MacBook Satic Blip Sound

+* MB404/B - MacBook Black 2.4Ghz/2GB/250GB, Mac OS X 10.5 - Static noise (sounding like a pop, blip or bip) from either left or right speaker area bought new March 2008.+
I bought the MacBook Black MB404/B, 1st March 2008. No problems for about a month. Then started to display this strange static sound (as above) from the left speaker area. The sound is audible just before the start-up chime. A static blip followed by the chime. The sound will also occur just before any other warning sound. e.g. turning up volume, received email sound, incoming iChat message etc. Each sound is preceded by the static blip, followed by the standard sound for that application.
However; if the blip has just occurred, it won't do it again for a few minutes.
The static blip is also audible if the MacBook has been muted.
Also, plugging in and unplugging headphones would cause the Mac to do three static blips in concession, whilst flashing the red optical light inside the headphone port.
ATTEMPTED SOLUTION: I reset PRAM/PMU, Reinstalled the OS. Started Mac in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) using external FireWire drive. No change.
16th April 2008 I had the MacBook replaced under the guarantee.
When turning it on and running through the welcome to Mac animation, the music was scratchy static sounding from the left speaker. It also made the exact same blip sound before the start-up chime. It appeared not to make the noise at first with the warning sounds, but the next day 17th April 2008 it started to behave the same way. Additionally it makes a slightly louder static sound from the right speaker area which appears more intermittent.
This appears a manufacturing defect having occurred with two machines now.
Note:It's not the hard disc, the sound of a failing HD is quite different. I originally posted this earlier at appledefects.com
Anyone else noticed or experienced this? I'm currently calibrating the new ones battery and if it still displays the problem, I think I may ask for my money back (I bought it from John Lewis:UK, who tend to be better than buying direct from Apple).
Cheers.

UPDATE: On Saturday 19th April 2008 the static blip sound from the right speaker area reoccurred, however; this time it alternated from left to right. I've made recordings which I will upload. My solution: I returned the MacBook for a refund on Sunday 20th April 2008.
I imagine some people might be happy to live with this problem, but personally it would've driven me nuts, especially after paying nearly £1000 for it. I never had an issue like this with my PowerBook 12"/17" or TiBook (despite its paint falling off it always worked without any strange audio glitches).

  • HT1218 Time machine power on making 5x blip sound -. and the light stays amber! What does this mean?

Appreciate helps with the above. The blip sound comes on upon restarting for the time machine stops backup my iMac (OS X). Many thanks in advance.

Both the sound and the steady amber status LED could be indicating that the internal hard drive in your Time Capsule may have failed or is about to fail.
I would recommend taking it to your local Apple Store to have them confirm. If you purchased it with an Apple computer it may still be under warranty.
If not under warranty, the other option is to temporarily remove the hard drive, place it into a drive caddy and connect it to your Mac. Then you can use the native Disk Utility or another similar utility of your choosing to fully test the disk. You may find that you can revive it via this method. If successful you can then reinstall the drive in your Time Capsule.

  • When instant streaming Netflix on my Macbook Pro, the sound is very very low even when sound controls are set at highest level.

When instant streaming Netflix on my Macbook Pro, the sound is very very low even when sound controls are set at highest level.  I do not have this problem when listening to TV or watching movies streamed from DishNetwork.  I contacted Netflix and they had me install a newer version of their software Silverlight... this did nothing to resolve the issue.  They were not familiar with the issue.

Well if your on 10.6.2, you need to software update to 10.6.8
Perhaps you need to adjust the Silverlight (Microsoft DRM video plug-in) sound level itself too
Run a check here to see if your current on your Silverlight (works for all browsers)
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
Use another browser like Firefox and see if it continues.
Try another video file. They all have their own sound levels too.

Might be corruped sound preferences ..
    Type or copy paste the following;
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Click Go the move both .plist files from the Audio folder to the Trash.
    com.apple.audioDeviceSettings.pllist
    com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
Restart your Mac. See if that made a difference ...

  • How do you turn off volume blip sound

I like to turn off that annoying volume blipping sound when I adjust via keyboard. I like to use it with PA equipment. ????

    Bill,
    Try this:
Open System Preferences>Sound and click on the Sound Effects tab.
There you'll find a check box for "Play feedback when volume is changed".
I'm running Tiger, but I think a similar setting is in Panther as well.

  • Macbook makes clicking sound

When I move my macbook, as I lift it up it often makes a clicking sound, seems to me like it's coming from the upper left corner. It sounds kind of like a plastic piece thats come loose only it's the excact same sound every time, making the plastic piece theory inlikely. This sound has been there even since i bought the computer a few months ago.
Anyone heard of this before, what's the matter with my macbook?

This sound is by design. This is the sound of your Hard Disk protection parking the heads of your disk in order to protect it from any sudden movement. Sudden movement of a Hard Drive can cause the reading heads to come into contact with the disk surface, which can potentially cause the drive to fail. This is a safety feature of the computer.
If you want, you can disable this feature. See this Apple Knowledge Base article for details:

My Macbook pro output sound has developed an echo in all applications except iTunes which plays back okay.

Boot the MBP with the OPTION key down.
The display will show two HDD icons.  Select the recovery partition (on the right).
From the 4 Option menu, select the Mavericks install option.
    Follow the directions.

  • My Macbook air laptop sound, fan and speed is messed up, how do I fix it?

Where do I start. One random day I came home to find out that my sound has been muted. I tried to fix it with headphones, reseting the PRAM, google, and even by asking my schools computer tech. Some times the mute button would disappear and the sound bar would be in color but their would still be no sound. After  the computer tech went on his account on the laptop to un-mute it, which he couldnt, he told me that my built in speakers dont work and would need to be replaced next year. Im like okay no problem, that same day i closed my laptop and found that the light was still on, I asked a friend and he said the black bar between the keypad and screen is what activates the laptop to shut off, which means its broken, so in between class periods i either shut down my laptop or put it to sleep. The next day my laptop starts to run slow and as soon as i power it on the fan runs immediately but the laptop isnt hot. My mouse moves at normal speed but my applications are running slow. This all happened in one week which is this week. My battery dies at a normal pace though.
    More information
This is a school given macbook air for a magnet program called iPrep, so i cant download anything with our administration password
This is my second laptop out of the 3 years ive been in the program. My first laptop started to break after the sound got muted and my laptop ended up with an X on the battery and would only turn on when a charger is plug but would go super slow. This makes me scared cause i dont want that happening at all to this one.
    Problems
Sound is muted, it sometimes un-mutes but there is still no sound, internal speakers broken
When closed the screen display is still open
Computer applications go slow, fan turns on immediately
Any help, this is bothering me so much

    Hi Jollified,
Does your sound work when you try to use head/earphones? If so, try the following:
Plug your Headphones into your Mac.
Play a sound through them (a song for example), then stop the sound.
Make sure 'Preferences' is isn't open. If it is, Quit.
    Launch System Preferences > Sounds.
While the Sounds tab is open and set to 'Headphones', pull out the Headphones from the jack.
You should see your Mac reset to 'Internal Speakers'
Also, I see you have tried resetting the PRAM, have you tried resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)? Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
As for your MacBook not sleeping when you close the lid, there are many reasons this can occur.
First of all, check out Apples article on the issue: OS X Yosemite: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep If you find these steps don't help, try a few of the following:
A common cause for the Mac not sleeping is your printer. If there are queued jobs waiting to be printed, but your printer is switched off, for some reason you Mac just wont like it and simply will not go to sleep. System Preferences > Print and Scan > Open Print Queue
Do you have an Ethernet Cable connected? People have reported in the past that removing their Ethernet allowed their Mac to sleep. This goes for other things you may have connected directly to your Mac also.
Try heading into your Mac Preferences > Sharing and deselecting 'Internet Sharing' as well as 'Printer Sharing'.
Also deselect Wake For Network Access by heading to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Wake For Network Access.
Energy Saver > Schedule > Startup or Wake - Uncheck.
Alternatively, set your system preferences to Never Sleep, and put into Sleep manually: System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep > Never.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook makes chirping sound? Is it a faulty hard drive?

My late 2008 macbook's hard drive makes a pretty loud chirping sound when I open the programs Pro Tools or Adobe Photoshop. The beachball pops up and the HD "chirps" and the computer freezes for around 10 minutes and then all of a sudden it starts working again with the applications running flawlessly. I have no problems when using Firefox or Preview or browsing through my files; Which makes me think that its not a problem with the HD but maybe a problem with the programs i'm running. The HD sometimes also makes the noise when i first power the computer on but it does not freeze.
btw: this has been happening for well over 2 months. I already backed up all my data a while back to an external HD just in case the HD is faulty.

It sounds like a hard drive issue. Try reformatting it using "Zero all data" option under "Security Options" in your Disk Utility.

  • Transferred a video from phone to macbook pro but sound is not working.

I transferred a video from my phone to my macbook pro. the transfer was successful but the sound is not working on the computer, totally mute. the video is playing on quicktime player. the computer sound is on. the video was working fine on the phone and when i transferred the video, if this makes any difference or anything, the phone's media volume was on full.
I very much appreciate the help and feed back, thank you!

I have this same issue and have been struggling with it for a while.  I really just need to get it into Apple Store to be fixed most likely - but avoiding the hassle and time needed to do so.
    Things I've come across:
Something inside of the headphone jack is not right, such that it randomly thinks headphones or some other type of optical audio device are plugged in.  you will see a red light inside the jack occasionally when it happens.
You might try doing PRAM and/or SMC reset ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 )

  • Why does my MacBook Pro make sounds when I put it in my bag?

I am a first time Mac user and have only had my MacBook Pro for a few weeks.  When I put it my back to carry with me to work, it makes a sound like something is running even though I have shut it down.  Can anyone help me, I dont want to mess up a great laptop.

I'd make a sound too if i was put into a bag haha.
Only thing i could think of it it has a mind of its own or your putting your computer to sleep. Try shutting down your mac before placing in your bag and see if that changes things.

  • Yosemite is messing with my new Retina Macbook Pro's sound output, help.

I just got my new Retina Macbook Pro 2 months ago and have been noticing some audio output issues. When I try to connect an external third-party audio device to run my KRK monitors my computer does not recognize the device and will not switch the audio output. After trying to set it manually my macbook won't even revert to the internal speakers for output and then I have to reboot my pro in order to get audio output again. This will happen randomly throughout the day after my computer has been in sleep as well, and sometimes the volume buttons get greyed out as well. Please help me with this issue as this is a new computer and it is becoming a nuisance. Even when connecting through HDMI, my audio output does not function and no sound will come out of the TV. I realize that this is probably a Yosemite glitch, but I just need to know if there is any fixes for this issue. Thanks so much for your time,
    Sam Migliazza
