Macbook to LCD TV

Which cable can I use for s video, or can I, to my LCD TV? If not, what are my other options. I don't have HDMI.

If you are using an Aluminum MacBook there is NO way to directly connect via S-Video to a TV through a Mini DisplayPort (i.e. no simple cable adapter).
However, you CAN connect using a setup similar to what is discussed in the following post:

If you want to connect to an HDTV (DVI or HDMI) see this post:

  • Mini-DVI to VGA - online video freezes when dragged from MacBook to LCD TV

I connected my MacBook to my LCD TV this morning via Mini-DVI to VGA, and am trying to stream online video. The video works fine when the browser is on my MacBook screen, but when I drag it over to the LCD TV, the video freezes. I tried setting the screens to mirrored as well, and the video wouldn't play (on either). I'm not really sure what else to try. Any help would be appreciated!

    Try this...
With the TV connected, go into Displays Preferences and click on the Arrangement tab. You should see two blue rectangles meant to represent the two screens. One of the rectangles will have a white bar across the top, meant to represent the menu bar. Drag the small white bar from one blue rectangle to the other. This will move the real menu bar to the TV, making it the primary display. Now see if your video will play on the TV.

  • What do i need to connect Macbook to LCD tv?

Can someone tell me what is the best way to connect my Macbook to my LG LCD TV?
I want to watch DVDs on my tv and hear the sound through the tv.
I have the following connections available on my tv:
    VGA
    DVI
    s-video
    composite (red, yellow & white)
    Regards Simon

Hi, refering to your spec, these two might work, and it is up to you which one you want to use, for I prefer the the VGA one, since the DVI have at least 3 kind (DVI-I, DVI-D, and DVI-A) if I am not mistaken.

Read the user comment on the DVI adapter section, looks like it is easier to use the VGA one instead of the DVI one if you don't know which DVI your LG TV provided for the DVI.
And as for the sound the first post is give you clear information on that.
    Good Luck.

  • Connecting Macbook to LCD TV

I want to connect my Macbook to my LCD TV. I have seen videos on Youtube showing ways of doing this, but I chose to connect them slightly different from the videos I saw.
I have connected a Mini DVI - VGA adapter to my Macbook, then connected a VGA - HDMI cable from the adapter to the LCD TV.
I have then put the TV setting on 'HDMI PC'. I have also gone into 'System Preferences' on my Macbook clicked on 'Displays' and 'Detect Displays' but nothing happens.
Could anyone tell me where I am going wrong?

    May, be hard to do.
Apple's new MacBook lines includes a form of digital copy protection that will prevent protected media, such as DRM-infused iTunes movies, from playing back on devices that aren't compliant with the new priority protection measures.
The Intel-developed technology is called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and aims to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across a variety of display connectors, even if such copying is not in violation of fair use laws.
Among the connectors supported by the technology are the Mini DisplayPort found on Apple's latest MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, in addition to others such as Digital Visual Interface (DVI), High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), Gigabit Video Interface (GVIF), and Unified Display Interface (UDI).
Apple has apparently acquired a license for the technology and is now using it across its DisplayPort-enabled MacBook lines to to prevent transmission of purchased iTunes content to devices that don't include support for HDCP.

  • Connect MacBook to LCD TV HDMI Input

Is it possible to connect a MacBook to my Sony Bravia LCD HDMI Input? Will the image be better than connecting it via VGA?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
HDMI will be better than VGA because VGA is analog and HDMI is digital. If you have an aluminum MacBook, it has a mini-DisplayPort plug. You can buy an Apple (or third party) mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter and then find an HDMI to DVI cable. There are now a couple of third party vendors making mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapters but I'm not sure if they're available in Singapore.
Keep in mind that the mini-DisplayPort does not carry any audio even though HDMI could. So, you'll probably also want to get an audio cable to connect your headphone port to the audio inputs of the TV or stereo.

  • MacBook hdmi lcd display - help needed!

Hi all, I'm connecting my MacBook to my 32" Vizio lcd via hdmi (using a mini-dvi to dvi adaptor & dvi to hdmi cable). When I mirror displays, one of two things happen: (1) either the Vizio display is too small and has black bars around it, or (2) the Vizio display is too large and I cannot see the menu bar or the dock.
The fist time I connected to the tv, I managed to get the full screen display perfectly but have not been able to repeat this since. I've tried everything I can think of - different combinations of resolutions, with and without overscan, etc.
    Any advice much appreciated!

    Try this:
Hook the MB up to the Vizio.
Hook the MB up to it's Magsafe power adapter and plug the adapter in.
Close the lid on the MB so it goes to sleep.
Now, plug something into a USB port on the MB.
The recommended thing to plug in would be a USB keyboard and mouse. But you could use just one of those, meaning either a keyboard or a mouse. If you don't have a USB keyboard or mouse, you can just plug in one of those USB flash memory devices.
The USB activity will cause the MB to wake up with its lid down and only the external (Vizio) screen will be active. Once that happens, you can lift the lid on the MB and use its keyboard and trackpad and the built-in screen will stay off.

  • Any issues connecting the new MacBook to LCD projector with VGA adapter?

I do presentations on the road using my old MacBook with whatever LCD I find when I get there. I run Keynote with lots of video clips in my presentations. I carry a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter. Most often it works fine.
I was hoping to update to the new MacBook, but I'm concerned about the display issues on the discussion board.
Has anyone had any experience connecting the new MacBook using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter?

I received my MB (aluminium) 2.0 in early November, but only this week (2nd week December) have had a need to use it for a presentation via the Mini DisplayPort --> VGA adapter.
I thought I could use it just as I did my previous (white 1.83 MacBook) laptop, but this one is a bit quirkier. Plugging in the adapter cable results in a system freeze. Unplugging the cable will restore mouse control (unfreezing the computer) in most instances, but not all.
Turns out that in order to use an external VGA connection, I need to have the adapter plugged in and restart the machine. If the external display is not present from boot, then it freezes.
This is unlike my previous MacBook, in which I could plug-unplug willy-nilly. The screen would flash blue a couple of times and all would be fine, with the external extended display detected and functioning. This was one of those nice "Mac" things that my Windows-using colleagues were somewhat jealous of, as they constantly have trouble getting their laptops to recognize the LCD projector.
Sadly, it looks like I'm now living in their world...

  • MacBook Pro LCD Issue

I have an aluminum MacBook Pro 15" with Intel core 2 duo and GeForce 8600M GT.
Starting from this evening, the LCD screen shown for the whole size, many vertical green lines 1 pixel widht. The external monitor connected to the DVI work well, so it seems an LCD issue. Any one experienced same issue and/or can suggest me a solution?
    Thanks in advance
    Claudio

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Since the external works well, it does sound like a display issue, and could be a hardware fault in the display itself. If so, the solution would probably be to replace the display.
If you have access to an Apple Store, it would be worth making an appointment at the genius bar to have a trained professional look at it in person and give you an opinion.
For future reference, you do have the graphics chip which is covered by this program:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Since the external has good video, you probably don't have that problem now, but keep it in mind if you start having problems on the external as well.
    Good luck!

  • Are there widespread issues with macbook pro lcds having to be replaced on computers less than a year and a half old

are there any know issues with respect to lcd displays going bad on macbook pros. my computer which sits on a desk and has never traveled outside the home needs a whole new lcd replacement. Its a year and three months old.Pretty bad for an expensive laptop

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Some MacBooks Pro with Retina display have got problems with the display, related to a display manufacturer. However, in this case, it's a common issue and Apple is replacing or repairing all of these computers for free.
In your case, probably it was bad luck. Computers fail, and maybe you have bad luck and your computer has got a defective part that has to be replaced. Fortunately, this rarely happens, and most of the users are happy with their MacBooks Pro

  • Macbook Pro LCD Screen Works Sometimes / On/Off

For several months my (late 2007, 15 in) macbook pro screen was not working at all. I took it to apple at one point and they said I would need to replace my screen which would cost at least $400 or $600 I can't remember how much. I just knew it was too much.
Then recently I found out that my model had the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor and Apple found out those had a problem in a number of those computers so they are supporting it by replacing the mother board.
So... I got my new mother board recently but the screen was STILL not coming on at all after the repair. One conclusion was obvious I needed a new screen or just use the computer as a desktop with an external monitor which is what I've been doing.
    So now, here's the rub:
My SCREEN MAGICALLY HAS COME BACK ON just last night and this morning... it was working and then Poof it went off again.... now again it's magically come back on.
When working there isn't any streaks or anything that appears damaged on the screen at all. My guess is that there is some cable or some connector point that is loose and somehow like a short makes it go on and off.
Now, part of what has been going on since yesterday is that I just replaced my hard drive so I've had the cover of the computer off... somehow I did something to they keyboard so I'm having to use an USB keyboard right now (might have to replace that too). So... somehow my taking off the cover and putting it back on a few times must have touched something that is making it work again.
What could it be? Any ideas? I'd be grateful for any advice that would keep me from having to try buying a new screen as I understand I have to replace the whole piece.
    Thanks,
    phil

That's a very interesting offer. There are a finite number of LCD manufacturers, and it could be there are models that can go in different computers. The construction of the display and the cables would be different for different computers. It would depend on whether the LCD is specifically configured for Apple or if Apple uses an "off the shelf" LCD and then configures the housing and cables.
Generally, in manufacturing, you try to use as many off the shelf parts as you possibly can. For example, you would use standard screws and fasteners unless you had a special need for a non-standard one. If there is already a LCD on the market that meets your specs and your needs, then it would make sense to use it rather than to have something special made.
I still suspect that the problem will turn out to be a connection one rather than one with the LCD itself. There have been cases where the flex cable developed damage from opening and closing the computer. This would be the first thing to check. A break in the trace or traces in a flex cable would allow for intermittent working of the LCD, depending on whether the broken traces were touching or not.
If the price sounds reasonable, then it sounds like you don't have much to lose by letting the guy have a shot at it. I wonder if he would let you watch while he works--it might be very illuminating.
    Good luck!

  • My third Macbook Retina LCD replacements in less than a month

I guess the tittle says it all. A month ago I noticed there was a small white dot on the right bottom corner so I brought it to store to have my LCD screen replaced. When I came home I notice my LCD screen is yellow when I compared to my MacBook Pro 17. Needless to say I went to the store to have my LCD screen replaced because of the yellow tint. So now it is officially my third LCD screen replacements and I'm still seeing the yellow hue (tint) on my screen. Is it a new Apple standard? Because Apple Genius told me they like the screen on the left side better (yellow hue) than the right side (day light color). Please advise me what to do at this point. I have one month left before my AppleCare warranty is expired. Apple Genius told me that this is the last time they would replace my screen and they knew it is going to yellow tint again. So far I spoke to Apple Senior Advisor (over the phone) and Apple Genius (in store) and they said there is nothing wrong with the screen and there is no way they will replace my MacBook.
What would you do if you were in my situation? Thank you for your advice!
At this moment my MacBook LCD screen manufacturer is Samsung (LSN154YL01001)
rMBP is on the left and MBP 17 is on the right.

Same problem. Bought the Retina MacBook Pro in 2012. Got a nice bluish screen but with stuck white pixels in the lower-right corner. Got the screen replaced and the replacement screen is greenish-yellow like yours. The model number is LSN154YL01001.
This is not the first screen I got from Apple that's green. My iPhone 4S had a green screen. I replaced it and got another green screen. My iPad 4 had a green screen and I returned it. Now I'm stuck because I can't just return this Retina MacBook Pro that I bought last year. If I bring it in to the Genius Bar and tell them the screen is green they will either say it looks normal or it's not defective. Calibrating the screen via System Preferences > Color doesn't help. Usually looks worse.
So are these screens defective or by design? I really don't know. I've seen blue iPhone 4S and I've seen green iPhone 4S. I've seen blue iPad 3s and I've seen redish iPad 3s. We've both had blue Retina MacBook Pros and now we have green Retina MacBook Pros.
If it had come initially with the greenish-yellow screen I would have returned it but now I'm stuck with a screen that looks like it has green slime all over it.

  • How do I connect MacBook to LCD TV?

    Hello there,
I have a MacBook and would like to hook it up to my widescreen TV so I can see photos on it through FrontRow and maybe watch movies too.
I have the following connections on my TV
    red/white/yellow
    s-video
    x2 scarts
    pc input
    pc audio input
But I'm afraid I have no idea how to do it!
Can anyone help and point me in the right direction of the correct lead at the Apple Store?
    Thanks!

you need a mini dvi to s-video adaptor.
this one, from apple, has s-video and composite (red white yellow)
s video provides a much better signal than composite, so try to hook it up htat way, if the s vid is open on your tv.
you will also need to buy a standard s vid cable. (rad shack sells them)
remember, s vid only handles the video, you will need a 3.5mm to stereo rca (red and white) cable for the audio.
again, rad shack should have this.
