MacBook seems to run hot

My new MacBook Pro seems to run hot.  Only have Safari with one window and Finder running.  Is this normal?

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Also, it helps to tell us what the temperatures are because we don't know what you mean by "hot."

  • Macbook seems to run very hot with safari and very slow on other users

    Hi,
My macbook has been running hot with the fan on full boar recently. Through some deduction I've realised that is safari 4 making this happen? What would be causing this? Also since a similar time my wife's log in has been running really slow. She never installs anything and hasn't got admin rights?
Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thanks

    HI, Weaver@Swampfoot
this might be due to graphics - depending on the websites you are surfing to. try to check whether the temperature goes down if you close windows with graphics/video content; some news-sites cause my MB heating up with the for me unwanted advertisements, which i close as fast as they open.
on the other hand, it might be something else. open "Activity Monitor" (under Utilities), click "CPU", make sure that you have "all Processes" enabled (in the choser-window above the tabel). This gives you a list of all processes running, ordered according to their cpu use. please, note the ones which have highest cpu values, and report back.

  • New MBP seems to run hot & fan runs almost all the time

I've had my MBP for just about a week now. It's the new, 15", 2.2 GHz model. It's great, but I notice that it runs hotter than my Powerbook G4 did and the fan is almost always on. It's presently sitting on a wooden topped table. My house is not AC-ed, but the air temp is about 70 F/21 C today. Seems to run hot in my AC-ed faculty office too, when I am there. What is "normal" for this machine. TIA.

    David,
Ditto what Ned says. To be sure, 80 C is not too hot (it is the temp that the MBP is designed to maintain as a working maximum), but that you are experiencing this temp at all times indicates that something is pushing the processor at all times.
That is not normal. As has been suggested, have a look at Activity Monitor. If you are not doing anything of any consequence at the time, your CPU usage should be very, very low, and processes that you see using CPU intermittently (there will be many of these processes) should only use a small percentage when they use any at all.

  • 2008 macbook pro fan runs hot

My mac runs really hot, is there something I can update in the OS to help fix this? The monitor is starting to separate from the back (seriously) form the heat. I use my mac a LOT and I have two small kids so it's been bumped around a few times, so who knows if that had something to do with it and I plan to take it to apple to have it looked at (after I back it up this week) but was wondering if there was a fix for it running hot. It almost burns my fingers above the keyboard at the top if I touch it when it is running hot (if I have a lot going, illustrator, photoshop, dreamweaver etc).
    - b

I've had the same problem ever since installing Snow Leopard. Random high heat even with no system activity. One thing that seemed to help slightly was to un-check the "Open in 32-bit mode" checkbox in the "Get Info" window of Safari. This seems to avoid using the 32-bit version of Flash.
Another temporary fix that I found elsewhere in the discussions is to shut the MBP down, remove the battery and disconnect the power cord, then press the power button for 5 seconds. Re-install the battery, then boot. This supposedly does a partial reset of the PMU (Power Management Unit.)
I haven't had the problem recently (in the last week or so, knock on wood) after installing several seemingly unrelated updates. I have installed the "ProKit 6.0.1 (SnowLeopard)" update and the "Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3", but NOT the "MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.4" since my MBP doesn't qualify.
My MB Pro runs cool now, except when Time Machine is grinding away. The updates may or may not have fixed the problem. Good luck.

  • How do I stop my 2008 Macbook from constantly running hot?

I have a Macbook 13" early 2008 model (NOT pro) running on Snow Leopard that is constantly hot with the fan being exceptionally loud from the first minute of use until I put it in sleep mode or shut it down, especially when running flash, silverlight, watching videos/movies, playing music (which must be on loud to compensate for the loudness of the fan), etc.
I recently took the following steps to a more permanent solution to the problem, with no luck:
    Upgraded from Leopard to SL.
Installed extra memory (I now have 4GB ram instead of 2GB).
Deleted many items to ensure more available space on the computer (now have about 70GB free).
Opened up the laptop and cleaned the inside of dust (there was quite a lot after 5 years!). I also disconnected the fan and carefully cleaned this of dust as well (no components were harmed during the cleaning).
These steps have not been effective - in fact they do not seem to have made any difference to my heat problem. The only differences in my computer's performance are the obvious changes that come with upgrading from Leopard to SL, and that startup is about 10 seconds quicker (after installing more ram). My laptop is, in fact, scolding hot underneat and sounds like a jet taking off this very minute as I'm writing this question.
PLEASE if you have any solution for me at all (hopefully inexpensive, as I've been through quite a few expensive steps already) write them here and help me with my problem! I've had this issue for the last year or two, and am tired of not being able to have my LAPtop on my LAP because it will burn me.
    Thank you!

    Thanks for the suggestions Mike.
However, like I stated before, it's not just those activities that make it run extremely hot - even something as simple as writing this entry makes my computer feel like it's on fire and sound like plane engine. That's not normal.
I should have included in my question that I already have reset the SMC.. twice... Using the exact method you describe in your answer. Power off, remove MagSafe and battery, hold power button, reverse the steps and turn back on.
I also have been using a usb-connected cooling pad with three fans for the past year. It does prevent the laptop from heat of the laptop from touching me directly, thus making it less uncomfortable, however the computer still runs just as hot when on the cooling pad and also just as loud. I'm looking for a permanent solution.
But thank you for trying to help

  • MacBook Pro Retina - Running Hot

    Hello everyone,
I have had my new MacBook Pro Retina for less than a week now and I am loving it.
I already have a ton of great applications installed, but I have noticed it is running extremely hot.
I have uploaded an image of iStat in the systems current state. The picture is labeled iStat_IntelHD4000 indicating the system is running on the Intel graphics chipset at a very low load. (Only running Chrome.)
The next image attached is a called iStat_nVidia indicating the system is running on the nVidia graphics chipset at a significantly higher load. (Running VMware fusion with a light-weight install of Windows 7 x64.)
As you can see, the system's temperature has increased significantly even when just running a simple virtual machine under no load other than windows system overhead.
I am a fairly experienced IT professional, but I have not had a macintosh computer since a g4 iBook; loved that laptop :-)
Some statistics I could not show on here are from my bootcamp install. I installed Star Wars: The Old Republic yesterday evening, and that's when the red flag really went up.
I have SpeedFan installed on the Windows partition. I fired up SWTOR w/ max graphics and the game runs really smooth. However, the GPU temp hit 90 degrees Celsius before the fans sounded like the laptop was going to lift off the table and rocket into space.
I appreciate anyone else's input as it seems this is starting to become a trending discussion.
    Cheers,

    Hi Shootist007,
    Good question....
Here is a few screenshots of SpeedFan under Windows 7 x64.
Standard system boot into OS, no other apps running other than background processes and internet explorer.
Still pretty warm and Windows does not use the Intel graphics chipset. I used the standard installer from Bootcamp to install drivers, app support, etc...
You can ignore the threashold indicators in speedfan as I did not configure any of them.

First step I take is to make a list of the Apps I have installed that I want in the new setup as well as any irreplaceable folder/files you do not want to lose. Pretty much everything you need is in your User folder but creating the full bootable image will create a copy of everything on your hard drive just incase. A full image with CCC or SuperDuper can also be used to get your system back to square one if things go bad. Time Machine is also a good source to recover data, but I would use one of the other programs so you'll have multiple backups I found it also works best if you use the exact same user name on the new system to prevent file permissions issues.
Read http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2980 for the important stuff. It is out dated but still applies in Lion. iCloud also makes short work out of this as well. On first boot ML asks for your Apple ID, if you are using iCloud syncing Contacts, Calendars/Reminders, Notes and Safari Bookmarks will automatically get restored. All I had to do was replace my email folders and preference files for the hard stuff. On top of that copying from the back up your Documents folder, the Music/iTunes folder is all that is needed for iTunes and Pictures/iPhoto Library restored my iPhoto pictures.
Then go out onto the net and download fresh installs for any third party apps you may use. A quick Google search will generally find any data or other files you need to recover that may be hidden in the file system. It sounds tougher than it is and once you've done it it will be much quicker and easier down the road when you have to do it again. I'm sure I missed lot of info here but check and double check that you have all the data you want back on your new setup before wiping any of your back up drives, give it a few weeks before you commit the drives to backing up your new system.

  • My macbook pro keeps running hot, what can i do?

i am not a pc freak and need som eguidance on what to do to prolong the life of my beloved macbook. it gets hot, whirrs oincessantly and slows right down, sadly like i was back on a windows machine! It is almost 3 yearsd old and no doubt has tons of accumulated rubbosh on it (disk at 75%) but at times the memory is almost 100% so dont know what is causing it. happy to add memory or whatever, just need some guidance....

Go to the Bresink website, download, install and then post an image of Temperature Monitor like this:
    This is the link:
    http://http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
Also post an image of Activity Monitor showing 'All Processes' and '%CPU' displaying values from high to low, such as this:
With this information we may be able to determine if you have a problem.
    Ciao.

  • My late 2008 Macbook Pro is running hot with Mountain Lion

I've seen a few messages on here and on other sites about people's MBP's running about 5 to 10degC hotter after installing Mountain Lion.
I've had Mountain Lion for a good 5 days and I've seen no improvement. I've fixed permissions using Onyx, I've reset the PRAM and the SMC and I've also gone through all of my apps to update any that do not run on Mountain Lion.
    No improvement.
As I sit here now and type, my MBP is running at 66degC and the fan is at 3000rpm.....I then use smc control to ramp the fan up to 6000rpm.....the temperature drops to around 62degC.....I then set the fanspeed to default. About 2 minutes later, the temperature increases and the fan automatically ramps up again to around 3000rpm. Ive also updated Adobe Flash.
I only have Transmission and Safari open - that's it. Nothing else.
Does anybody have any idea how to resolve this issue or do I need to hold tight and wait for Apple to acknowledge it and issue a corrective patch? Or simply, is it that my machine is on it's deathbed? It worked okay with Lion!
I am almost convinced that Apple are upgrading these new OSX in a way so that we all have to keep going out and buying new MBP's - this isn't going to happen. I will downgrade back to Lion, and then Snow Leopard, if I have to. I will get my full money's worth with this laptop, and then I might consider going back to Windows.....
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • IBook running hot

My 12-inch iBook has suddenly started running hotter than usual. Coincidentally or not, I have also noticed my battery life is suddenly half of what it was. What can be causing this?
Right now I have only Safari and Mail open and I'm at 96% battery, but it only shows 2:24 left. I've only been on a few minutes but I feel the top front left side next to the touchpad heating up, as well as the bottom, back left.
Of course, my warranty period expired yesterday! I'm afraid there must be a serious problem.

    Dennis -
    Welcome to Apple Discussion boards!
I've dealt a lot with my iBook seeming to run hot. It seems to have a mind of it's own regarding heat, and sometimes running the same applications it'll be cool as a cucumber on my desk and hot as heck in my lap. I think the venting system isn't so hot or else the case gets really warm depending on what surface it's sitting on. I use a cooling pad with fans when I can and that seems to help tons with the sitting in my lap heat.
Now, as to your situation, the battery life issues may be better answered in the forum dedicated to battery life. You can find it Here.
As to the heat issue - is the iBook displaying any sort of odd behaviors that accompany the new heat issue? Is it slowing down a ton when running normal applications? Is it shutting itself off when it gets really hot? These would be indications that something is wrong and the heat is a symptom of that issue. Maybe some more details would be able to help us determine if there is something else going on besides just heat.
Of course, you always have the option to call Apple Customer Service and discuss the issue and see if they have any ideas or things to look for, they should still talk to you even without warranty because they will fix things (just at a cost) for those without warranty.
Please post back though with any other symptoms so we can try to help out more - and check the battery board for any tips that board might already have up about your battery issue!

  • MacBook Pro running hot after Mt. Lion upgrade

MacBook Pro mid-2009 2.53 with 8GB RAM and 750GB 7200 rpm harddrive: CPU seems to be running much hotter (>70 degrees C) and fan is the normal 2000 rpm per iStat after upgrading to Mt. Lion 10.8.1 and 10.8.2.  Bottom of laptop near center screen side is the hottest area.  Any ideas why?  Or how to cool it off again to the way it was before the upgrade from Lion?
    Thanks.

Thanks for your links.  My MacBook fan was running constantly from switch on and the underside was getting very hot.  Using your first link, I followed the Activity Monitor instructions and found that Dashboard was using '117%'.  As soon as I closed it down the fan instantly slowed and after only a few seconds switched off..
    Thanks again..

  • MacBook Pro with Yosemite 10.10.4 running hot and slow. HP file is hogging all the memory

My MacBook Pro (late 2011, core i-7) running OS X 10.10.4 is running hot and very slow with the fan screaming .  Activity Monitor shows a process called com.hp.devicemodel.TransportProxy is hogging almost all the memory and very high CPU activity.  How can I get it to stop.  Force quit will not shut it down.  I would delete the file, but don't know where it is.  Can someone please offer some help? Thanks, Tom

Try to uninstall all HP software (should be in Macintosh HD/Applications/HP folder  It should have an uninstaller within that folder.  My computer settled down just as soon as I finished the uninstall.  Went back into the system preferences and reinstalled my printer and everything seems OK now.  Hope it works for you.

  • 15" Macbook Pro Retina running very hot!

    Hi everyone,
I got my Macbook in November 2012.
I've noticed recently when I use applications which use the discrete graphics card (Geforce GT 650M), things like Logic Pro X, VLC Player or playing games like Civilization V, the temperatures reach 95 degrees celsius, according to the smc Fan Control app that I use to monitor temps.
I can lift the laptop off my desk, turn the air conditioning on in my room and point a desk fan at the laptop and temperatures still reach around 88 degrees C - and the laptop is hot enough to be uncomfortable to the touch. Heat is centered around the F6 and F7 buttons.
I know Macbooks are supposed to run hot and the case is designed to disappate heat, but it seems too hot to be safe.
If you guys could either put my mind to rest, or let me know if its worth a trip to the Genius Bar.
I'll probably be going anyway because of a problem with one of the thunderbolt ports (flickering image on external monitor and fails to recognise my audio interface) - so will probably raise the issue then anyway.
    Cheers!
    Josh

The types of applications that you describe and the temperatures that you report is actually 'normal'.  They are all CPU/GPU intensive applications that will stress the MBP processing resources thus creating a lot of heat.
Casual web browsing will result in much lower temperatures, probably in the mid 40°c to perhaps to about 60°c.  If not, then you do have a problem.
    Ciao.

  • 15" Macbook Pro late 2011 is running hot.

My 15.4" Macbook Pro late 2011 (box instalation) is running hot at 200F and the fan jumps to 6000rpm without any real reason.
I know it is not normal, what can I do? Clean install or service?

    Thanks guys,
    Hardware testing passed.
Did a SMC reset and it seems at least for now that the RPM jump happens more smoothly and not to 6000rpm.
I will try this weekend to stress it a little and see how it behaves. (I will also upgrade the memory to 8GB)
In the end I think I will do a clean install and see I there will be any more improvements.
    I'll keep you posted.
