Macbook speakers

My internal speakers on my MacBook have decided they don't want to work. I've checked all settings and that's all fine, and I can't see a problem with the soundcard as I can listen to sound perfectly fine with external speakers/headphones.
When I try to adjust the volume with no headphones/external speakers plugged in I get a little symbol saying I can't, (circle with a line through it, sort of like-> (/) ) However it says that the volume is at it's highest - yet there is no sound at all.
Another odd point to note is that there is a red light being emited from the headphne jack.
Any ideas at all? It's driving me insane.

It seem to occur after someone has used headphones. To answer your question yes the MacBook has digital audio in and out beside the analog inputs.
This is from the spec sheet.
+Built-in stereo speakers, built-in omnidirectional microphone, combined optical digital audio input/audio line in, combined optical digital audio output/headphone out+
Thanks for the .

  • Playing my song as MP3 on MacBook speakers

I know the MacBook speakers are notoriously bad for listening to, well, anything, but most MP3s (from a band like U2, for example) sound OK. You can at least hear everything in the mix even though it sounds tinny.
Well, I'm listening to some of the songs I recorded in GB and exported as MP3s into iTunes and you can barely hear the bass in them. They sound fine with headphones/car speakers, but hollow playing on my MacBook. I'm not sure how much I should turn up/double the bass tracks because then it'd be too loud on headphones/car speakers. What should I do? Thanks.

    Bump (sorry)
Basically I just need to know how I should mix the bass (dB levels, etc.)/double tracking so that I can hear it on a common device like my MacBook speakers.

I have a macbook pro 15 retina - when ever I connect to bluetooth speaker, I get this loud noise coming from the speaker - if I turn bluetooth off, the noise is now coming from the macbook speakers & stays until i restart.

Hi John. Thanks for that input. At Step 6, after clicking "Next" I get a window telling me my OS version is unsupported and the installation may not complete. I am prompted to go to Canon's web site to "Check Latest Info".
I've had this window on previous attempts and from Canon's web site I downloaded two drivers as follows
    - ICA Driver V4.0.0
    - Canon IJ Network Tool V4.5.0
I'm not sure if these are the correct / complete drivers I need for this install or not.
I continue to follow all the steps. At step 9 I click "Wireless Set Up using USB" amd get a License Agreement (a little different than instructions)
I click "Agree" and it goes to a Setup window with two progress bars showing the installation. I've not been prompted to connect the USB?
After the Setup window is done, I am then prompted to connect the printer via USB. I connect the printer and click on "Redetect". It is not detected.
I then try following the Canon on screen instructions for connecting to the wireless LAN amd enter the password. It searches and indicates "Connecting" on the window, but it never connects and the blue light just blinks
So, at this point I am stuck??
    Thanks
    Stephen

  • Im connectioning my macbook to my hdmi port in tv.  I am getting no sound through the tv only the macbook speakers.  anyone know how to get my tv to read sound?

Im connectioning my macbook to my hdmi port in tv.  I am getting no sound through the tv only the macbook speakers.  anyone know how to get my tv to read sound?

The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. But check your TV manual to see if it has audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports.
If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody or Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that uses the Mini DisplayPort and a USB port to combine video and audio to HDMI. It's only 2 channel stereo not 5.1 Dolby Surround.

The Mini-DVI port doen't carry audio at all. The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports.
To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

  • Mixing bass loud enough to be heard through MacBook speakers

I can never seem to get my bass tracks loud enough (within the context of my all my mixing) to be heard through my MacBook speakers. The bass (recorded with a jazz bass) sounds fine w/ headphones, in the car as well as through studio monitors. I know MacBook -- and laptop speakers in general -- are considered terrible for music listening, but let's be honest: it's the most common method.
I listen to other recordings by other bands and you can hear their bass OK this way. Why not w/ my recordings?

I know this thread is a little old, but I've had the same problems in the past and have found a plugin for mixing that at least partially solves this exact problem. It's called Waves RBass and you can find it at http://www.waves.com/Content.aspx?id=194. What this does is basically crank up the harmonics, instead of the fundamental tone. You can read more about it in the manual at http://www.waves.com/manuals/plugins/RBass.pdf (Chapter 1, under "What is the secret?"). Just thought I'd share it, in case someone else has the same issues.

  • MacBook speakers and headphones are not working! Please help.

    MacBook OS X 10.6.8
    2009 model
I was watching a movie and my MacBook randomly shutdown by itself. I turned it back on and had no more problems, so I restarted the movie. The audio was not working in my headphones. So I tried the internal speakers and there was still no sound. I did a quick google search which led me to trying various options and finally called Apple Support on the phone.
I've tried resetting my PRAM but it only showed an alternating screen between grey and black. Nothing happened. I also reset SMC but that didn't work either. I have checked everything in system preferences, Audio MIDI, etc. and it all appears to be correct.
While on the phone we found that when I plug headphones or an external speaker in, it does not show up on the "output" menu under System Preferences > Sound.
I do NOT have the money to go to a computer store and the nearest Apple Store is 2 hours away. I desperately need help because most of the work I do involves having to be able to listen to sound. Please help if you can. I'm not ignorant when it comes to computers but I'm no genius. If you have any ideas, please be specific. Your help is very appreciated.
PS. When a speaker is plugged in at first, I hear a little crackling from it. The same happens to what sounds like internal speakers if I start a video.

    Hi,
Please use the following instructions to check and fix:

  • Apple 23" Cinema display and internal macbook speakers

With a 23" cinema display hooked up to my macbook and the macbook's lid closed can i use the internal speakers?
ps. i have a mighty mouse and wireless keyboard so i can close the lid.

Welcome to Apple Discussions, iLove 
Yes, the internal speakers will work with the lid down. They won't sound very good.
Once the external screen is active as the sole screen, you can raise the lid on the MacBook and the internal screen will stay off.

  • Built in MacBook speakers do not work

My digital out only lists microphone out.  My headphones are not plugged in during this screenshot below.  When my headphones are plugged in they work and I have volume control.  When I unplug them, the volume stuff has the "no sign" so my laptop speakers are not able to produce audio. Anybody that has a fix for it I would appreciate.
    Thanks,
    Adam

I was just about to ask if you can see a red glow in the audio out port. Most people can correct this by inserting a headphone plug into the port and GENTLY wiggling it in the horizontal plane:
Background, or "why this happens": the audio-out port on a modern Mac is digital and is held to high dimensional standards. Most headphones have an analog plug not made to such standards. The specific issue is the the "tip-to-stop shoulder" distance on many analog plugs is just a bit longer than on a digital one and jams the "mute" contact inside the port in the muted position, triggering the red light
The best action is prevention. When connecting headphones (or external speakers), put on the headphones and have an audio track running BEFORE you insert the plug. Insert the plug slowly, listening for sound on both channels and, when you hear it, STOP INSERTING.
Bottom line is you do NOT want to insert any random plug "to the hilt" until you know it is dimensioned to fit a digital port.
My MacBook Pro has the same jack. I have a pair of decent-quality, name-brand headphones and their plug is not to spec. This picture shows their plug in the port at a position that delivers proper sound and does not let the plug fall out:
Note that the shoulder is about 1/16-inch from contacting the computer case. It is secure in this position.
Every plug is different. I have a pair of El Cheapo external speakers I picked up for US$2 at a yard sale and their plug fits perfectly on my Macs with a digital audio port. Go figure!

  • Aluminum MacBook Speakers Pop in Bootcamp w. Vista Ultimate

I have a new aluminum macbook that has an issue of the speakers popping whenever I use the windows vista bootcamp partition. I have the realtek mac os drivers from the cd installed, and I cannot find out how to stop the noise. The speakers will pop while playing any sound, and then they go out for a while. This only happens in windows on bootcamp/

Mine does the same thing. Playing a song in iTunes is next to impossible; the audio driver can't keep up! And when using Skype, the microphone just stops working after a while.
Apple has done an unforgivably bad job on Windows drivers... witness the trackpad/blue screen issue that has persisted since the December update.
Anyone thinking of getting a MacBook with the intention of running Vista, even only occasionally, think again. Absent an external mouse, it's worthless (the blue screens WILL occur), and with one, it's inferior to every PC I've ever used.

  • Why are my Macbook speakers clipping out?

I have an older MacBook, from back before the aluminum model.  I was rockin out some Alice in Chains the other day and I thought I blew my speakers, but upon inspection I found that anything I plug into the headphone jack on my Macbook (even headphones) sounds like it's clipping out, no matter the volume. It's ALSO doing it when I play directly through the onboard speakers. Certain tracks/videos do NOT sound that way, only full range tracks with lots of low-end frequencies.
Obviously, this isn't a problem with the headphone jack or the speakers... is this a motherboard about to explode? Some sort of sound card type part I can swap out? Any suggestions?

    Easy Workaround: Airplay.
I still dont know what exactly is causing the clipping, but I got an old Airport Express and put it on my stereo, so now it streams instrad of going through the headphone jack. Sounds great AND its wireless!

  • My Macbook speakers cut off when playing music/videos

Hey, I'm new to the boards but have last generations macbook (all black).
All my system and software updates are up to date.
When I play music in itunes the song continues to play but the music cuts out. I thought it was just itunes but when I tried playing a video in imovie, the same thing happened.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm experiencing the same problem. My speakers pop lightly - kind of static-like - and when I play music in iTunes or a video, on YouTube for example, the sound cuts in and out. This JUST started happening about 3 days ago. Frustrating.

  • Macbook speakers not working

    Hi,
I just got an old used macbook from my office. I am working on it now. Though it is old, I love working in it.
One day, I inserted my iPod's headphone into the headphone jack of macbook. After listening to some tracks for some time, I removed it from macbook.
Now I dont get any sound from the macbook built-in speakers. The volume control on the top panel is disabled (I mean its in gray color, i cannot do anything with it).
When I press F5 or F4 (Volume Up and Volume down), there is symbol (kinda crossed circle symbol) is coming. Also, some red light is glowing in the macbook headphone jack. I am not able to listen any track from built in speakers.
I am now able to listen to sound only using a headphone. Sound with headphone all the time is paining. Please help. I am new to macworld and my employer just gave me a beautiful mac and I want its built-in sound speakers back.
    Thanks

  • How can I listen to music from iTunes on ATV using my macbook speakers?

I am using iTunes to play music via Airplay on ATV, my TV as a 2nd monitor from where I'm using iTunes. I'd like to hear audio in speakers connected to my macbook instead of the TV. Could I do that? Please help me txs!!

    Not possible.
If the intent is to get sound from the speakers on the computer, play the content on the computer and leave the ATV and TV out of the equation.

  • How to play music through headphones Macbook speakers AT SAME TIME

I have a macbook using OS 10.4 and I have been listening to music. I want to hear my music through the internal speakers and through headphones at the same time.
The reason is... I like to sing to my music. But it sounds odd for others around if they can't hear. So I need to play it out loud. However, there are certain times (like right now) when there is too much background noise for me to hear my music well and I'd like to be able to drown it out. So I want to hear the music through my headphones. While still having it come out the speakers.. so those round hear it too.
There really should be a way to do this, and I don't see why there wouldn't be. If there is a logical reason why one can't do this, then please inform me. If you know fo a way to accomplish it, then tell me please!

I'm looking for a similar capability except by using software only.
I want to be able to get sound from a single application out to two
    or more audio-output devices.
Is there any third-party software available to do this?
As an aside, MacOS almost lets one do this now with the existing
audio plumbing capability, but it comes up just short of being
    able to do it.
Thanks for any third-party software pointers or suggestions.
    Dave

  • Audio will not work through Macbook Speakers.

Hello I just bought a black macbook and it had the infamous audio problem w/the red light coming out the audio jack. It worked fine with headphones or speakers but once I unplugged them, then a red light would shine through the jack and then no sound output through the Macbook's speakers.
Initially I fixed the problem, but every time I plugged in my external speakers, and then unplugged them the red light would reappear.
Now I have no red light in the headphone jack and there is still no sound...my Macbook can still output sound through headphones or external speakers but it wont work through the built-in speakers and now there is NO red light shining through the headphone jack...any ideas?
    Thanks!
