MacBook screen woes

Greetings,
I have a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook that has a video issue. It was starting up but when it got to the blue screen, the video output died and the computer appeared to go to sleep. The first time I plugged in a monitor to check what was happening, there was no monitor output while it initially booted up, but there was the usual spinning grey 'wheel' on the laptop screen. But when the blue screen came up, the laptop screen died but the monitor came to life???
After restarting it now shows the boot process but there is no output on the laptop screen???
I have reset the PMU, the PRAM and replaced the memory, thinking there was a problem with the memory which is shared with the graphics card, that was causing the problem.
Any other ideas? I guess it COULD be used on a screen, but it sort of defeats the purpose of it being a laptop.

Noticed another thing. I needed to borrow the Video adaptor which I knew was working and swopped them over. When I removed the adaptor, the monitor obviously died but the screen came back up on the laptop for a second or two before reverting back to black. When I replace the adaptor, the monitor initially wouldn't power back on, but a press of the space bar bought it to life. Nothing on the laptop screen?

  • My MacBook screen is stuck in "presentation" mode after using my "Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter." How can I fix this?

My MacBook screen is stuck in "presentation" mode (I don't know the correct term) after using my Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter - meaning the screen fonts and windows are larger than usual. How can I fix this? I've changed the display settings to modify it a little, but it still doesn't look right. I reinserted the adapter numerous times and restarted my computer, it still hasn't worked. Help!

  • Help--why has MacBook screen gone dark and how do I get it back?

I have a  MacBook (model 4,1  running OS 6.8).  I use the MacBook as my desktop computer in conjunction with a separate desktop monitor. Today, when I unplugged a USB hub from one of the ports (after carefully ejecting anything on the desktop that needed to be ejected before unplugging), the screen on the MacBook--not the separate monitor--suddenly went dark.  I thought it had gone to sleep or into screensaver mode, but noticed that the white light on the MacBook also wasn't showing.
The separate monitor display (on which I'm typing this message) seems fine.  I checked DIsplays/Arrangement in System Preferences, but both displays were detected in their usual arrangement, though I did notice that the working display has a white bar across the top but the MacBook display doesn't have one.  I clicked "Detect Displays," but that didn't change anything.
I then did a restart, and things seemed to go as usual:  the shutdown went okay and on restart, the white light went on on the MacBook and the monitor screen lit up normally.  However, the MacBook's screen is still dark and the white light is off.
Can anyone tell me why this happened and how to get my MacBook screen back?  I don't know whether unplugging the hub caused the problem or whether it was just a coincidence that something that runs the MacBook display happened to fail right then.  Would appreciate any help out there very much--thanks!
PS: Just tried shutting down and powering on again with the separate monitor unplugged, but the MacBook screen still stays black and the white light shuts off as soon as the desktop loads.  When I plugged the separate monitor back in, it worked fine.  So the problem doesn't seem to be a conflict with the separate monitor (which I've used for years).

Update:  I went away for an hour, and when I came back I saw that the white light had gone on as usual when the MacBook went to sleep.  When I touched the keyboard, both displays went on; however, the MacBook display went dark immediately and the white light is still out.

  • How can I mirror my macbook screen to the Apple TV through wifi?

I cannot seem to be able to mirror my macbook screen via wifi to the Apple TV. It only works with my iPad 2. Is there a solution now or in the future?

You can't.  And the lag/delay would be so bad that it could be large.  But I'd take your question to the AppleTV forum to see if someone has a solution.  But the bigger question is, why????  Just mirror the MacBook directly to the TV?

  • When in Final Cut My MacBook Screen goes black

I was working on Final Cut on my Macbook Pro and everything was running smoothly until I used the "help" tab to find out how to freeze frame. I moused over to the drop down window to hit the command and I either clicked on it or something around it, then my screen went black. I have a dual screen and nothing happened to my external monitor. Now the weird thing is when I use any other program my Macbook screen comes back to normal. It even comes back to normal when a Final Cut prompt windows come up on the screen but as soon as I answer the prompt the screen goes back to black. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Hit command+F12 and see what happens.
It sounds like you've enabled Desktop Cinema Preview.

Could be the graphics card, run the Apple Hardware Test
If the hardware test doesn't reveal any problems, use Lion Recovery.

  • Working on an external monitor as well as the macbook screen

    Hello,
When working on an external monitor as well as the macbook screen is there anyway you can have the top bar (with file, edit ect) on the second monitor also?
Im using a macbook with mountain lion if that helps.
    Many thanks,
    Chris

    Yes.
System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement Tab
Then one of the monitors should be displaying this screen:
You can put your cursor on that white bar (shown on the blue box to the left) and drag it over to the right if that is where you want the menu bar.
I have mine set up here with my external monitor to the left and the MBPro to the right with my Menu Bar on my external screen as shown by the white bar being on top of the left blue square above.
    Hope this helps.
    Update:
I misread your question I believe.
If you want the menu bar to be on BOTH screens at the same time you need to have Mirror Displays checked so that the same image is on both screens. That is the only way.

Do you see anything on the TV?
If you just see your desktop, then your MacBook is defaulting to extended display mode. Try pressing the Command + F1 keys to see if you get the menu bar and other icons.

  • Out  to TV causes lines on macbook screen

When I output to my TV using the Apple adapter, and as soon as I launch Front Row, my Macbook screen becomes nothing but lines, horizontally. The TV looks fine and I can watch it.
This also happens if I'm connected to my TV and use VLC.
After this happens the only way for e to get my macbook screen working again is to unplug the adapter.
I also noticed that once I get the screen back Front Row, even though it's been exited, still is using 99% of my processor.
So I guess what I'm saying is 'mirroring' my screen doesn't work.
    Never had this problem before.
    Thanks for any input.

I'd guess that you are experiencing the same problem detailed in this forum discussion:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2402283&tstart=0
Evidently, the last update to Snow Leopard, 10.6.3, has caused this problem. The solution is to switch back to 10.6.2.

  • External Display Causing MacBook Screen Edge Darkening?

I recently purchased a Dell 2209WA monitor (rotated to portrait) and since using it I've noticed that my MacBook screen has a shadow down the right hand side.
Now I'm assuming that some part of this new monitor isn't suitably shielded and is affecting my MacBook screen.
I need to know whether this is causing any permanent damage or if it might be an issue with cables rather than the monitor itself?

I'm a total idiot. It was late, but I'm an idiot all the same.
Turns out the drop shadow from maximised applications crosses monitors...

  • Macbook screen goes blank depending on its angle?

My macbooks screen goes blank unless it is at a specific angle, is this a cable problem and how much to get repaired?

While it's impossible to diagnose a hardware problem online it is more than likely a bad inverter cable. Go to www.ifixit.com and look up the repair tutorial to see if you'd rather do it yourself.
