MacBook Severe Freezing Problem

Hopefully someone can help as this is driving me slowly nuts!!
I've got a MacBook Core Duo (upgraded to 1GB Ram and 100GB hard drive by apple at purchase) which freezes with alarming regularity. The MacBook is just over a year old.
The freezing is not tied to any program or any user account and can happen at seemingly random times.
The freeze lasts for about a minute before everything resumes as if nothing has happened. During the freeze, CmdAltesc doesn't work, and I can't click anything, although the clock in the menu bar continues to work and I can still get expose to move the windows around! If I'm downloading something, the status bar freezes but then updates itself as if it has been downloading in the background whilst everything was stuck.
I've tried creating a new user account (still freezes), zapped the PRAM (still freezes) and clean reinstalled OS X (had several freezes during the actual install process!!). I've also tried dumping the plists for Finder, Sidebar, iTunes and Safari but with no success. I've also let Onyx run the full monty, but again this seems to have no effect. TechTool also reports that everything is okay.
I'm now typing this on a clean install of OS X (fully updated) with no user programs installed and guess what? Yep, the computer has frozen six times whilst I type this - and no other programs are running, only Safari.
Does this sound like a hardware issue rather than a software issue? Anybody any ideas?
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Okay, I reformatted the hard drive and reset all values to zero. Having reinstalled OS X, the problem is now even worse!!
The "welcome to os x" screens took 15 minutes to complete, with major freezes between each screen. Having finally managed to get into OS X, every single thing I do causes the system to hang. Doesn't matter what program I'm in. Even finder hangs all the time.
Is it time to take the computer to the Genius bar whilst it's free of all my junk, and still having the same problems?

  • Macbook pro freezing problem 2010 SSD Optibay Help

Hi just need a little advice, I have a Macbook Pro mid 2010 15" running mountain lion
Around 2 years ago i replaced the superdrive with a 60gb Crucial SSD housed in an optibay. On this runs the OS and all of my applications. In the normal HD drive I have a 1TB disc which saves all my photos movies music etc.
Everything has worked fine but recently my Mac keeps freezing and I get a spinning ball, this happens normally after around 10 minutes of use no matter what apps I have running. It will then require keeping hold of the power button to shut it down.
I am unable to run hardware test as I have no disc drive to insert the original disc and holding down D does not work.
I have checked and repaired disk permissions but it stated nothing was wrong.
    Any advice much appreciated.
    Thanks Dan

Apple Store won't touch it with an Opti Bay installed. It's almost certainly a firmware issue with the Crucial SSD. Is it the M4? There is a well known bug when you hit 5000 hrs of uptime that results in hourly beachballs on all Crucial M4 SSDs.
You need to check the drive's firmware status in About This Mac -> More Info -> System Report -> Serial-ATA -> and then check the "Firmare Revision" of your SSD against Crucial's website:
crucial . com . store / ssd. aspx (remove the spaces - Apple is jealous of other links, sorry)
Then find the latest firmware and figure out the best way of installing the update - it will not be easy without a CD drive unless Crucial has finally finished their Mac OS X-compatible software for providing firmware updates - which they had not yet provided as of a couple months ago when I ran into this issue.
The bottom line is the Apple Store will be of no use to you unless you remove your Opti Bay and replace your original components, and even then your warranty is probably expired so you're out of pocket and they won't have the solution anyway if it's indeed Crucial firmware.
FYI, if you do have an M4 from Crucial, the firmware revision you WANT is 040H.
    [edit]
I should note two important things:
    1) It is impossible to update the SSD's firmware with an EXTERNAL/USB CD drive/burner. Only a SuperDrive connected to the SATA ports is bootable.
    2) Crucial provides a Windows program that is supposed to update any internally connected SSDs to the newest firmware but it does not work on a Mac with Boot Camp - you must remove your SSD and install the firmware via a Windows computer or through the much more difficult process of building a bootable Mac USB key with the firmware revision installed on it. I never tried this route, because it seemed unlikely to succeed.

When I turn on a video the screen on my MacBook Pro freezes.  I've been through Apple Care and they couldn't fix the computer.  I think the fan and the graphics are the problems.  I can restart after two attempts.  Sometimes I use SAFEBOOT

Please advise the model MBP you have and the OSX you have installed.
    Also try a SMC reset:

  • My Macbook pro freezes several times a day, help.

My MacBook Pro freezes way too much. It just randomly freezes, whether it be when I'm surfing the web, or I casually move it, it just freezes, and I have no idea what to do. Should I take it to the apple store?

if it happens often while surfing the web its probably flash that is slowing it down open safari then choose safari extensions and install the click to flash plug in it should fix your problem another reason why that could happen is when your computer gets to warm
open the activity monitor programm and check under the processes once in a while if you see the processs kernel root using up a 400 percent of your cpu right before or during the crash then thats the reason, which means your computer is getting to hot
try preventing that by putting it on two books so air can reach the underside of your macbook

  • Macbook Air freezes when changing screensaver

I am having issues when I try to change my screensaver. Whenever I click on a different screensaver option, my Macbook Air freezes, and I have to force close System Preferences. I have no problems with changing my desktop wallpaper. I have restarted my laptop but it still freezes.
I saw another board with a similiar problem except instead of the screensaver window freezing, their desktop window would freeze.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder should open. If it does, look for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.screensaver". There may be several such files. Move them to the Trash.
Test. If the problem is resolved. recreate your settings in the Screen Saver tab.

  • MacBook Pro Freezes When Viewing Any Video with new iTunes

I, too, am having problems with the latest iTunes update. My MacBook Pro freezes completely. Total lock-up. This happens when trying to view any video, including video podcasts. I have to hold down the power button for several seconds to get my laptop to turn off. Any other MBP users experiencing this?

Hi there, I have the same problem as you guys, everything was fine before iTunes 7.6 or iTunes 7.6.1 I tried both, before those updates I could watch any video in iTunes without any issue, after that when I play a video, a random video my Macbook freeze totally, sometimes comes alive but 90% of the cases I have to make a hard shutdown (press and hold the power button). I can't believe this kind of bugs in a software that is so mature. Help please!

  • Macbook pro freezes for no reason even after installing 10.8 on a brand new hard drive

Macbook pro freezes for no reason even after installing 10.8 on a brand new hard drive.
Tried to reset pram, smc, nvram.
    Tried installing new RAM.
    Tried installing new hard drive.
You should know that my internal drive is installed in a cheap external case and plugged in a USB 2.0 port because i am waiting for a new hard drive cable.all
Yep all good things happened to me...i don't know if all these problems are linked, ahh and also my trackpad is behaving very erraticaly sometimes, it's like it is possessed by a ghost. My computer is not under warranty anymore so i'd like to avoid a trip to the Apple store but i'm close to doing just that.
    Any help appreciated...

It's diagnostic software. It's supposed to help you find problems. I don't think anyone is making any software yet that fixes hardware problems.
    That said, the two comments:

would lead me to think it's the logic board. On older MacBook Pro's both the USB I/O ports and the keyboard/trackpad are fed out of an integrated USB controller integrated into the South Bridge I/O controller. On newer models, the USB ports come out of an integrated North/South bridge controller and the keyboard/trackpad are handled by an SMC controller, which itself interfaces with the I/O controller. All of these items are on the logic board, and they're all unrepairable.
...unless of course the "internal drive [that] is installed in a cheap external case" is itself causing the problems. Another thing to try might be a different USB port, if you haven't done so already.
I didn't know the price for Scannerz went up. I could have sworn I only paid 30-some bucks for it. Maybe it was on sale at the time. I don't remember.
    In any case, good luck.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • HT1338 my macbook keeps freezing

my macbook keeps freezing how do i fix this problem?

Boot from your installer dvd, recovery partition, or external bootable drive and run Disk Utility to repar/verify your drives (not repair permissions).
Do a smc and pram reset.
Boot in safe mode then reboot.
See if your machine still freezes after those operations are preformed.  If so run Apple Hardware Test to check your machine.
If AHT findes nothing then your software additions will need to be investigated.  But worry about that later.

  • My macbook pro freezes in safari or google chrome or just shuts down all together

My MacBook Pro freezes constantly when using Safari or Google Chrome. I have to reset to continue with anything.
It happens more often when using Java to play games and sometimes just closes the browser.

I don't know if we are experiencing the same problem, but this is what I did and it seemed to work for me so far.
Before anything I had to hard restart my laptop. hold power button until off then turn back on.
In Finder click on Go, then click Go to Folder.  in the dialogue box type
    /var/db/crls
In that folder there are two files that you need to move to the trash
    crlcache.db
    ocspcache.db
You will need to type in your password to move these to the trash.
Restart your computer and then Empty the Trash.  It is very important that you empty the trash afterwards.  I forgot to do this the first time and I had to restart the whole process.  It has been a few days and I have been without any problems.
I am not claiming this process to be my own, I found it on another discussion thread and it worked for me. I don't have a link to it because I had to use someone else's computer and had no luck trying to find it again. This is the procedure I followed, I do remember it well and I wrote down the steps because I had to do it twice and got tired of combing through all of the websites I have searched looking for a fix to my problem.  Hopefully this helps, and try it at your own risk of course.
Let me know if you try it and it works or not, good luck.

  • Macbook Keyboard freezing

    Hi All
I get my macbook in just under 3 days it is a white 2.00Ghz Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, 120GB Hard drive model, it will also be running Mac OS X Leopard
I was wondering if the keyboard freezing problem occurs on all Macbook's & Macbookpro's models or is it a certain some, of are all of them doomed.
if we are then will I be able to install my copy of Mac OS X Tiger on the macbook, I'm asking this because I don't think tiger comes with the new X3100 graphics drivers for the Santa Rosa chips in the macbook.
Can someone explain also why it only seems to be happening only in Leopard and when will we see a fix for it from Apple
    Thanks R Nicholson

Lauraford, you seem to be having a similar problem to many other people here. Check out this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5786564

  • MacBook screen freezing.

The screen on my MacBook keeps freezing, and it is only when I hold the sides of the screen that I am able to use to momentarily. I'm out of warranty and I don't know how I can fix it. Does anyone know how I can go about fixing this issue?

I may have (had) this same problem ... until I got it fixed today. My "fix" may provide you with some insights if your case is similar to mine, i.e. screen suddenly goes dark while I'm using it (like 99% dark - you may still see some faint outline of what was on the screen before it got dark) ... and tilting the screen may (or may not) bring the screen back (to normal) ... and you know the program (or music) is still running (while the screen is black). At times, the screen would flicker slightly ... before it goes dark, but it would resume if/when I touch a key. For the past few months, I would close the screen panel down (put it to sleep) then open it up to get the bright screen again. When that stopped working, I would tilt the screen at various angles hoping to get the screen (backlight) on again.
I called Apple Support, and they wanted $49 before they start to diagnose the problem (over the phone) because my MacBook is out-of-warranty. (I bought it in June 2008). Anyways, I searched the web and figured out that the inverter board and/or cable (to the screen - on the left hinge of the screen panel) is the problem. It seems like a common problem with MacBooks. So, I brought it into an Apple store (Genius Bar) and got these parts replaced. It's a simple job ... and it did the trick.
If you're a do-it-yourself person, you can get the parts (from Apple) and replace the components yourself. For some ideas of how to disassemble your MacBook (or other Apple computer), check out: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/mac-repair.php

  • MDD freezing problem can anyone help?

    Hey
Ive been having quite majer problems with my mac. It crashes regularly and im not sure why. It will freeze any time even when running safari and has been known to do it 5 times in one day!!! These are the possable problems i can think of.
    1. Hardware problem though i have tested all my ram with memtest and the apple hardware test Cd and it says its fine.
    2. i was thinking my mac could be overheating, can this cause it to crash? At the moment its is running at 58.3 *C and all im running is safari, im not even running any widgets. The CPU fan is almost always on (though not at full speed) even when running just safari and i think the barings in the fan could be on their way out because it doesnt sound like the fan is running smoothly at all.
Would it be worth buying a new fan and getting a copper heatsink to bring the temperature down? Im not sure if i should do this in case it doesnt work as it well set me back over £100, if there is no way of finding and fixing the problem i was thinking of getting a macpro though as im a student it will take me about a year to get my hands on that kind of cash
If it helps these are the specs of my mac:
    Powermac G4 MDD 1.25DP
    1.5GB RAM
OSX 10.4.8 (im running this beacuse 10.4.9 is incompatable with final cut HD 3.0)
    GForce 4MX
    1X 80GB PATA
    1X 200GB PATA
ASUS DVD R (put in a week ago though there were problems with crashing before this)
Can anyone give me some advice on what to do?
    Thanks
    Tom

Assuming you are reading that CPU temperature with Temperature Monitor software, the specified upper limit for your CPU is 62 degrees C. Therefore, 58.3 degrees shouldn't be causing your freeze problems. Look for other possibilities.
Not that this is your problem, but a friend's upgraded Sawtooth G4 started having freeze problems in Tiger after running several months without any problems. Turns out he had his old DVD-ROM in a Firewire box connected via Firewire to his G4 and the unit started crapping out. Still not sure if the core problem is the DVD-ROM drive or the Firewire case or the Firewire connection, but disconnecting the unit ended his suddenly arising freeze problems.
Try using your MDD G4 with all Firewire and USB (except the keyboard and mouse of course) stuff disconnected from the tower case. If that ends your freezes, it will be a simple process of elimination to find the offending USB or Firewire item.
    Good luck,
    Carl B.

  • MBP running Leopard 10.5.3 and W XP  with freezing problems

    Hello everyone
Im running Leopard 10.5.3 and bootcamp 2.1 on my MBP. I am able to run xp pro only once in a blue moon. Ever since I started using bootcamp with windows xp sp2 the computer freezes up. I always have to reboot the computer in order to use the windows side of my mac. I dont know what the problem is. I decided to upgrade to version 10.5.3 and bootcamp 2.1 to see if the freezing problem goes away and it did not help.
95% of the times the computer freezes when Im using it, or when I start boot camp. I only use windows to play games and use some military software since Im a soldier in the army. Im currently deploy to Iraq and not very knowledge in computers. I have reinstalled the apple drivers with the leopard cd because the keyboard was not working properly and it worked fine for a few minutes and then it decided to crash again. It happens very regularly, sometimes Im playing a game for hours and hours and it work great, without problems. Im really lost here. I have read the post about this problem but they really gives me no solution to my problem.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    Leo

I have 10.5.3 on an external, and a 410 that I use as a backup device. After reading this post I thought I'd check it for myself. Installed the 1.8.3-6BETA, and fired it up. Everything worked, I had inputs and outputs, even recorded a little something just to test. Started playing some itunes, and about 10 minutes in, the 410 dropped out. I've tried restarting the computer and device several times, and even though the 410 shows up in my sys prefs and Logic prefs, I can't get any ins or outs out of it, and the 410 interface shows now activity on any of the channels.
    Bee Jay -
I'm going to try this tomorrow, but here's a thought.....the 1.8.3-8 says in the release notes that it has new firmware for the device. I know you're using the previous beta driver, but is it possible that if you installed the -8 driver and then downgraded to the -6BETA, that the device has retained the firmware from the -8 release, which is working with the previous BETA release and 10.5.3?
Dunno....just a thought. I was SO excited to finally get Leopard onto my internal, but now it looks like I'll have to wait a bit more. Bummer!
