MacBook shuts down for no reason after install of 10.6

I have a black MacBook 2.1 with
2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
I got it from my mom after she poured a glass of water over it and it wouldn't start again and she bought herself a MacBook pro. A friend of hers dried it however and now only the part where it connects to the battery is broken but if you use it with the powercord it still works fine, so she gave it to me. I installed 10.4 again (which came with it) and had no problems with it (as long as noone messed with the powercord). After I realized however that all the software that is out now only works for 10.5 and up (thanks apple for not even providing the old iTunes version somewhere...), I figured it would be great to install SL (which I was told would work not optimally but fine on this version of MacBooks). Over ebay I ordered a new installation dvd with 10.6 but after backuping my stuff on an external harddrive and starting the installation, the trouble began:
I had to do the installation about 10 times until it finally completed. During the installation process, it was like someone pulled the powercord (remember, no battery) and it completely shut down. I figured it might just be the installation process that was kinda hard on it but now that I have it working, it does the same thing! After around 20min or so, it just completely shuts down....
Anyone got an idea why this could be happening?
I tryed booting from my backup, but even though 10.4.11 started successfully, after like 7 min the same thing happened. I'm completely clueless, I mean it work fine all the time under 10.4 and now since the installation I have these strange problems...
I would love to just have this **** snow leopard running....
Thanks for any suggestions! =)

Thanks for you answer =)
unfortunately I couldn't open your picture for some reason (403), but its the single disk with just 10.6 on it in a small white package. Seems to be rather old, at least it says 2009 on it.
UPDATE:
I did some further checks on it, a friend suggested the symptoms might fit an increased temperature, so I installed Fan Control, which pretty much told me my right fan is broken (for the left one I got a reasonable value concerning rpm but for the right one it just said -1 ...but does the macbook even have 2 fans?) well, anyways, I installed iStats pro in addition and checked all the temperatures and this doesen't seem to be it (it shut down after exactly 40min with all temps being <= 50°C). The next time I turned it on and started with the systemupgrade, it only stayed on for 30min though.
After I completed the upgrade to 10.6.6 I wanted to test for other hardware failures so I've installed prime95, but 2 self-tests went through without detecting any errors or even bringing up warnings, so it doesen't seem to be the ram either.
Now my current uptime is 1:30h, so maybe 10.6.6 for some reason solved the problem?
What I'm still having troubles with however (probably a detail I should have mentioned before...) is the monitor of the MacBook: it sometimes turns completely black, which doesn't affect my external monitor however. This happend during the installation as well (the one time where it didn't completely shut down which enabled my to finish the installation). The screen is completely dark but if you look closely you can still see some shadow of windows and buttons. When I ran the prime95 test this happend as well and after I sent the computer to sleep (close laptop lid) when I turned it back on it didn't light up again either. I didn't really have this problem under 10.4 but it happend to me twice but I think that was related to someone slightly hitting the powercord - at least that was my explanation at the time. Might the problem be caused somewhere there? I've read in other forums that sleep seemed to be a more frequent problem for MacBooks with SL.
Are there any more tests I could run in order to find out something for sure or are there some logfiles where the reason might be documented?
Well, my MacBook screen is "off" for now and I'll just keep it running now, maybe I'm lucky and it'll stay on... I would still really like to know if there is some causal relation between the MacBook screen and its turning off completely...I wouldn't really mind just keeping its screen turned off if that solves the problem for sure since I'm basically just using it as a desktop pc anyways but it was nice having a second display.
Thanks [=

  • Macbook Shutting down for no reason!!

    Hi,
I've had my macbook since june and just this week the battery has started playing up. I have been using it normally. nothing heavy, just the net then all of a sudden the screen goes blnk and it switches off. There is still and hour or so left of batery life. This has happened twice now.
After it goes black i can't switch it back on ubtil i plug it into the power supply. Then when I switch it on the screen shows the same page that i left it on and there is also a little cross in the battery box. (but this goes after a while).
If anyone has any advice please help..
    Thanks

Interesting. Your MacBook had about the same period of time before going bad as mine.
It is not your BATTERY that is the problem, it's the heat sync. It is free to get it fixed within a year. If you have not done so, I suggest you purchase AppleCare Extended Warrenty which means you can have your MacBook fixed within THREE years instead of the complimentary one year. It is about $250, but it's 100% worth it. My whole family has had Apple computers for years and we really regret it when we don't get the AppleCare. The AppleCare lasts three years from the date of your MacBook purchase.
They're going to have you try a series of things if you call in, truly, it's a hassle. The best thing to do is go to a local Apple Store, if there is one. Then go to the Genius Bar and talk with one of the Apple Geniuses (these are the guys and gals who fix your problems with Apple products). I would first tell them that you know other people who have had the Random Shutdown Problem (as it's being called--since quite a few people have had this problem) and that if anything it is the HEAT SYNC that fixes it. If they do not replace the heat sync, they will try a number of other pointless things: battery, keyboard, logic board, etc. Before they get to replacing the heat sync and that just wastes your time and lots of computer materials.
I had my MacBook repaired three times. The first time: the battery, the second: the keyboard, and the third: my heat sync. The heat sync usually fixes the RSP, but it didn't for me--strangely enough. So now my MacBook is being replaced, which has been a pain in the arse, but oh well.
Good luck with your MacBook! If you have any questions, please email me at: [email protected]

my computer displays grey screen and apple logo for 10 minutes or more during start up and shut down. sometimes it refuses to shut down . this issues started after installing OS lion. what do i do?

I don't think it's exactly an incomplete installation brody, but most likely in-correct permissions somewhere along the line that either happened, or became magnified during the upgrade. Also, it could be corruption as well.
First thing to do, is boot up holding down Shift key to do a safe-boot so we an clean up any corrupted OS caches, after that do another reboot, but go to the Lion recovery, and scan the HD for errors, repair any if you find them, and then try to do a Repair Permissions job.
That should fix the issue, if not, we can start doing a PRAM reset  and SMC for good measure.

  • Ibook G4 shuts down for no reason

hi can anyone help me with a problem thats just started to happen with my ibook or maybe its happened to someone else and they have a solution. the problem i'm having is that my ibook just shuts down for no reason esp. when i'm online and won't start up again unless i remove the battery leave it out for a few seconds then put it back in and it press the on button. i have kept my software up to date and as soon as a new update is available its downloaded and installed on the computer and i also have intego security software on my mac, so this is why i'm a little confused if my software is up to date and i have my security software protecting my mac why is it shutting down i have ran virus scan after virus scan but it comes up clean every time, is my mac on the way out (its only 2 years old) or is there something i'm missing or not doing. i would be very thankful if anyone can help me with this because although there is plenty of shiny new macbooks out there i kinda like my ibook and i don't want to let it go with a fight. thanks again

    hi john
quick question is it possible for my ibook to reset its pmu itself, i looked up the effects of resetting the pmu on the apple site and one of the things it says will happen when the pmu is reset is that, "After the reset, on some iBooks and PowerBooks, the system clock is set to 00:00 (GMT), 01 Jan 1970 for computers with Mac OS X" , its just that when my ibook shuts down an i manage to start it back up the clock is set to 00:00 (gmt) 01 jan 1970 so does that mean its resetting itself or is the date going back to then because i take the battery out. thanks for your help so far

  • Shut down for no reason

After I installed OS Lion, my macbook pro constantly shut down for no reason both when it is pluged in with power cord or not. What's wrong with my laptop?

No, it was not. It just constantly shutting down every 5 mins after I upgraded to OS Lion.

  • I just downloaded Lion and now my computer just shuts down for no reason. What is its problem?

I just downloaded Lion and now my computer just shuts down for no reason. What is its problem?

I recently made the same mistake.  The thing to do is download the new Quicken Essentials for MAC.  After you install the new version follow the instructions on how to transfer your old files.  There is a way, it just takes a little time and, if I remember correctly, it takes the info from your quicken backup files. Hopefully you had auto back up on and your files are intact.  I didn't and reconstruction was a bear but entirely possible.  The new Quicken is quite different but seems to work quite well.  Good luck.

  • Mac mini keeps shutting down for no reason

My mac mini keeps shutting down for no reason. If I try to turn it on right after it shuts down, it won't or I may hear a chine, power light lit up for about 5 seconds and turns off. I have to wait a while before it would turn on again. And sometimes it stays on for 15 min, 2 hrs or 1 full night ... but then the cycle happens again.

Make sure the power cord is attached firmly to the back of the Mini. If so, try a clean install of Snow Leopard (or whatever version of OS X it came with). If neither of those suggestions works, it's likely a bad power supply, in which case you'll need to take it to an Apple store or call Apple support.

  • HP Probook 4710s shuts down for no reason!

    Hello everyone,
I own an HP Probook 4710s laptop for about 3 months now.
Recently I played Call Of Duty MW2 and after a while of playing it just shut down for no reason.
I played it before on my laptop but it didn`t shut down.
And just recently I played Age Of Empires 3 and it also shut down.
It happened twice with Age Of Empires.
Tho it never happened when I wasn`t playing games I`m still concerned and would appriciate any kind of help or explenation from anyone.
    Thank you.

Check your Event Viewer logs at the time of the shutdown and look for critical errors and events.  It sounds like a heat problem.
You might want to check for a bios and/or a video card update here.

  • Maverick Shuts Down For No Reason

I am tired of Maverick shutting down for no reason. It even does it in Safe Mode. I've tried all the tricks of removing preferences, extension and still it keep shutting down with it's kernel panic screen. I'm the one that's paniced. I can't work in any program, such as Final Cut or Safari for too long as it will shut down. I'm thinking I need to reformat. Great. My least favorite option. But, I need to get all my files off, deauthorize software and hoping that I can get my mail and other contact back.
Hoping someone might have an answer to avoid reformating.
I keep sending in these reports to APPLE, 3 to 8 a day. Here is the most recent one.....Hopefully, I can post this before my computer decides to reboot.

There is no such thing as a "hard reset".
If basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide fails to resolve the issue, then take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

Warranties expire, hardware eventually fails, ignorant people live with issues for long periods of time and the above statement is simply ignorant.

  • Since i've made the last update, my laptop shutting down for no reason.

I just udpated to OS X Maverick and ever since my system is shutting down for no reason. Then i tried to reset my SMC but it still not working. Any solution ? I reported more than one issue reading forums but not the same as mine.

I'll try to explain you but i'm french so I don't have the geek vocabulary   My laptop obviously shut down when I disconnect my battery even if it's fully charged, and only since i've made the maverick udpate 1 week ago. I don't find any report about it in the go menu.. weird isn't it ? I join the etrecheck' system report :

  • My iPad shuts down for no reason, mine is wifi only, what to do?

My iPad shuts down for no reason, in the middle of doing something. Mine is wifi only, what can I do?

My iPad Air version 8.2 shuts down for no reason and then will only restart if it connected to power. When It restarts after I have connected it to power, the battery shows that it is dead and the clock displays 4 pm. Then the iPad reboots and the clock displays the correct time and the battery display shows the correct charge. The iPad is updated and works normally except for its spontaneous shutdown behavior.
My solution for the time being is to connect it to a portable external  battery when I am away from a power source.

Thanks Brian. Reboots don't work even though the iPad has a charged battery. It will boot automatically if it is connected to power.
I will take it to an Apple store even though it is out of warrantee.

  • My ipod touch shut down for no reason. now when i try to turn it on again, it goes to the apple icon to the spinning wheel, then it repeats. HELP!!!!

My ipod touch shut down for no reason. now when i try to turn it on again, it goes to the apple icon to the spinning wheel, then it repeats.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

My itunes account on windows xp shuts down for no reason.  If even try to delete something from my library it shuts down.   It wont recognize my iphone and there is an issue with network connectivity and I can't connect to the store.  I have already  reinstalled itunes and did a system restore on my computer, firewall has been checked, itunes is ok on firewall and virus scan done.  Ideas??

Same problem. I can see the itunes store so not a problem with windows firewall. The account is active on my iphone so i know i am not locked out. I can connect the PC to my iphone so i know itunes is working ok. It is just logging into itunes on this pc which doesn't work. Only thing I can think of is that the email address I use for my apple id has been offline for a while and is working again now, I'm wondering whether this has been the case for others who are having this issue?
