Macbook to Asus monitor resolution problem

I have a ’08 Macbook connected to an Asus monitor via DVI. I’ve been working at 1280 x 800 with a “usable” resolution of 1280 x 720 (listed in Mac Color LCD dialogue box). In the Asus VH238 dialogue box, many higher resolutions are available (max 1920 x 1080) but don’t work. At least I didn’t think they did, until I “accidentally” opened the Macbook lid and/or turned on the power on the monitor or some combination of moves that somehow allowed 1920 x 1080 resolution to work. Unfortunately, it only happened once and I can’t seem to duplicate what I think I did. Any suggestions?

Hi gasser29,
I'm unclear if you are still running 10.6 as is noted in your post, but for most versions of OS X, if you hold down the Option key when selecting the Scaled radio button in Displays, it should give you additional display resolution options:
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your display’s resolution
If you select a resolution that isn't supported and your display becomes black or unreadable, you may also find this article helpful:
OS X Yosemite: If you changed your display’s resolution and now there’s no picture

  • External monitor resolution problem

    Hi,
My external monitor's resolution is 1920 x 1080 but the highest I see in resolutions' list is 1600 X 900 or 1344 x 1008.  I am connecting my MacBook snow leopard to Asus ML249H with HDMI cable.  I've tried some suggestions that were posted for Mac Pro but nothing worked.  Can anyone help?  Thanks!

I have this same problem but im running Lion OSX 10.7

  • Yosemite 10.3.3 2nd monitor resolution problem

I just updated to the new Yosemite 10.3.3 on my Mac Pro 2011 and my second monitor will not let me choose my correct display resolution. It only lets me choose 1080i, 1080p, 720p. It worked fine at 1920x1080 before the update and filled the screen correctly but now i have the TV top and bottom black bars on the monitor and is driving me nuts. The monitor i am using is a production monitor JVC DT-V20L3DY.  I have tried the restart and the button inside and same thing. Any ideas how to fix this?

I have the same issues with the 10.10.3 release, running on an older (2009) MacBook Pro.  Graphics system for mine is the NVIDA GeForce 9400M chipset.  Touchstone is spot on, the 10.10.3 build does not seem to have a selection in the scaled display settings for 1920x1080.
However, on a much older iMac, (2007?) I have, this is not the case.  I'm running Dell S2490W Monitors as secondary on both systems, and the iMac build has retained the correct scaled resolution of 1920x1080 as an option.  This option does not appear on the MacBook pro load.  Obviously, this worked properly until the update (in 10.10.2) on my MacBook Pro
I suspect we have a driver issue with out MacBook Pro graphics chiptset and the 10.10.3 release.  I would love to hear from the community if this is a common problem.  I would hate to hear a "We don't support that hardware anymore"!

  • External monitor resolution problems with Mountain Lion

I have a problem with my external monitor (Samsung LS19B150NS) and Mountain Lion (running on unibody Mac Mini). Each time I reboot OSX the resolution get reset from native 1366 x 768 to something lower. The display is connected via DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter. Some observations:
    - I tried selecting "Best for..." option or "Scaled" (set on 1366 x 768 or 1360 x 768). The problem is still there
    - Sometimes resoltuion might stay alright for several reboots, but then the problem re-appears again
    - Sleep mode doesn't reset resolution
    - Other monitors work fine via the same adapter
    - The Samsung LS19B150NS work perfectly well with other Win PCs
Any suggestions how to fix it?

  • Acer AL2032w as an external monitor: Resolution problem

    Hi,
naive as I am I bought the AL2032w widescreen LCD for my new PB and didn't expect any problems since the monitor has exactly the same max. resolution (1680x1050) as the PB LCD itself and as the Apple 20" Cinema Display... well...
Now the monitor settings of OSX identify the display as "Acer MFM DVI" and only offer me strange resolutions like 1600x1200, 1360x768, 1344x1008, etc.
What can I do to get the full 1680x1050?
    Thanks,
    Y.
PS: "Buy a cinema display!" is not an answer...

I am not positive of this but it sounds like you may
have to make a trip to the Monitor Manufactures Web
site and see if they Offer an update to the Firmware
Drivers for this Monitor for your Mac and Operating
    System.
It might also be that the settings that you have
found that are available to your Mac might be all you
have, and the Higher resolution and drivers and
    firmware are for a PC.
    Cheers Don
Well the problem is that the Firmware should be up to date (monitors are brandnew), and drivers are an issue of the graphic card provider, and here ATI refuses any help since it would be Apple's business to do this...
So, I'm still open for suggestions, especially how to tinker with the monitor settings in Tiger, I'd expect the monitor to work if I could make the Mac believe it is an Apple Cinema Display...
    All the best

  • 39L22U as PC Monitor: Resolution Problem

I recently purchased the 39L22U model. I was using HDMI from my laptop and getting full 1920x1080 resolution. I added another HDMI device to my system and moved my laptop to the VGA(PC) port, but now the max resolution I can set is oddly 1360x768. Either it is the "Generic PnP Monitor" driver not detecting the TV's true capability or the TV not accepting input from VGA over 1360X768.
    Specs:
    HDMI 1: XBOX 360
    HDMI 2: PS3
VGA/PC: Asus Laptop, Nvidia 210M, Windows 7 Ultimate
I know for certain both the TV and Laptop support full 1080P as I Got 1080P over HDMI, but can't over VGA.

Yes, VGA cables are capable of 1080p and higher and the typical limiting factor is the graphics card of your computer. There are two drawbacks to VGA. First, it may be a tiny bit blurry since the signal has to be converted to analog and then back to digital (also the chance of interference). Secondly, it has no HDCP capabilities so you can't play HDCP content over a VGA cable.
Personally I always go with the digital cables over the analog cables."
What? You know anything about VGA? VGA Can output up to 2048×1536px.  1360 x 768 is not acceptable. Toshiba needs to fix this. I have this same issue too:

  • G4 PowerMac OS 9.1  Monitor resolution problems

My old apple monitor has just died and I've replaced it with a 17" LCD capable of running up to 1280 x 1024 resolution. Problem is that my G4 Mac only has 1024 x 768 and lower in the Monitor control panel - iMac (v8.6.1). How can I add more resolutions to the list? Also there are only 9 profiles under the colour tab - is this relevant? The new monitor didn't come with any software either. Please help.

    Hi
You could try zapping the PRAM (pronounced Pee-RAM) on start-up, depress commandalt+PR wait until you hear the start up chime, keep them depressed until you hear the chime again, do it one more time and then let go, as well as flushing any default PRAM settings its also useful for curing a variety of stored up ills. Doing this may reset the graphics card so as it can display and support more resolutions for the type of monitor you have. Upgrading to 9.2.2 won’t hurt either, in fact 9.2.2 would be a better OS for you anyway. It handles RAM better and is generally more reliable. The profiles don’t have any bearing on supported resolutions. Failing that you are probably looking at purchasinbg another graphics card. What model mac is it anyway?

  • New Monitor resolutions problem...

Hello. I got a Mac G4/466 with a 17" monitor that is going to die... I'm looking for a new monitor TFT. I know Acer, Benq, LG and other 22" Wide monitor supports Macintosh but only in some resolutions like 1152x900 at 75Hz.
I want to know if there's any problems with this resolutions, and why I can't see the hight resolution: 1680x1050. Also if my ATI Rage 128 Pro with 16 Mb VRAM suppotrs all this monitors.
Any info will be very acknowledge. Thanks!

    Hi valldeina,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
The "60Hz" means that the picture refreshes 60 times a second. This is only acceptable on small monitors, on larger monitors you should use at least 85Hz, better 100Hz (this is only valid for CRT-monitors, it does NOT apply to LCDs).
Both frequency (60Hz) and resolution (e.g. 1024x768) are limited by the video-RAM of your graphic card and, in the case of CRT-monitors, by a hardware restriction by Apple for non-Apple monitors. However, if your graphic card can display higher resolutions and/or frequencies you can by an adapter to activate these (there is just one contact on the VGA plug missing, so if you manage to find out which one that is you can even do it yourself).

  • Dual Monitor Resolution Problems

I have the ATI 2400HD card in my iMac and I checked here on the Apple site and it says it supports resolution upto 1920x1200. Now when I connected a new LCD monitor with that resolution the max available is 1680x1050. Do I have to update the driver for the video card and add that resolution?

Are you using the DVI mini to DVI or VGA adaptor? What kind of LCD is it? brand/model/size=?
You are correct it should be able to go up to 1920x1200 according to the tech specs:
+"Mini-DVI video out with support for DVI, VGA, S-video, and composite video output (requires adapter, sold separately) Support for external display with digital resolution up to 1920 x 1200, analog resolution up to 2048 x 1536"+

  • IMac monitor resolution problem

I've been using an external monitor (acer) with my iMac 24" 2.16 ghz core 2 duo, mostly with Logic and various instrument plugins. It's been working great for a few months. Then today all of a sudden the display changed resolution (I think in response to some Logic zoom commands that I think are similar to some finder commands? not sure) Anyway, when I reset the system preferences back to what I think it's usually set at, the largest, which is 1920x1200, it looks a little fuzzy, and the full desktop is not shown on the monitor, I have t scroll to get to the edges. I disconnected the acer external, but it didn't change anything.
Anyone know what could have gone wrong and how to fix? Thanks!

It was Universal Access zoom. Where is everybody?

  • External monitor resolution problems

According to System Preferences, I currently have a maximum resolution of 1280x800 on my built-in monitor.   When I hook up a my large external monitor with higher resolution capabilities, I don't seem to be able to use the whole screen size and I'm losing about 4" of space that I desperately need!

Each has its limitations. Mirroring limits the external to the internal's max resolution. Extended desktop doesn't allow you to mirror. You're going to have to decide which you like better.
I'm still not clear what you're seeing in extended desktop. You should be able to get a whole desktop's worth of display on the external display, not just half of it. Open display prefs > arrangement again and drag the menu bar from the little/built in display over to the big one/external display.

  • IMac 27" & External monitor ( Benq 241 ) resolution problems

Hi, im using a 27" imac... recently just bought a mini displayport to HDMI cable to hook it up to my 24" Benq 241 monitor.
Im pretty sure ive used this monitor before without a problem on my old macbook.
    The monitors max resolution is : 1920 x 1200
but im only getting the option of :
    1080i
    1080p
    720p
    480i
    480p
    1600 x 900
    1344 x 1008
.... the rest go down in numbers
selecting 1080p gives a fuzzy picture... and 1080i, is what looks liek the highest - but still really pixellated
    any ideas?

You can get one like this
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/Moshi_Mini_DisplayPort_to_HDMI_Adapt er?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng
But you can also get an inexpensive one from Monoprice

    They usually work well
