Macbook slow to start-up and displays unusual start-up screen

Hey everyone,
For the last week or so my Macbook has been behaving strangely when I start it up from sleep: it displays the screen you would normally get after your battery has fully emptied and you have just powered up your computer again (I'm not 100% sure if that makes total sense..it's the screen with the white bars on the bottom that slowly fill up before it takes you to your login screen) This only happens when my Macbook has run out of charge and automatically goes to sleep and then I plug it in and power it up again, which is why I'm concerned because my computer is plugged in when this happens + the battery is fully charged. Also, the computer is very slow to start up and takes about a minute before I can properly log in (the screen freezes, sometimes it goes black for a couple of seconds and then it goes back to normal) and finally the computer seems to be a bit laggy at times and slower than usual. I have already verified my disk and repaired all the errors that came up (using Disk Utility), and this doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.
I am very confused and cannot figure out why this is happening; I've bought my Macbook only a year ago and I always take exceptional care of it. Has anyone else come across this problem before? If anyone could provide any input or help me figure out the cause, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your help in advance

Linc - Thank you so much for your response, at least I now understand what is causing this problem. I'm wondering if you know of a way to stop the computer from going into safe sleep (i.e turn this feature off) while it is plugged into AC power? This has never happened in the last 12 months that I've owned my Macbook and now I'm confused as to why this suddenly changed.
Thanks again in advance for your help

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Once you get it to turn on, I would check to see if there is a BIOS update available for your machine.

  • When receiving email, Thunderbird freezes and displays "Not Responding" in screen header. Adds popstate folder to account.

I'm running Thunderbird 31.6.0 on Windows 8.1 with BitDefender 2013.
    PROBLEM:
When getting email, Thunderbird freezes and displays "Not Responding" in screen header.
When TB is closed then reopened, a popstate folder (popstate-1.dat) is added to account. A new popstate folder appears with each crash/freeze, and as long as they are not deleted, they pile up with unique numbers (popstate-1.dat, popstate-2.dat, etc.).
    (see attached screenshot)
NOTE: I've included troubleshooting details below for all the fixes I tried, thinking it might be helpful to anyone who has a similar problem and is thinking about going down those paths. Ultimately, it seems that FIX ATTEMPT 5 is the winner.
    ==================================
    FIX ATTEMPT 1:
Following the suggestion in this archived mozilla support post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1026288, I restarted Thunderbird in Safe Mode (Help > Restart with Add-Ons disabled...), checking the "Disable all add-ons" and "Reset toolbars and controls" and clicking "Make Changes and Restart" button.
In Add-Ons Manager, BitDefender Toolbar now appears to be disabled.
    (see attached screenshot)
    But the problem persists.
    FIX ATTEMPT 2:
Following the suggestion in this archived mozilla support post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1016811, I clicked Help > Troubleshooting Information > Show Folder button. This opens a File Explorer window for 3I58b9dq.default (this is the "profile" folder) which contains panacea.dat and folderTree.json files.
I changed file names to panacea-changed.dat and folderTree-changed.json (rather than deleting them, in case I need to restore them), and I reopened Thunderbird.
This did not solve the problem -- and, furthermore, the profile folder seems to have automatically generated new panacea.dat and folderTree.json files to replace those for which I changed the filenames.
    FIX ATTEMPT 3:
Following the suggestion in this mozilla support post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1044774, I restarted Windows 8.1 in safe mode with networking enabled (using these instructions: http://www.howtogeek.com/107511/how-to-boot-into-safe-mode-on-windows-8-the-easy-way/.)
TB does not crash when Windows runs in safe mode, but the aspect ratio of my display is distorted; everything's really big and stretched horizontally, and my two displays are mirrored rather than extended. Running Windows perpetually in safe mode is not the ideal fix.
QUESTION 1: I understand that troubleshooting is supposedly done best in safe mode — What might I do in safe mode to diagnose the Thunderbird problem?
    FIX ATTEMPT 4:
This article https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#Symptoms, suggests that problems with Thunderbird associated with BitDefender can be solved by uninstalling and re-installing BitDefender.
Not really comfortable uninstalling and re-installing, I disabled Bitdefender (Settings button > Antivirus button > Shield tab > On-Access Scanning toggle Off) to see if that would work. It did not fix the problem.
QUESTION 2: Would uninstalling BitDefender be any different than disabling it?
    FIX ATTEMPT 5:
Create a Bitdefender Exclusion for the Thunderbird folder:
Settings button > Antivirus button > Exclusions tab > Excluded files and folders link > Add button > navigate to Thunderbird folder (c:\users\username\appdata\roaming\thunderbird) > Both radio button > Add button > OK button
THIS FIX DID THE TRICK! YAY!

FIX ATTEMPT #5 above did the trick, and now I see that it was the chosen solution for a similar post of the same problem at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1044774

  • The plastic hinge between my screen and the computer (macbook pro retina) is cracked and doesn't hold the screen anymore? Can Apple change it?

The hinge between my screen and my computer (macbook pro retina) has cracked and doesn't hold the screen anymore. Can I fix it without changing my screen. And if it's still on guarantee does Apple have to repair it?

Apple can fix any and all of their computers.  Whether it would be charged to you would be the question.   Do you have AppleCare?
Accidental damage is not covered by AppleCare.

  • MacBook slow to start up

MacBook is slow to start up and is starting to have freezing up issues... Any help would be appreciated.

This is too vague for a verdict.
First of all, why did you stop at 10.5.3? run software update and bring it to 10.5.8 but—
Slowness may have various reasons. One may be your internal disk, may be dying. This may be the pessimistic scenario, or one of them.
Another reason may be a corrupt system or disk is full, and there is little free space (must be at elast 10 % free space on disk or partition, system needs space for temporary files)
for example, if in View options, you choose ‘show status bar’ you may see how much free space you have (alternatively, select disk, right click on mouse, choose Info and you will see more info).
In any circumstance, one question: do you have a backup of your data? Are you prepared to restore your files if disk is damaged and dies soon? This is the first thing you must do. If answer is yes, you do have backup, then we may proceed. If no backup, do it as soon as possible. You MUST do that disregarding whether disk is still good or is about to die.

  • Macbook freezes at Start Up screen/Will not boot

I have a 13" MacBook purchased almost two years ago. The computer recently froze completely. I tried to restarted the computer but it would just go to the white start up screen (w/ Apple logo) over and over again. I turned it off completely and let it sit for a hour or so while it was plugged in. Now when I turn on the computer it will not turn on - it makes the Apple chime and goes to the white start up screen with grey logo.
Is there anything trouble shooting I can do to try and resolve this problem?

What operating system are you running please?

  • I have a several issues, which may be related, concerning slow Firefox startup, bookmarks, and display

Last weekend, I needed to go back to a restore point on my Windows 7 PC. Since then, I have had a number of issues. I'll outline them as best I can. I am using Firefox 23.0.1
    1) When I click the tray or desktop icons, it takes between 1 and 5 minutes for Firefox to load (in fact, this is true for Thunderbird as well, but not other programs, as I can tell).
    2) When Firefox starts, it is what I would call the bare bones display, not the usual for this version. In addition, my bookmarks aren't loaded. However, I can find the places.sqlite file
    3) Related to 2, and I think a big part of my problem, is that there are 2 (seemingly) complete profiles, both designated as default. I have tried to rename each one as not being the default, and that hasn't worked. One is an older one, and the other from Sunday when I restored.
I have not uninstalled and reinstalled, because it seems the problem is deeper than that (as I wrote above). I have also not reset, for the same reason. I don't think it's related to add-ons and extensions, as I have disabled all and nothing seems changed (slow start, display, etc)
I'm open to all thoughts and suggestions, and thanks in advance...

Note that if there is a problem with the profiles.ini that Firefox will create a new default profile.
What matters is whether all profiles present in the Firefox\profiles folder appear in the profiles.ini file and that the currently selected c profile is marked with Default=1
If a new (xxxxxxxxx.default) profile has been created then you can restore the previous profile by editing the path in the profiles.ini file to point to your previous profile.

You can also choose to stay with the new profile and transfer some personal data (files) from the old profile, see:

  • Yosemite slow load and display changes at logon screen

    Hi
I updated my Macbook Pro to Yosemite; since then at logon the display scale is bigger than my default, but once logged on the display changes smaller to my default.
At the logon I find that it takes longer to load after entering password etc; status bar rolls and taking about 30 seconds (instead of the 5 seconds previously in Mavericks).
Also find that after logon, it takes a few minutes to connect to the internet and be ready to use.
This never happened previously, was instant after logon could go straight into email or safari and work.
Is others experiencing this and what can I do to improve this?

  • Yoga 10 HD+ B8080-H - Slow Keyboard, No 3G and display dims

How can I speed up the keyboard response time.  The pointer speed is set at max, but has no effect on the response time of keyboard.
How do I get 3G on my tablet, which is supposed to be Wi-Fi and 3G.
The Display brightness is set to just about max and certainly starts off bright, but after a moment, it dims around the icons on the screen.  A couple of times, if I have been using the tablet for a length of time, it has become bright again but this is only momentarily.

  • ITunes Store is slow when returning sorting and display 50+ songs

    Hello
I frequently have problems whith iTunes Store searche results. For example today, I searched for Pitbull songs, and clicked on "display all" to get the list like display. Then I sorted the  200+ songs by clicking on popularity. Sorting was surprisingly slow. Using the scrollbar was also very slow, sometimes scrolling down continuously just after one click on the scrollbar, and more often laging.
My laptop has a Dual Core 2 processor @ 2.4GHz, 4Go of RAM, and a high quality WIFI signal, with win 7 64 bits. In addition no other software with high CPU usage were running  in background.
Does any one have noticed the same problem  ? Any advice to fix this.
    Thanks
    GaBo

I'm observing the same problem. iTunes is nearly frozen, especially podcasts make the system extremely slow, no downloads possible at all. Opening an album song list is also painfully slow. All this prevents me from buying from the store. Apple should be interested in this. Please note that I'm not using iTunes match!

  • MBP+External display - slow to wake up and re-recognize the 2nd screen

I am looking for a workaround to a minor annoyance that our windows counterparts don't suffer...
When I connect an external display to my MBP The MBP display goes blue, then the external one does and finally both are back to normal and I can see apps, background etc..
Not a big deal, until my laptop goes to sleep.
When I wake it, it goes through that whole routine again.
I assume this is a 'rediscovery' going on.
Is there any way to keep it from doing this when waking from sleep?
I promise not to secretly replace my external display for another while the machine is sleeping!

I promise not to secretly replace my external display for another while the machine is sleeping!
But that's precisely what the Mac thinks is going on. What happens if you power cycle the monitor immediately before waking the Mac? Does it alter the behavior?

  • Macbook pro wont start. grey screen then shuts off

I have been having some problems with my macbook when my battery would die and i would plug it in and try to turn it back on it would take forever to start back up. Sometimes i woudl have to unplug, take out the battery then put them back in and zap the pram and it would start. Then today it just started taking forever to restart so i shut it down and tried to restart now it starts goes to the grey screen and the little thing starts spinning and then about 5 sedc later it shuts itself down.
    PLEASE HELP

If the Apple Hardware test does not bring up any problems with the hardware, I would advise doing an archive and install before you zero out the drive and erase all of the data on it.
Some things to keep in mind:
If your computer shuts down while booted to the install disk (either the AHT or the installer) you're looking at a hardware problem.
If you need to erase and install or send it in for repair of a hardware problem, you will need to back up any data you do not want to lose before doing so. If you are unable to do backups, an apple store or authorized service provider can do data retrieval for you. Bear in mind this is an optional service and you would be charged a fee for data retrieval.
