Macbook shuts down instead of going to sleep

Since installing Lion, my 2008 white Macbook does not go to sleep either automatically after the preset time (15 minutes) or when I close the lid. Instead it completely shuts down and has to be restarted with the power button. This happens regardless of whether on battery or plugged in to power.
It seems to take much longer to boot up -- about 2 min. 45 sec.-- than it did with Snow Leopard. Login seems to lag several seconds after entering password. Any ideas?
(edit to add: I recently replaced the battery and upgraded the RAM to 4GB.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t have Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there.  https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • IMac G5 shuts down instead of going to sleep

Recently, my G5 iMac started shutting down instead of going to sleep. I have reset all of the sleep controls but it still shuts down. Does anyone have any ideas? I am running 10.5.5

Have you vacuumed the fans and the air vents? You can also reset the [SMU|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908] and check in Console>system log for any messages about "maximum temperature exceeded for 30 seconds".

  • My macbook air shuts down instead of going to sleep.

My MacBook Air running OSX 10.7.5 shuts down rather than going to sleep when left unused for a short period.
I notice this started about 3 or 4 days ago.
It doesn't matter if it is connected to the power supply or running from battery.
I haven't made any changes to system preferences.
    Any Ideas.
It did a similar thing when I first got it and it had to back to Apple to have most of it's innards replaced under warranty.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Computer shuts down instead of going to sleep (no battery)

Hi, I've checked some of the posts and notice that there are power management issues to these macs. I just picked up a used one and with no battery installed, if I go to Apple-sleep, the coomputer will shut off instead of sleeping. If in the energy settings, the computer is set to sleep at a given time, the computer will do a hard shutdown. I have it set to never sleep for now, but would like some guidance from the forum on how to deal with this power issue.
    any ideas, thanks
    Lisa

I've been having this problem for the last 4 months. I called Apple today and let them know about my MacBook which is only 1 year old. I've installed the battery update, reset the SMC and calibrated the battery, yet always when I reach about 45% my MacBook shuts down; I've never once ever had a low level warning.
Well, Apple asked for the serial # on the battery and then they told me that that serial # was not affected and that the Battery Update program is only for Apple Care customers. I told them their web site says nothing to the effect - they said regardless that I'll have to buy a new battery and I could not be helped; I'm not sure who to complain to since from what I have read, the problems I've had with my battery and the time period I bought the MacBook (directly from Apple) all point to the battery issue. I need someone to give some advice on who to call.
Here is the site i went to and the phone number I called is from there:

  • Late 2012 Mac mini with OSX 10.8.2 has started shutting down instead of going into sleep mode.

Sometime in the last week or so my mac mini has started going into full shut down instead of sleep mode.
I have tried checking and unchecking energy saver boxes but haven't found anything which will get me back to where I used to be - and I haven't knowingly changed anything to make this happen.- maybe an OS update caused it?
The machine will fire up with a tablet click rather than needing the reset button to be pushed so clearly the machine is sort of halfway between sleep and full 'off'. Most frustrating as one of the key issues for me in getting this my first mac was its easy sleep and super quick fire up compared to windows.
    Any help appreciated
Oh yes  I just remembered that I did just install 2 8gb of crucial RAM (to replace the supplied 2 2gb but surely that can't have anything to do with it - can it)?

Adding to my first post I can now advise that when the mac goes into sleep mode the light on the front stays on (it does not pulse so clearly it is not really sleeping).
When i click the tablet / keyboard this is actually what triggers the mac to reboot
I have tried resetting the SMC as per the following link to no avail
    http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/qt/Resetting-The-Smc-System-Management-Con troller-On-Your-Mac.htm
    Help please!

  • MacBook Pro C2D shuts down instead of going to sleep (on battery power)

    dear macusers,
it happended the first time 2 days ago, today again: while my MacBook Pro is inactive on battery power the screen dims, then turns black like usually, but then it doesn't go to sleep, instead it shuts down. I have 10.4.8 installed, i didn't do the summertime update. I took a look at the log files (/var/log) but couldn't find something strange. Never had a problem using my machine...
    anybody has the same issue?
    sorry for my bad english!
    john

When that happened to me a couple months ago with my Powerbook G4 it happened to be the battery itself. I did the apple battery exchange since there was a recall on my battery. I use my notebook primarily as a desktop replacement and hadn't noticed the problem until months later when I unplugged the notebook, seconds later the notebook would shutdown and even reset the system clock.
Applecare couldn't figure it out so I went to my friends house and swapped batteries to test and sure enough, when I put my battery into his computer, it shut his down and reset his clock.
    Check the battery.

  • My iPad 3 shuts down instead of going to sleep...

My iPad 3 has the latest software update -- I'm using WIFI and have cellular turned off.
Normally after using it, I close it and it goes to sleep, when I open I just hit the home button to turn it back on.  Over the last few days, after using it, and leaving it for a while, I open it and its completely shut down and the only way to get it back on is to reset it with the power button and the home button held down till the apple show up...
    any suggestions ?

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
    Restart / Reset   >  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Restoring  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
Be sure to make an appointment first...
    Note:
    1)  Make sure you have the Latest Version of iTunes (v11) Installed on your computer
    iTunes free download from www.itunes.com/download
    2)  Also consider Deleting any Apps you have Purchased / Downloaded but you now never use...

  • Should G5 shut down when it goes to sleep?

I bought this G5 on eBay for a song (and I've been singing ever since) .  It came without a disk, no accesss to the password and they had taken the Airport Card out.  (Specks say it comes with the APCard)  Serves me right I guess.  Anyhow,  It has always shut down right after it goes to sleep.  Is there anything I can do to stop this?  I work between two computers and sometimes I don't get right back to it.  Restarting all the time is a real annoyance.

OK, the answer to the main question is "no" it shouldn't shut down when it goes to sleep.  I would first open the Energy Saver panel in System Preferences and make sure that you have the machine set to never go to sleep.  Here is a Tiger screen shot of that panel:
That should solve your immediate problem.  The particular settings work very well for me, allowing me to put the computer to sleep from the Apple menu when I am not going to be using it for a while.  You might also want to take a look at the "Schedule,,," area in the energy saver panel, as in this picture, to see that nothing is selected there.
Now, if the machine actually shuts down when you command it to sleep, then there are other issues we can work on.

  • MacBook shuts down instead of sleeping when battery low

Like many people, I had the infamous MacBook sudden shutdown problem where my MacBook (original model) would suddenly shut down wihtout warning regardless of if it was running off battery or AC adapter. I took the MacBook into the Apple store, they did their magic, and two weeks later an updated MacBook was shipped to me, free of the problem. I also applied the firmware update when it came out.
Now I have a new problem...it's that the MacBook doesn't seem to want to sleep when the battery gets low. Instead, it will suddenly shut down without warning. In the past, I seem to recall that it would give alerts saying that my power was low, and eventually force itself to sleep. However, now the battery can be as high as 15-20% and the MacBook will shut down. This never happens when the battery is not on the low side, so I'm wondering if this is a problem with the MacBook guaging how much power it has left. Sometimes, I notice that when I plug it in and reboot, the battery says it is at 0%, even though it clearly was not prior to the shutdown (though that didn't happen just now when it shut down - when I rebooted after connecting the AC adapter, it was at 15%).
I tried resettting the SMC firmware, which seems to help transietly, but the problem recurs. 90% of the time I use my computer plugged in, so that's why I've not noticed it much

The same thing happened to me last night -- the Macbook shut down because of low battery instead of sleeping, and it gave no warning messages at all as the battery power got low.
I never had the sudden shutdown problems, though.
I also checked the battery capacity with CoconutBattery, and it reported that the Max Battery Capacity was 4105 mAh, which is only 78% of the battery's original max capacity. Today, CoconutBattery reports that the battery's max capacity is 5035 mAh (96% of original capacity), which is more reasonable for a laptop less than a year old.
Perhaps resetting PRAM or the Power Management Unit could solve this problem.
Any experts out there with a solution?

  • Macbook shuts down instead of sleeps

I have a 2ghz core duo macbook (modle No. A1181 (EMC 2092)) that I recently restored from a time machine backup. It was at 10.5.5 and now its at 10.6.8. So, right now I close the lid of the macbook and immediatly shuts down instead of sleeping. The previous macbook (the one I made the back up from) didn't have this problem and nor did this one before the upgrade. I have already tried resetting the smc and the pram. Anyone have any ideas?

Having never shutdown my laptop, I was guessing on its reaction to closing the lid. So, I shutdown my MBP and closed the lid. It did continue the shutdown, so there seems to be a problem with yours.
Sometimes, sleep and shutdown issues can be solved by resetting the SMC

  • My imac os 10.7.5 will not shut down- it just goes to sleep

when i go apple/shut down i get the box asking me if i want to shut down. i click shut down, and it goes through the ordinary routine- one thing at a time, grey screen- fade to black. next day tho, i just touch it and it's back, exactly as if it had been asleep

I still can't figure this USB problem out.

  • WiFi shuts down when display goes to sleep

Often when my display goes to sleep, my wifi disconnects. As soon as move the mouse or press a button, the screen goes on, the wifi reconnects. This is specially annoying when I'm using the Boxee streaming to my Boxee box, suddenly the stream stops as the screen has shut off, and the wifi with it.
Any idea how to fix this?

Good point! I think this is a new setting or so as my old MBA never did this.
In Energy Saver settings I have now clicked in "Prevent computer from sleeping when display is off"
    This should solve it.
Funny there's no setting for actually sleeping the computer?

  • Imac shuts down when it goes to sleep and has to be restarted

if my computer falls into sleep mode it automatically shuts down and i have to hold power to start up.  When it restarts it says it was a kernel panic.  I have tested all the hardware with the tools disk and all systems passed.  I am running Lion.

  • IMac shuts down instead of sleeping

Hi everybody. Forum newbie here. I'm having a bit of trouble with my iMac. First of all, it's a G5 with 2.0 GB of facory installed RAM, and running OSX 10.4. I bought it barely used from a friend and when I first got it in the spring it shut down instead of going to sleep a couple of times. It wasn't a big deal, since it was overnight and not in use at the time. From then on it was fine. Over the past few days however, it has started doing this again, and much more aggressively.
It seems that it doesn't go to sleep at all anymore. It just shuts down. If you put it to sleep it will shut down. If it goes to sleep on its own, it shuts down. I went into the preferences panel and set it so it never goes to sleep and the monitor shuts down after 2 hours. I left it and went back to it after about 20 minutes and it had shut down. This happened repeatedly last night, causing me to waste 6 or 7 DVD-R, as I was attempting to burn one and it would shut down during the burning process. I had a pretty bad case of computer-induced Tourrette's syndrome I've gotta say.
As long as it's in use, there's no problem, but if you leave it alone for any length of time over say 20 minutes it seems that it's going to shut down regardless of your energy saving settings. And it doesn't seem to sleep at all anymore.
I do lots of video work and between burning DVDs and rendering video, I frequently need to leave the computer alone and let it do its thing. If it's going to shut down every time I leave it alone, then that makes my work impossible, or at least extremely annoying as I will have to run back and forth every 10 minutes to jiggle the mouse to make sure it doesn't go to sleep.
Anyone know what might be causing this or how to fix it? Thanks so much!

Welcome to Discussions. Which model do you have? If it's a Rev A (not ambient light and no iSight), then you might qualify for the Repair Extension Program. In any case, try and reset your PMU/SMU. PLease post back,
