Macbook that dies when not plugged in
I'm wondering if it is worth bringing my old macbook in to see if I can get it fixed, versus paying for a new macbook. It no longer works unless it is plugged in, and I have even tried new batteries.
Thanks!

My iPhone 5 dies when not plugged in.
I got a new iPhone 5 from the Apple Store a little less than a month ago. I haven't dropped it, gotten it wet, scratched it or anything since the time I recieved it, and it always has a case. My phone died unexpectantly at 80% and when I plugged it into the charger it took over an hour to turn back on, when it did, it still had 80%. I unplugged it when it got to 100% and it lasted for less than ten minutes until it died again. I plugged it back in and it took relatively thirty minutes to turn back on, when it did, it had 100%. I tried unplugging it again, this time it lasted until 86% when it died. This continued every time it charged. I tried using three different USB cables, tried plugging it into the wall, my laptop, and even a friend's portable charger, and the problem still happened. It was slowly getting worse (dying as soon as it was unplugged with 100% charge) I went to the apple store and they ran diagnostics on it, it came back with nothing wrong. Battery was fine. The man told me to go home, back up my phone, and restore it to original settings and it should be fine. He expressed to NOT RESTORE MY PHONE TO THE BACK UP. I spent roughly two hours restoring my phone, setting it up as a new phone, and downloading apps, adding email, music, books, etc. As soon as I unplugged it from restoring it, it died again. I am getting angry with the iPhone 5, as my old one died and wouldn't turn back on, and it is the only phone they will give me as a replacement. It took three hours out of my time to go to the apple store and be told something that doesn't even work and would take two hours to accomplish. I am currently using my laptop for iMessages and when in need of my phone having to be with a charger and and be around an outlet at all times. Is this problem fixable without having to go back to the Apple Store or taking apart my phone? My phone is not jailbroken, nor have I downloaded anything onto it besides syncing music from my iTunes Library. It is up to the latest software update.
It may not be relevant but the service bar will always say 'searching' even though I have service and can send messages.Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as NEW device. If those don't solve your problems, you'll need to go to Apple for evaluation.

2009 MacBook Pro on Snow Leopard crashes when operating on battery only. Works fine when plugged in. The battery holds a charge as indicated by the battery monitor in the menu bar and the green lights on the side.
Is this a hardware issue/battery issue/software issue??
Thanks!Hi s,
Sounds like battery. Go to Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > Hardware > Power and see what it says for batt condition and also cycles. -
Macbook Pro Crashes When Not Plugged In
My Macbook Pro is crashing lately whenever it isn't plugged in. This has been happening since like January, and I have had my laptop for more than a year so my warranty expired. It kind of annoys me, because I can't really use my laptop as a laptop anymore since it is crashing whenever it isn't plugged in.
I'm guessing something is wrong with the battery. The screen literally just goes black and crashes within seconds of unplugging my laptop. It is weird, because it says the battery is 100 % charged at the top and then it crashes randomly.

I have a late 2011 macbook 2.7 GHz i7. This wasn't a gradual thing, it just happened all of a sudden. I had upgraded to mountain lion of which I de-fragged my hard-drive thinking it was a hard drive issue, and am now running snow leopard but it hasn't made a difference. Is there like a energy saving option I am unaware of?? Please help, its driving me crazy. Its making my mac literally useless.
Use Onyx (free) to do a system cleanup (cache cleanup, permissions repair, etc.).

I have an 11" MacBook Air. When I plug in my VGA adapter to my Thunderbolt port, the computer doesn't recognize it ... unless I reboot the computer. Is there another way to get the computer to recognize the adapter? (It works with my MacBook Pro)
Thanks for the useful feedback, Knucklesmac. I agree. I must have blown something on the logic board -- because I had a faulty old KVM switch that would not switch between computers without some nasty hot-plugging/unplugging the VGA video cables. (wince!). It's like when Dizzy Dean ruined his arm because a line drive hit him in the foot and he readjusted his mechanics around the injury. I take the blame because this has been a great computer, and does not deserve any blame.
If it will help anyone else reading this thread, C2G (née Cables to Go) has some interesting ideas for still getting external video out of this computer:
-USB-to-VGA
http://www.cablestogo.com/product/30545
-Convert s-video or composite video signals to high resolution VGA
http://www.cablestogo.com/product/40971
The price range is $75-$85, which doesn't make horse sense to me for such an old computer -- which has a lot of life in it anyway, because its own 15" monitor is not chopped liver.

Macbook Doesnt REcognize when i plug in my charger
please help me
i dont know what to do and my computer curently as 8 minute battery left
please provide me an answer
also i woud appreciate if you could email me the answer as well becuase i mite not be able to use yhis computer
thank you very much
DavidSo when you connect the adapter to the macbook the LED light on the adapter doesn't come up as amber or green? I would take the computer and the adapter to an apple store (or authorized apple service provider) to have the computer tested on a known good adapter. That will let you know if you need to replace the adapter or have the computer sent in for repair. If you are within the one year warranty or extended 3 year applecare plan either of these should be covered. (barring any accidental damage to the adapter or computer)

MacBook shuts down when not connected to power supply
Hey everyone, I'm making this topic for an issue that has gotten me edgy lately.
My MacBook (not new) has a habit on shutting down on me instantly for some reason when the MacBook is not plugged into charge. Here is the strange thing though, if I unplug the charger plug and set it still on my desk, I have more of a chance of the laptop not failing on me, but when I carry the MacBook around, it has a 90% (guestimate) chance of shutting down on me.
Even after having the laptop plugged in for 12 hours, the laptop just goes into suspend mode.
I have to wait a couple of seconds before I can turn it back on (by pressing the power button, not any key).
Also, when I shut down more programs at certain times when not plugged in, and having the screen brightness low, the Mac does not shut down so fast.
Any advice?!
Thanks
Message was edited by: Biz BizzleCould be you battery. Mine shuts down when showing 40% charge left and I have to plug it into the power supply to fix it. I found out it was the battery by downloading coconut battery. It's an application that allows you to check the status of your battery (Link at bottom). I suggest you get that and when your macbook shuts down again, plug it into the mains, start it up and run coconut battery. If it shows your nearly out of battery power then that's your problem.
I was showing 40% left when it shut down. Did the above and I had no power left. It happens when the battery is old about 250-400 loadcycles
Hope this helps.

Macbook Pro Freezes When USB Plugged In
Just like the title says, my Mid 2012 Macbook Pro 13 running 10.8.2 freezes for an averge of 15 seconds whenever I plug anything into the USB ports. It varies depending on what is plugged in. Phones, both iPhone and Android make it freeze for about 15 seconds, USB drives are usually just a couple seconds. I dont even know where to begin when trouble shooting this. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Hi guys,
I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro. When I plug in any usb device I get a short freeze of the pc for about 5 seconds. During my tests, I noticed that the freezing starts from the first time that i move the touchpad. It means that if I plug the usb device and I move the touchpad after 30 seconds, I get the freazing from that time for 5 seconds. if I continue to move the touchpad while I plug in the usb I don't get any freeze. Moreover, I noticed that if in the meantime that I plug in the usb I move the touchpad without any interruption, I don't get any freezing.
I don't know if the problem could be related to the touchpad or not... Help!!!

I'm trying to install a samsung series 7 750 monitor for use with my mini mac. When I plug the computer to the monitor I get a blank screen, no picture. When not plugged in to the computer the screen is black and a square displAys that says analog, HDMI 1, HDMI 2. Any ideas?
Hey there saraszeg,
It sounds like you are trying to use an external monitor with your Mac Mini but cannot get more than a gray screen. You can use the following steps to help troubleshoot the Mac side of things here:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,

MacBook Pro 17" power adapter lights orange when NOT plugged into laptop.
My MacBook Pro power adapter lights up orange even though it is not plugged into a device. When I do plug it into my laptop it remains the same and does not charge. Due to this my laptop is now dead. What does this orange light mean?
link to photo of issue: http://fenixphire.tumblr.com/image/89318049330You should take both your MBP(Macbook Pro) and your power adapter to an Apple Genius bar or an AASP(Authorized Apple Service Provider) for a free evaluation. This is a strange occurance, and it seems that it may be a hardware malfunction.

Macbook restarts after going to sleep when not plugged into mains
Hi all,
I've a mid-2012 Macbook Pro running Yosemite (10.10.3), 2.5GHz i5 and have just recently upgraded it to 16GB RAM (and I'm wondering if that's the problem).
The post title says it all really - if I let the computer go to sleep when it's not plugged into the mains, when I wake it up by pressing a key it restarts. Battery life is not a factor in this - I can have lots of juice left but the same thing will happen.
Once rebooted, I get the 'Your computer restarted because of a problem' window with the following text; I'm hoping someone smarter than me might be able to spot something in this that will help resolve the problem.
Any thoughts appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
