Macbook screen goes dark (not to sleep)

So then I have to fiddle with the down (F1) and up (F2) buttons til it comes back on, then it immediately goes dark again, this happens several times a day now.
I need a new LCD screen right? I got an estimate from my local Mac repair guy, he said $150 for the screen and 50 for labor--does this sound right?
Have MacBook 13" 10.7.4. Got it 4 years ago.
Thanks!

I've been having a similar problem. I haven't found a permanent solution but I have found a work around. If you have TextExpander or Alfred this will work much faster.
I was able to use the 'pmset -g log' terminal command to find out that mDNSResponder was the reason my MBP wouldn't fall alseep. So it has something to do with Bonjour.
I then found a pair of command codes to shut off and turn on Bonjour. After using them, my MBP goes to sleep without issue.
Turn Off Bonjour: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
Turn On Bonjour: sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
You'll notice that when you turn off Bonjour that you won't be able to use the Internet. That is the only down side to this work-around.
Using Textexpander you can use 'ssleep' and 'wwake' for the two command codes and alfred can give you quick access to the terminal.
I hope that helps somewhat.

  • My MacBook screen goes dark sometimes.

I've googled this problem and there's a few people with the exact same problem and lots with similar problems, but no one is coming up with a certain answer.
It's a MacBook, running on 10.5.8, two and a half years old, 13.3 inch screen. Bought new in October 2008.
It's been happening for about a week now. The screen will randomly go dark, often when it's moved. However, sometimes I can move it and it's fine, and sometimes it goes dark when it's not being moved. Ahhh, vagueness, sorry!
Things are still on the screen if I hold it in the right light, everything seems to be running properly. Turning the brightness right down and then back up again sort of works, and if I do it around 5-10 times it "sticks". I can use the laptop for quite a while without it happening again, as if it's warmed up.
It is especially bad when I'm waking it up or switching it on. It's not more likely to happen if it's at maximum brightness, that I can see. Everything's the right colour and there's no flickering, it's just BAM everything's dark.
I don't have an external monitor to try it with, but I'm heading to a Genius bar in a couple of days to see what happens.
I went to the Apple reseller shop I bought the MacBook from, and before I told them it was out of warranty, the guy who was helping me said it looked like an inverter and/or backlight problem. When I told him that it was a common problem in MacBooks he basically laughed at me, the gitwizard.
Sooooo, has anyone else had this problem, and how did you fix it?

    Hi everyone,
I just wanted to let you all know what happened. I took the MacBook to the Genius Bar as planned, and straight away the dude told me that it was either an inverter or the backlight was broken. He said it would be much cheaper if it was the inverter (about £60), but the more expensive backlight problem was a lot more likely (£200) and I probably wouldn't be able to fix that myself. So I handed it in, and they had the part in stock, so two working days later it was ready for collection.
It turned out to be the backlight problem, and the whole thing cost me £200. My receipt says "DISPLAY, LCD, 13.3" " and the part cost £169.20.
I guess if you felt like tackling this at home, you'd have to feel confident enough to repair it yourself. Always try the inverter first, because it's cheaper and easier. Then if it didn't work, I guess try to replace the display. He told me that you can't replace just the backlight, it's got to be the whole display. If someone else has more techy knowledge than me and has found a way to replace just the backlight then cool!
    I hope this helps someone.

  • MacBook Air Boots to OS, then screen goes dark.

I have recently been working on an older style (A1304) MacBook Air with the 128GB SSD. I've been working on Mac's for years, and have worked on hundreds, but this is the first time I've ever come across this particular issue.
Liquid damaged MacBook Air. Keyboard and Trackpad mainly took the brunt of the spill. Popped off the keys, cleaned it all up. Button for the trackpad no longer works, but everything else does. Entire computer was disassembled, no other liquid was found.
MacBook Air boots up normally, and I was using it for a few hours to make sure everything was working fine. Left it to charge. Came back two hours later, and the screen was dark (but the image was still visible, as if the backlight was not on). Could see the mouse pointer moving, but backlight won't come back on. Turned off computer, turned it back on. Backlight works just fine, and it boots to the OS. Within 10 seconds of booting to OS, the screen goes dark (screen goes completely black with no image). Couple seconds later, light on the front starts to "breathe" indicating it's sleeping. Wake it back up, and image appears on the screen, but no backlight. Then it "goes to sleep" again.
Boot computer to a Flash Drive with Snow Leopard Installer and once the blue screen comes on as if the installer is just about to pop up, it "goes to sleep" immediaetly. Though, the backlight and computer will stay on in the Apple Hardware Test for as long as I want. (ran it several times, "no trouble found". Also reset the PRAM, nothing helps.
I was wondering if anyone has ever come across this. Completely baffled on whether it's a software or hardware (or combination of the both) issue I'm having.

The keyboard and trackpad reside on top of the motherboard and all the components of the computer.  The keyboard and trackpad are not liquid proof.  It is VERY likely that the liquid made its way to the motherboard and has affected those components.  If EVER there is liquid spilled on a computer, the last thing you want to do is A. Turn it on to make sure it is working.. and B. Plug it in and charge it.  Do the EXACT opposite.  Unplug and turn off all power, and, if possible, remove the battery from it.  The liquid itself doesnt do the damage...the damage is done when the liquid comes in contact with the circuits and shorts out the contacts and components.  You could try to connect to an external monitor, if you have the means to do so, to see if it makes a difference, but it probably will not.  I seems that the motherboard is not functioning correctly.

  • Connecting battery = MacBook goes dark and to sleep

I have a black Macbook 2.4 GHz. It was purchased refurb from the Apple store site and has recently exhibitted some strange behavior surrounding the battery. Sometimes the screen just goes dark and the MacBook goes to sleep. Usually a restart corrects the issue.
Tonight, it's doing it all the time. I came home and opened the MacBook (it had been sleeping) and within a minute the screen went dark as if the brightness was turned all the way off and then it went to sleep. I finally got it shut down and the long and short of it is that it works fine with just the power adapter plugged in, but as soon as I connect a battery the screen goes dark and the MacBook sleeps. My initial thought was bad battery but I tried another known working battery from the same model MacBook and the same thing happened. As soon as the contacts touch, dark screen and sleep.
I've reset the SMC twice, zapped the PRAM and even repaired the disk permissions just for fun.
Luckily, I'm under AppleCare but can't really get to an Apple Store (or even find the time to spend on the phone) until Monday so I thought I'd post here to get some guesses. My thought is logic board, because, well, what else could it be!
Thanks in advance for any help or even wild speculation!

Same behavior continues once battery has been removed and macbook is running off the power adapter.

  • My macbook 3.1 screen goes dark after a period of use; but if i readjust the screen (close it to about a 30 degree angle) the screen light is on again

my macbook 3.1 screen goes dark after a period of use; but if i readjust the screen (close it to about a 30 degree angle) the screen light is on again.  i don't have an external monitor, so i just deal with it.  i'm about done dealing with it and am wondering if anyone else had/has this problem, and how did you solve it?

You have a hardware problem. It needs to be fixed.
Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.

When i am on a call, the screen goes dark within a few seconds so that i cant easily get back to the keyboard, the screen that allows me to go on speakerphone etc. Is this normal? Also, is there any way to adjust the number of rings before the call goes to voicemail? Thanks.

  • IBooks screen goes dark while reading

When reading in iBooks or Kindle, screen goes dark after 1/2 page or so. Any ideas?

    Hello there, tiamark.
The following page from the iPad User's Guide refers to the Auto-lock feature. You may want to increase the auto-lock time frame, in order for the iPad not to shut down while you are reading your books:
Sleep/Wake button - iPad User Guide
    http://help.apple.com/ipad/7/#/iPad9940ef67
Set the auto-lock time. Go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock.

  • Edge 540 model : when I connect/disconnect AC power cord, screen goes dark

For the past few days, everytime I connect the power cord, the screen goes dark for a second. The same thing happens when I disconnect the power cord. Can someone help me find out what is wrong with it? Is it a hardware issue or is it just a momentary glitch (It just started happening yesterday)?
My laptop is brand new so I can use the warranty if i have to.
    OS: Win 8
    Thank you.

this is a normal behaviour it happens all the time. It is your refresh rate changing between different power setting. Set the screen refresh rate at 60 hz for both battery and with ac adapter connected this should prevent the momentary blanking of the lcd.

  • 700P Sprint Update 1.10 - Screen goes dark after sync

I updated my Sprint 700P yesterday to V1.10 Palm software.  All seemed to go well with the update, until I tried to restore my data with a HotSync.
The sync seems to go  normally, but at the end, it says a "reset is necessary"...after the reset, the screen goes dark right after the Palm logo appears.  The phone seems to be still working.....just no visible screen.
I spent hours on this yesterday....now have no working phone.....very frustrated.
    Warren C.
Post relates to: Treo 700p (Sprint)

    Yes
i just replaced my 700p due to this issue and return home to find that nothing has been resolved.
It turns out that the update is rather seriously flawed. There is no way to revert the update so, Verizon (after checking with Palm) replaced my Treo and suggested that I not run the update again.
Now the sync issue that you describe.
There appears to be files associated with your treo on the Palm software on your desktop that are set for installation. This was due to the update i believe. These files: specifically those associated with AudibleAir.pdb are creating havoc during the sync.
The Work-around that Palm suggested to me which appears to work (on the new phone with the original ROM) is as follows:
    1) Hard Reset the Treo
    2) Re-sync the treo
!> When it asks you to choose the correct id, DO NOT DO SO!!!
    3) Create a new ID for the treo and continue the sync.
This way these bad files are no longer set for installation because you are not using the same account as when you ran the update utility.
I would be interested to know if this works with a Treo 700p with the new ROMs installed.
My method requires the old ROMS and Palm in its infinite wisdom has not created any means of rolling back to the old ones. Thus a catastrophic update.

  • 6288 - screen goes dark after 15 seconds

    Hi
Have just purchased a 6288. Screen goes dark after 10 - 15 seconds if you don't touch the keypad - very annoying if reading a message. Have turned Power saver and sleep mode off, but screen still goes dark. Does anyone know how to stop it from doing this?
    Thanks

Yes it is quite annoying. The screen saver time out does little to remedy this. A way around it that I use is to reassign the navikeys. you can dictate what each button does :go to menu > settings > my shortcuts > navigation key. my up goes to contacts, left goes to new message, right goes to music player and down does nothing. so every time the screen goes black, I just hit the down key to turn it back on.
