MacBook Tiger Install issue

Hello! I have a MacBook that was given to me and I am trying to reinstall Tiger. However when i get to the part to choose what type of install (Erase & Install, Upgrade) everything becomes grayed out. All I can do is go back. I went to disk utility to try and erase the HD or create a new partition but everything again is grayed out. I have no idea where to go from here. Appreciate your help.

Hello Again Tperk96!
"Yes I am using the original install disk from the factory."
Did you verify that with the original owner?
Do the DVDs match this description?
The grey disc 1 should say MacBook with Mac OS X Install Disc under that.
And further down:
Mac OS version 10.4.x. (The x depends on the incremental version at the time of mfg.)
AHT version 3A104 (Depending on the mfg. date and version, this may also be different)
Disc version 1

    hi everyone
i'm facing serious issues with my G4. i got that mac from ebay with install discs for 10.1, 10.2 & 10.3. Finally I got hold of a retail (black disc) version of tiger. every time i try to boot the dvd the mac keeps hanging on the gray screen wirh the apple logo.
    things i've tried:
    - use an external dvd (Asus sdrw0804P-D) -->no luck
    - remove all ram sticks except for one and tried different slots -->no luck
    - replaced the hdd -->no luck
    - checked several times the firmware version -->no luck
    - zapped the pram several times -->no luck
    - pressed the cuda switch several times -->no luck
    - copied the install disk onto the ned hdd to boot it from there (via disk utility) -->no luck
    - copied the install disko onto an external fw400 drive to boot -->no luck (probably my mac doesn't support fw boot)
unfortunately i don't have another mac to try the target mode (would that work from within windows XP?)
i've been using os 10.2 & 10.3 for quite a time now without any problems or freezes. i'm really stuck on this. i need 10.4 for some programms i want to install (e.g. itunes for my ipod 160gb)
what else could i try to get my mac to run tiger?

I have a same model G4 PowerMac AGP 400MHz, and low and behold it too does not like Tiger. I've tried installing it to it's hard drive from another machine, even updated it to 10.4.11 from another machine, but then try to boot it itself, I just get the Apple logo and the spinning thing for hours. Firmware has been updated, all of that, it just doesn't like Tiger.
I don't mind Panther, which does run on this machine okay, but I wanted Tiger, especially for it's built in VNC screen sharing functions.
    Bizarre.

  • Lion to Tiger install issues

I have a macmini I installed Lion onto, but want to take it back to Tiger.  I have gray Tiger 4.7 disks that say "MacMini" on them, but when I reboot with the disk, I get an error message saying that this system cannot be installed on this computer.  I bought several macmini's at the same time and only kept one copy of the install disks....  So, technically, these disks might not have come with this exact machine, is that my problem?  Any help out there?  How can I get it to boot and install?
I've held the option key down, and chosen the install disk.  It acts like it's going to install, and then gives the error message.

  • Can't install windondows 8.1 on my macbook pro - format issue

Can't install windondows 8.1 on my macbook pro - format issue
    Running latest version of Mavericks.
    Followed the exact bootcamp proceduce.
Have official window 8.1 version on cd.
All goes well until I have to format the 65Gb partition. Disk=0 and partition=4
Can't get over it. Altough I formatted it via a hint found on the internet with "dislpart" in NTFS. Wich also went weel and give the labelname "BOOTCAMP". But still no luck.
    I have two questions:
1/ How to start my mac again in normal mavericks mode?
2/ How can I overcome the windows installation issue?
Tried already a lot of hints found on the internet.

First, make a time machine backup. You will need to erase ands reformat your hard drive. I had the same issue. The issue is that you can't install Windows using bootcamp without having the hard drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Do this from disk utility or recovery mode (hold down command and r at startup). Then you have to restore the backup to the hard drive. Then make a usb installer drive with bootcamp and then partition and install. Here's a tip: after you install bootcamp and are in the Windows desktop, go into the installer drive and then go into the bootcamp or support folder, then find a installer that contains the Apple bootcamp drivers. Also, you will need to convert the disk to an iso file. TO MAKE THE USB DRIVE FROM A DISC, USE THIS LINK

  • 2 Older Macbook Pro's, Issues Re-Installing

    Hello everyone!
I have come across 2 different Macbook Pro's. They both have bad hard drives. So I bought 2 Western Digital hard drives and tried to install OS X Lion on them. Everything from holding down start up keys to trying to boot from a bootable USB drive has failed me. I don't have specifics on these 2 Macbooks but I do have the model numbers. One is a Silver Macbook Pro Model Number: A1211 and the other is a White Macbook Pro Model Number: A1181. From the research I've done and found online these Macbooks should install with OS X Lion. I even tried to install from the disc that came in my personal Macbook Pro and it would not install.
Do I need to install with the original versions these laptops came with or am I doing something incredibly wrong here?

What OS's are on each MacBook? None because of the new drives? Do you have the original disks? If they are too old you may need to have Snow Leopard installed first to make the jump to Lion from the App store. The disk that came with your personal MacBook Pro is likely a
machine specific version and only meant for the Mac you bought.

  • PowerBook G4 Install Issue - Still waiting for root device

Hello Everyone and thank you for reading this post.
I have a last generation PowerBook G4 which I wanted to give to a family member since I've upgraded to a newer MacBook Pro.
I started by wiping the hard drive on the PB (in Target Disk Mode) using the Disk Utility application on the MBP using a FireWire 400 <-> FireWire 800 cable.
I verified and repaired the PB HD, no issues found... but that's when things started going bad.  I'm unable to boot from the Tiger Install DVD when I restart the PB (holding down C).  I get as far as selecting the language, at which point the mouse/trackpad work for a second before freezing up.  I'm not able to select a language and that's as far as it goes.
I've also reset the ram and pram (ald+cmd+r+p) with no luck
My latest attempt has been to use the MBP's Disk Utility to partition the HD on the PB (over FireWire) and I also created a Image of the Tiger Install DVD on my MBP. I used the Disk Utility option "scan image for restore" and it checked out ok.
After successfully creating 2 partitions on the PB HD and using Disk Utility to Restore the Tiger Install DVD image to the smaller partition (10GB), I booted the PB holding the Alt key.  As expected it found the Tiger Install DVD image on the HD, I clicked the arrow to continue.
At that point the grey screen with the apple logo appears and after a while it changes to a "forbidden" sign.  Not getting much information from that I rebooted in Verbose mode (Cmd+V) to see what was going on. The attached image is what I see, unfortunately I don't know much about what it is telling me.
Lastly, I thought the RAM might have gone bad and so I removed one of the 2 ram sticks with no luck.  I haven't tried the other RAM stick on it's own yet.
I know this community is full of smart people that might have some suggestion as to what is going on.  Here is hoping someone has an idea to help me along.
    Cheers

    Hello Dalstott;
Thanks for your suggestion and apologies for my late reply.  You're right, I hadn't been paying attention to the partition scheme.
I repartitoned the hard drive (this time watching out for the partition scheme) and tried again, however I'm not out of the woods yet.
With both partitions properly formatted, I restored to the Tiger install DVD image on the smaller one and booted from it.
I booted in Cmd+V mode to see what was going on and it seemed to be doing ok, then the screen switched from the verbose output over to the language selection (beginning of the operating system install).  However it will get stuck there within a few seconds.  The mouse is initially responsive, but after 3-5 seconds the cursor (and keyboard inputs) freeze.
I've tried now a couple of times to click through as many menus as possible before the keyboard/mouse inputs freeze. Sometimes, I get as far as selecting the hardrive to install the operating system on before the clock runs out.
Any idea whould could be going on?  Could this be a RAM issue?
    Thanks for your advice.

  • Macbook Pro Wifi Issue

I incorrectly posted this in the wrong thread this morning.
I'm hopeful you might be able to help me diagnose a problem I'm having. I'll provide as much detail as possible.
I have a first generation MacBook Pro. As of this morning I was running 10.5.6 and up until this week was using a linksys router and a comcast cable modem.
I used to have a great wifi signal throughout the house (always full strength), and around 12-18 months ago noticed the signal would weaken. The best I would get would be minus the top bar on the signal, and usually only if I was directly above or next to the room with the router. There were no new phones or devices added that might adjust the signal. On the other side of the house, I would have no signal at all.
My wife has a nine year old ibook and has no issues connecting through wifi.
When I bring my laptop to her parents' house or to the Apple store, where they use Belkin on N or Airport Extreme, I get a full signal.
I've recently suffered a hard drive failure and had a replacement drive installed. The problem persists despite the software update.
Not knowing if it was a router issue or an airport card issue or a combination thereof, I went to the Genius Bar. The genius recommended I upgrade my router to Airport Extreme, and if that doesn't work to return it and he'd focus on the airport card or antenna. I could get the flat rate repair (no AppleCare at this point) for $320+ to repair the problem if Extreme didn't work.
I installed the Airport Extreme router and got a full signal in the basement, far side of the house, upstairs - everywhere. Until around 10pm. The signal died from the basement. If I walked into the room with the Airport Extreme router, I'd get a full signal. If I left the room, I'd get a partial signal. If I walked any distance (10-12 feet), the signal would die. I restarted both the modem and router with no change. I reinstalled the linksys router and got a depreciated connection. I restarted the Airport Extreme again and got a full signal throughout the night, morning, through restarts, and when I returned home from work.
Last evening after using youtube extensively it died again. Linksys would barely work if I switched back, and no matter how many times I restarted I couldn't get the signal to last outside of the area of the router. I left it in the basement overnight shut down, restarted this morning, and had a full signal.
I'm looking for any potential guesses as to what may be causing the problem. I don't want to replace the card if it's the antenna or sink too much cash into a machine if it's a heat related issue linked to Generation 1 syndrome.
During all of this the ten year old ibook works fine. I know a lot of macbook pros have issues with their wireless and don't want to sink in the cash if it's more complex than that. Any advice is much appreciated!

  • Original 10.4 Tiger install disc keeps ejecting

    Hello,
I am trying to re-install my 2007 white MacBook to its original state so I can sell it.  It currently has Lion installed, when I insert the original Apple 10.4 Tiger CD/DVD into the super drive the disc just keeps ejecting.  All other discs work and the install disc does not eject from my MacMini.
    Why is this happening?
How can I get Tiger installed on it from the original disc?
Many thanks in advance for any help provided.

When trying to boot with a disc, it's say that the disc isn't compatible with your machine.  ( I thing strongly. )
After you start up the machine normally,  can you insert the disc?
You can manually delete things.  You might miss a few things but you should get most.
    Robert
    start by deleting your id:
    Create new Account
    blue apple > system preferences
    clicks on accounts icon
click on lock icon if locked.
    enter logon password
click on + icon ( left side of screen just above the lock icon )
after creating new account, you need to logout of your current account.
blue apple > log out ... current count name ...
log on to new account. see if problem goes away.
if it has gone  away rename finder preference ( Not sure of name ) ... reboot.

  • Tiger install error on disc 2

Hello ... I am trying to install tiger on a macbook pro and get an error (bomfileerror 5) on the 2nd disc.
I do not need the xtra software it's trying to install & I would like to just re-start the install however, after I receive the error on disc #2, it tells me to insert #2 & try again which just keeps failing in the exact same way. I have tried resetting PRAM, NVRAM & SMC with no luck as the screen returns to the installer asking for disc #2. Does anyone know how I might interrupt the installer ?? Everything in the apple menu is grayed out. Any help is MOST appreciated !

*Hi mikm, Welcome* to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
So you are currently in Leopard. Do you have a FWHD for Time Machine? How big is it?
If it were me, I would get a rather large FWHD and then multi partition it. 1= large one for Time Machine. Note that TM is not a bootable clone. 2= Leopard Clone. 3= Tiger Install—now you have both worlds. 4= Tiger Clone. If you don't know about cloning, post back and help should arrive quickly.
Try a customized Leopard Install where you don't intstall the stuff on Disc 2.
When I get around to Leopard, that's what I am going to do.
    Good Luck, JP

Is this a Wireless KB you have? Many aren't recognized until after booting.
Hmmm, you've got the firmware Update needed for the AGP to install/use 10.4...
I think I'd try this, worked for me on 3 such macs...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, then choose MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Partition tab.
    6. Click Erase & look for Security Options. choose Zero 1 pass."

Oh, what are the Jumper settings on hat drive? Apple recommends Cable Select, but I find different settings work with a dizzying variety of Drive combos.

  • Can Tiger install DVD "fix" Lion Drive?

i seem to be running into an issue i don't understand and i am not sure if this is a user created problem of what is going on.
i have a mac pro with 4 disks in it. i have MOVED the home folder to my "Data" disk because i like the idea of storing data on one drive and the OS on another. i run multiple backups including two internal backups of each of the drives listed below.
right now the DATA DRIVE is showing as needing repair but i cannot seem to find a way to repair it.
i cannot boot from the install disks (they seem to be Tiger install disks) so i tried just putting them into the machine but when i click on a "read me app" it says it is a Power PC app and i can't run it.
if i PULL the bad disk and put in a new one - with the idea to clone the data back to the disk from internal clone i can't boot up. if i MOVE the CLONED Data Disk to the slot of the original Data Drive and put a new disk in the CLONED disk spot - with the idea to trick the computer into booting so i can CLONE the clone back to the CLONED disks original location (whew!) i cannot boot.
now i am thinking to actually pull the Data Drive altogether and try to restart.
OR possibly i can POINT the computer to the HOME FOLDER on the CLONE and pull the DATA DRIVE and see if i can boot this way?
anyway, anyone know why i cannot boot from the DVD's? i guess this is an issue of my current OS not being compatible in some way with the DVD OS??

    ok. will do.
any insight on this part below just for my own peace of mind? i mean, i can see something coming into play here but - well i guess if i don't have the /original/ drive (in bay 3) that the home folder resides upon in the exact same bay that it is looking for then this may come into play even though i am technically booting off a drive that still exists (the drive in bay 3)? i find this a little confusing especially if i have a clone on the same kind of drive and i put this cloned drive in the bay where the bad drive was.
"...but may prevent you from logging into the computer."
also can i please ask if you think i could set the home folder to the CLONE of the drive in bay 3 (the drive in bay 4) and boot into that to repair the drive in bay 3? or at this point just best to bring it into the mac store??

  • Re-installing 10.1 after 'Tiger' install

    Hello,
This problem involves a Mac G4 with Tiger installed at the moment[all software updates installed]
After a recent upgrade to Tiger, there exists now, a specific problem with PS-CS. Without going into too much detail, suffice it to say that the problem didn't exist with OS 10.1. This problem is seemingly irrepairable.... having been looked at by a tehnician and several other people. They have tried to resolve this issue with no luck.
It seems that this issue wasn't present with the OS 10.1[original OS with this mac].
Everything that can be done, has been done to try and resolve this issue, including deleting/removing PS-CS.
    Problem:
I have tried to re-install 10.1, using the install disk and trying to boot into the DVD install disk but to no avail. I cannot access a way of formatting the main disk or deleting the partition in disk utilities, either.
Is it that one cannot re-install or ''go back'' to a previous version or is there another way that is safe?
    TIA.
    Chris

Cornelius, I hadn't gone into that aspect of the[PhSop] problem at all in this post... I will give it a go though.
    Problem:
there are seperate photographic sheets with 'images' and 'combinations of colours'. These are a standard which are used to co-ordinate and present a perspective [primarily of colours, but also textures represented in these pictures[skin-tone, etc.] between the printer and monitor[can't think of the word when the 2 are fixed in unison].
One of these sheets has images of 4 children filling the very lowest part of the page. With this install of PS, there is a presence of ''fishskin'' in the ''lighter coloured'' areas of some of the kids faces'...slightly shiney and opaque, almost like the printer forgot to colour in this area, but in a slightly fish-skin-like-way. It is a bit like over flash, but not as strong.
This/these sheet/s are templates for 'co-ordinating' the printer and monitor.
The technician I referred to has used as many means as he can to set this right but with no luck so far. The monitor has been ''spidered'' correctly [a device that looks like a spider and sits on top of the monitor face and in conjunction with the coloured sheets produce/provide for a [hopeful] match]. All drivers and utilities[within printer software] have been deployed to try and resolve this issue and all done correctly.
    You said:
Are you saying that you that when you boot from your Tiger install disk holding down the "C" key and go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility, that all other options are greyed out?
sorry if it's confused but it's not the Tiger, but the previous, original G4 OS X install copy I am having a problem with. [I will check out which version tomorrow and post it].
I can't start the install process ''at all'', no matter what way I try it...not able to use the erase in D.U in the present Tiger install, 'target disk'[dvd] or using 'C' at boot up.
Should one be able to go back to using a previous install disk/s, to a previous version in the first place? I mean there wouldn't be much point in installing an older version if one has the latest one.
But perhaps, by doing so, this may resolve the issue of ole fishy-skin. This problem wasn't present with the older original [previous] version of OS X.
