MacBook suddenly won't detect my TV anymore - already tried anything

Hello everyone,
I hope I can find help here... I couldn't find any in Apple Stores...
_+*If you don't want to read the long text, there are some cliff notes below*+_
I have a problem with my 42" Toshiba LCD TV.
Here's my setup:
MacBook 13" Unibody with 4GB RAM, Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and all the latest updates.
I used to use it as my movie display, only plugging it in when watching a movie etc... For work I am using a Dell 2209WA, which is still working perfectly with exactly the same cable configuration.
My connection should be standard and looks like this:
1. Mini-Display Port to DVI
2. DVI-to-HDMI-cable
3. Plugged in into my TV
Some day, I decided to watch a movie, plugged of the Dell and plugged in the Toshiba TV. No signal, my MacBook didn't even detect any external display.
I searched up the internet, and found that there were problems with the update 10.6.2, and after 10.6.3 seemed to work for most of the persons concerned, 10.6.4 seemed to mess it up once more.
Fortunately I am running time machine, so I started to restore older OS X versions, starting with 10.5.8 and going the way all up to 10.6.4 again. It just wouldn't work. So I formatted my MacBook and made a fresh install of Mac OS Snow Leopard, again starting with every single update step. But nothing worked, so I restored my latest 10.6.4 backup.
I went to a friend's house and connected my MacBook with the same cables to his TV, and it worked perfectly. I then visited an Apple Store, describing my problem and connecting it to their TV - it worked. I was like... come on!!!
Nevertheless I bought a new MiniDisplay-Port-to-DVI-Adapter I could bring back any time, just to test it. I even bought new cables. Nothing helped.
I then started to reset PRAM, and CMS. I moved stored display profiles to trash, restarting and hoping it would work, but nothing...
Any time I connect the DisplayPort, my MacBook screen blinks, as it should, but does not recognize any display. I tried SwitchResX, nothing as well.
_+*Here are the Cliffnotes of what I've done and what's going on:*+_
MacBook won't recognize/detect Toshiba TV
MacBook recognizes/detects Dell TFT with same cable configuration
MacBook works fine with other TVs
I changed cables
I changed HDMI ports
I tried another adapter (DisplayPort)
PRAM and SCM reset without success
Deleting display profiles without success
I tried every Snow Leopard Release from 10.5.8 to 10.6.4
SwitchResX did not work
I restored my TV's standard configuration, and turned any auto image adjustion off
checked whether MacBook is concerned by nvidia callback - negative
It seems that there is either a problem with my television or with my driver's/software's configuration on the MacBook. Maybe it is sending a signal/resolution that cannot be displayed, but why should it?
If it does, it would have to detect the TV first I guess... A fact that brings me to the point that it might be the TV and not the MacBook is that it didn't even work with a fresh installed SL, so there were definately no wrong display profiles saved and applied.
I don't know what to do, is there anyone who can help me? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Regards from Germany

dohdoh1985, I have the exact same problem also! I recently bought a 42" RCA LCD TV. I connected my MacBook Pro to my TV using a Dynex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter that I got from BestBuy. It worked great until I upgraded to Mac OS 10.6.4 and then it suddenly stopped working. Same TV, same settings, same cables, same adapter. Nothing changed since the last time it worked except that my OS was upgraded to 10.6.4, so i am assuming that is the culprit. The symptoms are EXACTLY the same as what dohdoh1985 described; when I plug in the TV, the laptop display flashes (3 times) as though it is detecting an external display and the picture on the TV briefly goes from blue to black for about 1 second then back to blue. The TV does not appear in the display menu / control panel and there is no sign that the MacBook detected it. I went through the usual troubleshooting steps (reset PRAM, checked connections, tv settings, etc) but nothing worked. Other HDMI sources (i.e. Blu-ray player) work fine on the TV using the same HDMI cable on the same port so there is nothing wrong with the cable, the TV or the TV's input settings.
Meanwhile, I can still connect my MacBook to my external ViewSonic monitor at work without any problems. It's just the TV that's not working.
I cancelled my cable subscription a while ago since I only watch shows online nowadays and this was my only way of watching TV shows, so I'm quite upset.
Apple, please help!

  • Solution to 'my macbook won't detect my wifi anymore'

So my macbook connected to my wifi fine, then suddenly it stopped detecting it even though every other device I had detected it fine. After hours of searching the web I finally found a solution that worked for me. I saw that this problem is fairly common so I thought I'd share it on here aswell.
All you need to do is go to network preferences, select airport, then advanced, then under preferred networks delete the network you're trying to detect (you may want to write down its name at this point), then click apply. Turn off airport then turn it on again. Then click 'join other network' and manually type in your networks name and password in and it should connect.
This method worked for me and hopefully it'll work for anyone else having this problem.

You should mark this post with the "This solved my question" check mark so that others no there is a solution here rather than a post with only views and no replys.  Good find by the way!

  • Macbook pro won't detect VGA display

My MacBook Pro (15-inch i7 Early 2011) won't detect an external display using an apple mini displayport -> VGA connector using 10.7.3.
All cables and the monitor are fine because my white macbook detects the LG monitor without any problem.
I have read and tried every 'sollution' suggested on the internet, but all fail. Since my MBPro can't even detect my Sony LCD TV (my white macbook does) i suspect it's a firmware/hardware issue.
I want to buy a thunderbolt display, but am not sure if i can spend all this money when even this simple VGA connection won't work.
Has anyone the same VGA detection problem but with a working thunderbolt display connection?

  • My Macbook suddenly won't read my usb drive..

My 2012 Macbook Pro Retina suddenly won't read my usb drive (its a Kingston 16gb DataTraveler se9 if it matters).
I was just using it yesterday and it was just fine. Did the drive just fail? Or could it be something with the Macbook?
It shows up on disk utility but verify and repair disk is greyed out. This is the first time I've had this problem in 15 months
of use. My Lacie external drive still works just fine and I tried out another se9 and it worked fine too..

Thanks, but my drive is accessible through disk utility, but when ever i attempt to verify it or repair it, disk utility just doesn't respond and i have to force quit.

  • Macbook Pro won't detect internal drive.

So Last night my macbook pro fell off a desk about 2 feet high. At the time I was running Iweb on it. I thought everything was okay but after about 15 minutes it bagan acting slow. When I would click something it would take about 5 seconds for the computer to register the command. I thought maybe it was more due to being on all day. So I figured I would give it arrest. I shut my computr down and went to bed.
MIdday the next day I turn my computer on and find that it just stays on the boot screen never getting to the log in window. So I decided to do a hardware test with the disk that  came with my comp. But the test never finishes. It just keeps going and going. It would almost reach the very end and stay there. SO then I decided to just reinstall with the install disk that cme with my comp too. But the install disk does not detect a drive.
I tried the "single user mode" 3 times and it tells me the drive "can not be repaired" and that it was "modified" So I then proceeded to check system profiler and under ATA it says "This computer contains no ATA devices". Under serial-ATA I see the HItachi HTSS.... under NVidia MCP89 AHCI.
Does this mean my Drive is just dead. I never backed up any of my files. I was thinking about buying an external hard drive from fingerhut since it's the only kind they have up there and they do financing. http://www.fingerhut.com/product/Electronics/Computers-Tablets/Hard-Drives-Stora ge/Western-Digitals-500GB-External-Hard-Drive/pc/25275/c/25299/sc/25844/NT324.ut s
My warranty just ranout 6 days go >_< is there anything I could do to fix my hard drive?
Also could it be a bad connection to the drive and not the drive itself. If I take it to the apple store can they figure out which one is the problem?

I can understand that financing is important if you really need to get something but can't put up the full price.  That drive goes for about $99 (US).  Fingerhut is selling it to you for $150 (that's a 50% markup).  If you're financing a product in this range, I'd imagine you really need to look out for what you spend...  keep in mind, you're tossing $50 away in doing so.

  • Macbook won't detect external display anymore - Random shutdown injury??

    Hi,
my Macbook has the dreaded random shutdown thing happening, often it can't even get through the startup sequence. If I reset the PMU and PRAM and check the disk every week I can keep it running. Applecare are making not particularly helpful suggestions like "run it in safe mode" - hello people, random means it can take days to happen again... I use this computer for work so I need it at full capacity every day!!!
Anyway, enough angry ranting. The casualty of today's RS and subsequent PRAM PMU resetting is my external display (Viewsonic LCD). The macbook is no longer sending signals to it (display says "no signal"). When I ask the macbook to "detect displays" nothing happens. I have restarted the macbook several times and unplugged and replugged the display connection it doesn't help. Yes, I have the AC power cable plugged in on the Macbook (I know it doesn't like talking to the screen if I don't).
The display and macbook have always worked fine together in the past...
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to test for causes or fix this display related problem?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

You don't mention ever having brought the problem to Apple's attention, or what resulted from your request for Apple's help with it. This isn't a universal or widespread problem. It may be a hardware fault in your own equipment that needs to be resolved with a repair, or it may be a software problem (corrupt file, incompatible software conflict, update needed, etc., etc.). You seem to think Apple should have fixed it for you without your lifting a finger, and you're eager to complain about Apple's lack of support. But you've offered nothing to indicate that Apple even knows you need support. You do have to ask for it. Have you done so?
We have no idea what steps you've taken to try to narrow down the possibilities, e.g., making sure the monitor is turned on; trying a different video cable as iVmichael has suggested; testing the monitor with the same cable on a different computer; testing a different monitor with the same cable and then with a diferent cable on your computer; substituting a different cable adapter, if you are using one; applying all applicable system software updates and then Repairing Permissions and Repairing Disk; starting in Safe Mode and seeing whether the monitor is recognized and activated then; seeing whether the monitor is detected in System Profiler; and so on. You may have done some of these things, but you haven't told us about them or about the results.

  • Mac Pro suddenly won't detect display anymore!

Hi - I have a 2008 Mac Pro (two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors) and I believe it came with a ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT stock video card. I have been connecting it to a 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display (DVI connection) with no problems and suddenly when I went to start up my Mac a few days ago the display remained black. I never had flickering or any issues before that. The display is clearly powered on and I hear the Mac chime and drive spin, but see no video connection.
I hooked up my laptop to the Apple display to make sure it was okay, and sure enough my laptop desktop immediately appeared. I disconnected all peripherals from the Mac, connected the display to the second DVI port, then rebooted the Mac - still no video. I tried rebooting from the original OSX CD and I also reset the PRAM, nothing helped!
Is my video card fried? Or could it be the slot the card is in? How can I troubleshoot further? I want to be sure it's the video card before I go buy a new one...any suggestions? Thanks!

    Hi-
Try a Safe mode boot (hold Shift while starting).
Try to boot to the Apple Hardware Test Disc. Run the test.
Remove and reseat the graphics card.
If all these fail to restore or show video, replace the graphics card.

  • Macbook Air won't detect Apple TV or wireless printer

I purchased a Macbook Air with Mavericks a couple of months ago and had a wireless HP Photosmart printer, which I set up on the macbook. The machine recognised it over the wireless network and then all of a sudden one day I could not print to it. So I removed it to try a reinstall and the macbook would not detect it again after that. I have had to buy a cable to physically connect the printer to the machine when I need to print or scan.
Then I recently got my hands on an Apple TV a couple of weeks ago and it is working fine on the network, I can mirror the iPad on it but when it comes to the macbook, the Airplay Display is showing "No device detected". However, when I open iTunes and all of the Home Sharing is enabled etc (I have followed all of the guidelines to enable all of the settings for sharing ...), I go into Computers on the Apple TV and it attempts to load my iTunes library for a couple of minutes, after which time it says it could not connect.
I'm basically wondering if there is some setting on the macbook that I can't find that may need to be changed to allow me to see devices over the wifi at home.
I've been looking for a while but may just be looking in the wrong places. Any help appreciated for an Apple Noob

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • MacBook Pro won't detect network printer Canon MF4150

I have a multifunction printer, Canon MF4150, hooked upto a PC Desktop and I have enabled printer sharing. The printer is detected and works fine on my PC Laptop. However, when I try installing it on my 13" MacBook Pro, the **** thing won't show up. It doesn't show up under the Windows category of Print and Fax so I tried to set it up the way Apple has suggested in their support section. It asks you to go to advance and input the IP address and location of the printer and then select the printer driver. I would post the link but I conveniently can't find it right now. The printer driver is obviously not listed on the list, so I go to the Canon website and download a mac version of the driver and install it. When I check to see if it's on the list now, it says MF4360-MF4390, but not MF4150. I thought I had installed the wrong one but I downloaded and installed it again, and I got the same problem. Anyone have this printer or have a similar problem? Another way to hookup this printer would be much more convenient, is there anyway that the Window tab could detect it? Any help is appreciated!

  • My macbook air won't detect display when trying to hook up with mini port and hdmi cable

The screen turns blue and all it just won't show arrangments and then mirro display.. help!

Try it, a complete power off/on!
MacBook Air using Sony TV as monitor via Thunderbolt and HDMI.
I could not get my 32inch Sony Bravia to "see" my 2102 MBAir using the Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter and a known good HDMI cable.
So I took my MBAir to my local Apple Store,Encinitas California, along with the TBolt Adapter and a known good HDMI cable.
The salesman tried the same connection from my Air to their 40inch Sony Bravia using my cables.  It worked perfectly. The Apple salesman advised  I return home and make the same connections to my 32" Sony, turning it off and back on.  I realized I had already done that test several times.  Then, it occurred to me that _Sony "off "using the Sony Remote Control is not the same as _Sony off completely. So I returned home and disconnected the AC power from the 32" for over 30 seconds then turned it back on with the Air &Sony connected via the Thunderbolt-to-HDMI connection and  with the MBA turned on. The image came right up on screen and is still working.  So, is this yet another case of " when in doubt re-boot" ?

  • Anybody knows why my iPod 160 GB suddenly won't sync my Contacts anymore?

It was working alright before I "upgraded" to Snow Leopard and iTunes 9... suddenly I cannot sync my contacts into my iPod (a VERY valuable feature!)... I have been to MacStores and they have no idea... any solutions out there?
    Thanks!

    Hi
I have a similar problem. Everything went fine, but after installing Snow and Itunes 9.1 My ipod classic 80 GB did not sync Contacts and Calendars anymore. There is also a problem with the battery suddenly.
After having fully charged and I open music after 2 minutes it completely goes blank telling me there is a very low battery status. I do not know if this is by accident or it also hve to do with all the hardware problems people encounter with the iTunes 9.0
Does anybody have the same problem with battery?
    thks

  • My Macbook suddenly won't recognise my external hard drive

    Hi there.
I am using an Intenso 2,5" MemoryStation as an external hard drive. I have a few folders with pictures on it and my TimeMachine. When I plug it in it would usually show up on my desktop and start backing up my hard disk automatically. Something has now changed.
My dad gave my Macbook a new hard disk with more storage. When he put it in, he first safety copied all my stuff onto a separate external hard drive - ie. not my own. My Macbook is working perfectly and looks and acts exactly like before. But when I plug in my external hard drive, it now doesn't show up, neither on my desktop nor in disk utility. I can see that the external hard drive is responding as a light switches on and off when I plug it in and out; I don't think it is broken as I have taken very good care of it.
I'm worried that I have formatted my external hard drive so that it will only respond to a (now old) backup of my Macbook, which I can't access from my new hard disk.
I do also have the external hard drive that my dad originally used to backup all my stuff - with the older backup. Is there a way I can have my external hard drive read the new external hard drive (with the old backup of my Macbook)? Or has anyone experienced anything like this before?
Sorry if it got a bit complicated. It is evident that I am no tech expert.
    Best,
    Anne Sofie
