MacBook retina screen artifacts

I put my screen to sleep using the hot corner and when I came back it looked like this (notice the curtains on the bottom).  Anybody else seen this?

Yes - I'm seeing something like this (mine looks a bit different - bits of windows all over the place, strange pixelation etc.), but only after my mid-2012 Retina (same specs as Olivier.c but 2012 model) has been asleep for a while. It's something others have been noting here for a while and I've yet to see a universal fix. It's not specific to Mavericks as it was happening in Snow Lion too: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4036736?start=0&tstart=0
I already have automatic graphics switching turned off in Energy Saver, so it's not because of some glitch when it switches the graphics.
I have recently reinstalled Mavericks, as I was experiencing very slow startups after the upgrade, and having an ongoing issue with the very jerky scrolling in Safari which had carried over from Snow Lion; the reinstall fixed both of those problems, but now I've got THIS problem.
Interestingly, I cannot take a screen shot of the issue - at least not using Command + Shift + 4 - as soon as I start dragging the cursor across the screen to take the shot, it clears up! I haven't tried Command + Shift + 3 for the whole screen yet. Also haven't tried opening and closing the lid; it's only happened about three times now and it's rather transitory and resistent to reproduction on demand, so it's hard to test.

  • Macbook Retina screen black coating issue

My MBP Retina 13" -Oct '13 has developed a discolouration of the black screen coating on the top left and bottom left sides. It is visible in bright light/sunlight and seems that the black colour is wearing off. I have been extremely careful about periodic cleaning and use a Moshi Teraglove sometimes with a little water sprayed on it. From the time of purchase, I have used the MBP in a BookBook case also purchased from the Apple store.
It is possible that this has happened gradually but became more noticeable now when I saw it under bright light/sunlight.
In normal light it is hardly noticeable but one can see it if one looks for it.
Now I can't help looking at it all the time. Am very concerned that this can happen to a MBP just over a year old and very carefully maintained. My Late '08 MB 13" Aluminium also has a black coated screen and is still in perfect shape!
    Will welcome any suggestions.

First of all do you have AppleCare? If so call the Apple support about this problem. There seems to be a possibility of a problem but not clearly a defect:

  • Retina screen artifacts

    Hi all,
Does anybody else have strange screen-tearing/artifacts on their 2014 rMBP?
For example, this on Tweetdeck is a regular occurance:
I've also had the Finder bar in osx have an all back background and black text until I moved to a different spaces screen and then back again.
Is this a hardware (graphics card) issue, or likely to be fixed in a software update?

  • 2012 macbook pro retina display artifacts on screen when using onboard video

2012 Macbook Pro Retina Display artifacts on screen when using onboard video.
About a month ago I've noticed these strange artifacts (blocky pixelated looking) running vertically down the screen. It first started when using Safari. Then it started to happen all the time. I turned off the auto switch video in preferences, which I'm assuming forces the computer to use the separate video card and the artifacts go away.
On top of that issue I also have had the ghosting issue.
    Anyone else have this problem?

artifacts onscreen could mean a faulty gpu. You said by forcing it on inbuilt gpu you do not find this issue highlights that. Do take it in to apple for service and also tell them of your ghosting issue.
There are a few retina owners who have faulty gpus.

    Hi,
Take a look at this thread, they are following the same issue that you have at the moment.

Also I know the issue you have right now is not the thing I'm about to say but look at for this one too:

  • Can't open Adobe cs5.5 .dmg on a 15inch MacBook Pro Retina screen

    Hi there,
    Hopefully someone can help.
I recently bought a 15inch retina screen new macbook pro after my old one started to die last week - I bought Adobe cs5.5 a few years ago and I'd really like to be able to install in on the new laptop so I can get on with my work. As there is no disc drive I downloaded the file from Adobe which took many hours and now as soon as I click on it it comes up with this.
I tried to use the disc utility to do something with it but wasn't really sure what I needed to do and buggered up the first download and had to try and get it again. I haven't had this problem with my old laptop - i'd even updated the os to be running the same so I don't know why it's having a problem with the .dmg and as I haven't had the problem before I don't really know what to do. If someone could help me out I'd be super grateful as I do have client work I need to get on with.
    Thanks so much,
    Emilia

Me thinks you have tried to connect to a shortcut folder and not a genuine folder.
Note Mac OS X in Mac OS X 10.4 has 3 popular folder shortcut locations:
The leftmost column of the Finder window.
The horizontal toolbar on the top of the Finder window
The translucent bar which can be anchored on the side or bottom of the screen known as the Dock. These are not true folder locations, but only locations for shortcuts. When you click on a folder for a volume that is not mounted, or is a folder which was deleted it will behave in this fashion. Often if you click on it the right fashion, it will change to a question mark.
In addition if it is an alias to an existing folder that has no contents, it will behave this way from the three shortcut locations.
If you right click instead of the left click a folder, it may think you want to do something to the folder which you can't do. Make sure your mouse button functions properly as a Primary button on Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse.
Also make sure Universal Access is not turned on as it too can cause funny behavior in the mouse click actions, in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Universal Access.

Macbook Pro 2,33Ghz Core 2 Duo Radeon X1600, it has been presentng screen artifacts since a year ago. It is not in warranty now, but I read in the web that plenty of people is having the same problem as an early degradation issue. Sometimes the system freezes and stops respondign so I have to restart and lose all the unsaved work. A few moths ago, the Superdrive stopped recognizing the disc because of a firmware update released by Apple!! It is not acceptable. Solution?
Apple should give a solution to all these people who spent more than 2500$ in a laptop that has stopped working in less than 3 years!

Yes, it appears the X1600 has more than its fair share of issues. I've seen reports of people reflowing the solder joints on/around the GPU with success, even baking the LB in the oven.
The rest is something you'll have to take up with Apple.

  • How to clean Macbook Pro (unibody,non-Retina) Screen?

I have bought a Macbook Pro 13inch non-Retina model. However I have not put any screen guard over my screen. Now I found some strains on my screen. I have tried with the micro-fiber cloth but not all the strains gone. Now i am really helpless...
I need some suggestions how can i clean my macbook's screen perfectly?

    Yes, see here for details

    HANDLING  TIPS
    Cleaning Your MacBook
Use a very lightly damp, soft (if you can squeeze the cloth very tightly and even a drop comes out, its still too damp), lint-free cloth to clean the computer’s exterior. Avoid getting moisture in any openings and be very careful not to get the damp cloth around the trackpad edges or around the inside edge between the monitor and its bezel. Do not spray any type of liquid directly on the computer. Do not use sprays, solvents, or abrasives; do not attempt to use any solvents on the LCD display either directly (especially!) or indirectly. There is never any call to use any type of lens cleaning solvents on the screen of your LCD display. Again, do not spray any liquid directly on the screen.
Dont press on your LCD screen or spray it !

  • Firefox window UI is tiny on MacBook Pro retina screen

I have Firefox 33.1.1 installed on a 13" MacBook Pro with retina display, and the UI is always tiny when viewing on the in-buillt retina screen. I often have the MacBook plugged into an additional 27" Dell display and firefox looks fine on this display, but when moving the same window on to the retina screen, it redraws like the attached screenshot. If I don't have the external display plugged in at all, and open Firefox after a restart, the same issue still occurs.
Example screenshot is uploaded here: http://imgur.com/WpCIMGN

There are two things that can be tried:
    # Reset the zoom feature from the Firefox Menu (Ctrl+0 (that is a zero) should reset it, )
    * To make things bigger, press '''Ctrl''' and '''&#43''' at the same time.
    * To make things smaller, press '''Ctrl''' and '''-''' at the same time.
    * To reset the size back to normal, press '''Ctrl''' and '''0''' at the same time.
    # Do you clear the cache on quit? If so the zoom percentage may not be saved because it is only remembered for the current session.
Also make sure that its not an add on, by starting Firefox in Safe Mode [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]

  • Macbook Pro Retina Screen Resolution Issues

I have just bought a retina display Macbook Pro (Early 2013) with OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion.
Before getting it, I did not realize what an effect it would have on the use of my existing programs, and had I known, I would have thought twice before switching from my non-Retina Macbook Pro. I have never had so many problems with a brand new computer. On my retina screen, programs such as Microsoft Office 2011, Adobe Creative Suite 5 and Acrobat Pro X run with an awful screen resolution and impossibile legibility. The pixelated graphics and image quality hurt my eyes, beyond the fact that I cannot see my lines, images and text properly in order to work with them.
In these programs, the "Open in Low Resolution" button is enabled permanatly and cannot be changed as it's option is ghosted out. I do not know how to make it look better or what to do. I cannot work using this low resolution and this issue has affected my productivity.

  • Single pixel white line across macbook pro retina screen

I have a Mid-2012 model of the Macbook Pro 15inch with Retina screen which is just out of 1 year warentee.
There has suddenly appeared a very thin white (pixelated) line across my screen - about 1/3 way down from the top.
Its constantly there, but more visible on a grey background.
I've contacted Mac about it and they say since its out of warentee they can't help!
Its literally 14months old... almost seems like the issue is perfectly timed to happen just out of warentee!
I'd be keen to hear if others have experienced similar problems with the retina screen or have found any solutions!
    Loyal Mac user since 2002!

  • HT204032 Does the non-Retina screen MacBook Pro have the ability to initiate Power Nap?

I've seen that the Retina screen MacBook Pros can use Power Nap from Apple's WWDC keynote but can the non-Retina screen MacBook Pros do that too? It has the same processor and close to the same RAM. Or is it because the Retina screen MacBook Pros have flash storage that they can do Power Nap? Thanks

  • New retina screen macbook, using my firewire products ?

    Hi,
I am considering buying the new retina screen 15 inch, but just realised that it doesn't have a firewire port, i have some firewire only products i use and have no interest in living without these,
i don't know if i can get some adapter to usb 3, and if this is possible if it impacts on the speed,
If on the other hand if i have to go out and buy a thunderbolt package i think maybe its time i floated back to windows, though i really hope apple has some good answer to this question as i doubt i will be the only one asking this question, most of these apple users will likely have been very loyal in the past so we need some answers, not just go and buy the old style macbook,
    cheers

Thanks for this information. I didn't see it. Hope this will be available together with ML next week....
    Thanks!

  • Why does my MacBook Pro Retina screen display pixilated graphics when using the finder?

While this started just after the latest OS X update, each time I use the finder now to locate a graphic to upload, the graphic appears extremely pixelated. It does not matter which application I use to search and upload a graphic file, the graphic appears smaller and bleeds out. I just purchased the new Video Motion Pro video editing software, and every single graphic I upload to this application is pixelated. Has anyone else had any problems with their retina display after the last update?
Here are some examples of hi resolution graphics that now appear pixelated on my Retina screen:

    http://www.screencast.com/t/WhG1h5dBh
If anyone is aware of an application or Apple software test that allows me to check my graphic card and retina display, please advise. I have performed multiple disk utility checks, restarts, etc., but nothing seems to help.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
