Can you open a terminal and invoke the following commands:
ping -c 10 localhost
and
ping -c 10 google.com
You should normally get something like:

Macbook suddenly cannot connect to WiFi
Hi guys,
All of a sudden, overnight, my Macbook Pro cannot connect to our home wifi network. I have tried every trick in the book, rebooting, changing "locations," changing the password of the router, moving around the priority of the difference connections, but whatever I do I get the same error message when I try logging in:connection timed out.
Until now it has functioned perfectly since we moved in here a month ago, and I have no explanation for what happened. At one point it looked like the problem was related to the ip-address as it could connect to the wifi but not get an ip-address, but now I cannot even replicate that!
Another issue I am considering is whether it could be disturbance from another wifi network (there is like 15 of them active in our building) Could that explain it?
Thanks!try removing the security from your router, and connecting to the unsecured network.
If that fails, try to connect to another location, and see if you can connect to someone elses network.
Next connect the computer directly to the modem and see if that works. -
Hello, my sister her macbook pro cannot connect to our wireless internet. My imac however can, so the problem has to do with her laptop. We were wondering how we could solve this problem? Thank you very much in advance!
We did that, but it just doesn't seem to be able to connect. So basically we tried to connect to our network and insert the password, but afterwards it does nothing. Weird thing is also that the network symbol (top right of the screen) says that it has been connected, but when I go look at the system preferences --> network, it states that it has not been connected

XP Pro on MacBook Pro Cannot Connect to AirPort Network
I just installed Windows XP using the Boot Camp set up utility. After I installed Windows, I went to set up a wireless network and went through the full process of setting it up. Since I've done that several times, XP Pro on my MacBook will not connect to my AirPort network. I have an airport network on one end of the house and on the other end, I have an airport express to increase the signal.
Any ideas?I feel your pain! I can tell you how to get into a protected net ... just not how to STAY connected for any appreciable time! Haven't figured that one out!
Go to your wireless connection icon ... bottom rhs of tool bar (XP)
- 2x click that icon ... that'll bring up your connection
- Highlight your connection
- Select the "Change Advanced settings"... lower lhs of screen
- When the next window pops-up, select the "Wireless Networks " tab
- The next window should display your connection ... if not highlight it
- Select properties
- In this window you should select:
- Shared for Network Auth
- Select WEP for Data Encrypt
- Input your Network Key (You can get this off your Airport Admin Utility by bringing up the Airport and selecting the "Lock" icon that's named "Password". Select password and it'll give you the hexadecimal equivalent. Input that into your Network Key window and authenticate.
- Select OK and you should be good for about 5 mins! -

My Macbook Pro cannot connect to the internet using an ethernet cord. It was working fine for weeks, then all of a sudden just stopped. What could the problem be?

MacBook Pro cannot connect to a wireless network
I am having the following problem with my MacBook Pro trying to connect to a wireless network using a 2WIRE Gateway wireless Router from Bell that worked perfectly until last night. My network preferences pane is saying "AirPort has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.227.XX and will not be able to connect to the Internet." I'm not a techie and I've tried everything I know and cant get my MacBook to connect to the internet using the wireless network in my home. I'm using ethernet connected directly to my router for this! It's killing me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.OK. The wireless network was selected. In the Preferences / Network pane I removed Airport by selecting it and hitting the - button and then created a new Airport by hitting + and selecting Airport. I'm getting the same result. Full network signal once the ethernet cable is connected. Greyed out icon with ! once I remove the ethernet cable and no internet. I appreciate your help so far. Any other thoughts? We also have an iPad, iPhobe, iPod, and two iMacs on the same network. All of them are connected no problem. My Macbook also still connects to the network in my workplace no problem. This all just started happenening yesterday and I don't believe I changed or upgraded anything. I just came home and it had stopped working.

Macbook Pro cannot connect to the internet even when others can
Hi! Please help me. We have an internet WIFI connection in our office but only my MacBook Pro cannot connect even when I entered the correct password. My Iphone and Ipad work just fine. It says "connection timeout" but all other laptops can connect. I tried network diagnostics already and it always say "connection timeout". I dont know what to do anymore.
Yes, and when I open the Network Utility it shows a working IP address, and a 54Mb/s speed from the wireless router. It even shows the shared computers from my roomates. But when I try to access the internet it does not load anything on Safari or Firefox ( or any other internet application for that matter). It is completely unconnected. YET, As soon as I activate the AirPort card on the top right where I have my signal strength, it shows on the Network Utility information that there are 'packages' being sent and received, and I have NO programs open what so ever, I have closed everything except finder and network utility... Does this mean I am being hacked, or have some sort of Trojan or something in my computer? I ran an antivirus that my school provided, called Virex by McAfee, it came out clean except it says it cannot read one file.
I tried repairing my disk, and that did not work either. I did the Ram reset like you suggested, but that also did not work. I doubt it being a hardware error. I am going to try to connect it to an ethernet cable to see if that will work. Then I will let you know what happens with that, but that would still not be a solution since I need it wireless, cause the router is in another part of the house.
Thank you for your help, and I hope we can get this sorted out. -
MacBook to TV connection -- HELP!
I have a MacBook 6.1, which I have connected to my Sony TV using the mini-display-port with an HDMI. This set-up has worked for a couple years now, but it stopped working when I got back from vacation this week. The TV registers no connection whatsoever. The MacBook sees the connection sometimes, and I can see that all of the display settings are correct. (Sometimes the MacBook screen flashes blue, like it would when the connection is first established, but it does so continuously until unplugged.)
I believe the last time I had problems with this connection, it ended up being an update to OS X that had caused it. Any ideas on how to fix it this time?Have to tried another hdmi cable or display port adaptor? Cables sometimes quit...
Also try a differen hdmi port on your tv. Just to rule out hardware problems. -
Macbook Pro WIFI connection slow and intermittent
I recently moved to a new apartment and had Time Warner install our internet/Wifi. My Macbook Pro will connect to the Wifi and work fine for about 30-60 seconds and then become extremely slow, even to the point of no connection most times. I have tried using both the new router and the old router that worked just fine at our old apartment but both behave the same way. I have reset the routers multiple times but that does not fix the situation and I do not believe the router is the problem since my two roommates (one of which uses a Macbook Pro) have no connection problem. My iPhone connects perfectly fine as well. When I am on other Wifi addresses, my Macbook works just fine. Also, my Macbook is only one month old. I called Apple to try and solve the problem and they believe it is an interference problem however the connection remains the same no matter how close or far from the router I am and all other devices don't seem to have interference problems. Any help is very much appreciated!
EricMight be corrupted network preferences ..
Type or copy paste the following:
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Click Go then move all the files in the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.
See if that makes a difference.
Your Mac will generate a new SystemConfiguration folder for you.
If that doesn't help, try Wi-Fi diagnostics here > Wi-Fi: How to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connectivity -
My MacBook won't connect to the Internet, but it's connected to my router. When I go to network preferences, it says that it has a self assigned ip address, and can't connect to the Internet. How can I fix this? Please help!
First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly. -
Macbook will not connect to the internet
I was online then dropped off. I tried to reconnect and nothing. I have an iPhone which is picking up my internet activity and I have a Windows work computer picking up internet activity. Just the Macbook wont work. It seems dead to the internet.
So I'm having the same problem. I woke up one morning and my macbook's ethernet connection suddenly stopped working. For some reason It wont recognize the cable.... I have tried 3 different cables and theses cables work with my sisters PC so I know the cable is not the issue. Im also living in college dorms which seems to be a commonality with this issue. I've searched for answers all over and I really don't have the time to make it to the mac store anytime soon. My wireless works but it's not allowed in my college dorms for security reasons(lame). Please help!...

MacBook will not connect to the internet via ethernet cable anymore.
My MacBook apparently decided the other day that it no longer desired to connect to the internet through an ethernet connection; it still works perfectly through a wireless network. I am a university student and so there is wireless almost everywhere so it's not so bad, but I cannot connect in my dorm and it's becoming a bit of a pain. I have tried to connect through several known working ethernet ports and no matter what my computer thinks it's not even plugged in. It's even more strange because I just woke up one morning and it was no longer working. Everything else it totally normal, save this one little inconvenience. Any ideas?
