up with:
I added the strings as instructed, however when I went to sign the script in terminal, I was told:
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: replacing existing signature
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: code object is not signed at all
    In subcomponent: /Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app/Contents/info.plist
Also, here are screen captures of the lines that I added.  Mine are the top string entries:
Thank you for your help, thus far!

    Hi Timia,
If you are using Safari as a web browser :-
Open Safari, go to Safari menu > Preferences > General, and put Google as the homepage. Then, choose Google as your default search engine.
If you are using Google Chrome as the web browser :-
      Open Google Chrome.
In the top right corner of the page, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu > Settings.
In the "Search" section, select Google from the drop-down menu.
Let me know if you still experience any issue.
    Regards,
    Aadesh

  • Keyboard (hardware & onscreen) suddenly don't work anymore - only factory reset helps

I have my Passport for about a month now and just experienced the following problem for the second time: all of sudden the keyboard (both hardware and onscreen) don't work anymore. I cannot enter my device password anymore, I can focus the password dialog, but then simply nothing happens when I press keys.
After a restart of the Passport it asks me for my SIM card PIN. Again, I can focus the text field in the dialog, and I can touch numbers of the onscreen keyboard, and the number keys light up, but no input gets to the dialog.
There is simply no way to activate the device anymore. I can do a backup using BlackBerry Link, and I can access the device with BlackBerry Blend - but the device itself is useless. No kind of restart or reset helps. The only solution is to do a factory reset, after that the device works fine again - for some time.
Once this happened while I was on the road, without doing anything with the device. The second time it happened when I was trying to deploy a self written app using the Momentics IDE.
    Additional information:
    - development mode is on (needed since I want to develop Apps for BB10)
    - Snap is installed
    - a handful of Android apps from Google Play store are installed
    - two BlackBerry World apps are installed (whatsapp and HUB++LED)
Did anyone experienced similar issues or has an idea what might cause this problem?
    Thanks!

Have you tried using a usb keyboard/mouse?
I don't use any usb, only use PS2. Maybe it is possible to use some sort of a PS2 to usb converter, but I would rather like the PS2 to work.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Far Cry 4 - computer froze. Only hard reset helps.

    Hello dear forum.
    First my pc:
    4790 stock
    8gb ram
    Sabertooth Z79 Mark2
    Msi Gaming 980 ( Oc factory )
    Corsair 750 RM
    HDD 500GB SATAIII
So 5 days ago when playing Far Cry 4 my computer suddenly freezes with "BZZZZZ" sound.
( ctrl alt del and so on didn't work I had to pull the power and restart. )
    So only hard reset helps.
Question of course . Why i was had one single hard freez 5 days ago?
There is no any minidumps file to analyze. Minidump folder is empty.
    No minidump file.
Nothing appears in the Event Viewer other than the typical error messages stating that the previous shutdown was unexpected.
On windows event log i have this:
    Log Name: System
    Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power
    Event ID: 41
    Level: Critical
    Description:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
It can be game or something with hardware?
After that i run even Prime95 Blend for 10 hours, without errors.
I test Watchdogs for 2 hours , no crash.
I test Metro Last Light for 2 hours, no crash.
I test Unigine Valley for 1 hour, no crash.
    I test 3dmark 11 Extreme loop for 1 hour , no crash.
Also i dont OC my pc, all is stock.
I am using 334.75 WHQL drivers.
What you think that freeze was game\software or hardware related?
Like i say all is fine now, but i am worried about that one single freez ( only hard reset helps ) from 5 days ago.
    Thank you for any suggestion.
    Should i be worried?
Yes it happens only once, so thats why i create a topic problem. Because i want to know , what caused that one single freez. I never had freez like this even before.
The most strange that my freeze happened once, 5 days ago. I am now 100 hours in game ( Far Cry 4 of course ) and nothing happened again.
It can be software or hardware problem?
Freez was related to software or hardware then ? What you think?

based on everything that you said, nothing is conclusive

  • OLD MacBook - need help!  Clueless

I have an old MacBook - I believe it is a 2008.  It still works great, except I believe I need to upgrade my operating system.  All of the websites I keep going on are telling me that they don't support the browser I'm using (Safari 5.0?).  When I try to update the browser, it says my operating system needs to be upgraded... and I cannot figure out how to do that.  I tried to install Google Chrome after that and it said it was not compatible with this version of MAC OS X.
I don't need Google Chrome necessarily, just want to be able to update the operating system and browser on this MacBook.  Help!
Current Info: Mac OS X version 10.5.8.
I've gone under "Software Update" on the apple menu and it says there are no updates at this time... clearly there are!  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Trying to avoid a trip to the Apple store.  Thank you so much!

OK I'm doing this again since someone flagged my post but only the second one was erroneous.
The first one was to send you to Apple's site:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Where a download of Snow Leopard will cost you $19.99. (Is that ok?)
Your MacBook (2008?) can run Snow Leopard 10.6  and 10.7 for sure. The last version in that year will run 10.8.

  • Macbook factory reset help.

Had an earlier discussion about this comp. I bought it from a gentleman who was leaving the country for a long time and  it was never set back to factory settings and there are certain things that are blocked by password. I was given a solution on here and was confirmed but Apple as well. So I bought  OS X Snow leopard as instructed.
Now I am unable to even update the OS without a password. Does anyone know a way around it? Or is sthis something that I have to bring Apple store? The man that I bought this comp from is not in a place where he can be reached.
    Thanks for all your help

If you know if it came pre-installed with Lion, you could do an Internet Recovery (Command+Option+R) holding those keys down until you see a spinning globe. You won't be asked for an Apple ID because it came pre-installed with Lion. If it came pre-installed with Snow Leopard, you need the install SL disks.
If you buy it as CT mentioned, you should go to another Mac, log into the App Store with your Apple ID and purchase ML. THEN go back to your MBP and you should be able to enter your Apple ID and the install will proceed.

  • After upgrading to Mavericks on MacBook Pro, help doesn't open

I have a MacBook Pro OSX 10.9.4 with a processor 2.8 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo with memory of 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3. I just upgraded to Mavericks last week and now I can't get the help menus to open when in Finder or using Numbers. I haven't checked the other applications. Do I need to do something with my help menu items? If so what would that be?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).

A negative shutdown code, if it happens repeatedly, may indicate a hardware problem. If it happens only once, the cause is uncertain. The precise meaning of the codes is not publicly documented.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
