Macbook runs hot

Hello all, my '06 Macbook recently started getting very hot, even when I'm not running much.  It's been slowly creeping up temp wise over the last few months, but this week it's gotten pretty bad.
According to iStat Pro, the CPU temp is currently 86℃ (184℉) and I'm only running Firefox and TextEdit, with a laptop cooling fan, and the ambient temp of the room is in the low 70s.  The exhaust fans are on (6208rpm), but it still seems pretty hot.  Other threads pointed me to http://www.intelmactemp.com/list, and my temps seem to be on the high end.
Is there any way I can remedy this?  Or is it even worth fixing at this point?  I usually run several programs at once, and I'm worried that this problem is only going to get worse, and eventually kill my poor little mac.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You might try opening Activity Monitor (Utilities folder).....click on the CPU tab....from the top of the window click the drop down menu and select 'All Processes'.....look for something using double or even triple digit CPU percentages.....

  • MacBook runs hot with Windows 7

I have one application that runs in Windows so I loaded Windows 7 using Bootcamp on my MacBook. The problem is the processor temp rises, even when setting idle with only the Windows desktop. When I start and use the application (MediaShout) it gets even hotter. I don't know the actual temp, however, I can tell it is quite hot and the fan progressively winds up.
    Any thoughts?

Try running on battery and in Win7 switch power options to balanced vs performance. Do this first when launching Win7 ... do NOT allow this app to auto start when windows starts. Lastly see if the fans remain idle.
    Also:
    Boot camp or vm?
any other apps or services running in os x while using win7?

  • Macbook runs hot sometimes

My macbook has been running really hot lately when I do certain high demand things on it, and I'm not sure why. We're talking 192-204 degrees f!
I know this has to be way too hot and I'm worried it'll burn up, and this can't happen.
I've checked processes to make sure there isn't something going on there, nothing there, I've somewhat opened it up and it doesn't seem like there's a lot of dust or anything inside, I haven't thoroughly checked the fan though, I'm really not sure what it could be.
Under normal undemanding use it runs from 100-130ish degrees f, and before this started happening the highest it would top out at was maybe 150-170ish.
Anyway I have no more warranty, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Its a black macbook with a 2.2 Ghz. core 2 duo processor, 2 gigs or ram and 160 gig hard drive.

The moral of this story is that yes, Macs are still wonder products, but they are not being made to last. Apple/Mac seems to be so driven by merchandising/consumerism that its losing site of the small things like quality control, which Mac was known for in its early years.
    Its early years?
The very first Macintosh, the 128k, had a number of shortcomings. It had no fan and ran hot enough that it ruined several large value electrolytic capacitors prematurely. It had power supply wires that were too small, thus creating voltage drops that caused stability problems. The heat also cooked the CRT's flyback transformer prematurely.
Most models had some problems. The powerbook 5300 was a disaster. Apple finally had to issue a very long warranty period to fix it's countless issues. I think the extended warranty went for 5 years, maybe it was 7.
I have never taken apart a Powerbook Duo that did not have cracked display hinge gussets. Their keyboards were also very low quality. A couple good years maybe and then it was down hill to the point they became unusable.
Heat sink compound has been an issue with a number of models. Sometimes the issue was too little and sometimes too much.
The early G3 Blue & White towers would wipe out your hard drive if you put two drives in. Apple soon came out with a new motherboard that fixed that issue.
The point is, ever since the beginning Apple has been putting out defective computers. It is not a new thing just because it is your first experience with a defect. Apple will continue to put out defective computers as long as humans are designing and building them.
The thing to take note of is that Apple tends to put out less low quality stuff than everyone else. That is why Apple still gets superior customer satisfaction ratings to other manufacturers. Also, Apple tends to be the one that actually innovates, that everyone else copies.

  • Macbook running hot!!!

My Macbook Pro is running sooooo hot my software starts to slow dratically. Is there anybody out there that can help me out?
Email me directly at [email protected]
    Thanks

    Hi Java,
Do a search for "temperature" or "hot" in this forum and you will find many threads that can possibly help you out.
I doubt anyone will e-mail you, just come back here once you get an email from apple saying someone replied to your post.

  • MacBook runs hot when battery is in

Maybe I haven't entered the right searches, but my problem seems unique as far as I can tell.
It's basically all in the title -- the MacBook gets very hot when (and usually only when) the battery is in. This started happening just yesterday and is now persistent. Several observations:
    1. Without the battery, the MacBook is around 56 degrees Celsius or so, don't really hear any fans.
    2. If I put in the battery (after putting the Mac to sleep), the MacBook very quickly goes slightly above 70 degrees and the fan gets very loud while awake, spitting out very hot air.
    3. It has nothing to do with charging -- this happens whether or not the power adapter is attached.
    4. It is not the battery itself that is hot -- when I remove it, it feels about room temperature.
    5. I don't notice any CPU usage spikes with the battery in.
The most undesirable side effect to me, frankly, is not so much the noise and heat as the decrease in battery life with the fans running continuously full blast. My battery still has 95% of its capacity yet is only good for about an hour and a half of usage on a full charge, with the screen brightness set to the lowest possible level and Energy Saver set to "Better Battery Life." Just a couple days ago I was getting almost an hour more of use per charge.
I haven't tried too many things to remedy the problem myself since I can't think of too many things to try, although I did reset the PMU (shut it off, removed battery and power adapter, held down power button for 5+ seconds). I also have all the firmware on OS X updates including the ones that came out a couple weeks ago (I just went to Software Update and it didn't find anything new, either).
So if I seem to have eliminated the battery itself, the charging mechanism, and the CPU as a cause, what then could it be? If someone thinks the battery could somehow be defective and short-circuiting something inside the MacBook I'd like to try swapping out the battery with a friend's (I'd do it anyway, but it's a bit of a drive). Otherwise, it's straight to the Genius Bar (even longer of a drive).
    Thanks in advance!
    Dave
    MacBook 2.0 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Still not sure why the MacBook would produce more
heat with the battery in, all other things seeming to
be equal, but I'll take it.
My reasoning is along this line. The "stuck" process is asking the computer to do something as fast as it can. The CPU produces heat in proportion to the frequency it's running at: when it's running at 2 GHz, it produces more heat than at 1 GHz. When the battery is removed, supposedly the CPU is throttled to 1 GHz. So even though the process is making the computer run as fast as it can, the computer can't exceed 1 GHz and therefore there's less heat with the battery out than with it in.

  • My Macbook runs hot

My MacBook will go to 160 degrees very quickly without anything running but one application. The only thing I can do to "cool" it down is run the fans very high and it has ventilation underneath AT ALL TIMES.  I have looked at activity log and nothing is running but the fan and one application. Can somebody think of anything other than maybe shutting the virus scan off? I have space on my machine and I do not do anything COMPLEX with this particular machine.

open activity monitor and under all processes - see what's using up most of your CPU's resources....highlight any apps using above 10 % in your %CPU section and hit quit process.
good luck....and make sure you are looking at all processes and not my processes when you're in activity monitor.

  • Process "EndPointService" making my macbook run hot

"endpointservice" is using 30-40% of my cpu at any given time. What is this process, and why can't I quit the process (it just starts up again)? The user is "root". Any help or ideas would be very appreciated!

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Try resetting Safari from the Safari Menu Bar. Click Safari/Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons then click: Reset.
Also, go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
That link may be temporarily unavailable. Try again later.
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
    And repair disk permissions...
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Mid 2013 macbook air: battery drain / running hot

    Hi there,
For the last couple weeks my MBA starts to run hot and drain battery fast if I've been using it for a few hours.
I use it a lot on most days and connect to powercord only once it drops down low, like below 20%.
Have just seen other posts who recommend doing that at 50% battery and will now do the same.
However my question is: have i ruined my battery in the meantime?
AND/OR is there something else i can do to get battery running like it used to, and stop the loud fan switching on all the time because it's all running too hot?
I've copied in an etrecheck in case that helps diagnose more....
    thanks heaps for any help!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • I have a macbook pro 10.6.8 system.  My hard drive was replaced under warranty.  Since then, my computer runs hot. The original hard drive never ran hot.  What would cause the new hard drive to run hot?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.8, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7,  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3.  This is my first computer so don't know anything about trouble shooting.  A week before the warranty expired, I took my computer to Apple to be checked.  I was told that my hard drive was bad and they replaced the hard drive.  Since then, my computer runs hot most of the time and the fan is constantly coming on, which is good  My computer rarely ran hot with the original hard drive.  What would be causing this?

    racergirl,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that makes a difference with the heat?

  • MacBook seems to run hot

My new MacBook Pro seems to run hot.  Only have Safari with one window and Finder running.  Is this normal?

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Also, it helps to tell us what the temperatures are because we don't know what you mean by "hot."

  • Safari 6 makes macbook pro run hot.

Hello, this is my first post in this forum.
I've noticed that often Safari makes macbook pro run hot. The fans speed up even though I don't have that many applications open and only a few Safari tabs open.
The only way to slow down the fan is to quit safari and open it. Did anyone else also notice this?
Also I have noticed that Safari doesn't display texts (especially in facebook chat) properly.

Try trashing the Safari cache more often ...
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari
Select   Clear History  (also empties the cache)
Deselect the remaining boxes then click Reset.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that doesn't help, check Safari > Preferences > Extensions
If there are any installed, turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test again.
Emptying the cache and deleting history may also help the Facebook text issue.

  • Safari webpage preview fetcher high CPU usage, runs hot Macbook Pro, fan

Even when turned off in Safari Preferences, safari webpage preview fetcher starts up and starts using high CPU % (99.8% when checked on Activity Monitor!). Macbook starts running hot, fan starts running on high. You can force quit safari webpage preview fetcher in Activity Monitor, but it starts itself back up again!

Well, I disabled safari webpage preview in preferences, and rebooted, zapping the pram and it hasn't restarted, and I haven't had the high fan / hot running so yay!

  • My MacBook Pro runs HOT!

I have a first gen MacBook Pro. 2.16 GHz with 2 GB of RAM. I have noticed out of all the MacBook Pros I get at work, mine runs the hottest. I use SMC Fan Control to give me my temps. Mine with iTunes, Entourage, FireFox, and Adium running at default fan speed of 2000 RPM, my temps get to 163-167 F. I tested another non Core 2 Duo with the same specs as mine, and same programs. It not only ran cooler, but 20-30 degrees cooler at the default fan speed. A few of my co-workers who had early MBPs say that their temps normally averaged 100-120 F at the default speed, but they would bump it up to 3000-4000 to get it cooler. I had to run my fan at 6000 RPM to even get it to be nearly as cool as these other MacBook Pros at my work. I am definitely not to happy running the fan at 6000 RPM to get it even bearable on my lap. I know that the first gen MBPs run hot, but god 30 degrees hotter? What can I do about this?

They run hotter and work fine. Installing haxies that disable a CPU sounds totally daft and I certainly would not buy a dual core computer then use one core.
There are a number of cooling pads with fans that add additional cooling and protect the motherlode when using on your lap.

  • MacBook Pro with Yosemite 10.10.4 running hot and slow. HP file is hogging all the memory

My MacBook Pro (late 2011, core i-7) running OS X 10.10.4 is running hot and very slow with the fan screaming .  Activity Monitor shows a process called com.hp.devicemodel.TransportProxy is hogging almost all the memory and very high CPU activity.  How can I get it to stop.  Force quit will not shut it down.  I would delete the file, but don't know where it is.  Can someone please offer some help? Thanks, Tom

Try to uninstall all HP software (should be in Macintosh HD/Applications/HP folder  It should have an uninstaller within that folder.  My computer settled down just as soon as I finished the uninstall.  Went back into the system preferences and reinstalled my printer and everything seems OK now.  Hope it works for you.
