Macbook Sound to TV?

I'm using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter, then an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV's HDMI port. How can I get the sound to work though? I've tried everything...
I'm running Lion on my Pro if that matters...

Hi Alex,
It depends which MBP you have.
If you have an April 2010 or later:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241
Connect the adapter to the MBP and theHDMI cable from the adapter to the TV, then go to System Preferences > Sound> Output > select HDMI.
If it's an earlier one, you could use somthing like this:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/CBLMDPHDMID/
Or you could use a 3.5mm stereo mini plug to RCA adapter, then run RCA to proper ports on TV or sound system. You could also use a 3.5mm mini Toslink/optical if your TV or sound system will accept that.

  • My macbook sound is not working. No idea what happened!

It was working a while ago when I left home. I packed it in the case and put it in my backpack and walked to the library. I just took it out after sitting down and it doesn't work.
    I'm horrible with technology!
The sound bar isn't on mute, and everything's okay in the settings.

    Hey tilliesss,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues related to Sound on your MacBook. The following resource may provide a solution:

  • Macbook sound issue after standby

    Hello,
    Bit random issue here..
This is not consistence but it is totally random. Randomly when i open the macbook lid when it comes out off standby by i hear a weird "ripping" sound issue i think its coming from left hand speaker or side. Im assuming its the speaker.
Its hard to explain its starts with a weird fuzzyness and then it turns into a rip type sound and stops.
It last about 2 seconds and is random and only happens after putting up lid.
    Is this normal? any ideas?
    thanks

Upgrade kernel to 3.1.5 still not fix the sound issue
    On 12/14, I upgraded    imagemagick, pcre, texinfo, virtualbox-modules, wxgtk with `pacman -Syu`,
after reboot, the sound comes back, everything works fine just like before
But on 12/16, I lost the sound again, only found these line in kernel.org
    Dec 16 09:28:29 localhost kernel: [75508.452468] ice1724: Too long irq loop, status = 0xff
    Dec 16 09:28:29 localhost kernel: [75508.452468] ice1724: Disabling MPU_TX
no matter how I tried to reproduce the upgrade on 12/14, still unable to fix the
issue, and those warning didn't show up again, I also boot into live USB to check
if this is hardware problem, but sound works normal in live USB
    it's so weird...

  • Macbook Sounded Muted on 30  Machines

I work at a  high school where we use active directory and macbooks with 10.6.8. A few days ago about 30+ machines sound stoped working. We have tried SMC rest, PRAM rest, restarting, uninstalling applications, drivers, sound preferences files. Something is blocking the sound we use Casper invetory systems for managment with our own custom images for the computers. Never have had this problem before and one day their sound all works by then the next day it doesn't. What could be doing this? I have tried all of the steps listed in the support forms here.

    Peter Payne wrote:
feel free to comment with your own experiences.
Ok. But, what have you solved?
First off, the 'huge problems' that you mention pertain to the Apple mini-DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter. There's nothing 'bizarre' about that adapter - it allows you to connect a display requiring a dual-link DVI (i.e. up to 2560x1600) to your MBP. Those issues were not really that common (judging frequency of problems by reading these forums is like judging human health by visiting an Emergency Room - you'd think most of the population was sick or injured). If you went by forum problem reports, you'd never buy any product.
More importantly, the _cable you linked above is an entirely different product_, a mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. It has nothing to do with DVI (note that Apple doesn't even make a mini-Dp to DP cable). If your display has a DisplayPort input (as the Dell 30" does) then it's fine. If your display has only DVI input (such as the Apple 30" Cinema Display), the cable you link is useless.
But, although I find it utterly unsurprising that a mini-DP to DP cable will allow one to connect a mini-DP port on a computer to a DP port on a display, good to know that in that instance, the dirt cheap cable from Monoprice does the job.

  • MacBook Sound Issues

I use my Macbook as a part of a sound system and after I hook my Macbook in using the headphone jack it won't let me use the internal speakers after I unhook it.
I went into my sound settings, and my only output option is digital out. Help seems to give me the impression that I should have an option to use the internal speakers.
    Any ideas?

    Hello,
This is usually due to improperly disconnected headphones or a bent pin. Many people in the forum have had this problem.
To confirm that you are having the same problem, look into the headphone jack. Do you see a red light? If so, your problem is the same as everybody else's.
Repeatedly plug and unplug your headphones several times, and see if the problem fixes itself. If not, very gently poke the headphone jack with something small like a matchstick and wiggle it around. Be very careful so that you don't break anything. This can loosen whatever is stuck in there and restore functionality.
If none of those work, you need to take it into Apple service. It's not a software issue.

  • Macbook sound to airport express

    Hi,
I have a airport extreme/airport express network setup here where I can listen to itunes through my home stereo. Works great- works so well I want to be able to listen to non itunes sound through the stereo (streaming media, DVD's, etc.)
Is this possible? If it is where do I change the sound output to the Airport express for the whole Macbook?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Hello AKCub. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Perform a "hard" reset of the AirPort Express Base Station (AX)
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
To set up AirTunes on the AX, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
    Music tab
o Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    o iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    o iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • MacBook sound problem

    Hi
I bought a 13" MacBook in August. When I open Logic and set all the sound preferences to my Saffire for Input/Output, I still hear sound coming out on the MacBook's speakers. I tried Record and Reaper and no sound comes out for them. Any suggestions ?

Hummmm, actually all my settings, be they in the System Preferences or otherwise, are set to the Saffire and I do need the hear only from the Focusrite, otherwise I get feedback when I play guitar. Just like a microphone would.
What I meant with Record and Reaper is that no sound comes out from the MacBook, but sound DOES come out from the Focusrite, which I want.

  • MacBook sound not working.

Hi, for Christmas I was given a new MacBook Air, and the sound was working fine, I would litsen to music both with headphones and with the built in speakers, but now neither one works. Please help!

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Noise when recording - Macbook - sound card problem?

Hi, I'm recording with Garageband on my Macbook, and everything sounds fine through the monitors, but once I start recording, it picks up this cyclical, scattered hiss (very hard to describe, kind of like a hiss rolling it's R's). It's not any of my plugged-in equipment, because it records this noise even when it is recording "nothing", with no mics or anything plugged in. It's very apparent on quiet tracks, not so much on busier compositions, but it makes doing any real instrument recording untenable. Is this a fault in the sound card? Is the program recording a vibration from the processor? The hard drive? I am flummoxed. Would a USB or Firewire audio device suffer from the same issue? Help!

I used to have this problem too. Try this: Just record like 10 seconds of seomthing, anything... even silence, with the macbook plugged to it's power source(ac-adapter) then do the same thing... but unplug it from its power source so that is is running solely on battery power. My prediction is that you will hear a significant difference. Turns out, the buzz of the computer charging, while very very very very slight, will be picked up. (if you dont notice this diference, then I am full of crap and cant help you)
So here's what you do: Get an interface that plugs into usb or firwire. I use the iMic. Very simple and works great.

  • MacBook Sound Card

    Hello, everybody.
I have a black MacBook, 2.4 GHz, and I ran a PA through it once while trying to mix audio and it blew out the sound card and the speakers. I would like to be able to use the headphone jack again, but it doesn't work; I was wondering how I could fix this problem, preferably by purchasing a new sound card and replacing it myself if this is possible.
Thank you very much for your time.
    Colton

    Kappy,
In that case, I'm not sure whether it's the motherboard's chip or the speakers. How can I tell if it's just the speakers that blew out? Reason I ask is because I can't put headphones through my computer anymore; the sound just doesn't work, and I don't know much about computer hardware but I'm assuming this is an internal problem with the computer, as opposed to the speakers. However, the speakers play but they've been clearly ruined, with the sound being very quiet and distorted at best, and occasionally the speakers will make weird popping noises for no reason. Thank you for your reply, Kappy, and I look forward to hearing back from you.

  • MacBook sound adjustment not permitted

My MacBook won't permit any sound adjustments.
when I use the sound keys, I get a not permitted sign under the icon for sound.
It is a circle with a line thruogh it.
I also have a red light coming out of the headphone jack.
I have tried a blast of keyboard cleaner into the headphone port.
    Help! Thanx.

    This is chris76gc.
    Thank you Dave Stowe.
It took a couple of tries and different headphones, but it worked.
I'm in Philly, Lake Dallas sounds nice this time of year.
    Thanks again, Chris.

  • Macbook sound gone, replaced by hiss and whine

So, the sound has gone on my Macbook, now all I get is a weird electrical hiss.
I think I may have smelled an electrical burning when it went, but I couldn't be sure of that.
All I know now, is that instead of sound, all I get with sound set to the speakers is a hiss and a high pitched whine (which seems to come from the left side of the screen hinge), and nothing from the headphone socket. (Although weirdly, the hiss and whine still eminate from the Macbook even with the headphones plugged in)
No red light from the headphone socket, PRAM reset done, unplugged from power, restarted several times, several different sources tried, all to no avail.
So, does that mean the logic board needs replacing?
I sooooo hope not! It's my girlfriends that I'm borrowing as mine is having hard drive issues! Not having much Mac luck at the moment!

I bought a new "made out of a single block of aluminum" MacBook on Oct. 20, and I am having a similar issue. The headphone output (with any headphones, I have tried it with several) has a noticeable and annoying low-level hiss whenever the sound is on. The volume level doesn't matter--the hiss is the same no matter what.
I went to the Apple Store and was hoping that this was an issue with just my computer, but every single other Aluminum MacBook in the store also had a noticeable hiss. Some were more pronounced than mine.
I should mention that it wasn't possible to hear the hiss at the store without using bud earphones and also putting my hands over my ears, so in a somewhat noisy environment, the hiss is hard to detect. But at home or at work, it is quite noticeable and makes having headphones in extremely annoying.
I am hoping this issue will be diagnosed and fixed in the future, although I suspect it is a hardware issue that cannot be addressed easily.

  • Macbook sound stutters then restart screen comes up

The sound on my computer has been stuttering for some time now....first it was just Netflix, now it happens in VLC player and other web players. The sound will stutter for a while, then eventually give out altogether. Or the grey "You need to restart your computer" screen will come up. This problem has persisted through a motherboard replacement, harddrive replacement, operating system reinstallation and increased memory. Please help! It is very frustrating to have invested in repairing a computer that still does not work correctly. I'm including the crash report info below:

  • MacBook Sound Card - Mono or Stereo?

Is the sound card (specifically, the external mic jack) of the MacBook mono or stereo? Thanks.

Thanks! I can't figure out, then, why my portable guitar amplifier (Rockman) will not play through my MacBook. It should be a simple thing. You connect a mini-jack stereo cable from the line out of the amp into the external mic jack of the computer. It works perfectly on my PC. But on the MacBook, there is no audio output whatsoever. GarageBand does pick up a signal that you can hear when playing back a recording, but it's a neutered signal and nothing like what you hear through headphones from the amp. I was told that it might be because the sound card of the MacBook is mono, and the Rockman requires stereo. But I guess that's not the case. Very frustrating! I'd like to record with my MacBook. Do you think this issue is worth a trip to a Genius Bar?

  • MacBook sound cuts out.

    Hi all
I seem to be rather unlucky with audio problems and new MacBooks, back in March I returned my Black MacBook for making odd noises when you increased the volume (since I've read the static pop noise is probably the sound card waking from sleep).
My MacBook Alu Unibody 13" Backlight, and a new problem:
    I was playing a game, the FlatOut 2 Demo - http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=20153
All a sudden the audio cuts out, I quit and check the volume up and down and all you get is an annoying popping static noise, checking the alert sounds it does the same. The only way to get rid of it was to restart.
I had previously played the game the day before with no problem, the only difference is between then and now I've transfered my data onto the machine from an iMac G5. Coincidence? However; I tested it in a new user I created, same thing happens. I've tried a few other games but haven't had the same problem.
My next step will be to wipe it, fresh OS X install and test it again (I'm hesitant due to the hours it took to get my data on it the first time, I don't relish doing it twice).
As I've only had the machine since Friday, I just want to find out if it's the machine, the game, or something I've installed. Can anyone else test this on theirs? (I know after reading this you'll be hesitant).
I've made a video which demonstrates the problem:

    Thank you

    I have the answer:
I opened a ticket at http://www.vpltd.com/supportdesk/ the makers of the game:
Their response (which I'm sure they won't mind me posting):
    "Hi,
It is game issue and it happens on some Mac models. I am currently working on a fix and hopefully a patch will be released shortly. Fortunately, as you already figured out, it only happens when you have Hardware 3D audio enabled, so until a patch is released, you can play with audio working just fine as long as you disable Hardware 3D.
Sorry for inconvenience. I hope you enjoy our game anyway
    Best regards,
    Michael Trepka"
So I was on the right track with the Hardware 3D - I can relax now and now be paranoid the Mac is screwed.
Hope this helps anyone who has this problem.
