Macbook strange noise and 3hr battery life

Hi,
My new macbook (before-june09 model) is making a strange DVD Drive noise when I turnit on, restart and wake from sleep. It also gives me only 3hrs of battery life.
I recently exchange my 2.5GHz macbook with NO noise and 5 hrs of life because I wanted to upgrade for this 2.66GHz, 350 GB, 4MB RAM when the price dropped due to the new models.
Now I'm starting to regret,is anybody having the same problem, or I just got a bad one.
Thanks

This is the temp on my uni 08 vintage after adding a 256GB Crucial M4. That's right, 150 degrees Fahrenheit when measuring with a meat thermometer just above where the SSD resides in the chassis. The battery lasts about 38 seconds when I take it off power. .... I'll try the 0309 firmware to see if that helps.

I bought my 15" macbook pro just a year ago and my battery life runs out extremely quickly. This started maybe a month or two ago. Its hard to tell. I only noticed the rapid change recently. Fully charged it says I have 2:27 (2 hours and 27 minutes) of usage time...with about 50% screen and keyboard brightness.
I've checked inside system preferences and its cycle count is 261 and full charging cap is 6316.
I have apple care...is this something i can/need to take up with apple. You'd think if you pay the price for these machines you should get mroe use out of them.
ONLY A YEAR I'VE HAD THIS!
My PC lasted 4 years before the battery showed signs this dramatic of wear.
Any help is appreciated, im  new mac owner. thanks.

do you have a mbp with dual video cards? running the system with the higher end card increases the heat and also drains batt power.
i have the 1st gen unibody (2008) with an original removable battery of 311 cycles and 4453 charge. under normal use ill be happy to get 1.5hrs. the mac battery counter thing says i have 3.3hrs though (whatever). compared to me, i think you use your battery more than i do, perhaps its the reason why it degraded so fast in a year?

Installation of the new OSX is very heavy hdd load, in addition spotlight reindexes all the files on your computer - it may be a few hours. If in the future will be the same macbook hot, you should contact your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider.
May be required to clean notebook cooling system.
You can also install any monitoring utility sensors to your mac  such as Hardware Monitor  and look at the value of the temperature sensors.

  • The cause of the whine, heating and short battery life.

It seems like we've discovered how we could fix the whine, heating and the short battery life.
If you take a look at /var/log/System.log
    You will find this line:
    localhost configd[37]: com.apple.SystemConfiguration.DynamicPowerStep load failed
Yes, that's right. Intel SpeedStep is not implemented in Mac OS X.
It seems like Apple wanted to implement it, either the engineer in charge of it was screwed up or apple was hurrying to get macbook pro released...
This also explains why Macbook pro has a higher battery life, runs cooler without whine on a properly configured Windows XP (with updated intel drivers and microsoft hotfix). On Windows XP, when the system is Idle, CPU is throttled to 1GHz.
    So we have two options:
    1. Get Apple to implement it correctly - but so far it doesnt seem like apple is really concerned about this issue. Or rather, they don't seem to care.
    2. Implement it ourselves - A guy called Cryptonome was trying to implement the proper power management for MacBook Pros on Mac OS X to solve these "CPU whine", heating and battery life problems, and he did have some fruitful results, but it seems like he's currently too busy or something to finish the implementation.
Unfortunately I am not a genius so I cannot implement anything like this... anyone?
    What do you guys think?

That's exactly what I am doing : expecting a solution from Apple. And you know what, Apple today released a new system update for the keyboard. This update is for all the MacTels including MacBook Pro. And guess the next thing... This update fix a power draw in the MacBook USB... Great... Oh, no, in fact not so great because this bug is THE bug that allows to stop the whine (through Mirror, etc)...
Is there anyone in Apple that tests fixes before to release them ? Do those engineers working on the whine fix have given a look to that patch ? I really hope that Apple is doing something, but releasing this Keyboard patch for MBP now can mean 3 things (IMHO) :
    - the whine patch is on the final steps and will be released soon, so killing the workarounds for the whine is not a problem,
    - or Apple has a partial (or even none) knowledge about this problem, and they should hire better engineers, because many people made a lot of discovers about this whine, not beeing engineers,
    - or Apple definitly doesn't care about this whine problem, and they will loose myself as a customer (and probably others).

  • I got my iphone 5 3 weeks ago and the battery life is very short. It drains out very fast. Does anyone know if it's a problem with the iOS or with my phone? Because I'm a bit concerned

I recieved my iPhone 5 3 weeks ago and the battery life completely *****! After doing a few things and maybe using it for about 30 minutes the phone start overheating like crazy then the battery starts dropping very fast. Does anyone know if it's a problem with the iOS or with my phone? And is anyone else expierenceing these problems?

It sounds like you have an app that is incorrectly continuously using data and power... from normal use the phone should NOT be getting that warm... only constant video playing via data like Netflix for example would result in that...
I'd say that you should remove all apps in the recent app tray... tunr phone off... then once you power back on...
Hold BOTH home and sleep wake buttons together until you see a white apple symbol... then release both buttons...
This will ensure you have no apps running...
I've experienced a hang up with mail while out and about that has resulted in this on my iPhone as well... Once I performed these steps it was fixed... it seemed like it got stuck and that's what caused the warm phone and battery drain...
I notived that when it gets stuck (mail app that is) I will see the text connecting at the bottom and it never changes to "updated" like it should... this is my trigger that it's gotten stuck.
Have not really figured out what causes mail app to get stuck yet...

here is an interesting thing: take the iphone and set lock screen to never. Now make an email with siri--be sure to activate her with call button. get to the body and get some text in there. then just stop talking. LOCK SCREEN APPEARS!!!!!! and of course you draft is gone.
There does seem to be a work around for some--maybe all these issues. Don't use the call button--use the buttons on the phone.
Siri seems to behave properly with scenerio above---sans call button. She does not go to lock.

  • Ipod touch 2G overheats and loses battery life

recently purchased bookworm for the touch. I usually listen to tunes while playing most games. I noticed that when I do this with while playing bookworm the back of the touch gets hot and my battery life goes from hours to one hour. By hot I mean kind of uncomfortable to hold hot. Any suggestions?

One thing I can think of is to remove any case on the ipod when you are using so that the heat can escape easier. I notice mine gets pretty hot when I charge and I used to leave the case on and had a few battery-life problems because of it

  • IPhone 5 hotter than Venus and dreadful battery life after beginning to use photo streams?

You may be able to tell from the title i have an issue.
Set up the photo stream today after my bro in law shared pictures. Phone immediately heated up to ridiculous levels and my battery life has been dreadful.
I've had the phone since start of June and had good battery life and no issues with heat, done the ios7 update last week (with no problems) so I reckon the issue is with the photo stream feature but I'm no tech wizard.
I've done a few searches for an answer but not found anything.
    Any help would be great
    Cheers

i am having same problem lately with my Iphone 5 and IOS7. I see my phone gets very hot when using the camera (or the gps apps). but even when I turn the camera off as well as GPS, the drainage is growing and when it gets to 24% it shuts down !!!! dead, I connected to the usb cable and it started but showed 0%.... very frustrating indeed !!!! would I be experiencing same issues with the new 5S I ordered already ??
I see your comment about the "photo stream" - it sounds potential problem - I wonder if any other colleagues will bring this up as well ?!
I turned off the Photo Sharing - will see if it's better, I did not want to turn off the Photo Stream becasue I did npt want to lose all my stored photos in te Icloud.
is there something wrong with the camera ??

  • Hot battery and short battery life after download of Mountain Lion.

Hot battery and short battery life after download of Mountain Lion.  Any suggestions?

    As in, shortly after install?
Note after you install Mountain Lion it's likely that the Spotlight index will be rebuilt.  This will take some time and the machine will run hot.  After this completes, which could take 1-2 hours, things should return more to normal.
If they don't, I suggest running Activity Monitor and seeing if you can trace what is eating up CPU cycles.

  • Strange noise and flashing lights -- can this be battery/power-related?

I have had two occurrences of a very strange sound and never-before-seen flashing of a light on my TiBook. Here is what happened:
I recently got a new battery (a NewerTech Extend 4800) for my 3 year-old PowerBook. I carefully followed the directions that came with the battery and installed it, then plugged in the power adapter to charge it up. I then started the computer so I could see the battery’s progress. Upon start-up, a “whooo” sort of sound came out of the computer for a few moments and the little sleep indicator light flashed several times (as did the apple light on the back of the computer lid). Nothing appeared to be out of order and the computer started normally otherwise. I was able to monitor the battery’s progress and since everything seemed to work normally and no one I talked to seemed to think I’d damaged anything, I just used the computer normally for the next two weeks with no problems.
Then last night the computer just shut down all by itself – I did not put it to sleep and it is not set to go to sleep on its own (my power saving setting is only set to dim the screen), nor did I click “shut down.” I thought perhaps somehow the power cord had not been attached and the battery had run down, although the new battery has been warning me properly when the battery is getting low, so that doesn’t make sense. It would not wake, so I restarted it. Upon restart, the same noise and flashing light situation occurred again.
I called the company that sold me the battery and the tech guy’s suggestion there was to reset the PMU and he gave me an Apple article to instruct me on how to do that. I have done that, but there is no evidence that that has solved whatever the issue was. I am hoping that someone can identify the sound and lights pattern and advise me as to whether it is some more serious issue, or if it’s nothing to worry about. It has been suggested to me that it is possibly a power adaptor issue, but since I’ve run down and recharged the battery without incident several times in between the two occurrences, that doesn’t seem logical either. Is there a known signal a computer makes when there is some power/charging issue?
Thanks for any help you have or for at least posting if you have had a similar experience. So far, no one I’ve talked to has ever heard of this before.

    Hi ChloeB,
Your description of the "moaning" sounds at startup sounds like something I'm dealing with. I came across the following post by EWW in the "My Powerbook Won't Start Up". I recommend the link and wish to specifically credit EWW with the posting, as I found it helpful. The URL is

Hi, limberlingo, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2 (Oct. 1999 and later Macs)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58442
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
Your Powerbook is not detecting any good RAM at startup. This may indicate that your RAM (all of it — do you have one module or two installed?) has gone bad, or that it isn't seated properly. The first thing to try is reseating it: remove the module(s) and then reinsert it(them). Then try starting up again. If that doesn't do the trick, and you have only one RAM module, it's probably bad and will have to be replaced. A single RAM module having intermittent problems before failing completely (as it apparently has now) would account for all your problems.
If you have two modules, it's much less likely that both of them have failed or loosened in their slots simultaneously. Post back with results of your testing.

There's another thread I found where one of the causes of a three-tone warning was found to be a pinched ribbon cable coming off the bottom of the trackpad. You can find that in the thread titled "Solution to Freezes Caused By Ribbon Cable" - - the information provided by Marc Posner, Anthony Brade and others.

  • Wireless driver triggers warm/hot macbook and low battery life after OS 10.8 mountain lion upgrade

    Hello frustrated Macbook users.
I have tried to get help on other Apple discussions but no one seems to want to help, they aren't actually reading my posts, or they hate me for some reason.
    No matter.
If you have a warm Macbook that has 2.5 hours of battery life where you used to have 4 or more, please do this simple procedure and write the result below.
    Turn OFF Airport wireless networking
Perform an SMC reset (Power Manager)
Connect an ethernet cable and use your Macbook normally. (but do NOT turn on wireless networking again)
How is your battery life after doing this?
I have a user over here who reclaimed decent battery performance if he doesn't use his Airport wireless.
    I need confirmation.
If so, I may get a USB wireless adapter and see if the battery life stays good.
Bonus points:  If you have a Mac compatible USB wireless adapter and got good results by turning off the built-in adapter, want to test it for me and report the results?
    Thanks and good luck!

    UPDATE:
Problem persists when using Recovery Partition.
Chance sthat it is third party softwae or updates is more or less eliminated.
Update 10.8.3 beta fixed the problem for one lucky early adopter.
Hypothesis: New battery charging algorithms programmed into Mountain Lion OS10.8 triggered problems from design flaws that were NOT an issue for OS 10.7 and before.
Battery replacements were successful where the replacement battery was built within tolerances that did not fail under 10.8's new charging algorithms. Other bateries did not meet those tolerances so you would get spotty results from battery replacements.  It worked sometimes, but not always.
OS 10.8.3 may have adjusted these algorithms to be less demanding on the features of the battery that were failing.
