Macbook running Lion not connecting to internet

Alright this is a problem that just came up recently, for me and the other macbook user in the house (Macbook pro running leopard)
The internet would fail to connect, after inputting the correct password it would display "connection timeout" and act as if the network password was wrong.
I also can't connect to the internet via the ethernet cable either.
The internet is working via ethernet to the main PC in the house and via wireless to my smartphone, but the two macbooks can't connect. There wasn't anything that's changed recently that could have caused the problem, I upgraded to Lion months ago, and have used the internet without difficulty until now.
So far I have deleted and re created the wireless settings on my computer and deleted the keychain information for the network, reset the network encryption and reset the router/modem various times, and so far nothing has worked.
I would be thankful for any help that you could offer.

As an update, I managed to connect via Ethernet. Still no luck with Wi-Fi though.

A self-assigned IP address just means that your computer isn't connected to anything that can assign it a "real" IP address.
Do you see the AirPort menu item (a series of arcs) in the menu bar? If so, are the arcs gray or black? If they're gray, you're not connected to any wireless network. Do you have your own Wi-Fi network or are you trying to use another one? If you pull down the AirPort menu bar item, do you see one or more wireless networks in the list?

MacBook Air will not connect to Internet (no problem with other devices). Message states " Wi-Fi has the self assigned IP adresss 169.254.147.1and will not connect to Internet.

First, try restarting the router. If there's no change, hold down the option key and select the Wi-Fi menu in the menu bar. What value is shown for Security?

Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.

My solution, which is not much, is to restart iPhoto and it then connects to the Internet. This has been an ongoing unsolved problem.

  • IOS devices not connecting to Internet while MacBooks does

    Hi,
I'm in the process of closing my Verizon Internet and testing a Comcast service. Before unplugging my Time Capsule from the Verizon adsl modem I made sure that all worked ok with the Comcast cable connection. My MacBook worked right away through Ethernet and so it did through wifi when plugging the TC to the Comcast modem. The problem came on our iOS devices, 2 iPhones and 2 iPads, as they did recognize the network but could not connect to Internet.
I called Comcast customer care but as expected they wash their hands as I have Internet on my computer...
Any advise? Is there something else I need to activate?
    Thanks
    Pablo

Change the names to short no spaces no special characters. For wireless and the TC.
Lock the wireless to on a/n - b/g
    Then fix the channel for 2.4ghz.. 1, 6, 11
Those measures usually get the iphone working .. ipad should work also.

  • Macbook Air will not connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet

Macbook Air will not connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet? Any ideas why not and how to fix this problem?

Power down the router. Unplug the cord from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug the cord back in. Restart the router.
Wait until all the lights are lit up properly.
    Restart the computer.
    Best.

  • "Not connected to Internet" error message

    Hi Guys,
Safari keeps throwing me "you are not connected to the internet" error messages. I'm running 10.5.1 and I chose the "upgrade" option.
The errors are displayed randomly on sites and if I get the error upon visiting a site, I usually have to wait about a half hour before i reload the site and it works normally. This is happening to approximately 20% of the sites I visit. I can view the same exact site in Firefox, but I also get the same error in Mail, Aperture (flickr export) and twitterific.
If a site (like Flickr) pulls resources from multiple urls, even though the initial site loads, the resources may not. For instance, loading Flickr, the page may load, but since the images are on a separate server (or multiple separate servers), the images may not load or may load randomly.
I tested failing urls in Network Utility > Traceroute and urls that throw the error message get an "unknown host" message. I assume this bug has to do with Mac OS X as opposed to my ISP. and that web kit is probably the culprit, as I'm having this problem on apps that use web kit to access the internet (firefox does not).
This error is also happening on my powerbook G4 that was upgraded to 10.5 as well.
anyone else having this error? i don't seem to see anything in the forums.

I am having this IDENTICAL problem. My ISP is Cox Communications and at first I thought the problem was DNS related. It certainly appears to be, but I went and dusted off my old Windows laptop and internet access works very well, fast and snappy. Since upgrading to Leopard on my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro (oh yes, I was stupid to upgrade both at the same time) I have been so frustrated with this problem. Safari will tell me I'm "Not connected to Internet" while Firefox will happily load the same page. Mail will tell me it can't connect to the smtp server while tcpdump shows it not even trying. A half hour later it starts to work temporarily. I have tried using different DNS servers but it doesn't make a difference. The problem is definitely Apple Safari/Mail. Boo!
Please someone at Apple fix this problem quickly. This is extremely frustrating.
