Macbook slow since Yosemite...EtreCheck included

My MacBook Air (bought this year) was fine until Yosemite. Now it is slow as the old microsoft OS I got rid of! Can anyone take a look at the EtreCheck copied below and tell me what I should do to fix this?
By the way, this is my first Mac and I am NOT exactly familiar with it yet. I did not read up on it but just started using when I got it. All was well then, however, until I installed Yosemite (and made a few changes for recording voice with a microphone, which did not work either)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.  - Robin -

This is 'adware' that you may want to remove…

Soundflower is out of date (from 2012), update or use the uninstaller if you don't use it (the download has a removal tool IIRC).

Also check that you have the latest version of the com.AndreaElectronics.driver.SamsonUSBAudioPlugin…

Symantic have a lot of background jobs & system extensions loaded - are you sure that is 100% up to date? Their software hasn't stopped you installing adware that will try to inject adverts into your Mac. Are you really sure that running all those additional tasks is helping you? They all add to the system load and have a reputation of using resources that decrease performance (I wonder if the 'SymDaemon' is part of Norton - it is in the top memory usage).

  • Macbook slow since Yosemite

I installed Yosemite a month or so ago and since then my computer has been running extremely slowly. During start up it also will sometimes have half the screen looking very strange (lines going down...) or say that it needs to run maintenance before logging in. I ran an etresoft report, which is pasted below:
    Problem description:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
Part 1 of 8 done at ... sec
Part 8 of 8 done at ... sec
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. Wait for the final message
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the last message you saw. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Mid 2009 macbook slow since yosemite upgrade

I am getting a little tired of the spinning beach ball, my formerly well performing macbook is so slow since I upgraded it.
I have 4Gb ram, activity monitor suggests I am not low on that.
It is particularly slow when I start up anything new; when an email comes in the whole thing grinds to a halt.
3rd party programs like Chrome seem to be sucking the life out of it, I have checked it is up to date and it is.
Is this a common experience and what have others done to speed things up?
System spec: Yosemite version 10.10, processor 2.13 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb SDRAM
    15Gb disk space free.
    I have repaired disk permissions.
    Maura

The large number of problems with System items looks suspicious: I'd strongly suggest a reinstall of Yosemite. (Make sure that you have a backup of all your files; e.g. a Time Machine backup.)

  • Macbook running slow since Yosemite (another one)

Hello, I see I am one of many, many people whose Mac (Macbook) is running very slow since I upgraded to Yosemite. Unfortunately I'm not a technical user, but I can say it just took 28 minutes to boot up my MB, login, open the EtreCheck-3 app which I downloaded a few days ago (took hours), run the EtreCheck and then open this page in Safari.
If I had hours during the working day to call Apple Support I would, but I don't so if any kind soul can see anything at all from the output below I would be eternally grateful. I also read Luis_Mercato's thread for about 8 pages until it did my head in. However, if there are existing threads, steps, guides that I should try first please point me to them and I will try my best.
    Thanks in advance..

Most likely, the startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Slow MacBook Pro since Yosemite. CPU almost 90%. Fans on.

My MacBook Pro has become very slow since installing Yosemite. Fans are on very often In Activity Monitor. Sometimes, I sometimes see cloudd taking up 90% of the CPU (as you can see from below). Other times, it's a web page gobbling up CPU.
Can someone please offer a suggestion to get my laptop get it's MOJO back? Already reset the SMC and PRAM

    Hey Ogelthorpe,
Thanks so much! I uninstalled CleanMyMac 2 and restarted. But, fans are still blowing and CPU still unreasonably high. The fans came on as soon as I restarted - and stayed on for minutes. I ran Activity Monitor to see what was running. It's appears that one of three things are at the top of the list using up a high CPU % - either cloudd (was as high as 90%),  WindowServer or Flash Player for Safari.
As I post this, it's been 15 minutes since reboot - and the fans have calmed down. But, it seems that in the past, it's just a matter of time before some process kicks in - and it's another episode of Fans Gone Wild.
One more piece of the puzzle that may add to your diagnosing the patient (and I didn't know if this was related or if I should start a new post for it): Since upgrading, I now see a popup when I reboot. It says, "com.apple.iCloudHelper.xpc wants to use the "login" keychain". But, here's the weird part - it's not the regular password for the laptop. To get it to go away, I have to enter a password that I have not used in 2-3 years. Very strange (cue Twilight Zone music...)
    Any suggestions for next steps?
Latest and greatest EtreCheck (15 minutes after reboot - and cloudd went away).

  • Wifi and iTunes incredibly slow since Yosemite

interesting it posted this as a unique problem..  my wifi and iTunes are incredibly slow on my 17" macbook pro since the yosemite update.  was taking 20 minutes to download a movie from iTunes now it's 8 plus hours and iTunes is sooooooo slow.  what's up?  how do i fix it?

Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.
Revert to a Previous OS X - Yosemite
    Revert Yosemite to Mavericks
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.
The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

  • MacBook Air slow since Yosemite update...

    Hello everyone,
My relatively new MacBook Air (purchase just over a year ago) has become almost completely unresponsive and freezes when doing even the smallest of tasks - opening numbers and PDF documents, of checking mail. This seems to have happened since up updated the latest Yosemite and has made the computer almost unusable (having to write this on my windows laptop). Any suggestions? I read somewhere that there can be a problem with the new software and old programmes not working together?
    Thanks!
    Liam

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Macbook slow since installing Yosemite

    Problem description:
Since upgrading to Yosemite, my Macbook is very slow, especially when trying to open webpages.  I installed Yosemite because I bought my daughter an iPad and had to upgrade to Yosemite in order to do the Family Share thing.  Ever since, my Macbook has been incredibly slow (no issues with any other of our Apple devices or with using my work-issued PC, so it's not my WiFi connection).  I'm wondering if there's a bunch of junk on my system--I use it mostly for email, internet and storing photos and I see all the things in my EtreCheck that were "killed due to memory pressure."  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
Here are the results of my EtreCheck:

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Macbook Pro running VERY slow since Yosemite, why?

Ever since I installed Yosemite my Macbook Pro 2010 has been extremely laggy and slow. It's especially noticeable with several applications running but even without, it is very slow to respond to commands.
What's the problem and how do I fix it?
    Thanks

  • Mac Book Pro running slow since Yosemite

Well sine installing Yosemite, my Mac is slow. I am not impressed with the new look and feel. All the minor changes seems to make my life and Mac more difficult. I have checked my storage space and I have lots of memory to be running Yosemite. I have checked the user group settings to ensure there are no programs running at start up, which use to be instant now takes a few minutes when turning on and I have to sign into my Mac. If I knew it was going to be like this I would have just installed Windows with the hassle.
I would like Maverick back..... or any better suggestions as I am LOVE my Macbook pro with retina display and want it back to working in prime condition prior to the Yosemite.
Here as some of the issues:
Turn on time 1-2 minutes plus I have to sign in

Most programs are slow or shut down randomly such as pages and keynote
Synching with iPad and iPhone not always quick even know everything is cloud based (i.e.. took a picture the other day on iPhone, show on iPad still not on my laptop)
Just hate the look - but I guess I can live with that... or if someone knows how to make the tool bar clear again that would be great, not happy with the white.
These are just the surface of my issues, but the speed is the main item for all programs right now.

Download and run EtreCheck http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck and post its result here. Hopefully it'll shad some light on your issue.

  • Macbook slow on Yosemite 10.10.1

I have a MacBook Pro (early 2010, 4GB, running Yosemite 10.10.1). I know it's old so I try to keep it as bare as possible - I have no additional apps on it other than Office and a Mono Developer program. I have 126GB free storage out of 320GB.
A few days ago it was running fine. Slower than any new computers but still completely operable. I could program, while having word open, while using the internet. It has in the last 2 days become unbearably slow. I mean, if I have just Word open, I will get a line written before I get the beach ball and 2 minutes later I can resume writing my next line. I had not downloaded anything in those two days.
I've checked the CPU and there's nothing unusual, or high volume going on. Only perhaps 2% being used.
I've tried deleting additional files and will be deleting more later once I can sort out formatting a hard drive.
Can anyone recommend any steps from here? Should I downgrade the software? Revert back to the original state with time machine? Try something else? I'm not in a position to be able to buy a new one so that isn't an option.
Any additional information needed, please just ask. Any help is appreciated! Thanks
    [Edit]
I'm just updating to 10.10.2 in the case that it is that.

You are over working your RAM. Your machine should be able to take more RAM.
I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.
