MacBook shuts down unexpectedly when the MagSafe is touched or removed
Hi, I got my new MacBook during November of 2009 but two weeks ago it started shutting down by itself once I touch the magsafe of the macbook or remove the magsafe. All it needs is a simple touch and it shuts down. When it does shut down, the light indicator doesn't come on anymore. I have to keep removing the magsafe, and plugging it back in like 20 times until it starts charging again. So now I just let it fully charge every time I use it since any sudden movement will cause it to shut down. I will be making an appointment next week at the apple store because I had no time to go these past 2 weeks. I never dropped it and take good care of it. I am just wondering what might be the cause of this? I hope they do not take weeks to fix the mac since I have a lot of homework to do... Thanks!
Anything is possible, but a firmware issue is not very probable.
Did Apple troubleshoot and repair your Mac? It's not the iBook as listed in your profile is it?
If Apple recently did the repairs and the problem persist then you should contact them, as they are obligated to fix it.
Did they for sure rule out the Magsafe adapter?
Which board did they replace? The logic board or just the DC board? Or both?

Macbook shuts down unexpectedly when battery reaches 20% and unplugged
I noticed this behavior after installing the Bonjour Update 2010-001 (version 1.0) and the Remote desktop client update (version 3.3.2) last night. Upon reaching 20% of battery capacity, the macbook shuts down, and will not restart until it is plugged in. There is no warning, it just turns off.
Does anyone know what's going on?
Message was edited by: incomethaxWow! I recently had this same EXACT problem and called Apple Care about it last week and said that they cannot do anything about it since my battery cycle is too high ( only 315) ! MacBook is the same model as yours. I finally brought mine in today at a local genius bar (Otay Ranch) and they replaced the battery even though My Mac's just a little over a month its 1 year warranty. I will now calibrate this battery and see if the same problem persists. When I called about this problem, the Apple Care rep says that he has never seen this problem before but now I just saw this and glad that I wasn't the only one, maybe its a faulty design on the first generation Unibody with removable batteries (Late 2008)

Black Macbook (Late 2006) shuts down unexpectedly when plugged in!
I have been having trouble with my Macbook shutting down unexpectedly for the past two weeks and got it checked out and it turned out it was the battery that needed replacement. So I'm using it without the battery but connected to the Magsafe adapter while my new battery gets mailed to me but suddenly it shuts down anyways! What could it be?
Hello Brine,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
According to the Apple support document below, just bumping the A/C adaptor could cause the Macbook to disconnect and shutdown. Are you positive that this isn't happening?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2332?viewlocale=en_US
Otherwise, you may just have to wait and see if the issue persists when the new battery arrives.

My macbook (aluminum 13inch) shuts down unexpectedly when battery 45%
hello there,
my macbook 13inch-aluminum, 2 years old, shuts down unexpectedly when battery state is at about 45% and when an external hard drive (western digital passport 160gb) is connected, or an iphone on a usb port. This occurs only when my mac is running on battery power. I suppose same thing will happen with any other usb device connected. Last time the same thing happened, i did not have any usb device connected onto my laptop.
My battery details are
Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 2377
Fully charged: No
Charging: Yes
Full charge capacity (mAh): 3234
Health Information:
Cycle count: 276
Condition: Normal
Battery Installed: Yes
Amperage (mA): 376
Voltage (mV): 12249
I tried to reset my SMC settings as well, but this did not help. Any thoughts please?Your full charge capacity is about 75% of what it should be, even though your cycle count is comparatively low. If you still have AppleCare, you ought to be able to convince them on the phone or at your local Genius Bar that you have a defective battery, because your capacity should be much higher at that number of cycles.
If you do not have AppleCare, you will probably have to pay for replacement. -
MacBook Shuts Down Unexpectedly After Inserting DVD
I was about to watch my new TRANSFORMERS movie on DVD and after about 3 minutes of watching, my MacBook just shuts down immediately, so i tried the second time. This time, i was plugging in my ipod to recharge while the movie was paused. Once i got back and started to play my movie, the whole screen turned black (but the movie was still playing), and it shuts down again. Can anyone please tell me why??
I have JUST started experiencing the same problems where I'll insert a DVD and the computer may or +may not+ shut down unexpectedly in the middle of playing. When I try to restart with the dvd still in the laptop, it may also shut down again before I can successfully log in. This has also happened with several different DVDs over the last 4 days, so I don't think it's tied to the DVD itself...
I also have the computer on, plugged in, with the battery taken out, and with an external harddrive and mouse plugged in. Are the peripherals making it worse?
I bought my macbook in the US with a 3 year applecare plan and am now living in Beijing, China. I would like to be able to get this issue fixed, but don't know where to begin with calling a place in China. What is the protocol? -
MBP shuts down unexpectedly when on battery
Today my MBP shuts down unexpectedly when on battery. It started at about 50%. I seems to happen if I don't a thing for a short while when I read something or so. I most of the time when using mu MBP have it on the net cord but today I wanted to work the battery.
Does anyone know what it could be? I have searched in the forum but the answers hasn't been satisfying. I find it weird that I have to use the keyboard or the track pad to keep going. Not sure what the cause is but you can try resetting the SMC.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN??That many cycles is amazing service. A battery that consistently shuts down at about the same charge level percentage every time probably has a bad cell (that info came form an Apple technician) and needs to be replaced.
It's given you far longer service than many of us get, and may be a new record around here for cycle count! -
Macbook shuts down unexpectedly after an hour of use
I've had my MacBook since 2006, and I've had some minor problems now and then.
But since few days ago, my mac shuts down unexpectedly after I use it for about an hour.
at first I thought that maybe it's the fan, cause I've never cleaned the fan since the day I've bought it and my mac gets pretty hot after a while. but it used to work just fine when it got even hotter.
now I'm guessing maybe it's the battery? I've also never replaced the battery to a new one, cause I've almost always used power adapter instead of using battery alone. but I think I've heard it somewhere that the battery still dies even when you only use power adapter. is this true?
I usually just turn mac right back on when it shuts down, and it goes well for about 30 mins and then it shuts down again.
could anyone please be kind enough to tell me if it is the battery that's causing this such a frustrating problem? I don't know if this would help figure out the problem, but this is what battery info says,
Battery Information:
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 3674
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 3648
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 12443
Cycle Count: 105Thank you so much for answering! I've actually read your answer to other similar forum, and have just installed iStatPro. it says that my fan is "exhaust" and at 0rpm. do i HAVE to replace the fan to a new one? can I just open up my mac and clean out the fan? if so, would you recommend this instead of buying a new fan? one last thing, if I buy a new fan, is it easy for me to replace it by myself? again, thank you so much for your answer.

Windows 7 shuts down unexpectedly when I close my lid
I recently installed Windows 7 Professional x86, and recently when I close my lid my computer instead of going to sleep, which is what the power setting is set to, it shuts down. When I open my computer, I have to turn my computer on and when Windows loads, I get the 'Windows shut down unexpectedly' window. Has anyone heard of this happening or has had it happen to them or knows how to fix it?
Didn't find anything in the Action Center. But did find similar events that match the times in the Event View that said the following:
'The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error
could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power
unexpectedly.'
They all has the source as being Kernel-Power, Event ID of 41, and Task Category of (63). Searched Microsoft's website and it didn't return any results. Despite this, it hasn't happened since I originally posted this. Hopefully it doesn't start doing it again. Although one thing I remember it saying on the 'Windows has experienced an unexpected shutdown' window was something about a blue screen. But I never saw one. And I don't know what would even cause this to happen cause I never had this problem when I had Windows XP Pro on my Mac. -

Macbook shuts down automatically when playing flash
Macbook with OSX 10.8.3 shuts down automatically when playing flash
Hi
Have you solve your problem yet? Mine was the same - it's Dockables "fault"
Were you able to boot into Safe Mode, by pressing and holding Shift key at Start up, I think you need to press and hold a while, till you see a progress bar below the Apple logo.
Then you can quickly go and delete all the Dockables.
If you found another way to boot up, also delete Dockables immediately.

It appears that almost every time I try to upload a picture from my finder into Shutterfly, or post one on Facebook my Chrome browser shuts down unexpectedly. I have scanned for virus (none), I have cleared my cashe and cookies and all that, I have rebooted and have checked for updates... Nothing is working. I get the following information in an error report, which is like foreign language to me.

Each of the third party chips will run the computer all day long in the main slot, as will the Apple 1 gig chip. I can do heavy intensive work with only 1 gig and never have a problem.
I have also run memory tests on all three and they all pass with flying colors. Certainly it might be reasonable to try an apple RAM next, but at Twice the price, I'm slow to go that route. Both of the third party chips appear to be in good shape. They all are DDR2 PC5300 667Ghz. Both of the chips were procured from stores that I have used for 20 years and are well known to be high quality brands.
My thought is that there may be a problem with the upper RAM slot connector. Does anyone know if you can start the machine with RAM only in that slot? I might try that as another troubleshooting effort. -
13"Macbook shuts down unexpectedly 10.5.8
I have a MacBook 13" (2008 I think) running 10.5.8.
In January I had to have a new logic board after it failed to switch on after a period of running very slow and freezing.
All ok for some time, but then I started to get unexpected shut downs/restarts. Both with and without power supply connected. Also had the first 2 instances of the emergency shut down window and kernal panic notification. Every couple of days it just restarts all on its own. I think is when I am seeing a video or have several applications open at once, but not sure.
I have run diagnostics and first aid and verifications etc and all comes back ok.
My partner uses PC and says a PC behaves like this when it overheats. Is that possible for this Mac?
Is this a hardware problem?
Thanks.
