Macbook startup freeze - missing mdnsresponder loop

Hello
I got a confused call from a friend now in India to do an important business presentation. He is stuck with a MacBook that freeses on boot-up.
It was not easy to find out what the symptom was in detail over the phone, but I had him start up in single user mode, and he got a loop which included the following error (not 100% that all of this is correct):
missing com.apple.launch[1] mdnsresponder (com.apple.mdnsresponder [1491] posix-spanwnp (/usr/sbin)
At some point the loop stopped, and we were able to do an fsck. He got volum ok after a couple of tries, but the start-up problem is still there.
He has no back-up system drive or system discs with him. Is there anything he can do except from giving up and bring the machine to an Apple Store when he gets home? Is this likely to be a hardware problem, or related to a corrupt system file or the like?

Hi Harriet, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It'll boot up fine in safe mode.
It could mean that you have some Hardware failure, or it might be 3rd party things, or just corruption.
In Safe Mode try making a new Admin Account & log into that one for a test.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check System Preferences, the Other row for possibilities.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Macbook pro freezes and sound loops

    Hello everyone,
My mbp, which I bought last summer, has been having freezing issues in Windows. These freezes seem to happen at random, but predominantly when I am playing games. The screen would stop where it froze (everything would be still), and the sound would continuously loop. The only way out of this problem is to hold down the power button to force the mbp to turn off. When I turn the computer back on, the mbp will freeze in the windows loading screen (when the thing is moving back and forth inside the bar). It usually takes a couple tries to get my computer to start back up again without freezing in the process. However, it is not only while playing games that I encounter this freezing problem, sometimes, the computer freezes while I am playing music or even while browsing the internet.
Any help would be very much appreciated,
    Aaron

Do the freezes occur when running under OSX, Aaron, or just under Windows?
How are you running Windows? with Bootcamp? Parallels? Something else?
Which version of Windows are you using? What version of OSX is installed?
have you installed any third party RAM? if so, what brand?
Do you have plenty of space on the drive?
Does the problem occur under both battery and power adaptor?
Have you checked the integrity of the directories using an appropriate utility?
It is near impossible to even begin to suggest possibilities unless you provide some more information.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • MacBook Pro 17" with Intel Core 2 Duo startup freeze with 10.6.8?

With my MacBook Pro 17" with Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.33 GHz startup freeze with 10.6.8 - I had problems after several SW upgrades. Startup ends every time in a freeze or a crash, nothing is running, i am not able to type in the password. it starts in beginning with thin colored disrupting lines on the display and this get more and more and than freeze the system.
"Save Boot", startup with shift shows no problems, display is ok, no freeze. So something must new in the video-driver. Is there any driver what I can delete or any new software to help in this issue?

try to boot off the cd installazzione, when the screen appears to follow thePACKING screen viewing. If you've already looked in the manual are your problem?

  • My 13" MacBook Pro freezes at startup

While using Firefox, my Macbook pro frooze about 2 days ago. The screen was only showing the multi-colour spinning circle.
Pressed [Command + Option + Esc] to force quit. No response
Pressed Power Button for 10 sec.Power OFF
Again Pressed Power Button, the MacBook Pro freezes at startup, the MAC makes the startup music, enters a white Screen and is stuck there. There is a light clicking noise continously heard.
    Followed instructions to RESET SMC.
    1. Power OFF.
    2. Press [Shift + CNT + OPT + Power Key] and release at same time.
    3. Power ON.
    There was no response.
Attempted multiple times to switch-ON and OFF MAC-Book. No response
Attempted RESET SMC multiple times. No response.
Then suddenly when I gave up, it unfreeze after 15 minutes and enters the login screen.
Did a normal shut-down and power up. It was OK.
Then, ran the Firefox in debug mode and disabled the plug-ins.
It was stable for a 2 hours.
Then again, got the spinning colour circle.
So, took it to the service center last afternoon here at North Point, Hong Kong. The engineer there instructed me to backup the hard-disk and recover the CD.
Brough the machine back to my home.
Since the spinning colour circle would not stop, powered OFF the device.
On POWER ON, the screen freeze. Just like the first time.
Tried RESET SMC, Nor esult. Left the device power-on for an hour. No result.
Then, inserted the recovery CD. Powered OFF the Macbook Pro. Powered ON  and pressed "C" immediately. No response. The CD is now stuck inside the MACBook Pro.
Still have the white Screen at Power-On.

  • My MacBook pro freezes during start up after 30 secs. Any ideas?

My MacBook pro freezes during startup while the logo is still showing and the moving circle stops after about 30 seconds. Any ideas please?

On my Mac that DSMOS message appears about 20 seconds into the boot process.  Booting finishes about 30 seconds after that.
Do those letters "v" really appear on the screen?
Unfortunately, if those are the last messages on the screen, I see nothing there that explains the hang.  The next message I see after the DSMOS message is one about an AirPort daemon, although I'm not sure I understand any connection there might be between that and your hang.
Since you don't have a system restore disc you won't be able to do the next thing I was going to suggest, which is to run the diagnostics that came with that Mac.  If you have an OS X 10.6 installation disc, you could try reinstalling OS X over the top of what's on it now.  Right after that finishes use Software Update to apply any missing OS X updates, or download and install the "combo" updater for the version of OS X 10.6 that you want.  If that Mac has a software problem doing that might help.

  • My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse.  I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze.  When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally.  Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine.  But there are blue stripes on my screen.  The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes.  I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer.  If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed.  I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this?  Is it the firmware or what?  I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them  the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

  • 17 Macbook Pro, freezing while rendering video in FCP

Hi I have a late 2008 Model MacBook Pro 17.  My Macbook keeps freezing during rendering in Final Cut Pro 7.  Its been doing this for 3 weeks or so.  I originally thought a SSD was the way to go, but I think I may really need a new processor.  Im a little confused on what I should buy and what fits my MacBook Pro. What I want is to fix the rendering freezing and shorten the rendering time.  I'd appreciate any advice or ideas.  Is my Macbook compatible to a Intel i7 or i5?  Buying a new Macbook Pro is not an option at this point.  Thank you in advance.
Here are the specs on my laptop:
    MacBookPro4,1
2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB RAM
    500gb HDD Momentus 7200 SATA 3Gb/s
    GeForce 8600M GT

    Hi instantclassic99,
I do have this article of key combinations on startup:
Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1533
I would try this with a wired Apple keyboard if possible.  Specifically, I'd try:
    Press Option during startup
Start up in Startup Manager, where you can select an OS X volume or network volume to start from.
    Cheers!

Hello there! Ever since installing Mavericks, my MacBook Air freezes nearly every time I wake it from sleep. Whever I open the lid, it allows me to enter my password, and then it freezes. Other times, it will let me log in, and then whenever I try to use Safari or another application it freezes. It doesn't completely freeze, I get the beachball and everything. What is going on?

    Hello there AustinJGibson,
It sounds like you are having performance issues with Mavericks.
It sounds like you are seeing some performance issues after having installed Mac OS X 10.9.
I want to recommend the troubleshooting information from this article named:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.
An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the app to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.Find the manual for your Mac
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
Next I would perform a Safe Boot:

  • MacBook pro freezes at start up

My MacBook pro freezes at start up at the gray screen w/ spinning gear.
I did a firmware update yesterday and this happened upon restart.
MacBook pro purchased new early 2011 lion

You need to back up your data before you do anything else, if it's still possible.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from your recovery partition (10.7 or later), a local Time Machine backup volume (10.7.2 or later), or your installation disc (10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • MacBook Pro freezes or shut down automatically in sleep mode

    Hi there,
since awhile I'm troubled with a strange problem: Every now and then my MacBook Pro freezes randomly.
The only way to recover is to use the power button. There is no causality with programs I used or with
external devices. I don't use SOPHOS by the way.
The second strange thing is that my MacBookPro also automatically shuts down (after a while) when I use the screensaver
or the sleep mode. Any Idea?
    Kind Regards,

Try a Safe Mode boot ...
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
A Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches that may help.
