Macbook suddenly takes 5 minutes to boot up

I was gone over the weekend and when I returned I turned my Macbook on. It literally took over 5 minutes for it to get past the apple page before finally opening everything up. Once it's up and running everything seems to be running fine. I turned it off last night when I booted up again today it did the same thing again. Any ideas of what that could be and how i can fix it?

Hey Jesse,
Try doing a safe boot (restarting the computer pressing and hold the shift key) you do need to login, once your at the login screen you can just click restart and see if it got any faster
Reset SMC (remove battery and power adapter and press and hold the power button for 5 seconds)
Also try repairing disk permissions
Applications folder > utilites > disk utility
Select macintosh HD on the left hand side and click repair disk permissions!

  • Snow leopard suddenly takes 5 minutes to boot up on macbook pro?

I have snow leopard on my new macbook pro and everything was fine until all of a sudden it took 5 minutes to log in and I couldn't connect to the internet which I know was working. It would also make me log in every time it booted up when I have it saved as automatic login. I then repaired disk permissions and internet access works yet it still takes 5 minutes to boot up. I was wondering if anyone could help me. Thanks.

  • Gray screen on startup - Takes 6 minutes to boot up

When I power up my Macbook I get a gray screen and it takes 6 minutes to boot up.

With your configuration. ML will run no sweat.
The problem is that ML is available only as a download via Mac App store
And Mac App Store application is available only in Snow Leo
    You might:
Ge t Snow Leo install disc for $29 from Amazon
Then buy ML from the APp Store
    or
Get a USB isntall key for Lion (expensive),
    then upgrade to ML
    the former would be preferred.
UPgrade to ML from Snow Leo will cost ya $19

  • HT1338 MacBook now takes 1 minute to go to sleep after all windows closed, any help to return it to normal

MacBook now takes >1 minute to go to sleep after all applications are closed.  Need help in returning it to the normal 10 sec for sleep

First, Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk. You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.
    Then Repair Permissions.
No need to report any Permissions errors........we all get them.

  • My mac mini takes 5 minutes to boot up

I have had my Mac Mini for about a year now, have always run Mountain Lion on it, but in the last month it takes 5 minutes to boot up when I turn it on (turning on to the log in page).  Everything else works fine.  I have done Disk Utilities, and the permissions are all fine, I verified the disc and that is all fine.  I have two other drives plugged into it, one 500GB USB for Time Machine and one 250GB firewire for data storage and my iTunes items.  The Mac Mini is a 2.3GHz processor with 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM.
Any ideas please?  5 minutes is very slow for a computer to boot in 2013.  Thanks.

Open Console in Utilities, go to system.log, enter boot or BOOT_ in the filter field. Please post just the bootup sequence, no other messages, of those ~five minutes, from BOOT_TIME, or however it's worded until "setting hostname to "yourusername.local." If the time stamps, which we must see are not included, then post back without posting the log, since it will be useless.

  • Mavericks boot takes 5 minutes after Boot Camp

The boot of my MacBook Air is taking too much time, about five minutes according to my tests.
Yesterday I reinstalled OS X and then installed Windows 8.1 on a Boot Camp partition. After choosing the boot disk from OS X settings, the boot of my OS X partition takes some minutes, instead of the previous 11-12 seconds. The boot stops on Mac logo and loading indicator for 5 minutes.
Instead, Windows is loading very fast.
    Any solution?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

  • Why does it take 5 minutes to boot up?

Why does y Macbook air takes more than 5 minutes to boot up?

There are a couple of things you can do.
#1: perform a safe boot. shut down your computer and after you hit the power button, hold down the shift key until you get to the login screen.
#2 got to system preferences > startup disk (under system) > then select Macintosh HD then hit restart.
#3 go the the apple logo in the top left-hand corner and select shut down. uncheck the box that says to reopen windows when powered back up.
Hopefully this helps, but if it doesn't, you should take it to apple because that is not normal!

  • MacBook Pro takes 7 minutes to restart. Is it ok?

    I have a MacBook Pro:
      Nombre del modelo: MacBook Pro

When it becomes slow during the day, I restart it. Sometimes it takes very long just to shut down (the spinning bars keeps rotating in a black background), approximately two minutes. So, I rather simply turn it off (I click OK in the "do you really want to do it" warning), this method is faster.
Either way, my MacBook takes long to restart. It begins with a grey background for a minute or less, then a slim bar appears under Apple logo and starts to fill. This process takes three minutes, more or less. Then, when the bar is filled completely, the login screen with my photo appears. I login and immediately the pesky warning "Do you want to reopen application" appears; I click "Cancel". The desktop background picture appears, but just that, no menu bar, no dock, no icons. MacBook stays in this state for two and a half minutes. Then dock appears, no menu bar yet. I try to start an application with the Launcher icon in the dock but the screen gets blurred with the legend "Loading applications..." and MacBook stays in that state for another minute or more. I scape this blurred screen, I try to click something else but nothing is clickable, until menu bar appears. Then starts loading, clock mini icon, battery, TimeMachine, BlueTooth, iTranslate, DPS and other icons painfully slow. When everything seems to be on place, I click any item in the menu bar and the computer doesn't responde until the third click. Then everything starts working normal... until mid-afternoon, when the computer has become so slow that I have to restart it again.
As you can see, it is really frustrating, painful, unproductive.
    Is this normal?
    What can I do?

  • Suddenly takes long time to boot up, then odd behaviors...suggestions?

My computer is about six weeks old and has been fantastic up to this point. Beginning two days ago, however, it started acting odd, not recognizing external drives, etc. A reboot has always fixed such problems before (with other Macs). When I rebooted, I noticed it took 4 to 5 minutes for the desktop to come up. I've noticed other weird problems, like the mouse buttons (both external mouse and pad) don't work. Every reboot takes several minutes and the problems only seem more pronounced.
Any suggestions before I make an appointment with a Mac Genius?

Boot in Safe Mode (which runs some basic housecleaning) - reboot and hold the Shift key at startup.
Run Utilities > Disk Utility, select your HDD and click Verify Disk (not permissions). If errors are found, you'll need to boot from your Install DVD 1, wait for the menu bar (after language selection), select Utilities menu > Disk Utility, then select your HDD and click Repair Disk. You may need to repeat that step once.

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. Depending on what install method you chose, any problems you had with 10.5 could be transferred the the new install. You may not have realized you even had any.
    Then Repair Permissions.

  • My iMac takes 10 minute to boot!

I've had some problems with my iMac recently, culminating in it not booting at all. I then carried out a clash and burn re-install and then restored my time machine back up.
Everything seemed fine for a few days but now it's taking over 10 minutes to boot!
I've tried virtually everything I can think of to fix it (having trawled these forums) including all your usual, PRAM, permissions etc etc.
When booting with CMD-V the system seems to get stuck for about 5-7 minutes on this entry:
    AppleYukon2: RxRingSize <=1024, TxRingSize 256 etc etc.
I don't know what this is.
The other issue is that on restoring Time machine, Little Snitch went a bit crazy and blocked all my network connections and email. Could that possibly be causing any problems?
    Any help much appreciated!

Ken, it sounds like you iMac could be looking for another boot drive. You can go to System Preferences, Startup Disk and then choose your internal drive and click re-start. Give that a try and let us know if it started up any faster.
If you have any other devices such as a TM drive, iPod or another external HD that could cause the system to be temporarily confused as to what your start up volume is. Once you do the above step that should take care of the issue.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • Computer takes 20 minutes to boot.

My PC takes about 20 minutes to boot, and if it even does boot. It gets stuck at the BIOS start up with the MSI  8Xtreme Series Intel on the black screen, and just sits there.. Is there a way to move some jumpers and reset the BIOS to factory defaults, if that is even the problem. Please if anyone has ANY idea about how to take care of this, im willing to do anything, Im sitting here in college, neededing to write this paper, and my Laptop has a small screen compaired to my desktop. Thanks
    -Joe
PS. The PC dosnt even get past that part it seems... Please help!!

Remove all the hardware (PCI cards, USB devices, HDDs, CDROMs etc..) and only keep the bare minimum yuo need (memory, CPU, VGA card).
Don't even connect a mouse and KB to it.
Does it work normally (give you a KB error message probably) ?
Try another KB if it seems ok (and make sure you plug it in the right place), don't overlook any detail in such cases.

Just built a new computer and from the "get go" the bios has taken approximately five minutes to boot. Error codes are 99 (last 4 minutes) than switches to B4 (last 1 minute) than the system boots just fine. I've tried the following:

On another note, anyone have any thoughts on how I can solve this mouse USB problem?
Yes. Please open a ticket with MSI Tech Support so they are aware of the mouse problem with your mainboard. They can then try & duplicate it & come up with a revision to hopefully correct the incompatibility; http://support.msi.com
