Macbook shuts down unexpectedly after an hour of use

I've had my MacBook since 2006, and I've had some minor problems now and then.
But since few days ago, my mac shuts down unexpectedly after I use it for about an hour.
at first I thought that maybe it's the fan, cause I've never cleaned the fan since the day I've bought it and my mac gets pretty hot after a while. but it used to work just fine when it got even hotter.
now I'm guessing maybe it's the battery? I've also never replaced the battery to a new one, cause I've almost always used power adapter instead of using battery alone. but I think I've heard it somewhere that the battery still dies even when you only use power adapter. is this true?
I usually just turn mac right back on when it shuts down, and it goes well for about 30 mins and then it shuts down again.
could anyone please be kind enough to tell me if it is the battery that's causing this such a frustrating problem? I don't know if this would help figure out the problem, but this is what battery info says,
Battery Information:
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 3674
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 3648
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 12443
Cycle Count: 105

Thank you so much for answering! I've actually read your answer to other similar forum, and have just installed iStatPro. it says that my fan is "exhaust" and at 0rpm. do i HAVE to replace the fan to a new one? can I just open up my mac and clean out the fan? if so, would you recommend this instead of buying a new fan? one last thing, if I buy a new fan, is it easy for me to replace it by myself? again, thank you so much for your answer.

  • MacBook Shuts Down Unexpectedly After Inserting DVD

I was about to watch my new TRANSFORMERS movie on DVD and after about 3 minutes of watching, my MacBook just shuts down immediately, so i tried the second time. This time, i was plugging in my ipod to recharge while the movie was paused. Once i got back and started to play my movie, the whole screen turned black (but the movie was still playing), and it shuts down again. Can anyone please tell me why??

I have JUST started experiencing the same problems where I'll insert a DVD and the computer may or +may not+ shut down unexpectedly in the middle of playing. When I try to restart with the dvd still in the laptop, it may also shut down again before I can successfully log in. This has also happened with several different DVDs over the last 4 days, so I don't think it's tied to the DVD itself...
I also have the computer on, plugged in, with the battery taken out, and with an external harddrive and mouse plugged in. Are the peripherals making it worse?
I bought my macbook in the US with a 3 year applecare plan and am now living in Beijing, China. I would like to be able to get this issue fixed, but don't know where to begin with calling a place in China. What is the protocol?

  • Facebook shuts down unexpectedly after a few minutes.

When using Facebook on Safari, Google Chrome or the app it shuts down unexpectedly after a few minutes.  I tried restarting my iPad, reloading the app & deleting the cookies.  It's frustrating.

Humm.... my first thought is that the new iMac's only come in 21.5 and 27" and the second is that your not giving us much to go on. You know things like, it ran fine for the first hour, day, week, month, I checked the power cord to make sure that the connections are tight, I followed the User's Guide, it was working fine until I upgraded the RAM, plugged in my printer, an External Hard Drive, I started having this problem after I downloaded xxxx, it fell off the desk, I dropped it down the stairs on the way from the car to the house, the UPS driver kicked it off the back of the truck, you know the basic stuff like that.

  • Shuts down unexpectedly after an application crashes

My Macbook Air (iOS 10.9.5, 1.3 GHz, 4 GB) has shut down unexpectedly twice when an application has crashed: first with Firefox (32.0.3) and second with Preview (7.0). With Firefox I was using some regular web apps and browsing sites. With Preview I was cropping a picture.
This has never happened with my previous Macs. Is this normal?
    Thanks!

  • Macbook shuts down unexpectedly when battery reaches 20% and unplugged

I noticed this behavior after installing the Bonjour Update 2010-001 (version 1.0) and the Remote desktop client update (version 3.3.2) last night. Upon reaching 20% of battery capacity, the macbook shuts down, and will not restart until it is plugged in. There is no warning, it just turns off.
Does anyone know what's going on?

Wow! I recently had this same EXACT problem and called Apple Care about it last week and said that they cannot do anything about it since my battery cycle is too high ( only 315) ! MacBook is the same model as yours. I finally brought mine in today at a local genius bar (Otay Ranch) and they replaced the battery even though My Mac's just a little over a month its 1 year warranty. I will now calibrate this battery and see if the same problem persists. When I called about this problem, the Apple Care rep says that he has never seen this problem before but now I just saw this and glad that I wasn't the only one, maybe its a faulty design on the first generation Unibody with removable batteries (Late 2008)

  • Macbook Pro shutting down unexpectedly after new OSX 10.9 download.

I bought my MacBook Pro in mid 2010 area. I had 10.6.8 version on it. I recently when the new operating system came out, I decided to upgrade and download it. Everything was fine, nothing slowed down or changed. However, recently my computer has shut down every couple of weeks or so unexpectadly then rebooted all on its own and have everything I was working on be back to where it was. I copied the code down to try and figure it out. Nothing has come up in Google, so I'm wondering if anyone here would be able to help. As a last resort, i'm going to probably have to factory reset my computer, but if anyone knows what is going on, i'd love the help. Here is the error report code I recieved:

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
             com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000

                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,

  • 13"Macbook shuts down unexpectedly 10.5.8

    I have a MacBook 13" (2008 I think) running 10.5.8.
In January I had to have a new logic board after it failed to switch on after a period of running very slow and freezing.
All ok for some time, but then I started to get unexpected shut downs/restarts. Both with and without power supply connected. Also had the first 2 instances of the emergency shut down window and kernal panic notification. Every couple of days it just restarts all on its own. I think is when I am seeing a video or have several applications open at once, but not sure.
I have run diagnostics and first aid and verifications etc and all comes back ok.
My partner uses PC and says a PC behaves like this when it overheats. Is that possible for this Mac?
    Is this a hardware problem?
    Thanks.

The usual steps for resolving this type of issue are
    - Reset the PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    - Reset the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    - Maybe calibrate the battery? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
I would also download Onyx and work through its set of verification, maintenance and cache cleaning procedures, by going left to right through its tool bar.  If you're still having problems after all these steps then it's time to visit the Apple Genius!

  • IMac late 2013 shuts down spontaneously after 2 hours, offers sign in screen

My recently purchased late 2013 iMac with Yosemite works very well but after a while, approximately 2 hours gives a message that it will shut down unless I stop it by canceling. I have not scheduled such shutdown.
    I'd appreciate your advice.

  • Macbook shuts down unexpectedly

    Hi,
Probably for the last week or so my laptop keeps shutting down for some unknown reason. It would be random and not when I'm doing a specific thing. I don't know how to solve the problem so if anyone can help i would appreciate it.

Mine is doing this too. Only on battery though. There might be like half an hour or more left on the battery then it just dies. I have to turn it back on just as you describe.
Couple things I've tried that have made it do it less often:
    Shutdown computer.
    Remove AC.
    Remove Battery.
Hold Power button for 10 seconds.
    Put Battery in.
    Plug AC in.
Hold Command + Option + P + R while booting until you hear startup chime twice.
See how that goes. Mine is getting taken back - it's already been in the shop twice for the screen flickering issue - now the screen flickering has stopped but sometimes the screen goes black for one or two seconds then comes back on and other times it shuts off like this. I tell you what if mine is still playing up after this time I'm demanding to have mine replaced.

  • MacBook shuts down unexpectedly when the MagSafe is touched or removed

Hi, I got my new MacBook during November of 2009 but two weeks ago it started shutting down by itself once I touch the magsafe of the macbook or remove the magsafe. All it needs is a simple touch and it shuts down. When it does shut down, the light indicator doesn't come on anymore. I have to keep removing the magsafe, and plugging it back in like 20 times until it starts charging again. So now I just let it fully charge every time I use it since any sudden movement will cause it to shut down. I will be making an appointment next week at the apple store because I had no time to go these past 2 weeks. I never dropped it and take good care of it. I am just wondering what might be the cause of this? I hope they do not take weeks to fix the mac since I have a lot of homework to do... Thanks!

Anything is possible, but a firmware issue is not very probable.
Did Apple troubleshoot and repair your Mac? It's not the iBook as listed in your profile is it?
If Apple recently did the repairs and the problem persist then you should contact them, as they are obligated to fix it.
Did they for sure rule out the Magsafe adapter?
Which board did they replace? The logic board or just the DC board? Or both?

  • MacBook shuts down abruptly after some time, then has problems starting

I have 13" MacBook that I'm having some problems with. I have OS X and Windows XP in a dual boot configuration, and the problem happens in either OS. I can only use the computer for anything from 3 to 30 minutes before it suddenly shuts down.
When this first happens, I get trouble restarting it. It often just comes as far as intialising the DVD-ROM (you hear the sound), then it shuts off again. It can take up to ten starts before it powers up again. And then it's just a matter of time before the whole thing starts again. This happens regardless if I have the charger connected or not, or if I use just the charger and remove the battery.
At first it was thought that the battery was faulty, and I received a new one last spring. However, the problem quickly returned, and I haven't bother to do anything more about it before now. Suffice to say, I miss using my shiny MacBook, and I hope that someone can point me out in the right direction. As the computer is 2 years this may, I doubt I can get it repaired for free on the warranty(?).
Long post, but I hope I've explained the problem thourough enough. I believe I did the SMC reset and software update last summer, though I'm not sure which revision I'm on. If there's any more information I can provide, please let me know. It just takes some time to get the computer to stay on long enough to check stuff

  • Shut down WLAN after business hours

    Hello,
We have recently deployed a vWLAN controller (AIR-CTVM-K9) and AIR-CAP2602I-A-K9 access points at all our sites.  Since we are a retail operation I want to make the WLAN unavailable after business hours.  The Cisco sales promo material mentions this as a capability but I can't find any supporting documentation.
How would I set this up?

There are several methods to achieve this and this depends on how your network is setup and how much technical skills you have:
    1.  MS AD:  You can specify time and dates when authentication happens;
    2.  Cisco EnergyWise:  You can specify what time of day(s) to enable the Cisco switch to provide PoE to the AP.  When specified, the switch will disable power to the port.
    3.  You can enable time-based ACL to disable the dynamic interface of your AP.  Your AP will still be able to broadcast the SSID but it will NOT accept any clients (or the clients will get 169.X.X.X IP addresses).
    Finally,
    4.  If you have WCS/NCS or Prime Infrastructure, you can specify the time and date when the radio of the APs go up or down.

    Hi DBolick5,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your Mac is not starting up after installing an update, first try booting into Safe Mode:
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
    Starting up in Safe Mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), follow these steps.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without holding any keys during startup.
    Regards,
    Jeremy

after immediately start up, maybe less than 30 seconds, the menu comes up asking if i want to restart/shutdown/sleep/cancel and if i don't cancel immediately the computer shuts down.
if i cancel, the menu shows up after about 30 seconds.
i have checked the energy saver prefs and everythign is set at 15 min.
