MacBook Security

Can anyone recommend a good program, free or otherwise, that would aid in tracking down or locating my laptop in the event, God forbid, that someone might steal it.
TIA

I am using LoJack from Absolute:
http://www.absolute.com/public/homeoffice/computer-security-software.asp
I tried Undercover, but they did not post any stats on recoveries and they are not located in the US. Lojack seems to have lots of positve feedback and located in US.
Either one should be ok.

  • Stolen(gone) Macbook security

    Hi,
some $#@! stole my 2 macbooks from my car this week. i am curious about the lost data's safety. i know that i cant get them back but i am afraid that the thief might be capable of using the 100s of logins saved.
so, they were both running on SL . logins were with password.
    i know that with a leopard dvd you can bypass/change the login password. but even if they can login, without authentication of the keychain(i think you would not be changing the keychain password from the dvd login) can they access the data of these;
    transmit,
1password (always asked for the master password password of its own on app launch),
firefox(passwords were secured with a main password)
it s an urgent situation for me, i d be glad if some of you guys can help me out.
    thanks in advance.

by the sound of it you should probably be fine so long as you didn't write the passwords in open text anywhere. anywhere in the emails? I don't use transmit but all the other things you mention: keychain, 1password and firefox passwords are encrypted. in firefox you need to set the master password but you have done so. one question. did you have automatic login turned on?

  • WRT55AG and Macbook security issues

Hi... I currently have the WRT55AG which is connected to a PC and cable modem.  I also have a macbook laptop.  The combo has been somewhat smooth for almost a year (just a few power cycles a month).
A few days ago the macbook stopped picking up the router.  Power cycles didn't help.  I decided to reboot the router and install the latest firmware.  I've spent HOURS trying to reconfigure everything.
For some reason, my macbook won't connect to the router with WPA settings, both TKIP and AES.  I finally got it to work with the security set on WEP, 128bit encryption and with a key that the router generated.
After reading a few postings, a lot of people suggest WPA for maximum security.  Is there anything I can do to make my macbook work with WPA or is it a lost cause?   Is it really THAT big of a deal?  I'm just glad I finally got my macbook working after about 4-5 HOURS of fooling with all this!
    Thanks for reading. =)

So i assume that you have already Resetted your Router and Re-configured all the settings on your router back again. Have you created a New Wireless Network Name or stil the same Old SSID. If the SSID is still old, may you can create a New Wireless Network Name  and try connecting to that network.
If required you can remove all the Prefered Network list from your MAC computer and later you can try connecting to your Wireless Network using WPA security and check if you are able to go online or not.

  • MacBook security settings for Firefox3 ?

Firefox 3 is so slow to load some pages and refuses to load others that Safari does instantly almost. I had no problem with FF2 at all and preferred it to Safari. I have been told to check the security settings as these could be a possible answer but am not sure what I am meant to be looking for ? The firewall is on, as it always is and file sharing is off....anything else to look at ?
    Thanks

fwiw i ditched ff3 and reverted to ff2 due to various problems
unless you have a need for some exta feature in ff3 i'd suggest switch back to ff2 until ff3 matures a bit more

  • MacBook Security Software

Is there any software that when a MacBook is stolen it takes a picture of the thief with the isight and as soon as they connect to the internet sends the information (picture, ip address, etc) for tracking? Thought I read this somewhere. Any help is appreciated.
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    "Undercover" is most excellent:
    How it works
Upon installation, you'll receive an Undercover ID that's unique for the Mac you are installing Undercover on.
When your Mac is online, Undercover checks our database every six minutes to verify whether the Mac it is running on is in our database of stolen Macs. If it's not, nothing happens and no data will be transfered from your Mac to our server.
As soon as your Mac is stolen, you send us the Undercover ID you received upon registration. We will add this code to our database of stolen Macs.
The next time your stolen Mac goes online it will notice that its Undercover ID is included in our database of stolen Macs. This will initiate the first phase, in which Undercover will send both network information and screenshots of your stolen Mac. The network information enables us to work with the network administrators of the ISP the thief is connected to. Since ISPs consider computer theft as network abuse, they will uncover the thief's identity. Together with law enforcement, we work to recover the Mac.
Undercover will take pictures silently with iSight and send iSight pictures of the thief. Think of it as running Photo Booth in the background.
    Plan B
If law enforcement fails to recover the stolen Mac, Undercover switches to plan B. In this mode, Undercover will simulate a screen failure, slowly making the Mac's screen unusable.
The thief has two options: to send the computer to a reseller for repair, or to get rid of it by selling it on the Net. In either case, Undercover will show a full-screen message alerting the reseller or someone who bought the Mac from the thief that the Mac has been stolen, that it has become unusable and that it needs to be returned as soon as possible. Our contact information and a promise for a finder's fee (which will be covered by us) will be displayed as well. This message can be fully customized by the user and when dismissed, this message will instantly reappear. Additionally, your Mac will start shouting at the highest volume level, using its built-in text-to-speech capabilities. You can decide when Undercover switches to plan B and what message is displayed. Note that this message is NOT displayed to the thief.
    Recovery
Because of the message Undercover displays, technicians will quickly notice that the Mac has been stolen. As soon as you get back your Mac, we will remove it from our database of stolen Macs. Your Mac will immediately start to behave normally, as if nothing happened. Undercover can not be disabled by the thief. If you install Apple's firmware password, your Mac can not be formatted without knowing your firmware password.
    ALSO: TheftSensor
TheftSensor is an innovative application designed to protect your MacBook. It can be enabled by pressing the Play button on the Apple Remote. From then on, the application uses the built-in sudden motion sensor to detect any movement your MacBook will make and it will start an alert as soon as your Mac is moved or lifted, or when someone closes the lid. While TheftSensor does not cover any possible scenario, it's a great addition to Undercover and to a physical lock. The application is currently in public beta and it's totally free.
    Undercover is $30.

  • How do I keep my macbook secure since Apple is not longer providing security updates for Mac OS X 10.5?

I just found out that Apple is no longer providing security updates on Mac OS X 10.5. What can I do to keep my comupter safe? I bought my laptop in Sept. '08 and I am not inclined to fork over a couple of thousand dollars when I have a perfectly functioning laptop. Any advise out there? Thnx

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Here's a 100% effective (though not necessarily practical) solution:
Never connect your computer to the internet, never insert a disc or flash drive from anyone else, never purchase any new software, and use the computer to write and print only actual letters, never connect to email.
Your computer will continue to function as it does now until it wears out, without being vulnerable to any new security threats out there, and will continue to work just fine on OS X 10.5 without any future security measures.
On a side note, I have a 16-year-old car I spent thousands of dollars to purchase new, but I've been driving it on the metal rims for a while now, because I'm not inclined to fork over money for tires, when I have an otherwise perfectly functioning car.
Then there are alternatives that cost money:
Purchase and install an antivirus program and keep it updated.
Upgrade your computer memory and hard disk if necessary so you can install OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard', or OS X 10.7 'Lion'  Snow Leopard is still supported by Apple for the moment, but support and security updates for 10.6 will likely be discontinued soon after OS X 10.8 'Mountain Lion' ships later this year.
Even though we want computers to be assets that retain or increase in value over time, the economic reality is that computers are best thought of as commodities and/or consumables that depreciate, become obsolete, and wear out, like cars, tires, and batteries. A restored 1965 Mustang Convertible, and a 2012 Mustang Convertible probably cost about the same. Which one is much safer, much faster, rides much better, and gets much better fuel mileage?
Your computer WILL be worth less five years after you purchase it than the day you bought it. The mechanical parts (hard disk) will eventually wear out. The microprocessor inside yours operates at perhaps 1/4th the maximum speed of the slowest current model. The latest video chipsets provide huge performance gains over 2008 technology. But if your current computer truly meets all your needs, then indeed there is no reason to update or upgrade.
If you're using your computer in business, a 2008 model is fully depreciated in 5 years (this year) and it's time to consider a new purchase.  In the US, IRS Publication 946 will get you started: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p946.pdf

  • Stolen Macbook found with Prey, only files, NOT folders, are missing

Prey worked perfectly to get the cops to go to the thief's house!
My Macbook Air OS X Lion is safe now. All the programs I installed are still there, and my folders are still exactly in the same positions. Even the subfolder in a folder I named my ebooks is still in the same position at the bottom of the finder window. The folders are untouched but anything that is a file is gone. It doesnt seem to be a reformat because my programs that are meant to run (BOINC) in the background still start up and the folders would be gone.
How is this possible? Is it possibly a feature of Prey or Macbook security that I have misread? I cannot find it.
Even my Dropbox was made empty and my wallpaper was blank because the image file was gone. Desktop empty too but my organization structure for the comics and icons I collect are in tact.

Thanks. Thats what I thought too but I found it so strange that dozens of my folders were empty, even folders inside folders were still there, but no folder has been deleted. It would take a really long time to only delete files inside folders, but not my folders. Like I divided my internet collections stuff into postsecrets and deviantarts, which had smaller folders by category. These were all empty but still there. How could he have deleted like this?

  • Macbook crashed after software update and won't reboot!

I have installed the latest updates on my 2.16Ghz, 10.5 Leopard, 1Gb MacBook through the software updater. There were 10 new udates inluding iTunes, Macbook security update and some for logic Pro.
The machine crashed with the 'hold the power button' type message which i did! after switching the machine back on, it boots into the Mac OSX setup assistant, so i assume i have lost my data? However, even if i enter all my details and complete the assistant, after clicking 'done', the assistant runs again!!!
I have applecare but they're now closed so i thought i'd see if anyone can help me out as i need it up and running asap.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • My 2011 Macbook Pro OSX 10.8.4 latest update won't connect to secured Wi-fi

    2011 Macbook Pro
    OSX 10.8.4 latest updates
Suddenly stopped connecting to any wireless network which is secured, WEP/WPA/WPA2/personal/enterprise all do NOT work.
Connects to unsecured networks just fine.
For example, our wireless password is:
    123456890!
I tried with WPA2, no luck.
Tried with WPA2 and pw 1234567890, no luck.
Tried with WPA and pw 1234567890!, no luck.
Tried with WPA and pw 1234567890, no luck.
Tried WEP with 1234567890, no luck.
Tried with NO SECURITY on this wi-fi network, connected right away.
-I did reset PRAM, no luck.
-I deleted from Keychain, no luck.
-I added as prefered network and removed, no luck.
-I added new network location, no luck.
-I removed the Wi-fi network adapter, rebooted, activated, no luck.
-In the mac console logs, all I see are "wlEvent: en1 en1 link DOWN" when I try to connect to my secured wireless network (home or my office or even at a neighbors).
    -Wireless diagnostics tell me nothing
-Console logs do not tell me anything
-Warranty is expired and no AppleCare
Seems like a bug to me, even though I have tried with a Netgear, Cisco/Linksys, D-Link router and even tried tethering to a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and iPhone 5, all same problem, says "Connection failed."
    APPLE FRIENDS HELP ME PLEASE!

For example, our wireless password is: 123456890!
Well a password that weak will get cracked in about 6 hours on just about any PC in the area.
Now: LKUY*&T&67NH(*JKÎM<PijriuÎÓyhm8t, that's a real good network password, even a huge botnet would have trouble cracking that. I know because my router was PING flooded by the Flashback botnet and survived.
After OS X is reinstalled over itself to fix it, you might have to do more as it could be a "in user account" issue with a corrupted preference file, bad users permissions or another cause that's not OS X

  • Data security on Macbook Pro 13.3 2.26gHtz

    Hi Experts,
I made the recent switch from Windozzz to Macbook Pro and I am loving it every bit although I am totally new to the OS. I have some basic questions.
    1. How do we secure our data in Mac. I the sense, lets say i have 100 images and some files. There is something called as encription under Security. I enabled that, set a master password. My question is that lets say for some reason, I have to take the laptop to the service center and leave it there, will they be able to view all my personal files? Is there a way to secure our data so that the service people cannot view them? Or is that functionality not available on Mac OS.
    2. I noticed a significant difference in colors if I use the color RGB. The web images look fine if I use sRGB. IS that the common practice for other users as well? The colorRGB looks too yellow and grainy.
    thanks in advance!
    Cheers,
    Sunil

Create an encrypted disk image, and store your secure files there. Those are encrypted with 256-bit AES (theoretically unbreakable, at least for now).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1578
(Note - be sure to UNcheck the box to store the password in the keychain, and then never forget that password, or the data are gone).
For the internal display, you should use the Color LCD display profile (the only one that shows up if you check the box to 'Show profiles for this display only'. Using a 'canned' profile for another type of monitor will generally not give good results. Alternatively, click the Calibrate button and customize your calibration.

I have Microsoft Office 2004 on my MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).  It is currently up to date with Microsoft updates.  I am running Mac OS 10.6.8.  I just updated my Mac software with "Security Update 2012-001".  I am now unable to print (Epson NX510 printer) from Excel or Word.  When I click on the Print menu item in Excel, there is a flash in the background like it is trying to open the print window, but nothing else.  I am able to print from other programs like TextEdit, Mail or KakeidaGraph.  As far as I know I have the latest Epson print driver.
Also, I am also unable to open an existing Excel or Word file from the open menu - both programs lock up and do not respond.  I have to force quit.  After I restart Excel or Word I can open an existing file by double clicking on the file, but if I again try to open another file from the open menu, Excel or Word lock up.
    Any similar problems?

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.
