Macbook Restart Problem

Macbook battery died during game.  Plugged back in.  Screen is frozen on game picture.  Menu bar and dock are missing; no buttons work including the power button.  Entire keyboard is dead.  Any suggestions?

Remove the battery...let it sit for a moment, then plug the power cord in and try to start. Still no joy, see this procedure for reseting: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management ... - Apple Support

  • Macbook Battery Problem

Hi all, this is my first post, but something weird happened to my macbook that I have to share with you.
Ok, my Macbook Core Duo 2.0GHz (1st generation) have had no problem during its first and half year. Then I left the notebook sitting at home for one month as I was away on business. Came back, the machine won't start, used AC adaptor and showed the battery not charging, "x" and everything. My warranty expired, so I bought a new battery. Once I got that, it worked fine for almost 7 months.
Another business trip left my macbook for 1 month, I came back, the battery is dead again!!! So I went to apple support and bought another new battery. This time I installed it at home, and it doesn't charge what-so-ever. I tried everything from SMU reset, PMU reset, P-RAM reset. NOTHING WORKED.
So I took a friend's macbook battery to try, and it worked! I can charge that battery with my macbook, and my battery won't charge on his macbook. So scientifically I thought its the battery defect. I went to Apple Care and they say they will replace it for me, but think that it should be my macbook's problem. Must be the Logic Board, I explained why I disagree, and that the battery came with only one LED blinking when I got home to charge, the current was already too low to charge.
Anyways, I was able to buy a second-hand battery really cheap but with limited life-span and use it until my replacement battery returns. Everything seem fine and I can charge it up to 100% although it will only last me 50-mins, still not bad, right?
I was reluctant to completely drain this battery now since I am afraid it will drop to zero and won't recharge like the other ones.
I am using Boot Camp, and Vista as well as OS X. Suddenly today, two days after I bought the 2nd hand battery, I was using Vista to show my friend the battery problem is fixed. But suddenly out of nowhere the battery dropped from 95% charged to 0% in seconds. It shuts down automatically, and the battery was flashing one LED indicating it's dying.
I started back in Mac OS X and found the charger able to recharge, but it fixed at 0% for 20 minutes. I thought I am screwed and went out for a smoke. I came back to see the battery charging back to 5% and then slowly to 10%, and 20%, suddenly it went back to 85% in seconds, and then 100%. I try to unplug it and it seemed fine. I left it on without the adapter for 20 minutes, the battery drain normally, to 70% (it's fine considering the battery was 2nd hand) My friend thought I should try to switch back to Vista to see if the same thing will occur. So I did, and before the Vista screen came up, the macbook blacked out. I checked the battery indicator and it's flashing one LED again!!!
So I switched back to Mac side and re-do the charging, this time it took longer to get back to +90%, I thought this is normal, 'cause I did use the battery longer on the Mac side before switching to Vista for the test.
I thought to myself, why Vista drained my battery, and then I remember the first battery that died on me was about the time I switched the PC side to Vista. Prior to that, the PC side was using XP. The second time it died it was in Vista as well. I also remember I wanted to reduce the size of my PC partition, so I trimmed off unnecessary features like hibernation by (Powercfg -h off). It saved 2G in size but it may be causing some problem to the charging circuit for the Mac-hardware??? Don't know for sure.
So I erased my Vista partition, and re-installed XP. Since then I tried both sides without adaptor, usually for 10-minutes or less, and no sudden dropped to 0% occurred since.
Everything else is working fine with my macbook, except the power features. Right now at least I can charge the battery, but I am always worried about when or IF the battery will dropped off and kill itself.
I am waiting for the replacement battery to return from APPLE, and hopefully when it returns, my Macbook will be able to recognize the DEFAULT low-charge of a new battery. I'm still not sure if my macbook is defective, and if it did killed the first battery replacement they gave me a few days ago. If it did kill a decent battery, will it kill this new replacement as well??
I know for a fact that the reason why the machine won't charge the battery is because the current of the battery has become too low for the machine to be able to charge it. If the current becomes lower, the "X" will occur suggesting that the machine doesn't even recognize it's a battery. But what I want to know is what caused the battery to drop to such a low current if I turned off the macbook during storage.
Sorry for the length of this post, but I have to be clear on all the details if I want help, I suppose. Right now my question is (1) Why is this occuring?? (2) Am I right in assuming that by removing Vista with XP, the problem will not repeat?? (3) Is it likely for any new or 2nd hand functioning battery to drop to the state of the other battery any time soon?? (4) Am I doing proper care for my Macbook, and what should I do in the future to avoid the same problem from occuring??

    gpotts,
Thanks again, here's my battery profile: (keep in mind this is the 2nd hand battery I am profiling) BTW, something happened when I was doing this message, I left the notebook on for about 20 minutes, it dropped from +90% to 48%, macbook prompted me that the battery is running low. I plugged the adaptor and it went back to +95% within minutes...
Good thing is, I haven't seen the sudden drop to 0% ever since I removed Vista, and also I am able to charge my battery everytime I try now, no more "NOT CHARGING" or "X" indication.
    Any clues??? Thanks in advance.

  • Moved iMac = Macbook - LICENSING PROBLEM

    Hi,
I just switched from an iMac to a Macbook. Got the Macbook for college stuff and I'll be selling my iMac shortly. I transferred everything over to my Macbook via an external hard drive, following the instructions on screen. It transferred everything successfully; couldn't be happier.
So I pulled up Photoshop CS3 on my new Macbook. The error message displayed is The licensing has stopped working, with no error code provided. Weird thing is, the products still worked on my iMac. So, I proceeded with these steps:
Deactivated my licensing on my iMac
Uninstalled Adobe CS3 on my iMac
    Restarted my Macbook, same error
Used Adobe's license repair tool and removed the licensing registry from my iMac
Restarted my Macbook, tried again, same error
    Uninstalled CS3 from my Macbook
    Reinstalled CS3 on my Macbook
Restarted my Macbook, tried again, same error
Used the license repair tool on my Macbook, removed the licensing registry from my Macbook
Uninstalled CS3 from my Macbook, re-installed everything
Restarted my Macbook, tried again, same error
I am absolutely out of ideas as to what to do. Please note that this was a computer TRANSFER, so I don't suspect is has anything to do with the weird CS3 network errors some people have had in the past. Both my iMac and Macbook have Snow Leopard on them.
Technical support recommended I read the knowledgebase.  I did so, tried all of their fixes/solutions, and still haven't been able to get the product to work.  It's like my Macbook has some "licensing signature" on it that I can't delete.  I deleted the FLEXnet folder, Adobe PCD folder -- everything. Why is it still doing this?
    Thanks in advanced.  Any ideas?

Same story for me.  I migrated from a G5 iMac running Leopard to a Intel MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard.  Everything works except CS3.  Photoshop Elements and Adobe Reader work but none of the CS3 elements work.  Adobe Customer Service worked with me for 5 hours including waiting time.  Technical Support now has the case.  I have spent 3 hours working with them with no resolution in site. This is over a period of 11 days.  It seems it would be easy to remove all registration files and do a clean reinstall.  They don't seem to know how to do that.  On problem I have is when they ask me to change the name of a file, even though I have read & write permission, the name won't change.  I can remove files and folders, but there are some I can't change the name of.
Some things they had me try were Technote kb401528,
Error "Licensing for this product has stopped working" when you start any Adobe Creative Suite 3 application
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/401/kb401528.html#MacOSX
    and Technote cpsid_51260,
Launching Adobe products on Mac OS X 10.6 results in error "Licensing for this product has stopped working"
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/512/cpsid_51260.html
Tech Support is now going over my installation log files, at least they had me send them to them.  I never get any calls back.  I alway have to call them and it takes over an hour to get someone to answer the phone.

I have had Similar issues in my case it only seems to happen when the laptop is plugged into power. also if you shine a light through the apple logo on the front of the case you can see the LCD is actually running as is the OS it would appear the backlight is off. In my case I can resume operation by taping the F1 or F2 keys. All be it an annoying finx it is at least a simple one

  • Macbook wifi problems

I have a 2.1 c2d macbook and a network based around a d-link dsl-g604t. I have the macbook since christmas and it connected perfectly for the first few days but now it won't connect at all and it gives the error code '88001006' and says 'There was an error joining the airport network "the_ether"'. There are also a g4 aluminium powerbook, a g3 powerbook, and a clamshell iBook which all connect to the network fine. Is the macbook the problem and if i change to 10.4.7 will this fix it?

Hi, I had similar problems and eventually the Airport card just disappeared from the system.
At first I thought it was dead but I reset the P-RAM, and it came back.
    This is from Apple support:
    # Shut down the computer.
    # Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    # Turn on the computer.
    # Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    # Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    # Release the keys
You can also try holding down the on button til the computer beeps. I did that too, which of the two solved my problem I don't know.
If the above doesn't work it could be a loose antenna on the airport card, check that the antenna is properly fastened (unfortunately, this isn't as easy as on the early macs)
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/MacBook-Core-2-Duo-Airport-Card/519/1
If this doesn't work you probably need a new airport card.
I'd take it in for repairs if you're not comfortable or very able at fiddling about with the internals of a computer.

  • Macbook airport problems linked to battery power?

I too have experienced the macbook/airport problem, specifically since 10.5.8 came back. When I upgraded to 10.5.8, it was so useless that I just reinstalled tiger. Then Snow leopard came out and I upgraded only to experience the same problem but not as severe.
I have just been able to pin/point the problem today (mainly because I just grew so frustrated and spent considerable time trying to figure out). I have tried all the other potential fixes posted on here to no avail (changes airport settings, replacing card, changing dynamic IP to manual, encryption etc).
This is what I have determined and was able to reproduce it:
When macbook is running on power (plugged in):
If battery power is below 60%, connection is spotty - the lower it is, the worst the problem.
If the battery power is above 60%, no problems at all, runs fast and no drops.
When macbook power is not plugged in and running on battery:
    Below 60% almost useless
Above 60% spotty and worse as the battery drains
Can anyone else test this out? I've sent Apple an e-mail.

I've gone down to maybe 15% without any noticable difference in connection.

  • K7N2G-L restart problem

    Hi
If I do a cold start my system will boot up ok,but if I have to do a "restart" after installing something it boots up and the gets to the part where it says "Searching for IDE devices" and it will hang.If I power off and then on again it will boot up normaly.Apart from that it runs well...any ideas  ?(

4 80mm Cooling Fans Throughout the case.
CPU Temp runs on average between 50c - 60c
Case Temp runs on average about 89f - 100f
When I set this thing up I had a 300 Watt supply and it did not fully run things and did have some problems with the HD lights staying on, my guess was due to not enough power. So beefing it up to 360 Watts fixed that.
Also had restart problems quite often, at least 3 or 4 times a day it would just reboot on its own, I run and operate a computer store , so I had the ability to try different things to fix this. Turns out the memory on the nForce chipset boards is VERY important. Brand new sticks from a variety of sources had different affects, including not counting all the memory properly, restarting randomly and not booting at all. Believe it or not, one of the cheapest memory makers on the market seems to have been the best for use in the machine and that would be the Kingston Value Ram. So, if at all possible try getting some of them and see what happens. The worst??? All Components Memory.
You guys should also look at the 4 lights that are or should be in the back of your machine provided by MSI for your troubleshooting aids.. They do work and are quite helpful.
Sorry for the lengthy message post, but thought maybe I could be of some help to somebody.

  • 10.4.11 update - restart problem

    Hi everyone,
Sorry if someone else has posted this, but I couldn't find a similar problem on the forum.
Since updating a few days ago, my mac no longer stays permanently shutdown, but restarts itself around 30min after shutdown.
I have run the combo update, verified disk (no problems), verified and repaired permissions, checked all the energy saver preferences were correct etc., but the problem is still occurring.
Can anyone advise what might be done to remedy this?
    Thanks very much.

  • Bold 9930 restarting problem

    hi,
Inspite of updating the device software several times the restarting problem still prevails.
    Kindly advise,
    Regards
    Sunny

    Hi sunny3788
If even after updating your device software your device is still having the same problem then can you confirm a few things like how many third party application you are having on your device, or are you still having any of those third party application that you are having before this update? If it is then I prefer Uninstall all those applications to see it reboot stops.
If problem disappear then install one application at a time to see which application is responsible .Also as you mentioned on your previous thread that you brought your device recently so I think your device is still under warranty and you can approach your carrier because it might be an hardware issue. And in that situation you can ask for a replacement.

MY Iphone Has a restart problem again and again wot to do please tell me

Basics from the user guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.  If you go through ALL of those steps and you still have issues, you need to get your phone checked out by Apple.

  • HT1222 Will this update hjelp the periodic restart problem on iPhone 4S

Will IOS6.1 update improve the restart problem that occurs with iPhone 4s?

I tried all of the suggested solutions mentioned in this thread, and finally did a full reset according to Apple's instructions, step by step (as an engineer and 40 year computer user I am good at that stuff).
Sorry to say after the several hour process, not one of the problems I have experienced have been solved.
IPad 2 is still running slow and choppy.
Some Apps do not even load.
Website pages will not load and result in error messages. One particularly annoying Safari error on loading a new web page is:  "a problem occurred with this webpage so it was reloaded".
MY iPad  2 worked perfectly for the last couple of years through several updates that performed seamlessly, but this one and the two most recent corrected updates have rendered my iPad so degraded that I don't think I will be using it much anymore. I originally bought the tablet because of it's smooth GUI and fast performance, the reliability and error free environment, and Apple's proven record for effective updates. That's all gone now.

  • Delta Platinium restarting problem

Hi, first time posting a problem here (why.....)
my board: K7n2 Delta Platinium (bought a month ago)
All worked fine untill...Yesterday i installed heatsinks to the mofsets, run super PI and Prime with 1.425 of voltage, all good, then turn off the computer. An hour after, i turn on the pc again, pressed the Del key quickly and the pc didnt want to start, cut off the power and turned it on again, seemed ok and i thought all because of the DEL key, after entering windows i decided to make sure of things: restar, then the same problem, the pc hang on at the initial stage. I tried serverl times and got the same problem again, need to cut off the power to star the pc, a notable thing: no memory checking at the start, sometimes does but so random...the Dbracket: all red except the top left (1).
For people that dont want to read above:
I am having restarting problem, hang on at the early initialization.

At first glance it looks as your underclocking your CPU in voltage. Put your Vcore back on auto.

  • Restart Problem Fix for Mega 865

Just letting people know how I fixed my Mega 865 restart problems
    my quick story
I built my 865 with 512RAM and installed XP MCE2005. The next day I installed a 1 GIG RAM chip and the system would not boot into XP. It would get to the windows boot screen and crash when loading the hard drive drivers.... or somewhere around there. couldnt even get into safe mode. I removed the Radeon 9800 and it booted. oh no could it be the AGP Card?
well I put it back in and tried every thing,
removed the new 1 GIG RAM, same problem
    reset BIOS
    reset to Safe Settings BIOS
    reset to Optimal BIOS
repair XP recovery console, fix MBR ...etc
then I the BIOS I tried dropping the AGP Aperature size from 64MB down to 8MB. It fixed the problem.
I'm guessing the issue is really one of power. the PSU is only 230w and with the extra ram stick, it had problems putting out enough power.
so I dropped the agp aperature down to 8MB (shouldnt matter as the card has 128MB and hopefully shouldnt need system RAM)
I also turned off the serial port (set it to disabled - who uses the serial port anyway)
and disabled the modem and network card (dont need the modem and I'm using the wireless card instead of the ethernet one)
hopefully turn these things off will prevent furthur power issues when running games and stuff.

the prescott core P4s are hot enough as it is, without squeezing a 3.2ghz in there, along with a hot GPU
i would recommend the northwood core P4, as they run cooler and are just as good as prescott P4s as tests have shown
and i would also advise you to search through this forum for topics about mega 180 heat issues; the issues will apply to all mega series, just seems to cause more of a problem with the 180, but most ideas will apply to 865
first thing to check is airflow, make sure that there are no cable looms in front of heatsink, obstructing airflow to the fan. bear in mind too that by default, the fan is already blowing hot air off the AGP card onto the heatsink (yes, poor design by MSI but it can be resolved apparently by "reversing" fan airflow).
