Macbook starts up with quicktime running...won't close.

My macbook is booting up with quicktime and safari running and won't allow me to open any applications or allow me to shut down. I have to re-boot several times before it finally cooperates. It goes into this mode whenever I try to open a video file on youtube or facebook. Any suggestions out there?
OS X 10.6.8
Thanks,

Hi ccronic4,
If you are able to boot your MacBook Pro using a safe boot - that is holding down the shift key during startup - successfully, that indicates that the hardware is functioning normally, and therefore that the issue is because of software. The good news is that a hardware repair will not be necessary.
See this article for information about what to troubleshoot further -

Never use those things. The only thing you will accomplish by forcing the exhaust fan to operate at a higher speed than required will be to draw in more environmental contaminants than it would otherwise. Interfering with the Mac's cooling system could conceivably invalidate its warranty.
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Macbook starts up with chime  then white screen with grey apple logo and spinning gear appears and continues to spin

Help,  Turned on MacBook Pro this morning and just get a white screen with grey apple logo and spinning gear.  Cannot access desktop.

Computer starts up in Safe boot by holding down the shift button.   But when I go to restart the same thing happens.  What should I do?

  • Why does my MacBook start up with the OS X utilities screen?

When I turn on my MacBook I get a screen that says OS X Utilities. It has 4 options, restore from time machine back up, reinstall OS X, get help online, and disk utility. I have played with the options but I'm scared I'm going to erase all of my files.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

For some reason it is starting directly into the Recovery HD - normally this has to be done deliberately by holding the key combination of Command + r
Firstly, try restarting holding down the Alt (option) key and it will hopefully take you to the Start-up Manager. Select Macintosh HD (you may need to use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select it) and press enter. Let it boot, hopefully into 'normal' mode. Now restart again from the Apple menu - does it boot correctly now?
If that didn't help, try a PRAM reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • When shutting down from Start button with Firefox running, screen freezes, will not complete shutdown and I must manually shut down. How to fix?

    win 7; 32 bit OS
    Firefox 23.0

Thanks for posting back. Glad Firefox continues to work.
Most programs try to do a bit of a cleanup routine as they closedown so it is usually best to close them down properly.
You will presumably have options to make the computer sleep, that needs power; or hibernate, that needs no power but may need spare RAM memory.

  • Quicktime files won't close

there are 10 files that everytime I open quicktime they are "open". the same with preview, any time i click on the red x, it looks like it closes but it's still open
    I'm running QT v10.1, preview 5.5.1, Lion 10.7.2

This is very poor and very microsoft... I'm so disappointed in Apple, the support people want me to pay to get a solution to this.. I've got my amazing iMac on my desktop and my video's won't play properly in the standard player. Absolute rubbish. It's all going down hill for Apple... they've taken away frontrow as well!! Stupid decision! pointless having a remote now.
I can't believe so many people are experiencing this and Apple haven't come up with a solution yet. When I find out how top delete Quicktime without affecting itunes I will.
    But here's the best solution so far;
    1. Right click on any AVI file
    2. Select get info
    3. Select open with and choose VLC
    4. Click on the change All button below
    5. Happy viewing
I've convinced at least 10 people to switch to mac's umpteen people I work with have purchased iphones because of me and how I've promoted the quality of Apple over their rivals..no more.

  • QuickTime player won't close and won't allow me to shutdown

    I Have a MacBook Pro 11,1 - 2.6 GHz i5...IOS 10.9.5...8 GB memory...1600 MHz DDR3.  My QuickTime v.10.3 won't shutdown and won't  allow me to shutdown my MacBook pro.

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, select the QuickTime Player, and press the Force Quit button. If that doesn't work, save and close everything you can and use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to force quit the loginwindow process.

  • When my MacBook is put to sleep with Safari running, I get an error

When I put my MacBook to sleep with Safari running, when I wake it up it has an error telling me to restart my computer. I have only had this two weeks and have only installed Flash and iWork. Any tips?

If your Mac is still that new, then you have phone support and Genius Bar support for free. Contact Apple.

  • Cant start iTunes nor Quicktime

When i start iTunes or Quicktime, they won't open, i'm getting an error.
All worked fine, when i had my previous system on my last hard disk. I decided to buy a new WD 1TB harddisk. I did format and installed windows, but when trying to open the iTunes now (to sync music with my iphone) i'm getting an error, the same happens when trying to open quicktime player. Haven't got them working since I got the new WD HDD. Really need help with this!
I have windows XP service pack 3 installed, if it's necessary to point out. iTunes is ver 8.1.1.10 and Quicktime ver 7.60.92.0. If more information is needed to make it easier to solve the problem, then just ask.
I would be very grateful, if this problem get's a solution.
My english grammar might not be good for i am estonian.
    iTunes error:

    Quicktime error:
    http://www.writech.pri.ee/quicktimeerror1.bmp
    http://www.writech.pri.ee/quicktimeerror2.bmp

In addition to Pamela Gadsden's advice, BEX errors in quicktime can be due to the installation of incompatible codecs.
iTunes can not work if Quicktime does not.
Have you installed any of the following:
ACE & K-Lite mega codecs package, QT alternative, Storm codec, WinAVI video converter, Mpcstar, (possibly starcodec pack, 3ivx)
If so uninstall them, they are know to cause problems with Quickitme.
The list of problem codecs may not be complete, suspect any recently installed codec or converter software.
Then download the version of Quickime without iTunes:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Now Remove Quicktime using the method for Quicktime in this article (just Quicktime):
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
When you come to your C:\Windows\system32\ folder you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
    Restart you computer
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check if it starts.
If it does you are in a position to find out if iTunes is OK.

  • HT3964 I have a Macbook 2.1, running 10.5 8. with a new battery. It won't start with the battery, but after you start it with the charger, disconnect the charger,it will run for over an hour on the battery, all the while it shows 0% charge! tried reset, no

I have a Macbook 2.1 that runs 10.5.8.   I cannot get it to start on battery power. It will run for over an hour on the battery, if you start it with the charger, but even then it shows a 0% charge! I've tried pulling the battery out while it's booted, pulling battery out and discharging the system by holding the power switch, nothing seems to make it work. any ideas? It has all the updates Apple offers, too.

    Try resetting the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Will not show up in safe mode, will not show when started from Windows 7 DVD.

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!
