Macbook screen is black

MacBook 2007 starts up to black screen.
When plugged into external monitor, it shows the native startup screen without menu bar, icons, or dock.
The pointer shows and responds to the mouse, but there is nothing to click on.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Shut down, then disconnect the external display.
First step would be to reset the parameter RAM.
Second, if that does not fix it, would be to reset the System Management Controller.
Third, try booting into the Startup Manager by holding down the option key during startup. Is there any video at all now?
If there is no video by this point, you have a hardware issue. Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.

Could be the graphics card, run the Apple Hardware Test

  • When in Final Cut My MacBook Screen goes black

I was working on Final Cut on my Macbook Pro and everything was running smoothly until I used the "help" tab to find out how to freeze frame. I moused over to the drop down window to hit the command and I either clicked on it or something around it, then my screen went black. I have a dual screen and nothing happened to my external monitor. Now the weird thing is when I use any other program my Macbook screen comes back to normal. It even comes back to normal when a Final Cut prompt windows come up on the screen but as soon as I answer the prompt the screen goes back to black. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Hit command+F12 and see what happens.
It sounds like you've enabled Desktop Cinema Preview.

    Hello @bobbiy58,
I understand that your HP ENVY Recline 27-k150xt TouchSmart All-in-One CTO Desktop PC is going black for few seconds and coming back. I need to ask has this just started? Like since you connected your X-box? If so have you tried disconnecting the X-box to see if it stops?

  • Macbook screen stays black

I opened my Macbook today and it made the usual sound, but the screen stays black. What can I do? Thanks in advance.

Hi iNonna and welcome to Apple Discussions!
So you got the usual startup chime but no video during or after startup, is that right?
I would start out by [resetting the System Management Controller|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964]. If there is no video after that, it sounds like you need to take the MacBook in for a repair. You don't say where you are but you can contact Apple for a repair at one of the phone numbers on [this page|http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html] or carry it in to an Apple retail store. Be sure to [make an appointment|http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist> first or you may spend a long time waiting to talk to a Mac Genius.
    Best of luck.

See this Apple note on starting with no video.

  • Mid 2007 Macbook screen goes black when not in clamshell mode

Worked like a charm until I started using my mini DVI adapter to hook it up to an external monitor. Now machine won't display anything (just a black screen) when its not hooked up to the adapter. Has to be a display issue since It will still boot and everything (I can tell because the sound and brightness controlls work), it just displays a black screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike.

Your caches may be corrupted. Try a Safe Boot by pressing the Shift key. You should see a progress bar. It's important to let this Safe Boot run its course without interruption; otherwise, you can trash the file system badly enough to require a restore from backup. (Been there, done that. Lesson learned!)

  • Screen went black during migration from time machine backup

Just did a clean install of Mavericks on my wife's 3-year old MacBook Air. I erased the hard disk first from the Recovery drive. Then did the Maverics install.  All went well.  Then I started a Time Machine migration from a back up I had on a Toshiba HD.  Everything started well showing about a 2 hour back up time, but about 1 hour into the migration, the MacBook screen went black.  I couldn't get it to go on, so I did a hard reboot of the system.  I've had to start the migration again, but not I'm concerned the same thing will happen.
Any ideas what is going on?

You can also go to System Preferences/Energy Saver and set Display sleep to never until you are done, then reset it.

  • White macbook boots to black screen?

I have a 2006 white macbook with the 2.0ghz core 2 duo processor. It boots well and runs fast most of the time, but sometimes after i press the power button instead of the screen becoming white with the apple logo etc. it just stays black. the fans run and i can hear activity within the laptop but the screen is black.
I usually hold down the power button and try to boot it up again. It works the second time generally, but sometimes I have to do that 3-5 times before it works and boots flawlessly to the desktop.
I have also tried re-seating the LCD cable via ifixit's guide, but it didn't help.
    thanks,

If you are in proximity of an Apple Store with Genius Bar, you could schedule
an appointment or reservation for a genius or specialist to look into the matter.
Depending on your location and global region, this may or may not be free
but is worthwhile to diagnose and test the Mac to discover what is wrong...
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider
    Visit an Apple Retail Store
In several locations, the above may vary; in the US and Canada, [among other
regions, some Apple Stores may not] offer a diagnostic as a free service...
So depending on where you are you could check into this; the diagnostic test
and Genius bar is free even with an older Mac out of warranty in US/Canada.
If there is no Apple Store with Genius bar, you can check into seeing an AASP
or Authorized Apple Service Provider, where customary charges may apply.
These AASP locations may be able to repair older Macs the Apple Store is
unlikely to; so if you have vintage or obsolete gear, that's another matter out
side of the Genius. Specialist Independent repair services can also help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse.  I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze.  When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally.  Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine.  But there are blue stripes on my screen.  The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes.  I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer.  If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed.  I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this?  Is it the firmware or what?  I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them  the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

  • MacBook 13.3" (A1181), 2.16 GHz, screen goes black once OS is loaded.

I have a MacBook 13 (model A1181, 2.16 GHz) that I bought from a friend.  Everything starts up fine, I get the chime, etc., until it loads the OS.  I have a brand new Apple hard drive; brand new Mac OS X Leopard disk; and have tried everything I can think of.  I have tried shining a light to see if the screen is just dim--no dice.  I have tried completely wiping the drive clean on my iMac and then reinstalling.  It gets all the way through the install, then the screen goes black when I'm trying to set my information up.  The screen stays up if it's installing the OS, and also if I have the hard drive disconnected on the logic board.  As soon as I load the OS, it goes black.  The rest of the machine is still running.  I have a spare logic board, so I put that in and I get the same problem.  What am I missing?  Any help would be appreciated.  It may be useful to know that I am a computer repair technician (I do component repairs at a motherboard/logic board level).  However, I believe all the hardware to be working.  I think it may be a firmware issue, but I can't get it to keep a screen long enough to do any software updates.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I actually considered that and replaced the inverter, as I couldn't find the cord to external display, but also to no avail.  Same thing happened.

  • Macbook Pro 13" Screen went Black - Can only see when plugged into another display! HELP!

My MacBook Pro's screen went black last night and now when it turns on it stays black. I plugged it into my tv through the mini display port and I can see everything fine on the tv but the screen on my laptop is black. Everything else seems to be working fine. Any advice that doesn't involve taking to Genius Bar??? Already tried booting in safe mode, resetting the PRAM and NVRAM. Need to fix this ASAP. Thanks!!

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • MacBook Pro screen goes black when video is blown up on the second screen

I'm not sure if this is a problem but when I open up a video in fullscreen mode on my second display, the screen on my MacBook goes completely black and I cannot access anything on the my MacBook until I restore the video to windowed mode. Is there any way I can fix this?
Just to add, I can still see my cursor on the MacBook's screen, but there are no menus or docks on there, and I can see my notifications, but other than that, if I attempt to switch tasks and say open up Safari, the safari window on my MacBook will be black, while the video on the secondary monitor is in fullscreen mode.

Obviously there's a bad connection in there. Best bet is to take it back to the GB and show them how it happens.

  • I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a projector, which has a VGA cable. I bought a VGA to HDMI adapter, but whenever I hook it up, the screen on my macbook just goes black and I can't make it do anything else or even show up on the projector.

I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a projector, which has a VGA cable. I bought a VGA to HDMI adapter, but whenever I hook it up, the screen on my macbook just goes black and I can't make it do anything else or even show up on the projector.
My laptop is still on; it just has a black screen that I can't get rid of without shutting down the computer by holding the power button.

    Hey there lynmrigg,
It sounds like have an HDMI to VGA adapter connecting your MacBook Pro and your projector but the screen on your computer goes black and no image appears on the projector. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve or isolate the issue here, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling
