MacBook shuts down about one minute after startup chime

I have an older (2007?) Macbook, and I think it is running OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.3). I can't verify this because it won't boot up. It does the same thing whether on battery or ac power: startup chime, grey screen with apple logo, twirling spokes, and grey bar filling in. Then, exactly one minute and 38 seconds after the chime, it goes black (keyboard and everything).
I have tried unplugging and waiting, starting with and without the battery, resetting PRAM (tried that a bunch of times), and starting in safe mode with shift (doing that caused it to shut down in 1:08).
I have two disks that came with the MacBook: OS X Install Disc 1 and Disc 2 (2007; v10.5), plus one disk Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD. If I should try rebooting or reinstalling, which disk(s) should I use?
Or is there another trick to try?
Thanks!

Boot from the Snow Leopard disc following the instructions from that article.
While you have Disk Utilty open, check the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom of that window.

• MacBook shuts down for no reason after install of 10.6

I have a black MacBook 2.1 with
2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
I got it from my mom after she poured a glass of water over it and it wouldn't start again and she bought herself a MacBook pro. A friend of hers dried it however and now only the part where it connects to the battery is broken but if you use it with the powercord it still works fine, so she gave it to me. I installed 10.4 again (which came with it) and had no problems with it (as long as noone messed with the powercord). After I realized however that all the software that is out now only works for 10.5 and up (thanks apple for not even providing the old iTunes version somewhere...), I figured it would be great to install SL (which I was told would work not optimally but fine on this version of MacBooks). Over ebay I ordered a new installation dvd with 10.6 but after backuping my stuff on an external harddrive and starting the installation, the trouble began:
I had to do the installation about 10 times until it finally completed. During the installation process, it was like someone pulled the powercord (remember, no battery) and it completely shut down. I figured it might just be the installation process that was kinda hard on it but now that I have it working, it does the same thing! After around 20min or so, it just completely shuts down....
Anyone got an idea why this could be happening?
I tryed booting from my backup, but even though 10.4.11 started successfully, after like 7 min the same thing happened. I'm completely clueless, I mean it work fine all the time under 10.4 and now since the installation I have these strange problems...
I would love to just have this **** snow leopard running....
Thanks for any suggestions! =)

Thanks for you answer =)
unfortunately I couldn't open your picture for some reason (403), but its the single disk with just 10.6 on it in a small white package. Seems to be rather old, at least it says 2009 on it.
UPDATE:
I did some further checks on it, a friend suggested the symptoms might fit an increased temperature, so I installed Fan Control, which pretty much told me my right fan is broken (for the left one I got a reasonable value concerning rpm but for the right one it just said -1 ...but does the macbook even have 2 fans?) well, anyways, I installed iStats pro in addition and checked all the temperatures and this doesen't seem to be it (it shut down after exactly 40min with all temps being <= 50°C). The next time I turned it on and started with the systemupgrade, it only stayed on for 30min though.
After I completed the upgrade to 10.6.6 I wanted to test for other hardware failures so I've installed prime95, but 2 self-tests went through without detecting any errors or even bringing up warnings, so it doesen't seem to be the ram either.
Now my current uptime is 1:30h, so maybe 10.6.6 for some reason solved the problem?
What I'm still having troubles with however (probably a detail I should have mentioned before...) is the monitor of the MacBook: it sometimes turns completely black, which doesn't affect my external monitor however. This happend during the installation as well (the one time where it didn't completely shut down which enabled my to finish the installation). The screen is completely dark but if you look closely you can still see some shadow of windows and buttons. When I ran the prime95 test this happend as well and after I sent the computer to sleep (close laptop lid) when I turned it back on it didn't light up again either. I didn't really have this problem under 10.4 but it happend to me twice but I think that was related to someone slightly hitting the powercord - at least that was my explanation at the time. Might the problem be caused somewhere there? I've read in other forums that sleep seemed to be a more frequent problem for MacBooks with SL.
Are there any more tests I could run in order to find out something for sure or are there some logfiles where the reason might be documented?
Well, my MacBook screen is "off" for now and I'll just keep it running now, maybe I'm lucky and it'll stay on... I would still really like to know if there is some causal relation between the MacBook screen and its turning off completely...I wouldn't really mind just keeping its screen turned off if that solves the problem for sure since I'm basically just using it as a desktop pc anyways but it was nice having a second display.
Thanks [=

• ThinkPad X100e Shuts down a few mins after startup.

I received a Lenovo ThinkPad X100e laptop from my friend to keep. He said everything works fine and that there aren't any issues. I actually have a major issue with it. Everything works fine except for the fact that when I try to install Windows 7 or just sit at the BIOS screen, it shuts down with the fan at full blast throughout the whole time. I can even feel that the system is warm from the underside, and I'm not sure what to do. I have tried running it from the AC adapter only, battery only (after charging it for a while) and battery and charger both attached. Everything except for the SSD is original because I used my own drive for safety reasons. It randomly shuts down at different intervals too. What I mean by that is if I leave it without doing anything at just the BIOS, it stays on for about 20 mins (or so) and if I try and install windows, it stays on for about the same time, If not a little shorter. Also, just to clarify, the fan spins freely and everything works fine, so I have no idea what to do. Help!
PS. This is the single core model.

Hello,
Perhaps the unit is overheating?
You can download the ThinkPad X100e Hardware Maintenance Manual and use that as a guide to disassemble the unit, thoroughly clean the inside out, including cleaning a re-applying thermal paste to the heat sink, and it should perform much better.

• Shutting Down about 1 min after boot

4 yr old, intel, Lion. Was in kernel panic. tried ctrl s and cmd opt p r. Now shuts down before login window. Tired pwr down/unplug for 1 hr- still shuts down before login. Help?

There are two or three different extensions which have been causing that "dead space" problem.
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
'''Try the Firefox SafeMode''' to see how it works there.
''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
* You can open the Firefox 4.0+ SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running.
''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
'''''If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
• I movie shuts down with one minute left to process movie. How do I fix?

iMovie shuts down with less than a minute to process. How can I fix? I've tried 4 times now. Memory issue?

Hi Thersa
May be some help here.
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
• Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
• Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
• Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iDVD.
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

• MacBook shuts down after 2s of sleep

I've run out of ideas of how to fix a problem that started on the weekend.
It's an early 2009 2GHz MacBook running 10.6.7 with 5GB of ram.
The problem is that the laptop shuts down about 2 seconds after it goes to sleep.
Initially it was also shutting down after a minute of being left idle but that behaviour has stopped since I repaired the hard disk last night. It does however now beep (even if muted) and display the shutdown dialogue box after being left idle for a couple of minutes (it continues to give a prompt beep every couple of minutes, again even if muted).
Once shut down it won't respond to the power button unless I have disconnected both the power charger and battery for a few seconds. It will then restart from either the battery or power charger.
The shut down problem is the same with or without the battery onboard. Battery count is 163 and condition is reported as "normal" in Profiler.
I've tried starting from a fresh OS X install of both 10.6 and 10.5.6 on a USB drive but it still shuts down on sleep.
I've reset SMC, repaired permissions, repaired the disc (there were some errors that were repaired) and now run out of things to try.
The system.log shows the following when it shutdowns down while sleeping:
May 30 20:50:52 loginwindow[41]: loginwindow SleepWakeCallback WILL sleep
May 30 20:50:54 configd[14]: PMConnection mDNSResponder com.apple.powermanagement.applicationresponse.slowresponse 2047 ms
Any ideas?

If I recall correctly, MacBooks go into a mode of sleep called Hibernate by default. In this mode, the contents of the memory are saved to disk when the sleep starts. You can tell if this is happening by looking at the light on the front. If it stays fully on for 10 seconds or so then the computer is hibernating, otherwise it is just asleep.
Anyway, to stop rambling - maybe you should try toggling between normal sleep and hibernate to see if that makes any difference. Follow the instructions on this page:

• Firefox shuts my computer down a few minutes after starting it.

It's real simple for anybody but people at Mozilla. MY COMPUTER SHUTS DOWN a few minute after starting FireFox. The Firefox website is broken, and nobody pays attention to anything. In plain english, everything Mozilla bites. Got it now? Not likely...

The entire computer crashes? I don't think I've ever seen a case where Firefox crashes the operating system. Could you give us more details?
* Does the computer turn off, or do you get some error screen, or does the entire system freeze?
* Are you usually on the same site when it happens?
* Do you have any add-ons installed?
* When was the last time you scanned your computer for malware?

• My macbook shuts down after 5 minutes

My macbook shuts down after 5 - 10 minutes, and I have to restart it each time. Can anyone help me with this? I've tried resetting the PRAM, re-instatlling the OS, switching HDD's. I asked a friend of mine what it could be and he said it may possibly be the power switch button. Any answers out there?

Have you tried resetting the System Management Controller? That is a good first step for power related issues such as this.
If that doesn't do it, you are looking at a hardware repair.
Best of luck.

• MacBook Shuts Down After Unplugging Powercord Although Battery is Installed

Hi,
Whenever I disconnect the power cord of my MacBook, the OS shuts down within 2-5 seconds. The battery is installed and it has a 80% health and it has 185 charge cycles. I've been experiencing this strange behavior after two days of installing (Secrets Preference Pane). But I'm not sure if it was behind the problem. I even uninstalled Secrets preference pane but the problem still exist.
At first I though the battery is dead, but for some reason I tried running the laptop later on the battery power and it ran for whole 2+ hours until it was fully discharged. I then charged the battery fully and used it again and it was working like a charm. But later the problem returned and the MacBook shuts down whenever it is not connected to the power cord. If the battery was dead, then how come it runs without a problem sometimes? also the health indicator shows that the battery is 80% healthy and the charging cycles is not much and whenever the system shuts down, the indicator on the bottom of the battery shows that it is fully charged.
I don't know what is causing the problem, and why sometimes the problem arises and sometimes it goes away.
I am using a 2007 white MacBook with the original battery (provided with the laptop). I am running Mac OS 10.6.2.
I tried several solutions such as:
- Cleaning the battery and MacBook ports.
- Resetting the PRAM.
- Fully discharging the battery and then fully charging it.
But it seems that I am not able to resolve the problem. I would appreciate any provided help.
Thanks,
shaknon
Note: Here are two pictures that shows stats about the battery:
1- http://jump.fm/SAOBW
2- http://jump.fm/JBHYI

I am having identical issues as you described - although I haven't installed secrets preference pane (so I doubt that's involved).
My problem went on for hours one night, I got sick of dealing with it and went to sleep with AC adapter unplugged and macbook off. The next day, it worked fine all day long. Now here I am in the evening - had a power cut, AC adapter went off obviously, and MacBook powered off. Again now I have this problem.
I tried everything you've talked about (PRAM reset) as well as SMC reset, no change. My battery stats look great, says battery is healthy. This started happening to me a few days ago, I upgraded to 10.6 a few weeks ago.. not sure what caused this to start happening.
I found one VERY interesting thing, maybe you can check this: when I have the problem, with AC adapter unhooked, when I try to power up my MacBook it comes up for 2-5 seconds (sometimes until the apple tone, sometimes not), and turns off. If I HOLD THE POWER BUTTON for 5+ seconds the MacBook remains on, the white light on the front flashes, and I get a long tone. This procedure is supposed to be used for firmware updates or something. Anyway, when I do this, the computer comes up perfectly and it uses the battery. When I hook an AC adapter up, that works, but as soon as I unplug it I am back to the same problem. You should try this and see if it works for you, it may be a clue. If nothing else, it's a good way to still use your laptop if you are on the go and can't be dead in the water
My wife has a MacBook slightly newer than mine, I'm going to try her battery when possible to see if that solves the problem. I hesitate to go to the genius bar as they are terrible where I live and it's always been a waste of time
(Also, the battery update fails for me as well).

• MacBook Shuts down during startup

My MacBook started acting slow the other day and then today when I started it up, it was in a constant lock up with a spinning pin wheel. No force quit commands or anything would work. So, I restarted it and now after the Grey screen with the Apple logo, the MacBook shuts down. The only thing I can get running is by holding C with the Leopard disc in there.
I tried to run Disk Utility from there but everything failed. I'm assuming I need a new hard drive? Is there anyway to save data from within the Leopard disc bootup? Maybe over a network?
Thanks

Hello,
I am having this very same issue. It shuts down during startup. I can boot into Windows, and using the Leopard startup disc, Disk Utility could not work any magic. I do not have a second Mac or access to one for any backup purposes. I have no idea what else to try, does anyone know something besides backing up through firewire, on how I can either save my computer's data or resurrect the drive? Thank you for your help.

• When I play songs on my itunes account, they stop after about one minute and itunes goes to the next one. how do I fix this? These are songs in entire albums that I have purchased.

when I play songs on my itunes account, they stop after about one minute and itunes goes on to the next song. This is happening with songs on albums I have purchased direclty through itunes

Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past music purchases, delete the broken files from your iTunes library, go to the iTunes Store home page, click on the Purchased link from the Quick Links section in the right-hand column, then select Music and Not on this computer. You should find download links for your tracks there.
If you don't see them straight away it may help to close and restart iTunes.
While downloading select Downloads in the left-hand column and make sure Allow Simultaneous Downloads is unticked.
If the problem persists, or that facility is not yet available in your region, contact the iTunes Store support staff through the report a problem links in your account history, or via Contact Support.
