Macbook Retina screen black coating issue

My MBP Retina 13" -Oct '13 has developed a discolouration of the black screen coating on the top left and bottom left sides. It is visible in bright light/sunlight and seems that the black colour is wearing off. I have been extremely careful about periodic cleaning and use a Moshi Teraglove sometimes with a little water sprayed on it. From the time of purchase, I have used the MBP in a BookBook case also purchased from the Apple store.
It is possible that this has happened gradually but became more noticeable now when I saw it under bright light/sunlight.
In normal light it is hardly noticeable but one can see it if one looks for it.
Now I can't help looking at it all the time. Am very concerned that this can happen to a MBP just over a year old and very carefully maintained. My Late '08 MB 13" Aluminium also has a black coated screen and is still in perfect shape!
Will welcome any suggestions.
Shankar

First of all do you have AppleCare? If so call the Apple support about this problem. There seems to be a possibility of a problem but not clearly a defect:

  • Macbook Retina with Mountain Lion issues after waking from sleep.

Macbook Retina with Mountain Lion has the spinning beach ball of death after waking from sleep a few times. Anyone else seeing this?  A fresh boot is very quick, but waking from sleep lags at times.  Then after a few times the spinning beachball of death appears and nothing is responsive making me reboot the machine.

I've been suffering from this too, and am currently trying this:

Seems to be tied to this 'Power Nap' feature.  I tuned it for 12 hours instead of 24.

  • Macbook Retina 15" GPU drop Issues

Hello, first of all sorry for my poor english (i'm spanish, but i use this forum rather than the spanish because here there's more activity).
Here's my question: I have a Macbook Retina 15" mid 2012, i usually play games on it with bootcamp (i know, this isn't a gaming machine but i've been playing on it since now perfectly). I use it connected to a 27" FullHD monitor. The problem is that when i'm playing games (it doesn't matter if they`re very demmanding or not) it shows smoothly but after some minutes suddenly the framerate drops, but later continues to play smooth. I used NvidiaInspector to show temperatures but they seem normal (here is summer, and playing CPU is over 80º celsius and GPU usually is over 70-75ª). The NvidiaInspector also shows constant drops in GPU voltage when start the game fps dropping. What could happen? Thanks!!!
    More Information:
In bootcamp i have installed Windows 8 64 bits and the latest drivers. I have up to date the EFI, and i tried te SMC reset with no results.

    Bienvenido/a
Does it only happen in Windows? If so, do you notice that fans go faster when temperature increases?
I don't recommend to play games for a long time with a MacBook Pro with Retina display because it overheats quickly and it may cause problems. It's possible that the GPU slows down because of the temperature.
If your Mac is in warranty, simply take it to an Apple Store or reseller and tell them what happens, because it could be a hardware problem

  • Macbook pro screen blacks out

I just bought my first Mac.  I have noticed since I received it a couple weeks ago, that the screen blacks out occasionally.  I am pretty sure this mostly happens when I am in Safari.  Any ideas why?  This will happen with my ipad 1 every once in a while too.  It will black out and revery back to the home screen.

You should take it into the store as it certainly could be a hardware problem.   In my case, however, i didn't notice it when I was on Lion, noticed it on ML, and then haven't seen this problem again since downgrading to Lion.
Since your problem is intermittent, it might be hard to produce at the store.  So, you might want to try to capture it on video before you go to the store so you have something you can show them.

  • Macbook Pro Retina screen black lines

    Hi everyone.
I have had my macbook pro retina since june 2013. I have had two strange experiences with the screen, all of a suddent after the screen went to sleep (on battery) and i turn it on again I get the screen filled with black and gray lines like this
and I cannot restore it to normal without turning it off and on again. I could take a screenshot though.
So I was wondering if you knew what it is due to and what should I do? My laptop is fairly new and I still have warranty.
It was purchased in New York but now I am in Copenhagen, Denmark.
We do not have a proper apple store, but some "Apple stores" which are affiliated with them and they normally ship them to Netherlands for repairing. Should I bring it in and get it fixed? Also I can do that here in DK too even though it was bought in New York right?
    Hope someone can help me.

Yes. Take it to the store and have it checked out.
    Best.

  • Macbook Pro Retina screen black sound adjust working

    Hi,
I already had this issue a few times. Sometimes my Macbook screen doesn't wake up after a display sleep.
It looks like the system is online because I hear the sound when adjusting the volume.
When I press the brightness adjust nothing happens and the sound adjusting isn't working anymore.
Normally I hard reset my MacBook but the last time I wasn't sure if it was my battery was running out so I reconnected it to the power source and waited a few minutes somehow the display woke up again after pressing some random buttons. My battery was a 80% so that wasn't the issue.
I saw a few post after about a blackscreen when logging in but not on wake-up.
Should I contact apple for a replacement?
    Cheers!
    Note: Installed all available updates

  • Macbook Pro screen blacks/colours out when laptop is moved

    Hi all,
    I have a 2010 Macbook Pro 13" running OSX 10.8.2.
In the last 24hrs or so it has begun acting very strangely. The screen has been blacking out when the computer is lifted off a surface or tilted backward to sit on it's spine. At first, it was just when it was moved to put pressure on the back left hand corner, but now it will black out when it is nudged and even with no movement at all. Additionally, the screen now not only 'blacks out' (mind you, it still appears to be backlit), but it will also black out to a specific colour. So far, my screen has been completely filled with bright pink, and then green, on two separate startups. I have had to do a forced shutdown when this happens as it becomes completely unresponsive. If I try and reboot too soon after forcing shutdown, I get intermittent beeps that are synchronised with the light on the front right hand side. When this happens, I get no Apple chime, no response from the keyboard, nothing. Have to force shutdown again and wait for a while. The beeps seem to be one to every five seconds.
My first thought was RAM or the display cable, but after replacing the custom RAM with the original RAM I got with this computer, the only difference I found was that the beeping at startup stopped with one of the custom chips out. The screen issues persist.
Moving the display angle of the Macbook Pro does nothing to return the display. Keyboard stops functioning. I've tried booting into Recovery, but often this hasn't worked. I've reset PRAM and SMC but have not noticed any difference.
Any ideas would be much appreciated

It sounds like a defective Mac. I would see what the Genius Bar says.

  • Macbook Pro screen blacks out keys stay lit

The gist of it is in the subject
Pretty much without warning, does not have a preference for type of application being ran, the screen will completely black out. If sound is being play it either stops or begins to skip. The keys stay lit. The only way to bring it back is a hard restart.

  • Macbook pro screen blacks out for few seconds?

    Hey
Since around 2 weeks I am facing a problem with the screen, it blacks out for few seconds in a random time and then it become normal. I have Mountain Lion since more than 6 months and always it was working fine but the last 2 weeks I faced this problem so how can I solve it?

Which model MacBook Pro do you have (e.g. "15" late 2011")?

  • MacBook retina screen artifacts

I put my screen to sleep using the hot corner and when I came back it looked like this (notice the curtains on the bottom).  Anybody else seen this?

Yes - I'm seeing something like this (mine looks a bit different - bits of windows all over the place, strange pixelation etc.), but only after my mid-2012 Retina (same specs as Olivier.c but 2012 model) has been asleep for a while. It's something others have been noting here for a while and I've yet to see a universal fix. It's not specific to Mavericks as it was happening in Snow Lion too: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4036736?start=0&tstart=0
I already have automatic graphics switching turned off in Energy Saver, so it's not because of some glitch when it switches the graphics.
I have recently reinstalled Mavericks, as I was experiencing very slow startups after the upgrade, and having an ongoing issue with the very jerky scrolling in Safari which had carried over from Snow Lion; the reinstall fixed both of those problems, but now I've got THIS problem.
Interestingly, I cannot take a screen shot of the issue - at least not using Command + Shift + 4 - as soon as I start dragging the cursor across the screen to take the shot, it clears up! I haven't tried Command + Shift + 3 for the whole screen yet. Also haven't tried opening and closing the lid; it's only happened about three times now and it's rather transitory and resistent to reproduction on demand, so it's hard to test.

  • MacBook pro screen black on startup

I have a 2007 MacBook pro. When I went to open it, the screen came up black. I held down the power button to turn it off to restart it. When I pressed the button to turn it back on, the internal components began (I could hear them) but the screen stayed black and there was no startup sound. I did some research and performed the SMC reset as well as the PRAM reset (I believe that is their names). Now when I turn on the computer, the startup sound works but the screen remains black. I have tried adjusting the brightness and holding a light to the screen but see nothing. What else can I try? I am far out of warranty and think it might just be the end of this laptops life so if I'd prefer not to spend money on apple support for them to tell me it needs to be replaced. Also, the nearest apple store is two hours away so it may be difficult for me to take it in to get looked at. Any input or suggestions are appreciated.

    nboyenga,
are you able to connect an external monitor, to eliminate the possibility of its graphics card having died?

  • MacBook (2007) screen black after reboot/shutdown

Hi all I hope you can help me.
    I have a MacBook C2D 2GHz, 2gigs of ram from mid 2007.
I cant remember when the problem appeared but maybe 6 months ago.
Every time my macbook is rebootet or shutdown after an update or if it runs out of battery the screen remains black. The sleep light stays constant on but the chime is played and cd drive makes it usual short start up sound.
I can hear the harddrive working and after maby 30 sec, the screen comes on but its all whiteish with a black stripe down in the right side and stays like this, other times the screen comes on with the desktop but flashing/bounching
If I hold down the power button to kill it off and hit the powerbutton again the same thing happens.
The way I fix it is to power off, take out the battery for about 10 sec. put it back in and hold the trackpad button down or put two fingers on the trackpadand power on, it starts normal with the grey screen and the littel apple logo and boot normally to the desktop. But today today it took me 7 atempts with the above method before it worked.
Is my screen about to die or is it software related.

I have the same problem and I dont think I had this happen until 2 weeks ago and I've had the latop since the last week of August. I've also had the problem crop up when I had the laptop go to sleep while watching a video online and when I tried to wake the laptop back from sleep, I get the blank screen with the cursor. My system is a Macbook air 11" 2013 1.3 Ghz with 4gb ram and 256 gb SSD. I also have a 15 MBPro and have not encountered this problem. Is this anyway related to the recent update that OSX was pushing for the upcoming Maverick update?

  • MacBook Pro screen black with cruiser

I turned on my MacBook Pro today to find it starts up all normal then it just goes to a black screen with the mouse cruiser... I've tried shutting it down and turning it back on a couple of times but it just does the same it was fine last night when I was using it. Also the brightness goes up and down and it makes noises when I press most of the keys /: please help

    Hello Olivepal,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your computer is not booting like normal.  I'd like you to do the two processes below, first starting with the SMC reset, followed by resetting the NVRAM.

  • Early 2008 MacBook Pro screen black wont wake up from sleep won't restart

A few months ago my screen would flicker and freeze every so often. It hasn't done so in a while.
Today, I was working, and it was working fine. I shut it (in sleep mode), and a few hours later I went to open it and work again and the screen wouldn't come on, and from what I can hear wont come back on. I've held the power button down and the sleep light will go off, but if I hold it down again, you can hear the computer do something, but does not chime as if it were starting up. The battery is fully charged, I've taken it out, let it rest, and put it back in, and its still not working. Twice now I've held the power button down and all I get is this deep loud buzzed beep.
Any ideas what this could be???

  • Macbook pro screen black

Macbook pro running 10.8 boots but display is black

Only the people looking at your machine will be able to tell you whether it needs to be kept for repair.
At the Genius Bar, explain that your hard drive isn't backed up and you're worried about your data if the machine needs to be kept or sent out for repair. Ask whether you can take the drive home with you instead of sending it along in the machine, or whether the store can back it up for you before doing anything else to the machine. If the answer is no to both questions, take the whole machine back home, remove the drive, copy it to another drive or replace it with a new one, and then take the machine back to the store for repair.
