MacBook - Same Screen issues?

Ive been waiting on buying a Powerbook because I could not get over the screen issues (hoizontal lines) on the 15 inch.
Should I be led to beleive that the new MacBook will not have this issues? Maybe I just need to wait until I see one in the store.
Also, losing FW 800 is a bummer, just bought a new hard drive I was wanting to run though 800.

So then you're aware of the 15'' G4 Screen Lines issue, then? You could see a positive difference with the MacBook Pro? Also, how much brighter did the MacBook screen seem compared to a 15'' G4? Thanks.

  • MacBook Pro Screen Issue - Lighter Pixels in Middle of Screen

I've had my MacBook Pro since about July 2010. Recently I've noticed when I have something dark displaying such as a dark coloured image or a movie playing where it goes black, there is an area in the middle of the screen that displays lighter tha the rest. For example if I have a pure black image there is an area of pixels in the middle of the screen that is lighter. Its probably between 5-8cm long and about 4mm in height. Its only slightly lighter so is only visible with darker images.
Is this normal or an issue with my screen? Its very annoying when watching movies or trying to edit photos.
    Thanks

The Apple Logo does not have its own light source and generate light, at least on Laptops. It uses the screen's backlight for illumination. This is why you can shine a light through the middle of it and see it coming out on the front of the computer, and is also why the illumination level of the logo coincides with the illumination level of the display. If you dim your display completely so the backlight shuts off, the logo will also turn off.
As a result of this, there is no differentiation between the logo illumination and the surrounding screen, so even if you turn the screen on its brightest and put a completely black texture over the middle of the display, you should not be able to see a change in illumination in the middle, at least from the lighting in the display itself. The only reason why you would see this is if you have a brighter light shining on the back that is contributing to the backlight level in the area of the logo.
If the area of lighter pixels is a sharp square, then it indicates a problem with the screen's output, or a residual image problem of sorts. If you can capture what it looks like in a photograph and post it then that would be great, but without seeing the specific nature of the problem it will be hard to diagnose and your best bet would be to take it into an Apple store to be evaluated.

  • My MacBook Pro Screen Issues

My screen on MacBrook Pro is screen shows purple

If you suspect your screen is defective, the best solution is to take it to an Apple Store.  There is little we can do over the Internet to help with hardware issues.

  • Macbook Dropped, screen issue

So, I dropped my macbook, which by the way, I blame on IKEA for their poorly designed Laptop stand called Dave (dont buy it!). But thats beside the point. The stand tipped over, and my macbook was dropped. Now the bottom right hand corner is brighter than the rest of the screen. The shape of the bright spot is kind of florally shapped. Any idea if a.) this can be fixed without a technician, or b.) if this an expensive problem.
    thanks,
    the educator

This type of LCD replacement is obviously not covered by warranty, but you can send it off to places like MBResQ.com where the replacement screen will cost $389 including shipping as shown HERE.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Screen Issue Question

    Hey guys
I have this strange area on my MacBook Pro screen that is noticalby brighter than the rest of the screen. I've tried using the screen capture function, but the patch doesn't show up on that images generated. Here's a photo i took with my iPhone
    xtjied.jpg
It's the area near the centre of the photo where the issue is present. It is easier to see on the photo if you move away from the screen, so you're further away, then it stands out more. However i can see it clearly when using the MBP on my lap or on a table.
My MacBook is still in warranty, so my questions are:
    A) Should i take my machine to the Apple Store to show them the issue?
    B) What are they store likely to do, will they replace the screen, replace the machine or simply turn me away and tell me the issue doesn't warrant action?
Even though it might seem like a small issue, once i see it whilst working my vision is drawn to it, so i lose focus on the rest of my screen.
    Thanks in advnace
    Tom

Thanks for you response, I just want to check you're seeing the same error i am, i know the photo looks like there's a large area with a different brightness, but that's just because of the way I was positioned when taking the photo.
Here's a better photo to illustrate the issue i'm having
    http://i.imgur.com/mDogr.jpg
It's the small area just off centre that is a different colour to the rest of the image.
    http://i.imgur.com/UF8c9.jpg
it kind of looks like a thumb print, but it's not
Would you still expect them to replace/repair my machine?
    Thanks again

  • Macbook Pro Boot Issue, White Screen with Apple

Having a similar issue with my macbook pro. When I press the power button, a white screen appears with an apple icon in the middle and a small cirle on the bottom that is like a timer. I thought that the computer might be downloading something, but I left it on for hours and the computer didn't get out of that mode. I have tried several things such as the installation cd, first aid repair, but both said repairs weren't needed and that the drives were fine. Any suggestions on why the computer is doing this? It's been several days and I shut if off, leave it off for an entire day and when I turn it on, the same screen with the apple appears and nothing else.
    Any ideas are appreciated!
    Thank you!

    Hi Claudiat :
You could try a SMU reset, which may solve your problem,
    from Apple:
    MacBook, MacBook Pro
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.

  • MacBook pro will not boot. I get the gray screen, an apple icon and spinning wheel. Tried to start in safe mode but get the same screen. The only thing different was that I loaded the zedge sync app yesterday. Now getting this problem.

Macbook pro will not boot. I get the gray screen, an apple icon and spinning wheel. I tried to start in safe mode, but get this same screen. The only thing different is that I added the zedge update app to do a sync for adding ringtones to my apple cell phone. How can I get a good boot. I am fairly new to apple computer.

Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405 and then try a normal boot.
Run the Startup Manager to select Startup disk:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310
If those did not work your disk may be sick or dying.  The top priority at this point is to make a backup copy of your data.
Check the health of the disk.  Boot in Recovery Mode (Boot, Command-R).  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left disk icon.  Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”?  If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.  Even if it does not show “Verified” you can still attempt a backup.
Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk.  If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.  If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up.  Do not attempt software repairs until you have secured the data.
If the disk will not show up at all in Disk Utility as your ran the tests above then it may be dead or it may have a bad internal SATA cable.  A trip to an Apple store for confirmation would be in order.
If you have an external disk drive you can use as a backup drive then do so.  If not Google “Hitachi USB 3.0 external hard drive 1TB” to purchase one or go to a brick-and-mortar store (including an Apple store) to pickup one.  Any 1 TB external drive will do.
Assuming it is still breathing you can try to recover the data without booting from the sick disk.
Reformat the external disk.  (This will erase all data on the external disk.)
Boot in Recovery Mode.  Start Disk Utility.  Plug in the new disk.  Select it’s disk Icon (the second one down, left justified). Select the Partition tab.
    Partition Layout > Single Partition
Name: Emergency Recovery 1 (or whatever name you wish to use)
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Options… > GUID Partition Table > OK
    Apply
    Select the Restore tab.
Drag the old system volume (Macintosh HD) to Source.
Drag the new disk volume (Emergency Recovery 1) to Destination.
    Click on Restore.
It may take a long time for the backup.
If that will not complete post back for other emergency data recovery methods, including those from a brody.
If the backup succeeds, use the First Aid tab in Disk Utility to select the old volume (Macintosh HD) and Repair Disk.  If it does not finish with a green OK message try to repair it once or twice more.  If it repairs with a green OK message, will it boot normally?  If not, boot from the Recovery Partition and reinstall OS X.
If it is still not healthy, post back for further instructions.

  • MacBook screen issue? Virus?

On Saturday, I turned on my Macbook, checked my email, and closed it as I went away for about 15min. I came back, opened the laptop, and the screen would not light up. I plugged in the charger, it was orange. So, I waited. After a few minutes the screen lit back up. I just figured that my battery was dead.
Well, it happened again about 30 minutes ago. But, my battery was fully charged. I turned it off by holding the power button, then turned it back on. The light grey screen that usually appears flashed for about 1/2 second then the screen went black. After a few minutes I noticed that the volume controls seemed to work fine, as I could hear the sound it makes. After about another 5 minutes I realized I could just barely see my desktop. I tried using the brightness buttons. No good. Out of the blue, the screen just lit back up again.
I'm kind of concerned... Nothing like this has happened before. I have an external hard drive, which I haven't used in about 2 months. I'm afraid to back it up as virus' can travel with files.
    Do I have a virus?
    If not, what's the problem?
    How can I fix this?
Is it safe to back up my comp?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm confident it's not a virus. It sounds like a graphics card or screen issue. Here are a few things to try.
    1. Boot from the install DVD and let it run. You might even put the lid down (keep it open about an inch though) and put a towel over it to get it good and warm.  See if you can get it to cut out.
    2. Note the exact time the event occurs, and then check your system logs in your Console application for clues to the cause.
    3. Run your hardware tester.

  • MacBook Pro performance issues w/2nd monitor and FCP7

I have this MacBook Pro bought brand-new in January 2010:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
and until today had never attached a second monitor to it. Today I hooked up my Samsung 24" to do some dual screen editing in Final Cut 7.0.3. I was unable to play back my video at full speed in the second monitor, and after a few seconds of skippy playback I'd get that error message about unable to play back video at full speed and to check my RT settings. I was using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. My computer has no issues playing the video in the laptop's monitor at any resolution and any quality settings (I've never changed the RT settings or anything else in the menu ever but I tried every combination this time). I then tried using my TV as a 2nd monitor with an HDMI adapter. Same performance issues. I then tried my friend's newer 13" MBP 8,1 and it performed flawlessly with the same project & footage. I feel like my $3,000 computer should outperform a $1,200 one even if mine is a year and a half older. Any advice?
    Chris

Wow, you posted this perfectly to coincide with an identical problem, albeit using Logic Pro 9.1.5 rather than FCP.
Last week, I purchased a 23" external monitor to use alongside my "flagship" 2011 15" hi-res, 2.3 i7 Macbook Pro with 8Gb of RAM.
It is connected via a mini-DVI to D-sub analog (not that that should matter?) and all appeared fine.
The first issue I had was with my MBP's fan now running CONSTANTLY, when I have the second monitor attached. Even when the machine is completely idle.
When using the machine to record audio, this is a fairly hefty problem and not something I had anticipated - indeed why would I anticipate such a thing?
What is far, far worse though is that over the last few days I have had repeated problems with performance drop-outs and errors in Logic and I have trying to fathom out why. Realising that the only major system change made, was the above monitor connection, I ran some tests.
I restarted my MBP, no other apps were running and with my new 23" monitor attached acting as main display with MBP built in display on as secondary
I loaded up a fairly demanding Logic project which was hitting 40% to 60% CPU usage when using the built in MBP display last week
I ran activity monitor and had CPU usage history open
The above project now repeatedly overloads and playback halts in a given 8 bar section - with CPU at 80% most of the time
I disconnected the external display, no shut down, I just let the machine switch to the built in 15".
Started the same project, the same 8 bar section and hey presto - CPU usage back down to 40% to 60%
The above was reflected in the CPU usage history with the graph showing CPU use down by about a half, when running this Logic project WITHOUT the external display.
There is a very useful benchmark Logic project that has been used as a test by many users to gauge Logic performance on given Apple hardware.
The project has about 100 tracks pre-configured with CPU intensive plugins, designed to tax the CPU.
The idea is that you load up the project with tracks muted, press play and then unmute the tracks steadily until Logic us unable to play contiunously because of a system performance error.
On my MBP, with the external monitor NOT attached, I can play back around 50 of the audio tracks in this benchmark project.
With the monitor attached, I can get about 22 tracks playing.... which is actually a far worse a performance drop (-50% I think!?) than with the first example!
I did also try with just the external monitor attached and not the MBP display and performance was about 10% better than with dual monitors - so still extremely poor, to say the least.
This machine is the flagship MBP and has a dedicated AMD Radeon HD6750 GPU which should take care of most if not ALL graphics processing - I mean it's capable of running some pretty demanding games!
Putting aside the issue of constant fan noise, there is no reason AT ALL, why using an external monitor should tax the i7 CPU this way - it's not as though Logic is graphically demanding... far from it.
I am on 10.6.8, Logic 9.1.5, all apps up to date via "Software Update".
I will of course, be contacting Apple...

  • Screen issues on startup - won't let me boot up

With several applications open, my Macbook Pro "froze up" on me last night.
Upon trying to restart, the start up sound came on and the screen is a shade of magenta with verticle thick and thin verticle lines running across it. After about 30 seconds, the Apple logo goes away and it says I need to restart my computer. Upon trying to restart, I get the same screen.
Any thoughts on how to resolve this on my own without going to the Apple store? I already tried resetting the PRAM and that didn't help. The laptop is fully charged. I have had it for a year and a half and this is the first issue I have had with it.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Try and reset the SMC controller and run the hardware test that's on the install DVD. If the internal HD wont start, it would be interesting to know if a DVD can.
The colour of the screen sounds like a GPU issue, but if it's memory that's failed, I wonder if pulling one or other of the modules installed in your machine might help.
I've never come across anything like this before though.

  • Green/Yellow screen issue? (Not blobs, whole screen discolouration)

    Hey there,
I know there has been many websites posting about the yellow blobs that have been appearing on the new iPhone 4's retina display as a result of manufacturing issue.
However, my entire screen seems to have a much 'cooler' tint that my previous iPhone 3GS or MacBook Pro screen. This is my second iPhone 4 (the first didn't vibrate) and the screen appears the same - unfortunately, I'm a tad OCD and would just like to confirm this is how the screen should appear. When I visited the Apple Store, I didn't have time to compare to other handsets on display.
It's not dreadfully green/yellow, but white appears much cooler than I'd imagined. The 'blue' top bar on apps such as Safari, Messaging and Email appears more green than blue.

It doesn't appear to be in blobs as the sites describe though.
On a pure white screen, the entire screen shows no trace of defects - it is all the same colour with no localised discolouration, it appears white. It just appears as if the screen itself is 'cooler' (I can't find any other word to describe it) - it just appears to add a greenish hue to the screen, specifically items that appear grey, blue or green.
I'm just curious if this how the Retina Display is supposed to be? I know with each successive iPhone, the screen became warmer and more yellow, I was wondering if Apple have decided to go cooler in this approach.

    Tried a pram reset?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US (altough I doubt this might affect this issue, it can't hurt)
Have you tried a Safe boot? Left side SHIFT at power up, hold till you see the progress bar then release and allow to finish booting,. (note this will take longer that usual) Thsi will disable 3rd party software/extensions. Login and see if the issue still persists, if not logout and boot normally.
Another thing you can try is creating a test account and see if it has the same issue there, this will help determine if it is related only to your account.
Also check About this Mac (Apple logo) option, system information, power in the left side bar and check the battery info.
If you have already tried these steps, you should include what you have already tried so people will not offer redundant suggestions.
If you still are having issues, it looked as though you were typing that you thoght you may still be under warrany, if so you may want to take it in and have it checked out, as there the keyboard/screen issues along with the no wake on battery, it may be related to a battery problem?
You can check warranty status by going here and entering your serial number.
