Macbook stopped work with external monitor

Hello!!!
I need a help!
I always used my MacBook 13" with a Samsung 932BW as external monitor.
Yesterday morning, I had to change this monitor to another one. After that, my 932BW doesn't work any more with my Mac, that just blink when I plug in the DVI or VGA cabe (I've both mini-Dvi adapters).
So, any help to me????
Thanks

In particular, you may have to trash the preferences file for displays, which is a file(s) that has "windowserver" in its name. Instructions for how to do that can be found through the above link.

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.

  • Macbook stopped working with certain display

My macbook randomly stopped recognizing with my external display (Niko 19"). The computer does not see the monitor or the monitor does not see the computer even when i tell it to detect displays. The weird part is that it still works with all other displays. My monitor also works with all other laptops I have tried with it (PC, macbooks, and macbook pros). I have tried with different cables/dvi-mini dvi adapters and same situation with all. When it stopped working was when i had my laptop unhooked for a weekend (traveling) the monitor was not touched while i was away which leads me to think software on my laptop. However it would not make sense for it to be a driver because it just stopped working with one certain monitor and not all. Does anybody have any idea what it could be?
    Carson

It's not impossible that corruption in the driver would be confined to one display and not affect others. You could try throwing away the related plist files. In /Library/Preferences there should be a file com.apple.windowserver.plist that can be trashed. Also, for your home account in /Users/accountname/Library/Preferences/ByHost should be com.apple.windowserver.xxxxxxxx.plist where xxxxxx is a string of letters and numbers and accountname is the name on the primary account. Throw that file away, too. Then restart.
When OS X restarts and finds those files missing from their expected location, it will generate fresh copies with factory default values. Hopefully that will clear up the issue with the Niko monitor not being properly recognized.

  • MacBook looses connection with external monitor

    Hey Apple humans!
I have a MacBook Pro (mid 2009) and an external monitor Samsung SyncMaster XL2370 connected via DVI/DisplayPort. Works fine since the mid of 2009 but in the last few days the MacBook looses connection with the monitor and isn't able to get the connection up again. The button "Monitore recognise" (don't know the exact translation of it in english) in preferences doesn't work, even a reboot brings nothing.
I've changed nothing on the setup, only the newest patches for OS X were installed. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english, right now I'm to ****** to concentrate

have a Mac Pro with 2 Samsung syncmasters and after updating os x to 10.6.6 computer loose the connection with the monitors. Randomly it seems, might work for a while and suddenly go black.
Have to restart the Mac. I'm sure it's related to the os update. Tried all resets, throwing prefs, emptying
    cache but nothing helps.

Any ideas on how to fix this probllem?
    Thanks

I sent it in for repair. Came back and it was still not working. Im waiting for lenovo to get back to me on it.

  • Macbook stopped working with a certain specific display (external DVI)

I've used the same external DVI flatscreen with my Macbook for over 2 years without any issue. A few days ago, it stopped working -- but only in that configuration (macbook/display1). The Macbook simply wouldn't recognize there was a display attached. This was true BOTH for booting OS X and for WinXP in BootCamp.
I did extensive testing, swapping in for all the various components, and found that each was still perfectly functional!
My searching of these discussions actually turned up another thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1778286) where someone was discussing the exact same bizarre behavior, but it was many months old and archived so I could not reply, so I'm rebooting it here.
I had more hardware and options for testing at my disposal than the guy in the original thread, though, being an actual tech...
    machines:
    - macbook1 (white 2.0ghz with both X and XP)
    - macbook2 (black, faster than the white, but I forget exactly)
    - dell (DVI out video, and winXP)
    Displays:
    - display1 (Hanns-G HU196 19" Flat Panel Monitor)
    - display2 (Dell 1908FP 19" Flat Panel LCD)
    - display3 (same as display2)
    miniDVI-to-DVI adapters:
    - adapter1 (apple's; about 3 years old)
    - adapter2 (apple's; brand new from Best Buy)
    DVI cables:
    - several known to be working
    LONG STORY SHORT:
    - neither macbook would output to display1!!
    - the dell box outputs just fine to display1
    - macbooks output just fine to display2 and display3
    - multiple adapters and cables were tested, too, just in case
What the **** is going on?
I have 2 theories... based on nothing but wild-*** guessing:
    1) some recent firmware update has somehow corrupted DVI communication with certain devices
    2) display1, itself, has a communication problem. Possibly, the DDC (display data channel) is no longer being sent and (again this is complete conjecture) for some reason the Macbooks' hardware requires this info while my Dell's hardware does not? Seems pretty far-fetched but the whole situation is just as nutty so...
    Anyone's guesses?

I'll add some more info to the above -- it was not a random thought:)
My monitor is a ViewSonic VX2235wm and its native resolution is 1680xI think 1050. I've hooked this up to a mac mini and more recently my white macbook. Although initially the macs recognise the monitor and set the right resolution, after a few days/weeks they will stop recognising it as will display the wrong resolution of 1600x1200.
I've thrown everything and the kitchen sink at this problem, pram resets, deleting random files, observing the console logs, SwitchResX, DisplayConfigX, holy water and every time some magic combination cures the problem until a few days/weeks later where it reoccurs for no apparent reason.
Everytime the issue occurs the EDID seems to be corrupted, which, of course, explains things. What I don't understand is 1) who corrupted it and more importantly 2) why doesn't it stay corrupted.
    So as I understand it:
    * firstly the EDID in the monitor can get corrupted, or give the appearance of being corrupted
    * the EDID can also be reset to the factory default EDID
    * the EDID may get corrupted by the mac itself
    * mac os x stores the monitor settings in the pram.
Therefore my theory is that the mac does something silly with its own settings, and causes the monitor to report a corrupt EDID. The problem should go away by resetting the mac and clearing out the pram (and at the same time try disconnecting the power from the monitor for a few minutes to restore the factory edid).
I've been following this remedy and it's worked so far, although on a technical level this raises an awful lot of questions and granted it is highly suspicious:) It seems highly dubious for example that the monitor would play such tricks with the EDID -- having an "apparent" as well as a "factory default" EDID; I'd expect the (one and only) EDID be locked away in a ROM and that's that.
However such EDID voodoo is not unheard of in the forums.
Anyway, hope this helps. I'll dig some more in the next few days and post any further findings.

  • Satellite P300: Display Driver has stopped working using external monitor

I have a number of these Satellite P300 PSPCCA-OC201Y and recently bought external monitors for them.
Since then we seem to be getting "Display Driver has stopped working and has recovered" messages, then after about 5 of these, it crashes.
Starting with one machine, I have updated display drivers, bios was current, all to no avail.
I then did a complete system restore back to original. Has not solved the problem.
    Any ideas?

    hi Keven Dickenson,
as you said you restored the system and still there is no way to get things work it may be a hardware issue...
i my opinion you should consult a servicepartner to check this out...
is there any of the machines working with the external monitor at all?
if none of them is able to connect to ext. display maybe your installation has a problem or the monitor is faulty...
try it with another monitor and recover one system to factory installation....

  • MacBook Pro freezing with external monitor?

I recently got an external monitor to use with my MBP (early 09). So it seems that if I have my monitor hooked up (and maybe also when my power cable is plugged in) and my computer goes into sleep mode, the whole thing freezes and i have to hard restart my MBP. Is there a reason it is doing this? Also, if i close my MBP, instead of the computer going to sleep, it makes it go into mirror display mode and keeps it running on my external monitor (and sometimes it doesnt even go into sleep mode...). i found this thread - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3190417?start=165&tstart=0 and it say to use the line:
    "sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0""
in the terminal to make lion/ML work like SL, but any clue what else that will change?

    Hi sgibson,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with the external display on your MacBook Pro. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature or scope of the issue you are describing. Are you using the display in extended desktop or mirroring mode? If you are using it in extended desktop mode, is the issue limited to the external display, or does it also freeze the primary display as well? Does the same thing happen if the display is directly connected to the MacBook Pro (i.e. without the dock)? • Blackcreen but works with external monitor

Hi, I need help with my moms notebook its HP not sure about the model but it's definitely one of those old ones.
so she was restarting her NB probabbly by taking the power cable off. Now the notebook wont load just blackscreen so I tried few usual stuff like taking the battery and power cable off and press power button for a minute and it didnt help so i decided to connect external monitor and both of them turned on even the notebook screen. however as soon i turn on her notebook without extra monitor there is blackscreen again.

    Hi @gcko ,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I saw your posts regarding the black screen. There isn't a whole of troubleshooting available when we can't get into the operating system or even the BIOS. Since you have already tried a Hard Reset with the battery then you will need to give us call as this is a hardware issue. • Macbook and XP with external monitor

I have my Macbook running windows XP & X. I have an external monitor hooked up, and when running X it works great. When I run under XP I cannot play games on the external monitor, it just plays on the macbook monitor. How can I resolve this?

Apple details the conditions necessary to close the lid without inducing sleep:
    - External mouse connected
    - External keyboard connected
    - External power connected
    - External monitor connected
Then and only then will the Mac not sleep when its lid is closed.

Hardware: A mid 2010 MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel, OSX 10.10.1, 8 GB RAM, connected to 23-inch Dell monitor via VGA through a Targus dock.
The external monitor frequently (four times today) freezes for no apparent reason. The cursor moves around the screen, but won't respond to clicks. The only way to clear the problem is to force a power down and reboot.
    What's up?

  • W520 screen saver wont work with external monitor.

I have a Dell 30" U3011 monitor connected via display port.
I have the computer set to "projector only" (when you hit windows-P).
There are no controls on the monitor to tell it to sleep.
In Windows 7, I have the screen saver set to "blank" after 10 minutes.  However, it never goes blank after 10 minutes - the screen saver never kicks in.
In the windows powerplan, I have it set to turn off the display after 15 minutes when plugged in.  It never turns of the display.
I have it set to dim the dipsplay afer 10 minutes to 0% brightness.  It never dims the display
In the Lenovo power manger,  I have "screen saver" ticked under Global power settings->Dynamic brighness control.  I cant find any more display saving type options under the lenovo power manager.
Its the standard Lenovo factory install of windows.
It works fine when using the internal Lenovo panel.
I have two dell laptops with windows 7, and neither has this problem - only the Lenovo.
The problem is, if I leave the computer on for say 5 hours, I come back and the screen is burnt in with the windows I have open. The monitor cost £1400 - I its as expensive as the Lenovo. If it came down to the lenovo or the montior, I think I would go with the monitor.
Any one got the same problem?
Putting the machine to sleep every time I leave the machine for more than 10 minutes would be a temporary workaround, except for the huge bug on the lenovo  "forgets" my external mintor settings when it wakes up - and goes back to the internal panel.  When I reboot, it always gets it right however, it does remember that I am on projector only.  However, rebooting every time I leave the machine for half an hour would requireme to wait for several minutes while the machine boots up - so thats not an option either.
    Solved!

Do yourself a favor.  Temporarily remove flash and re-test.

  • Macbook wont connect with external monitor

Hi. I recently bought a monitor to my desktop and a dvi to mini display port cable. It worked fine for a couple of weeks but now it won't connect with it. The monitors little light symbol turns blue for a couple of seconds but then says No signal. In the beginning i just had to shut down my mac, log in go plug it in but now it just won't work. Anyone that has tried the same and has a solution?

  • "Link to" slides won't work with external monitor

I built a presentation with a lot of "link to" commands in it.  It works perfectly when I run it on the desktop (MBP retina), but when I plug in a second monitor none of the link to's will work.  Why would that be and how can I fix it?

I tried a different adapter and this solved the problem.
