Macbook Screen Black - won't brighten

I was using my macbook last night, and when I went to sleep, I closed my macbook and put it away, plugged in. When I woke up, it was fully charged, but when I opened it this morning, the screen was fully black and won't brighten. I restarted it and it made the noise that it makes when it starts, and for a second, the white screen with the apple showed up but then it went black again. I have it hooked up to my tv right now, and it is working fine otherwise, it just seems to be the screen that isn't working. The screen isnt completely black, It's just very dim. I can see the screen on my macbook but it is too dark to do anything, and when I try to turn the brightness up it says it is all the way up.

1. Restart.
2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Macbook screen blacking out suddenly

    Hi all,
While using my Macbook, the screen suddenly goes black.
The screen goes black apparently randomly, sometimes it does, sometimes it does not.
My Macbook is on my table, which I guess is pretty well ventilated too.
After pressing the spacebar and other keys for a while, the blacked-out screen will just go back to normal.
What is the problem? I would be glad if anyone could offer any advice.
    Thank you.

Go to system preferences, go to energy saver, at the top with the scroll down menu you can change settings for power adapter or battery, and below that option there's optimization settings. And while you are there, go into options (button beside "Sleep") and see if there's any options you may want to change as well. You may have to click the little pad lock icon at bottom left corner to make changes.
Any more questions just ask away. If you think any of the advice here are helpful you may want to click the little icon to mark each post "helpful" or "solved".

  • Macbook screen blacking out

Hey! I have a 2008 macbook, and the screen keeps blacking out whenever I open it. Any suggestions or info on how much it is to get fixed?

I have a 2009 MacBook and have the same problem!!!!!!!!!! I thought it was cause I needed to replace the battery and that did but nothing resolved the blackouting issue. I called tec supprt and they walked me through a process to see if it was the hardware. this is what they had me try: turn off it. remove the battery. press the power button for 5 second. replace the battery. connect the charger to the laptop. have someone ready to turn it on, because right after press down at the same time ( option, command, the letter r and p ) at the same time. hold them down until you hear the start up chime twice.
My Mac turned on fine and i was soooo happy that it was back to normal. I even asked to speak to his supervisor and tell him how helpful the representive was..however....I walked away from it for about 15 mins...and BOOM....back to the same poop!!!!!! i was soooo mad!!!!! and the worse part is that I am taking online classes! and so I depend on this laptop like no other! I called back and basically they told me that it seems like the backlight is going out and quoted me at $400 to replace!!!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!
It works ok when I turn it on and once I cn see the desktop with a flash light at an angle...cause its all dark....I turn up and down the brightness buttons.
If you find a solution let me know please!!!!

  • Macbook screen black in admin account

    I have a 2009 macbook running 10.6.8
today I was browing the net and out of nowhere the screen went blank. I could still hear the computer running, so I held down the power button and rebooted. grey screen came up, heard the chime, then it all went black again. turned it back off, unplugged power cord and took out battery for 60 secs. after that I was able to get the login screen and sign in, but then it went black again while logging in. removed battery again and this time I logged in as guest and it's working just fine. still can't get into my main account though. any ideas on how to fix this?

Next time this happens, can you try shining a bright light on the back of the laptop screen, near the Mac logo? This will simulate a backlight.
Then look at your screen and see if there is anything showing on the screen.
If there is something there (it will be faint and very dark), then your LCD is okay and your backlight is having issues.
If you don't see anything, then both your backlight and LCD are turning off.

  • Screen black, won't sleep, but iBook seems to be on

I haven't quite been able to find an answer to my problem on the discussion groups yet.
Two nights ago, my girlfriend was using our 900mhz G3 iBook (dual USB) running 10.3.9. She was surfing the internet and closed the screen to put it to sleep. When she went to wake it up, the screen was black and not resonding. When I got home, I could hear the fan working and the caps lock light went on when I pressed it in. If you held down the power button it seemed to power down when you turned it off and would make the power up/on sound when you turned it on. However, if you closed the lid, the sleep light would not come on.
Yesterday, I did some reading and decided to do a PMU reset when I got home. I forgot to look up how to reset the PRAM and didn't do it. Before doing the PMU reset, I took out the battery and disconnected the iBook from the power for at least a minute. Then, I reset the PMU and the computer magically came back to life without any problems.
I immediately restarted with the hardware test CD and it came up again no problem. I started the hardward tests and it made it through to memory. The Logic Board and other hardware tested fine. But when it was in the middle of testing the RAM, a weird blobby rainbowey green/purple/white/black sort of blob started moving up and down the sceen and then eventually froze as one big color changing blob.
I did a forced restart and the screen never really came back. The computer still seems to be on (the volume button works and it sounds like it's on). However, the screen is totally black. And resetting the PMU again has not worked at all.
    Any thoughts?

This seems similar to the problem that I had just a few days ago. I was typing as paper and the screen just flipped out and the computer froze. I had to do a hard shutdown and then zapped the pram and the PMU. The computer was clearly "on" but the screen was black. I took it to the apple sote and they sent it out for repair. It was the logic board that failed on mine(the logic board is a known issue and has an extended coverage on it. check this link (http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/)) That being said it is odd that when you were able to run the hardware test, the logic board was ok. My mother in law had a very similar problem to mine except when she plugged in an external monitor she could see the desktop etc. When she took hers in for her issue it was something different and not covered by the apple extended protection. Do you have an external monitor to test with?
With all of that being said your absolute best bet is to take it to apple. They will most likely have to send it to a tech center. I told them that if it was anything other than the logic board I wanted to be notified to authorize the repairs so I didn't come back with a huge bill.

  • Macbook Screen black

    Hello all,
I was loading something up on photoshop cs6 when my laptop froze then the screen went black. I turned it off and left it for half an hour charging.
When I tried to turn it back on, I heard the disk drive and all the usual noises but there's nothing on the screen.
It is still functioning because the keyboard is lit up and i've emailed myself to hear the chime, it still sounds when I press the volume keys but still the screen isn't giving me anything.
Any ideas what I can do?

Not sure if this will fix your problem, but I don't see how it can hurt. Reset the PRAM and SMC.

  • MacBook (March 2009) screen blacks out

    Hi,
I have a white MacBook (March, 2009) running Leopard, and currently
the screen keeps blacking out, even while the unit is fully connected to
power, and the battery is fully recharged overnight.  I don't even have
time to go into Settings.  I have tried closing the MacBook, and then
opening it after a while, within 2 seconds, the MacBook screen blacks
    out.
I have done a hard shut down and restart, but still have the same problem.
I've even inserted the Leopard installation CD, but still it keeps happening.
I am really worried that I will have to take it for a repair.  But is there any
    other solution?
    Thanks, Sandeep.

I tried the battery remove and reinstall procedure, and it didn't work the first time, maybe because I didn't give the battery enough rest.
I've done it a second time, and will try again in 2 or 3 hours, to see if it works.
If not, I will have to take into the service centre.
    Thanks, Sandeep.

  • MacBook screen keeps going black and won't reboot

I have a 15" MacBook Pro, Early 2011 running 10.9.2. This rather alarming problem started recently, about two weeks ago:
At random, my screen will "glitch out" and go black. This usually happens when performing some innocuous action like moving a window or opening a random app.
When in this state, the MacBook will not wake up so I have to do a hard reboot. Then the system will not make it back to the Finder. It will get to a solid gray screen, I can hear the fan ramp up and then it will shut itself down again.
The only way to reboot is to go into single user mode (command-S) and then run "/sbin/fsck -y" twice because the first run modifies my startup disk for some unreported reason. Then my MacBook will run fine for a couple hours before I have to repeat the process all over again.
I've run Apple's Hardware Test and everything came up fine. I did some research and found this old article, which describes a similar bug in the MacBook model prior to mine (late 2010), which suggests some kind of known graphics card hardware bug:
    http://www.cnet.com/news/apple-acknowledges-2010-macbook-pro-black-screen-bug/
Any solutions out there, beyond taking it to an Apple Store?
EDIT: I subsequently found this discussion, which describes the same defect:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/25002119#25002119

I've found a solution — or rather a patch. I downloaded gfxCardStatus and set it as a Startup Item. It adds an icon and menu to Mac OS X's menu bar, and from there you can tell the system to use the "Integrated Only" graphics hardware instead of "Dynamic Switching."
This apparently prevents the system from using the "Discrete Only" graphics hardware, which in my case was causing the crashes.
This patch allows all graphics-intensive apps to run on my Mac, including iPhoto, Photoshop and SketchUp.
Apple, when are you going to address this problem? Your hardware test apps failed to find any hardware problems.

  • New iPad 2 ambient sensor not working? Screen won't brighten.

At least I think that might be the problem. I have a brand new iPad 2 which is one of 48 that i've got for school. I was setting it up with 3 others using Apple configurator and it went dark and now won't brighten up.
    Running iOS 5.1
    iPad 2 Wi-fi only
    I have:
turned off (completed powered off) then on again
    reset
reset by erasing all contents and setting up afresh
    charged to full capacity
set auto-brightness off and then on again
set brightness to 100% (makes no difference) and then to 0%
On the other ipads when i set them to 0% they are still lighter/brighter than when this particular one is on 100%.
Not sure if this is a sensor problem or a brightness problem or something else.

    Dear jaredfromsewanee,
I received my iPad 2 days ago, and I just went to try and restore my iPad 2. Same problem with me, its stuck on a black screen with no Apple logo. I also get error message 1601 trying to restore to 4.3.3 from 4.3.3. I'm worried my iPad may be 'bricked' and I don't have a receipt because I won this iPad from a competition..
Also I'm running a windows machine, with iTunes up to date and I'm stressing so bad and I hope I can still salvage this thing!! Goodluck mate!!

  • When in Final Cut My MacBook Screen goes black

I was working on Final Cut on my Macbook Pro and everything was running smoothly until I used the "help" tab to find out how to freeze frame. I moused over to the drop down window to hit the command and I either clicked on it or something around it, then my screen went black. I have a dual screen and nothing happened to my external monitor. Now the weird thing is when I use any other program my Macbook screen comes back to normal. It even comes back to normal when a Final Cut prompt windows come up on the screen but as soon as I answer the prompt the screen goes back to black. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Hit command+F12 and see what happens.
It sounds like you've enabled Desktop Cinema Preview.

  • Screen blacks out after a few seconds and won't return to normal state.

I have the 30 gig ipod photo that i got about a year and a half ago. Whenever I look at the screen to access music or anything, the screen blacks out like there's a screensaver or something and won't return back to normal. Even after I reset it, it stays normal for a few seconds and then blacks out again. The backlighting still works so it's just a bright black screen and I have function of the click wheel because it clicks everytime I move up or down. I already tried restoring it so I am all out of options. Anyone PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks
    Steve

This happens rarely but consistently! I't seems to happen about 5% of the time waking from sleep. It MAY be more prone to happen if I had been moving with it in my bag, but it can happen at any waking time after any duration of sleep.

Could be the graphics card, run the Apple Hardware Test
If the hardware test doesn't reveal any problems, use Lion Recovery.

Try the suggestions here to see if they resolve your problem:

If these don't work you probably have a hardware problem. Visit an Apple store for an evaluation or contact Apple Support.
