Macbook slow and noisy

Dear all,
I got a white MacBook since early 2009.
Since a few months, it became quite slow and noisy.
At the beginning, it started to do so when screensaver was running or when playing videos on on the web. Launching applications is taking up to 30-60 sec (iTunes, for example).
At the moment, it gets very noisy and slow even while doing normal operation, such as visiting no videos/no images pages. Currently it is used only during evening or weekends, but not always extensively.
Any solution? Problem of RAM memory?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Davide

I would open Activity Monitor (Utilities folder) and select the CPU tab....from that window choose 'All Processes' and look for a background process that may be using too much CPU%....
...also download and install this widget...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20364/istat-pro
....it will give some system info....like fan speed....
...if some process is stuck/hung and running up the CPU it would explain the fan and the slowness....
...you might also reset the SMC following these instructions...

  • NAS200 is SLOW and noisy - I'm disappointed

I am disappointed with my new NAS200.  It is very slow!  The max transfer rate I have attained is 3.6 Mbps.  Inspite of a 100 Mbps network copper connection with my home desktop PC and the NAS200, it can only attain that speed!
And it is noisy!  I have configured the NAS200 to turn off the fan when after 10 minutes of drive inactivity, it seems that it does not conform with that configuration.  EVEN if all my PC's are off - meaning there is no existing connection to the NAS200 except for its own connection to the router!

Note that the back of a harddisk is the coolest place on it... The hottest place on a hard disk is on top, right above the spindle of the disk. While some disks may keep pretty cool (especially "green" disks that run at lower RPMs), most "regular" disks get too hot inside a NAS200, especially after a long time when it gets clogged up with dust or the puny fan gives out.
I'm glad it works for you, Robert-Perth, but I think the NAS200 is indeed slow and noisy, and gets too hot.

    Frequent NAS200 Answers:
    1. DISABLE the "convert failed logins to guest logins" option to fix permission problems.
    2. NEVER insert or remove hard disks while the power is on. NAS200 doesn't support hot swapping.
    3. ALWAYS use the power button to turn the NAS200 off, don't just unplug it.
    4. Don't trust RAID. Make BACKUPS!
    5. To ACCESS the disks directly, you will need ext2 and/or XFS file systems. I recommend using SystemRescueCD.
    6. Disks will get HOT with standard fan, use "green" disks or consider replacing the fan.
    7. FTP server is insecure and doesn't work behind a NAT router. Use my firmware and SCP instead.
    8. MY FIRMWARE supports SSH shell prompt and SCP for secure file access, and allows running other software.

  • Why is my macbook Slow and fan always running

I recently upgraded to Mavericks, and since then my computer has been slow and lagging a lot. I see the perpetual spinning beach ball more than I would like. I have done everything I can think of within my knowledge to rectify the problem but it still seems slow to me. I have unistalled apps, cleared caches, run an antivirus, run onyx and cleanmymac applications. I don't know what else I can do. I also find that my fan is running constantly and when I look at the activity monitor nothing is eating my CPU, in fact it is always below 10%. Here is my most recent Etrescheck. PLEASE HELP!! I'm open to all and any suggestions. Thank YOu

Installing CleanMyMac will corrupt your system. I know of no way to recover from its effects other than to reinstall OS X and other essential software. "Essential" is defined to specifically exclude CleanMyMac as well as all similarly ill-conceived "cleaning" products that are likely to have similar effects. Never install such junk on a Mac.
Erasing your Mac will have the benefit of eradicating it, the useless Avast garbage, and Internet Plug-Ins as well.
You are likely to need more memory. 2 GB is barely sufficient to run any OS later than Snow Leopard. Your MacBook can address as much as 8 GB and I recommend at least 4 GB.

  • MacBook slow and or freezing

In the past several days I've noticed my Mac getting really slow and/or freezing.  This primarily happens when Safari is running but it doesn't seem to be any particular website causing the problem.  I've checked for malware using BitDefender.  Anyone else having problems or know of a solution?

  • Macbook slow and shuts down when battery indicator is not empty

    Hi everyone,
I have a 17'' macbook pro bought mid June 2007.
Three weeks ago I noticed that my macbook pro would shut down at 20% battery (if I was not plugged) and would not start back until I plugged it in. I figured it was a battery problem. However, my macbook started getting really slow with the little 'volleyball' icon appearing more and more often without having to use lots of different of programs in parallel.
Also last week I realized that now my macbook pro shuts down automatically at 67% battery! I checked the little button behind the battery and when this happens it shows to me 3 out 5 light indicator. So I'm guessing that the battery is not dead and yet my computer shuts down.
I resetted my SMC (I think that's what it's called) and repaired my disk... I have not reformatted it though.
Can someone help me out? Is the fact that my mac is slow related to its shutting down prematurely?
For info: my battery is 2y old and has 360 cycles.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!
    Cheers
    aqualover

    Good on resetting SMC.
You should properly calibrate your battery:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284
If that doesn't fix the problem, contact AppleCare about a replacement. Battery warranties were extended to 2 years and maybe you still have a warranty:

    Hope this helps...

  • Macbook slow and horrible battery, downgrade to snow leapord?

So I have a late 2008 13" macbook currently running Mavericks (2.4 core 2 due/8gb ram). Its performance is getting dated, and battery life is awful even on new battery (1.5-2 hours). My usage is not heavy, mostly web browsing/email and sometimes some rare photo editing and I'd like to stretch this mac out another year.
To do this, one thing that is certain is an SSD upgrade. Now my question is though, which route should I go after that:
Option 1: Clean install mavericks/yosemite and hope the SSD upgrade is sufficient with the old cpu/new software
    or
Option 2: Clean install of Snow leapord even though support has ceased. If i go this route, my 8gb ram will not be compatible correct? I think 6gb was the max (unless the firmware update to allow 8gb can still be used in snow leapord?)
Either way, I liked snow leapord the best, and dont need all the new IOS integration since i'm an android user anyway. I'd just like to hear the communities thoughts.
Has anyone done this downgrade to SL from mavericks, is it worth it?
Whats the best way to do this with the new SSD?
Would snow leopard help my battery life?
I'm not sure i have the original leopard disk, but i do have my snow leopard upgrade disc to use for clean install if that would work?
    Any comments are appreciated, Thanks.

  • Macbook slow and icons lag and fan noise and windows performance normal but the fan noise still there. Please tell me what is the problem

Hi , i have late 2011 model of 13 inch macbook pro. Installled mountain lion . Around 200 gb of free space. Now when i start my mac os the icons lag and it takes time to open up even scrolling the mouse you can see it drag and also the fan runs at high rpm .The cpu processesor runs at peak. When i switch on the windows the fan noise still there but the performance is good. Please advice me what might be the problem and what shall i do to solve it.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Macbook pro runs slow and itunes wont open

My macbook pro froze and went to a black screen while I was using quicktime so I forced shut down and rebooted and now it runs really slow and itunes and quicktime wont open.  I am completely updated

Your MBP should be able to accept 6 GB RAM.  I suggect that you install the maximum.  Yosemite should run more efficiently as a result.
I note that you have Novatel and Sierra wireless installed.  If you do not need one, delete it.
    Ciao.

  • Help!  My Macbook is running slow and glitchy lately

My macbook has been burning through my battery when I am running only one or two programs and even when the lid is closed and it is supposed to be on stand by.  My programs have been glitchy lately also.  Sometimes they run okay and at other times they are extremely slow and resource heavy though I don't know why.  I know that my macbook is older but thus far it has been a great computer and I would really like to squeeze a couple more years out of it.  Can you please give me some advice to help my computer run better with Yosemite?  I have included my computer stats and a EtreCheck for those who know what to look for on my computer.  Thanks for the help in advance.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

  • My macbook pro and iphone4 after newest ios update has had wifi issues, very very snail pace slow

um i recently last week? updated my macbook pro and my iphone 4 to lastest ios, and ever since then my wifi has been slow,
by this i mean, when i click anything, it takes a long long time to load a page, and even my facebook (arrived via bookmarks bar) so i load the same way as before, page often loads imcomplete, or not at all, on my iphone its so bad i cant even check my email, or the weather app, but on my ipod4, it works fine, cuz i have not updated the ios on the ipod touch 4th gen
is anyone else having these issues? so far ive been able to confirm (via xbox 360) that wifi signal is fine, strong and normal..... did apple screw up my devices? and if so? please tell me how i fix this, streaming my weekly 13 episodes of tv shows is now like dead slow, with every 5-8 seconds of video watching, theres another 30-40 seconds of SPINNING circle... i am so fed up
im a creature of habit, ive not changed the way i do things, the location of my computer, nothing, everything is as it was 2 weeks ago.... some-buddy help!?

I refer you to the TM expert
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/14.html
As a extra precaution I would copy the user file folders of Music, Documents, Pictures etc to another external drive and disconnect, just in case.
Always maintain TWO backups of your data at all times, since your messing with one, you need another until your back at two again.

  • MacBook Pro being really slow and vert little free RAM.

    Hi,
Just recently my MacBook Pro has been running really slowly when navigating between applications and tabs in safari. I checked to see how much RAM was free and it said only 30MB. I have no more apps open or things running than I normally do. This Mac is 6 months old but my old mac that was nearly 3 years old tended to run quicker, and as mentioned, I have no more apps running than I previously had. Maybe Word, Excel, iTunes and Safari. Can anyone help explain what might be making it slow and what might be hogging all the RAM?
    Thanks
    Matt

I ran the Etrereport and this is what i got back.

  • Macbook Pro mid-2012 Slow, and laggy

My Macbook has been running slow, and laggy aswell. I don't know whats wrong with it. I took my Macbook to the store where I bought it to see if they could fix it. After 4 days in the warehouse I came to take it back, and they said that we didn't find anything wrong with the hardware, but something with the software. They said that I had to reinstall it, but they couldn't cuz it was not included in the insurance. When I came back home, I did a backup, erased everything, and did a fresh install of Mavericks(took 1 day cuz it was slow and laggy). When My macbook reinstalled the problem was still there. It was much better before the reinstallation, but still a little slow. I also ran disc utility but it affect the problem. I also have another probelm is when I put my macook in sleep, I close the lid and then it gets hot, like if I'm playing a game or something which I don't. The light is turned off when I'm using my mac, it gets a little dim when I put my Mac to sleep with the lid open. When I close the lid the light gets bright and it shows the pulse like pattern at random points. I had to turn my mac off cuz I take it to school, and when I take it out from my bag its hot like a fry pan. The overheat also affects my battery life time in a high degree. I had 80% when I closed the lid and put it in my bag, and it got 22% when I took it out. I also did some search up with no luck so I hope you guys can help me, please, any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance

I was referring to this link that I posted earlier:

What about the problem when I close the lid it starts getting hot, like the processor is working at its limits???
Run an Apple Hardware Test,  that may develop a clue:

Also what about the caches, because it was written that it can slow down mac's performance if they are corrupted, and I don't know if the are corrputed.
One eliminates that as a possibility by cleaning them. A Safe boot will do that.  Also look in the 'Safe Mac' link, the last entry titled "Clear Caches".
    Ciao.
