MacBook running tediously slow

Hi there,
My Macbook has been running very slow lately with the rainbow spinning wheel appearing constantly whenever I try to do something. I've noticed as well my macbook can take awhile to startup with the grey loading screen.
The only intensive activity I do is play world of warcraft. But lately the game has been stuttering as well because of my laptop freezing. I decided to reinstall the OS completely and it's been no bit of difference.
Any ideas? My apple care ran out in feburary too :/

  • Hello, I have a macbook pro late 2011 15 inch with 4 gb ram. My macbook runs extremely slow when logging in after waking up from sleep, locking up and I am unable to use the keyboard. Is there a fix?

My macbook runs extremely slow when logging in after waking up from sleep, locking up and I am unable to use the keyboard. Furthermore, when just using safari to watch streaming television, my computer gets really slow, and locks up, and the dock appears blank and I sit here frustrated. Anytime i wake up my computer, my keys don't respond and I've waited at most 3 minutes untill i can type in my password. Even sometimes when i type in my password and hit enter, it takes forever to open up my mac. I have barely used any storage in my macbook, since i only use it for college, and I have run clamscan wiht no viruses showing... Any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I install new hard drive 500gb and i still have 400gb available but my macbook run very slow getting rainbow all the time on screen

i have install new hard drive 500gb and i still have 400gb available but my macbook run very slow getting rainbow all the time on screen.
    need help

First boot into recovery and select Disk Utility>First Aid and repair the disk.
If there is no improvement, perform a Safe Boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1
If there is an improvement, then third party applications are probably the cause of the problem.
    Ciao.

  • Why does my macbook run so slow?? I am running OSX 10.8.4

    I am running OSX 10.8.4
My Macbook pro is running extremely slow.
It takes a while to power down.
web pages do not pop up automatically like in the beginning.
What can i do to get my laptop back to fresh out the box performance???
This is getting irritating, since i need this laptop for school.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

    Thanks a million!

    What about this?
Good brand and a little cheaper:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148604
Would it be worth the $80 or should I just put it toward a used MBP?
    Thanks!

  • Macbook running extremely slow .. please help.

I have a second gen macbook w/ 2ghz intel core duo and 1 gb of ram.  The machine is running extremely slow.  I am unable to load web browsers (all) under 30 seconds and they are all unstable if they do open.  Please let me know if there is a fix for this.  Thank you very much!  S

  • MacBook running wireless slow

Can anyone suggest why my MacBook has suddenly started connecting to the wireless networks really really slowly, and then sometimes not loading up the page? It just seems to be Safari and Mail, but the strange thing is that my iPhone and any other computer connects fine. It's just my MacBook and I've not changed anything setting-wise.

    I have OS X 10.4.11
Then I'm not sure of the problem I'm having. Over the past few weeks, my macbook has been running extremely slow on Safari, Firefox, and Mail. I have already made changes to the router and checked the cable modem connectinons. I guess I need to scan for any virus' (even though I know it is rare). Are there any free online virus scans? I'm looking for any update or fix for the problem.....
it takes minutes to load web pages, and sometimes it is unsuccessful. It is painful to get online!

  • Macbook Running very slow lately

My Macbook Pro has been running very slow as of late. Takes awhile to open programs and often has the beach ball for just simple tasks. I ran an Entrecheck as well but not sure what most of it means or how to fix it:

    Diagnostics Information: ℹ️

In the actual situation you have much too low Ram (much to much PageOuts), and to little free space on your disk.
But that may be better after taking out some softwares:
    1. in  SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems   remove all entries, with the minus sign underneath.
This does not uninstall anything but just prevents that these apps always run.
Then Restart, this should help already, but before you start any app, do following:
    2. Uninstal the Android software it is not compatible and/or not necessary: lots of issues in Yosemite.
    3. Stop using Chrome for the time being and (in case you do not want to use Safari) use either Firefox or Opera: both are fast and safe and are not resources eaters like Chome. I propose to uninstall Chrome.
    4. I think that you did not install Java after the Yosemite install, but that it was already on your computer. You should search here (forum) for the install of the correct Java install (if you need it, otherwise disable it in the Applet).
    5. I am not 100% sure but I seem to remember that Director Shockwave causes issue, so you could uninstall it.
    6. Delete the AdobePDFViewer plugin from   MacintoshHD->Library->InternetPlug-ins.
    7. Also the Valvesoftware Steamclean seems to cause issues in Yosemite. uninstall.
    8. I am not familiar with motorola.moto, but it looks as if it is rather incompatible with Yosemite.
    RESTART.
    See if this helps.
Free up some space on the HDD, by hand !, do not use tools or cleaners !
If you do not see any better behaviour, start in the SafeMode, and see if you have the issues there also. If not we have to find some more culprits.

  • Macbook running very slow - just started, HELP

    Hello,
My MacbookPro just recently started running very slow, even doing simple tasks it runs slow. Was working perfect Sep. 8, 2014. Turned it off for the night, then turned it on the next morning and it took about 5 mins just to even turn on. After it finally turned on EVERYTHING just started running opening the internet, Word, Power Point, and even iTunes was running slow. The songs were literally stopping every 30 seconds. My Mac has worked perfect and all of the sudden BAM. I use it for school all the time so its kind of stressing me out. It keeps freezing up as Itype this message unfortunately.
I ran Etrresoft like most ask here are results:
NOTE** - I deleted Hamchi awhile back, i am unsure how to get rid of it because i don't know where to find it, i thought i had deleted everything.

Start up in safe mode and uninstall or update Hamachi.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Macbook running very slow after Archive & Install

Hey everyone, I needed to reinstall my OS the other day so I used archive and install because I needed to save Ableton Live files. My problem is that now the computer runs horribly slow. Any application I open takes about 20 seconds to load and I get the rainbow 'wait' wheel constantly. I am hoping all I need to do is repair my permissions but i would like some better advice
    Thanks.

How much free disk capacity do you have? You need to maintain a minimum of 15% of total disk capacity as contiguous free space. Check to be sure that everything is in place, then delete the Previous Systems Folder. That should instantly free up a bunch of space.

  • 2009 macbook running very slow with Yosemite?

After installing Yosemite there was a big change in performance for all actions on my computer. Start up, basic actions around the desktop and all applications are going considerably slower - slower than they ever have with my computer. I've changed a few of the settings, and that has helped, but it's still ridiculously slow. I haven't downloaded any MacCleaner app or anything. Can anyone help me with this?
Here's the results I got from EtreCheck:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Start with the really simple things like rebooting…
        Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) - Time since boot: 31 days 7:16:27
Computers can run for months on end if they are setup for that (e.g. a server) simply rebooting a laptop will help to flush any RAM that has been leaked & clear out old temporary files etc. It may make it run better.
Your hard disk is a spinning disk - if you want better performance upgrade to a SSD for better read & write times (the whole OS should run quicker).
More RAM could help too, you can upgrade to 16GB if you want to do so.
These are damaged login items, delete them in System Preferences > Users & groups (may be called accounts), Login items tab.
        iTunesHelper    UNKNOWN  (missing value)
        uTorrent    UNKNOWN  (missing value)
They are not loading, but it seems pointless to leave them as a login item.
If you have specific issues we may be able to help you look at them, but "MacBook Pro running slow" is far to vague to be useful to us here.

  • My MacBook Runs Very Slow After BootCamp.

Today i decided to install a windows partition using bootcamp. At first I didnt'g give the partition enough memory so i deleted it and partitoned it once again. After going back to OSX i noticed a huge difference in performance. Everything ran incredibly slow and took a long time to process even the simplest tasks. Thinking it would solve the problem i once again deleted the windows partition. I rebooted and things got a little better. I then tried to repair disk permissions and again had little results. Whenevr i have itunes open or try to open it, it causes big problems and everything slows down. The same thing happens anytime i try to play an audio file on any player. However if i keep itunes closed and don't try to play any music things run decently, still slow but decent. But in order for things to stay this way i have to constantly clean my RAM up. If i don't i get left with around 10 MB of RAM. I checked the activity monitor and seems that coreadiod is using up the RAM. The process is staying around 115% of CPU usage. This happens even when everything is closed and i am idle at my desktop.
This is a big problem and i can never have more than about 3GB of RAM free and even then it quickly drops until i'm left with just MB's. My MAcBook is a 15 in. retina MBP with 8 GB of RAM. Before the bootcamp OSX always ran super fast with no problems. There is only one thing i can think of that caused this problem. In my windows partition i downloaded various media players including itunes and winamp. I was trying to basically share my itunes library on the OSX partition over to the windows. To do this i changed the itunes media folder location to the one on the OSX partition. This did not accomplish my task but it did keep that file directory. Also with windows media player i added the same itunes media folder to the list of folders for WMP to access, this also did not work. In winamp i added the same folder and it read my music no problem. I think this is where the problem lies seeing as itunes and playing audio files seems to leave my computer almost unfuctional. The odd part is it doesn't even have to be an audio file in my itunes library, a file completely seperate that i didnt try to add to the windows partition causes the same issue.
I'm not too knowlwedgable on this so i have no idea what else to try. Any help or any suggestions as to what to do would be greatly appreciated.

After looking into the problem more, it turns out everything works great until I open itunes. itunes does not open and if i force quit it, that is when coreaudiod starts taking all of my RAM.

  • Macbook running incredibly slow - Etre Info - Please Help!

My Macbook has been running slow for quite sometime, and regardless of my internet provider, it is deathly slow to load.  I have seen individuals post the Etre info, so I thought I would do the same.  Not sure if this will help, but here's hoping!  I understand this computer is quite old, just trying to get it back into fighting shape post college.  Whether it is a hardware upgrade (if possible) or some software tweaks I'm fine with that. Thank you for the help in advance!
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Macbook running extremely slow

    Hi,
I have a 2012 Macbook Pro. I believe the model is a Macbook Pro 9.2. I am running Yosemite and increased my RAM from 4 GB to 8GB a month ago. Up until yesterday afternoon it was running completely fine. Now it is extremely slow. For starters it takes a good 2 minutes to boot up and even once it is booted up it takes another two minutes before it will open any programs or applications. I have plenty of hard drive space available (over 300 GB) and when I check the Activity monitor there does not seem to be any programs using up more CPU or RAM than I would expect. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem is, or how I should proceed with troubleshooting from hear on out?in advance.
    Thanks for any help
