Macbook software update

I have a macbook from 2008 and it will not update past 10.5.8.  Also, Itunes will not update past 10.6 to get my new ipad to sync with it. Any ideas?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
     Snow Leopard General Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
       2. 1GB of memory
       3. 5GB of available disk space
       4. DVD drive for installation
       5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
           fees may apply.
       6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
           terms apply.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
     Lion System Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
           or Xeon processor
       2. 2GB of memory
       3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
       4. 7GB of available space
       5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
         1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
         2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
         3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
         4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
         5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
         6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
         7. Xserve (Early 2009)
     Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

I'd recommend you boot from the Mac OS X Install DVD and run the Disk Utility to Repair the boot disk. Repeat until no repairs are applied and you have a clean installation. If items were found for repair, then re-boot from your normal boot disk and apply the 10.6.7 update. If no issues were found with your boot disk by Disk Repair, do an Archive and Install re-installation of Mac OS X once booted from the Mac OS X Install DVD. The Archive and Install approach will keep your login accounts and preserve your main settings. Once the new OS is installed, run software update repeatedly until all fixes are applied and no new ones are found.

  • MacBook software update after OS X 10.5.8?

I have a white MacBook running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 and when I check for a software update, it says there isn't one.  My computer meets the requirements for Snow Leopard but I can't download it because it says it requires OS X 10.6.  I also can't download the latest version of iTunes until I get OS X 10.6.  I don't completely understand how the Mac Software works and since I have an older computer, I can't find any information on the Apple website that helps.  HELP!

Phone the online Apple Store and order a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD.

  • MacBook Software Update Pref icon fouled up

Just rec'd a MacBook over the weekend and am very happy so far.
One oddity has my attention and that is the Software Update icon in the System Preferences "show all" window. It appears as a light switch icon, with the usual update icon partially showing in the lower left of the light switch icon.
    Weird.
No such effect on my Intel iMac on same OS. I'm posting in MacBook since in my case it seems 'book specific...

I had my startup disk icon with the light switch on my iMac. I am not sure whether your problem is the same as one I had, but I followed the recommendation on the following link, and it restored the correct startup disk icon.

  • Macbook software update reboots then acts like its never been used before!!

HELP - perfectly working Macbook 10.5.1 - did software update, computer rebooted, and then presented me with the create account/register screens that you would get if you just bought the thing or reloaded the OS.
Any ideas what happened and how to go back? I don't want to create any new user accounts and overwrite anything!

I booted in safe mode and was able to see my accounts, but logging into either of them took me back to the registration loop.
I decided to restore from TM backup from 6pm last night. I think the issue was caused because I had a couple of crashed programs and did the system update- somehow it messed something up.

  • Retina Macbook software update system preferences not updating.

I have a brand new retina 13" MacBook Pro but for some reason software update is stuck. In system preferences it reads "Last update on Monday March 18, 2013". Even though I click update now then it checks the app store and there are no updates in that section it always shows that Monday date never the current date.
Anyone know how to fix this?

It's telling you the last update was applied Monday March 18, 2013 and that there are no more updates right now for your machine.
You don't need to manually check, it will nag you about updates automatically.
If you need the current date and time, there are plenty of apps and/or the Finder menu clock to tell you that.

  • Macbook Software Update 1.1

So a few weeks ago I did the 1.1 software update with a few other updates. Everything went well - error free- I restarted and went on with my business. Then yesterday I checked for any new software updates. And the 1.1 update was there again - ***? So I installed it again, bam, restart and good to go, right? But every time I check the software updates, it says I haven't installed the 1.1 update. I have probably installed it 5 times, but it keeps showing up!!! Anyone else have this problem?

OOOH! I found the answer on another post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6142512&#6142512
    What is says is:
    Using the terminal
    cd /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBTopCase.kext/Contents
then: ln -s PlugIns Plugins (NOTE: I had to do "sudo ln -s PlugIns Plugins" and then provide my admin password)
The problem seems to be with the Case Sensitive formatting that I, and presumably you, have on our hard drives.

  • Macbook software update problem

    I had the same issue.
How did you figure this out?
I was on the phone for almost two hours (mostly waiting) with support and they simply came up with 'Archive' and 'Store' and 'Rebuild' your system, which quite frankly would not have fixed this issue because I still would have a case-sensitive drive.

Macbook Air 10.7.5, Mac OS X update combined can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirments for this update

If you are running 10.7.5, then that is the last version of Lion. To upgrade further requires meeting these requirements:

If it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
    First I'd do this...
Free up another 10 GB of Space, then...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update (Couldn't fix it)

    Hi there,
I also have been experiencing some problems after running Software Update (Security update + Java) a couple of days ago. Similarly to Jandaf (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9000023) I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. Based on the information provided in this forum I have tried some procedures which didn't solved my problem so far. Below I describe I have tried:
    1) I have booted using the installation DVD and run the disk utility. When performing the First Aid/Verify Disk I found some errors ('Invalid node structure'). But I couldn't fix the problem using disk repair (same problem 'Invalid node structure' 'Volume check failed'.
    2) I also tried to boot in single user mode (command + s) to run fsck -fy. It didn't work. I got the following message (last 4 lines):
    CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: -s
CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: booting in single user .. do not match
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCKeyboard" has no kernel dependency.
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCEventDriver" has no kernel dependency.
    3) When trying to boot in safe mode. I got a grey screen with the following message:
'You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button".
    4) I also tried to 'Archieve & Instal'. Again no success. After reading the DVD the action is terminated because some errors (does not specify).
    5) I also tried the 'German Medicine' (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8728797#8728797) (i.e. Connect the 'problematic MacBook' to my old G4 via firewire and reinstall the 2009-001 update). Again no success. The G4 cannot mount the MacBook hardrive.
I don't know what to do any more.
    A) Can I resuscitate my old system? If yes how?
    B) If not, can I at least save the data I have in my old HD?
    C) Is it possible to format and reinstall the OS or is this this computer doomed?
Apologies for writing so many questions but I'm really freaking out!
    Thank you.
    B.

    Hi BDAqua,

Due to my lack of knowledge I can't judge how bad this is. But I can tell you that every time I read the word bad in the log it scares the s*** out me.

  • Macbook wont start after software update

I ran the software update on my white macbook and now when the computer restarts it just spins. I have tried the hardware tests and it detects no problems. The computer will not restart it just spins and the fan goes for hours. Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I have been FIGHTING w/ the Apple Tech Support Group for almost a yr now on this issue. 10 of the 20 school MacBooks have died ( spinning gear for hrs ) when I did the update from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. I can't install the new iLife & iWork suites until we are at 10.4.10. I repaired permissions, ran Disk Warrior & Apple Disk Util from the CD before running the updates. I even tested the updates as the Admin & then as the Root user, still BIG TIME HOSE!!!!!!! I only have the standard Apple S/W & Microsoft Office 2004 on the books. The .10 update hoses the books, so I have quit running the update services on my G5 xServer, & the school is on HOLD. On the books that did hose I have had to re-install the OS & run my backups for the teachers. Apple says " we haven't heard any of these problems, so it must not be happening ". They are so very LAME........ we only spent $100,000 on Apple H/W & S/W & they won't support this issue. The school did get a new Intel Core2 Duo MacBook & I ran the update to go to 10.4.10 & it worked GREAT. This same update HOSED my personal MacBook Pro when updating from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. My MBP is a 1st gen Intel Core Duo CPU. Have you reported this prob to the Apple GURU's yet?¿?¿ Friday I just tested the 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 update on the 1st gen CPU book & it worked w/ no probs. My next test is to run the 10.4.9 to 10.4.11 & see if it works............. one can only HOPE!!!!!!!

  • I just ran a software update for Java and MacBook Pro SMC, now my Mini Display Port to HDMI TV is not working. The TV is flickering. The Mac Display is fine.

I was just watching / streaming TV off Safari on my actual TV.
I'm using a Mini-Display Port to HDMI cable for the connection to the external display.
Software update popped-up and said there was an update for Java and for SMC.
I ran the update and upon the computer restarting, my external display (my TV) is no longer working. It is now flickering.
It won't work in Mirroring or set up as an extended display.
I've reset SMC / PRAM / Safe Mode / Even restored from a Time Machine backup (From before the updates were done).
    What could it be?!

I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it.  Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there.  The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple.  They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one.  From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate.  And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one.  Try a new one.  Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port.

  • Hi i am trying to install windows to my macbook through boot camp and i get this message Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.!!!what can i do???please help me!

Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server. this is the message that i get a few days now that i am trying to install windows through boot camp to my macbook!does anybody knows what i can do????

You keep it on the usb stick for after you boot into Windows. From Windows you install the Windows Support software on the stick. Do you realize that you need to buy and install Windows? The Windows Support software you downloaded is only the Windows drivers for your hardware.
Read the Boot Camp installation instructions and help guides located here: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
